Hannah Barnes is Investigations Producer at the BBC's flagship television news and current affairs program, Newsnight. She has spent the last 15 years at the BBC, specializing in investigative and analytical journalism for both television and radio. Hannah led Newsnight's coverage of the care available to young people experiencing gender-related distress at the UK's National Health Service's (NHS) only youth gender clinic in England and Wales, the Gender Identity Development Services (GIDS) at the Tavistock in London.In this episode, Sasha and Stella speak with Hannah about how, although she continued to report and expose questions, nothing changed and she eventually felt compelled to write a book; as she says herself “I knew too much.” In this probing discussion, issues such as puberty blockers, overwhelming caseloads, and the impact of lobby groups, such as Mermaids, are highlighted and explored.Hannah's work at Newsnight ultimately helped precipitate an extensive review by the NHS and unearthed evidence that was later used in several sets of legal proceedings. On this episode of Gender: A Wider Lens, Stella & Sasha sit down with Dr. Michael Biggs, Associate Professor of Sociology at the University of Oxford and a Fellow of St Cross College. Dr. Biggs has been key in uncovering vital information that led to the independent Cass Review on GIDS at Tavistock. Biggs has since turned his laser-like focus on the Dutch Protocol and in this episode, he discusses many of the issues with this flawed model. His distinguished body of work includes articles on social movements and collective protest published in all the leading disciplinary journals, including the American Journal of Sociology, American Sociological Review, British Journal of Sociology, and Social Forces. In this conversation, Dr. Biggs tells the story of his experience as a professor in a graduate sociology program when he encountered pushback from students about discussing gender identity from a sociological perspective as part of a classroom exercise. Dr. Biggs has a longstanding history of advocating on behalf of LGBT issues and found himself puzzled when students questioned his intentions. He decided to dig into the literature to try to understand where and how the topic of gender generated such surprising responses from a few of his students. After diving deep into pediatric gender medicine, he continued pursuing investigations into the unreported outcomes for patients at the largest pediatric gender clinic in the world, the Tavistock's Gender Identity Development Services (GIDS). After a lack of response when he requested information from the GIDS directly, Dr. Biggs filed a Freedom of Information request to access data about research and treatment protocols being conducted at the clinic. Ultimately, the buried outcomes of using puberty blockers in children and adolescents were far less than positive. Biggs began to wonder: how was the puberty blocker pathway worthy of its reputation as the “gold standard” for pediatric transgender care? Where was the research to back up that claim? What motivated Michael to dedicate so much effort to learning and reporting on medical experimentation in gender-affirming care? Dr. Biggs describes feeling compelled to a sense of duty and responsibility to use his privilege to fight for academic truth. Verlossing probeert geen middel aan te wenden dat vooralsnog aan je denken te vreemd is om behulpzaam te zijn, noch het soort veranderingen aan te brengen dat jij niet zou kunnen herkennen. Concepten zijn nodig zolang de waarneming duurt, en het veranderen van concepten is de taak van de verlossing. Want zij speelt nu eenmaal te midden van contrasten, en niet van de waarheid, die geen tegendeel kent, en niet veranderen kan. Binnen de concepten van deze wereld zijn de schuldigen ‘slecht', en de ‘goeden' onschuldig. En er is niemand hier die niet een concept van zichzelf bezit waarin hij het ‘goede' telt opdat hem het ‘kwade' wordt kwijtgescholden. En evenmin vertrouwt hij het ‘goede' in iemand, omdat hij gelooft dat het ‘kwade' daarachter op de loer moet liggen. Dit concept legt de nadruk op verraad, en vertrouwen wordt zo onmogelijk. En het kan niet veranderen zolang jij het ‘kwade' in jouzelf ziet.2. Jij kunt je ‘slechte' gedachten niet herkennen zolang jij in een aanval waarde ziet. Je zult ze af en toe waarnemen, maar ze niet zien als betekenisloos. En dus komen ze in een angstwekkende vorm, hun inhoud nog steeds verborgen, om jouw armzalig zelfconcept aan het wankelen te brengen en zwart te maken met weer een nieuwe ‘misdaad'. Jij kunt jezelf niet je onschuld schenken, want jij bent te zeer verward over jezelf. Maar mocht één enkele broeder in jouw visie dagen als volledig het vergeven waard, dan is jouw concept van jezelf geheel veranderd. Dan zijn jouw ‘kwade' gedachten vergeven samen met die van hem, omdat jij geen van alle invloed op jou liet hebben. Je kiest er niet langer voor dat jij het teken van kwaad en schuld in hem moet zijn. En wanneer jij je vertrouwen schenkt aan het goede in hem, schenk je dat aan het goede in jou.3. Zo zie je hem qua concept als meer dan louter een lichaam, want het goede is nooit wat het lichaam lijkt te zijn. De handelingen van het lichaam worden beschouwd als afkomstig van jouw, dus ook zijn, ‘lagere' deel. Door je te concentreren op het goede in hem zul je het lichaam als steeds minder bestendig zien, en zal het uiteindelijk als nauwelijks meer worden gezien dan een schaduw die rond het goede cirkelt. En dit zal je zelfconcept zijn, wanneer je de wereld hebt bereikt die ligt voorbij het schouwspel dat alleen jouw ogen jou te zien kunnen geven. Want je zult wat je ziet niet interpreteren zonder de Hulp die God jou gegeven heeft. En in Zijn visie is er wel degelijk een andere wereld.4. Je leeft evenzeer in die wereld als in deze. Want beide zijn concepten van jouzelf, die weliswaar voor elkaar ingeruild, maar nooit tegelijk aangehangen kunnen worden. Het contrast is veel groter dan jij denkt, want je zult dit zelfconcept liefhebben, omdat het niet voor jou alleen werd gemaakt. Ontstaan als geschenk voor iemand die niet als jouzelf werd gezien, is het jou gegeven. Want jouw vergeving, hem geschonken, is nu voor jullie beiden aanvaard.5. Geloof in hem die aan je zijde gaat, zodat jouw beangstigende zelfconcept kan veranderen. En kijk naar het goede in hem, zodat je niet bang kunt worden vanwege jouw ‘kwade' gedachten, want ze vertroebelen jouw blik op hem niet. En al wat deze omslag vereist, is dat jij bereid bent deze gelukkige verandering plaats te doen vinden. Meer wordt niet gevraagd. Onthoud ten behoeve daarvan wat het zelfconcept dat jij nu bezit voor jou in zijn kielzog heeft meegebracht, en verwelkom het blijde contrast dat jou geboden wordt. Houd je hand uitgestoken, zodat je de gave van zachtmoedige vergeving mag ontvangen die jij schenkt aan iemand wiens behoefte daaraan dezelfde is als die van jou. En laat het wrede concept van jezelf verkeren in een dat Gods vrede brengt.6. Het zelfconcept dat jij nu bezit garandeert dat jouw functie hier voorgoed onvolbracht en onvoltooid blijft. En zo verdoemt het jou tot een bitter gevoel van diepe depressiviteit en nutteloosheid. Toch hoeft het niet star te zijn, tenzij je ervoor kiest het buiten het bereik van iedere hoop op verandering te houden, en het statisch en weggestopt in je denkgeest vast te zetten. Geef het daarentegen aan Hem die begrijpt welke veranderingen er nodig zijn om het de jou gegeven functie te laten vervullen om jou vrede te brengen, opdat jij vrede mag schenken om die als de jouwe te ontvangen. In jouw denkgeest zijn alternatieven beschikbaar, en het is mogelijk om jezelf op een andere manier te zien. Zou jij jezelf niet liever willen zien als onmisbaar voor de verlossing van de wereld dan als vijand van verlossing?7. Het zelfconcept staat als een schild, een stille barricade voor de waarheid, en onttrekt die aan jouw zicht. Alle dingen die je ziet zijn beelden, omdat je ze bekijkt als door een scherm dat je zicht vermindert en je visie verwringt, zodat jij niets helder ziet. Het licht wordt geweerd uit alles wat je ziet. Op zijn best vang jij een glimp op van een schaduw van wat erachter ligt. Op zijn minst kijk jij alleen naar duisternis, en zie je verschrikkelijke verbeeldingen, voortgekomen uit schuldige gedachten en concepten uit angst ontstaan. En wat jij ziet is de hel, want angst is de hel. Alles wat jou gegeven is dient om te bevrijden: zicht, visie en de innerlijke Gids leiden jou allemaal uit de hel met hen die jij liefhebt aan je zijde, en het universum samen met hen.8. Aanschouw je rol in het universum! Aan elk deel van de ware schepping heeft de Heer van Liefde en Leven heel de verlossing uit de ellende van de hel toevertrouwd. En aan elk heeft Hij de genade vergund een verlosser te zijn voor de heiligen die speciaal zijn toevertrouwd aan zijn zorg. En dit leert hij wanneer hij voor het eerst één broeder beziet zoals hij zichzelf ziet, en in hem de spiegel van zichzelf ontwaart. Zo wordt zijn zelfconcept terzijde gelegd, want niets staat tussen zijn zicht en dat waarnaar hij kijkt, om te oordelen over wat hij aanschouwt. En in deze enkelvoudige visie ziet hij het gelaat van Christus, en begrijpt dat hij iedereen beziet zoals hij deze ene aanschouwt. Want er is licht waar eerst duisternis was, en nu is de sluier weggetrokken voor zijn ogen.9. De sluier over het gelaat van Christus, de angst voor God en voor verlossing, en de liefde voor schuld en dood; het zijn allemaal verschillende namen voor een en dezelfde dwaling: dat er een ruimte is tussen jou en je broeder, uit elkaar gehouden door een illusie van jezelf die hem op een afstand houdt van jou, en jou weghoudt van hem. Het zwaard des oordeels is het wapen dat jij aan de illusie van jezelf geeft, opdat die zou kunnen vechten om de ruimte die je broeder op afstand houdt, door liefde onbezet te laten. Maar zolang je dit zwaard vasthoudt, moet je het lichaam wel beschouwen als jezelf, want dan ben je onvermijdelijk afgescheiden van de blik van hem die de spiegel vasthoudt voor een ander beeld van wat hij is en wat jij dus ook moet zijn.10. Wat is verleiding anders dan de wens om in hel en ellende te blijven? En tot wat kan dit anders aanleiding geven dan tot een beeld van jezelf dat ellendig kan zijn, en in hel en kwelling blijft steken? Wie geleerd heeft zijn broeder zo niet te bezien, heeft zichzelf verlost en is zodoende de verlosser van alle anderen. God heeft allen aan iedereen toevertrouwd, want een gedeeltelijke verlosser zou er een zijn die zelf slechts gedeeltelijk is verlost. De heiligen die God jou ter verlossing heeft gegeven, zijn eenvoudig allen die je ontmoet of ziet, zonder te weten wie ze zijn; al degenen die je een ogenblik zag en weer vergeten bent, die je reeds lang kende, of nog ontmoeten zult; degenen die niet meer herinnerd worden en zij die nog niet geboren zijn. Want God heeft jou Zijn Zoon gegeven om hem van elk concept te verlossen dat hij ooit bezat.11. Maar hoe kun je, zolang je in de hel wenst te blijven, de verlosser zijn van de Zoon van God? Hoe zou je zijn heiligheid kennen, zolang je hem los van de jouwe ziet? Want heiligheid wordt gezien door heilige ogen die de onschuld vanbinnen aanschouwen, en haar dus overal verwachten te zien. En dus roepen ze die op in ieder die zij zien, opdat hij mag zijn wat zij van hem verwachten. Dit is de visie van een verlosser: dat hij zijn onschuld ziet in alles waarnaar hij kijkt, en overal zijn eigen verlossing aanschouwt. Hij plaatst geen concept van hemzelf tussen zijn rustige, open ogen en wat hij ziet. Hij brengt het licht naar dat waarnaar hij kijkt, zodat hij het kan zien zoals het werkelijk is.12. Welke vorm verleiding ook lijkt aan te nemen, ze weerspiegelt altijd slechts de wens een zelf te zijn dat jij niet bent. En uit die wens ontstaat een concept dat jou onderwijst dat jij datgene bent wat je wenst te zijn. Het zal jouw zelfconcept blijven tot de wens die er de vader van is, jou niet langer dierbaar is. Maar zolang je die koestert, zul jij je broeder zien naar het evenbeeld van het zelf welks beeld de wens draagt die uit jou geboren is. Want zien kan alleen maar de weergave zijn van een wens, omdat het geen scheppingsvermogen bezit. Maar het kan wel met liefde kijken, of met haat, al naargelang de eenvoudige keuze of jij je wilt verbinden met wat je ziet, of je afgescheiden en afzijdig houden.13. De visie van een verlosser is even onschuldig aan wat je broeder is als dat ze vrij is van enig oordeel, geveld over jezelf. Ze ziet geen verleden, in helemaal niemand.

We zien ieder als broeder en beschouwen alles als vriendelijk en goed. We zijn niet uit op een functie die voorbij de Hemelpoort ligt. Kennis zal terugkeren, wanneer we ons aandeel hebben vervuld. Wij bekommeren ons enkel om het verwelkomen van de waarheid.Onze ogen zijn het waardoor de visie van Christus een wereld ziet die verlost is van elke gedachte aan zonde. Dr. David Bell retired last year from his position as a consultant psychiatrist at the Tavistock and Portman NHS Foundation Trust, where he worked for 25 years. There, he led the Fitzjohns Unit service which provided long-term psychotherapy for those with enduring, severe psychological problems. He is also the former President of the British Psychoanalytic Society. While he was in the Governor role at the Tavistock and Portman Trust, through a series of events, which we cover today, Dr. Bell discovered that something was going terribly wrong in the Children's Gender Identity Development Service, or GIDS. Something I didn't know before speaking to Dave is that the broader Tavistock Service had an established reputation for excellent psychoanalytic treatment models and for providing the highest quality of psychological care. So, clinicians who applied to work there were expecting to join the ranks of the most thoughtful and knowledgeable psychotherapists in the UK. Those young and inexperienced clinicians who were funneled into the GIDS landed in a very different kind of treatment setting. They started raising their complaints and getting nowhere, so they started trickling, one by one, to Dr. Bell with their stories. Not only were they ill-equipped to provide proper, thorough care to kids with incredibly complex stories, but they were also getting a clear message from their direct chain of command: concerns were not going to be properly addressed. In fact, there was a culture of fear about raising these issues and clinicians felt a strong pressure to simply get through their humongous caseloads without rocking the boat. In 2018, Dr. Bell described all of this in a highly critical report on the GIDS which became part of the chain of events, which included critical involvement from our former guests, Marcus and Sue Evans, which led to the Judicial Review (the Kierra Bell Case), the thorough external Cass Review, and its recent decision to close down the GIDS. Dave created a unit for providing psychotherapy for disturbed patients. Dave became a governor at Tavistock. He found little interest at Tavistock in investigating the validity of the GIDS unit. Other doctors at Tavistock had raised their concerns about GIDS, but cautiously. The major complaints at Tavistock were caseloads and unresearched affirmations of children with gender dysphoria. Unexperienced clinicians were often confused about the purpose of the organization. Against a legal recommendation, Dave sent his review of GIDS and the accompanying complaints to the board. There was very little follow-up with adolescent patients so statistics were unavailable. Dave still doesn't know who leaked his report to the press. Marcus Evans resigned from Tavistock because Dave's report was being undermined. Eventually, all the child psychotherapists left the organization. The judicial review of the report found that children were not able to consent. Sonya Applebee took action against the trust for the intimidation she experienced after voicing her opinion. The Cass Review confirmed Dave's belief that no child should be affirmed. At 11 or 12,...

Ellie was a gender nonconforming 90s kid in the UK. She became a patient of what came to be the Gender Identity Development Services (GIDS) at Tavistock. She was seen at the time by Dr. DiCeglie, a child and adolescent psychiatrist, and the GIDS founder. Ellie describes her psychological treatment with him and her decision, early on in life, that medicalization simply was not an option. She tells us about her family life and coming to terms with being gay in her teens. Ellie is now married to her wife and living happily. But she also talks about gender dysphoria being something she, and many lesbians, simply learn to live with. She offers some fascinating insights about the way technology is used, and social media, in particular, can mimic a kind of schizophrenia experience, with too many competing voices and opinions influencing the minds of teens today. When approached with the idea, Ellie thought of medicalization and surgery as a ridiculous option. Ellie was treated by the doctor who founded GIDS at Tavistock. Some doctors are in the business for status. Entering puberty Ellie did have one influential female friend. Ellie's doctor provided a Watchful Waiting period. Buffy the Vampire Slayer offered Ellie a glimpse into the idea that women could be superheroes and embody their power. Everyone naturally has a relationship with their gender. The thing, Ellie says, she desired from masculinity is to have height. Surgery couldn't provide that. Gender dysphoria is not static. It is constantly changing. Ellie had unrequited crushes on straight girls but her first sexual encounters were with men because that is who approached her. Romantically Ellie is interested in women, physically she considers herself bisexual. Ellie considers social media to be a drug. Ellie was interviewed extensively for Hannah Brown's upcoming book about the Tavistock Clinic.

Evidence has emerged this year that treatment at gender clinics for children are actually increasing suicidal ideation. The doctor's belief that gender ideology is "probably programmed" enabled the hospital to not only push chest binding and genital tucking, but life-changing drugs. So let’s talk about the data: Data from the Gender Identity Development Service (GIDS), the world's largest clinic treating transgender-identified youth, shows that patients treated at or referred to the clinic are at an estimated 5.5 times greater risk of committing suicide than the general population of adolescents, according to a new paper published this month in the Archives of Sexual Behaviour. There are several takeaways from Michael Biggs' study: Trans-identified youth treated or referred to GIDs are more likely to die by suicide than youth in the general population. The suicide rate is low for both populations. We cannot conclude that the GIDs patients committed suicide because of their trans identity, versus another cause. All of these numbers are estimates based on the best available data; the study results would have been more accurate if a comparison between GIDs suicides and suicides amongst youth getting mental health care could be made. Based on what Biggs found, the media narrative that trans youth are suicides waiting to happen is a lie that does not help—and is likely to harm—trans-identified youth and their families. Between 2010 and 2020, four youth out of 15,000 patients died by "known or suspected" suicide. The annual suicide rate of trans-identified youth was 0.03 percent. Some colleges and universities are requiring vaccines and boosters for all students — even those who take online classes. Georgetown University requires even fully online students to be fully vaccinated if at any point their studies will bring them to campus. At the University of California, Berkeley, even vaccinated students will be banned from signing up for classes until they accept a booster shot. Recipients typically aren’t eligible for boosters until several months after their primary vaccination series, and in the case of students not yet eligible for their booster shot, UC Berkeley rules say students “will not have an enrollment until 30 days after you have become eligible to get your booster.” Other jurisdictions are rolling vaccine mandates back slowly to balance the growing opposition to COVID-19 rules with the demands of groups that want them implemented indefinitely. But in a handful of liberal cities, universities, and companies, some people are still subject to vaccine mandates that may require as many as four shots to keep their jobs or spots in school. Some of the mandates are facing growing protests and legal challenges. Roughly two dozen former firefighters in Seattle filed a lawsuit against the city this week for denying their requests for religious exemptions to the vaccine and firing them. New York City’s largest police union successfully sued to invalidate the city’s vaccine mandate for its members; a judge ruled this week that the union’s contract with the police department did not include an ability for the department to enforce such a mandate. The judge ordered the reinstatement of all the union-backed members fired under the vaccination requirements. Even so, New York City officials said they planned to fight the ruling. More than 1,700 city workers across all departments had been fired as of this month over their refusal to comply with the vaccine mandate. Four fired employees of a retirement care facility in Alabama filed a lawsuit last week against their former employer, alleging religious discrimination. The former employees claim their sincere requests for religious exemptions from the company’s vaccine mandate were denied improperly. Political support for such mandates has dropped precipitously over the past year, and even some of the most ardent defenders of mandates have rolled back requirements they once championed. Washington Gov. Jay Inslee (D), for example, boasted in January that his vaccine requirement had nearly doubled the vaccination rate of the state workforce. He stressed at the time that “no intervention is as important as vaccination” in fighting COVID-19. Inslee rescinded the vaccine mandate earlier this month, setting an Oct. 31 date for its expiration while citing the value of “different tools that are now more appropriate for the era we’ve entered.” Goldman Sachs had for months required not just COVID-19 vaccines but booster shots as well for employees working from its offices. The investment bank quietly ended its vaccine mandate in late August, as well as its testing requirements and mask guidance. Other major companies that pushed vaccine mandates aggressively last year, when the Biden administration was fighting an ultimately losing battle to require vaccination in virtually all workplaces, have since dropped their policies. Comcast recently dropped its vaccine mandate for employees as it struggles to lure workers back into the office, while JPMorgan Chase said earlier this year that it would start hiring unvaccinated workers again. But some corporations continue to insist workers get their COVID-19 shots. Google and Facebook, for example, require vaccines for in-person employees, according to Axios . Among the most controversial remaining vaccine mandates is one imposed by Washington, D.C., leaders on children attending public school. Students 12 years and older must be fully vaccinated by January to remain in Washington, D.C., public schools; the deadline was originally set for the beginning of the school year this fall, but vaccination rates among black students, in particular, were low enough that city leaders pushed back the effective date. Some colleges and universities are requiring vaccines and boosters for all students — even those who take online classes. Georgetown University requires even fully online students to be fully vaccinated if at any point their studies will bring them to campus. At the University of California, Berkeley, even vaccinated students will be banned from signing up for classes until they accept a booster shot. Recipients typically aren’t eligible for boosters until several months after their primary vaccination series, and in the case of students not yet eligible for their booster shot, UC Berkeley rules say students “will not have an enrollment until 30 days after you have become eligible to get your booster.” Other jurisdictions are rolling vaccine mandates back slowly to balance the growing opposition to COVID-19 rules with the demands of groups that want them implemented indefinitely. The Polish government believes the severity of damages from World War II means that further, direct payments are needed in compensation. Numerous fights broke out among rival fans at the Kanjuruhan Stadium in East Java province’s Malang city just as Persebaya Surabaya defeated home team Arema Malang 3-2 in the Indonesian Premier League Match on Sunday. In an effort to break up the fights, riot police fired tear gas which sent hundreds of panicked fans fleeing for the stadium exits, East Java Police Chief Nico Afinta said. In the chaos, dozens of people were trampled to death instantly, while others suffocated. Afinta said over 300 others were rushed to local hospitals, but many died on the way and during treatment. The disaster began when fans of Arema had pelted players and officials with bottles and other objects following their loss, witnesses said. Many then flooded the field to confront the team’s management about the unwanted outcome – Armea’s first home loss to Persebaya in 23 years. Video circulating on social media shows fans from each side of the soccer pitch sprint toward midfield, appearing ready to fight each other before riot police suddenly run between them. De voorbijgaande aard van Gods Zoon is immers het ‘bewijs' dat zijn omheiningen werken en de taak uitvoeren die zijn denkgeest ze toebedeelt. Want als zijn éénzijn nog steeds onaangetast was, wie zou dan kunnen aanvallen en wie zou aangevallen kunnen worden? Wie zou overwinnaar kunnen zijn? En wie diens prooi? Wie zou slachtoffer kunnen zijn? En wie de moordenaar? En als hij niet doodging, welk ‘bewijs' is er dan dat Gods eeuwige Zoon kan worden vernietigd?Het lichaam is een droom. Zoals andere dromen schijnt het soms een beeld van geluk te schilderen, maar kan het heel plotseling omslaan in angst, waaruit iedere droom ontstaat. Want alleen liefde schept in waarheid, en de waarheid kan nooit bang zijn. Gemaakt om beangstigend te zijn, moet het lichaam wel het doel dienen dat eraan gegeven is. Maar wij kunnen het doel veranderen waaraan het lichaam zal gehoorzamen, door anders te gaan denken over waartoe het dient.Het lichaam is het middel waardoor Gods Zoon zijn innerlijke gezondheid hervindt. Hoewel het gemaakt werd om hem zonder ontsnappingsmogelijkheid in te sluiten in de hel, is nu het hemelse doel in de plaats gekomen van het najagen van de hel. De Zoon van God reikt zijn broeder de hand om hem te helpen samen met hem de weg te gaan. Nu is het lichaam heilig. Nu dient het om de denkgeest te genezen, terwijl het gemaakt was om die te doden.Je zult je vereenzelvigen met dat waarvan jij denkt dat het jou veiligheid biedt. Nu kende hij zichzelf niet en dacht hij dat zijn eigen Identiteit verloren was.Verlossing is ongedaan maken in die zin dat ze niets doet, en nalaat de wereld van dromen en boosaardigheid te steunen. Zo laat zij illusies los. Door die geen steun te geven laat zij ze enkel kalm tot stof vergaan. En wat zij verborgen hielden wordt nu geopenbaard: een altaar voor Gods heilige Naam waarop Zijn Woord geschreven staat, met de geschenken van jouw vergeving daarvoor neergelegd en de Godsherinnering niet ver daarachter.Laten we dagelijks deze heilige plaats bezoeken om er samen een tijdje te vertoeven. Hier delen wij onze laatste droom. Het is een droom waarin geen verdriet schuilt, want hij doet ons heel de heerlijkheid vermoeden die ons door God gegeven werd. Het gras duwt zich door de bodem heen, de bomen botten nu en er zijn vogels in hun takken komen wonen. De aarde wordt in nieuw perspectief herboren. De rest is volledig onder Gods hoede, en heeft geen gids nodig. Maar deze wilde waangedachte heeft hulp nodig, want in haar waan denkt ze dat ze de Zoon van God is, heel en almachtig, enig heerser van het koninkrijk dat ze heeft afgezonderd om het op tirannieke wijze door waanzin tot gehoorzaamheid en slavernij te dwingen. Dit is het kleine deel dat jij meent de Hemel te hebben ontstolen. Geef het aan de Hemel terug. De Hemel heeft het niet verloren, maar jij hebt de Hemel uit het zicht verloren. Laat de Heilige Geest het uit het vergane koninkrijk verwijderen waarin jij het afgezonderd hebt, omringd door duisternis, bewaakt door aanval, en versterkt door haat. Binnen zijn barricaden bevindt zich nog steeds een nietig segmentje van Gods Zoon, compleet en heilig, sereen en zich onbewust van wat jij denkt dat het omringt.2. Wees niet afgescheiden, want Degene die het wel omgeeft heeft jou eenheid gebracht, en jouw geringe gave van duisternis teruggegeven aan het eeuwig licht. Hoe gebeurt zoiets? Dat is uiterst eenvoudig, want het is gebaseerd op wat dit koninkrijkje in wezen is. De dorre zandvlakten, de duisternis en de doodsheid worden alleen door de ogen van het lichaam gezien. Zijn sombere zicht is vervormd, en de boodschappen die het overbrengt aan jou die het gemaakt hebt om je bewustzijn in te perken, zijn gering en begrensd, en dermate versplinterd dat ze geen betekenis hebben.3. Vanuit de wereld van lichamen, door krankzinnigheid gemaakt, lijken krankzinnige boodschappen teruggestuurd te worden naar de denkgeest die haar gemaakt heeft. En deze boodschappen getuigen van deze wereld, en verklaren haar waar. Want jij hebt deze boodschappers uitgezonden om dit bij jou terug te brengen. Alles wat deze boodschappen je doorgeven is volstrekt uiterlijk. Er zijn geen boodschappen die spreken van wat onder de oppervlakte ligt, want het lichaam kan hiervan niet spreken. Maar God kan jou daar wel brengen, als je bereid bent de Heilige Geest door schijnbare verschrikking heen te volgen, en erop vertrouwt dat Hij je niet in de steek laat en jou daar achterlaat. Want het is niet Zijn bedoeling – maar alleen de jouwe – om jou angst aan te jagen. Jij komt ernstig in de verleiding Hem bij de buitenste kring van de angst in de steek te laten, maar Hij wil je er veilig doorheen en ver aan voorbij leiden.4. De cirkel van angst ligt net onder het niveau dat het lichaam ziet, en lijkt het hele fundament te zijn waarop de wereld rust. Hier bevinden zich al de illusies, de vervormde gedachten, de waanzinnige aanvallen, de woede, de wraak en het verraad, die gemaakt werden om de schuld te verankeren, zodat daaruit de wereld kon ontstaan die hem verborgen moest houden. Zijn schaduw stijgt voldoende naar de oppervlakte om te zorgen dat zijn meest uitwendige verschijningsvormen in het duister blijven en daar wanhoop en eenzaamheid zaaien, en maken dat het daar vreugdeloos blijft. De intensiteit van de schuld wordt echter versluierd door zijn zware omhulsels, en blijft gescheiden van dat wat werd gemaakt om hem verborgen te houden. Het lichaam kan dit niet zien, want het lichaam ontstond hieruit om hem te beschermen door hem aan het oog te onttrekken. De ogen van het lichaam zullen hem nooit te zien krijgen. Maar ze zullen wel zien wat hij dicteert.5. Het lichaam zal de boodschapper van schuld blijven, en zal handelen zoals hij dat bepaalt, zolang jij gelooft dat schuld realiteit is. Want de realiteit van schuld is de illusie die hem zwaar, ondoorzichtig en ondoordringbaar lijkt te maken, en een reëel fundament voor het denksysteem van het ego. Zijn ijlheid en doorzichtigheid zijn niet duidelijk tot je het licht erachter ziet. En dan zie je dat hij een tere sluier is voor het licht.6. Deze schijnzware barrière, deze kunstmatige bodem die wel een rots lijkt, is als een laaghangende donkere wolkenbank die een massieve muur lijkt te vormen voor de zon. Haar ondoordringbare voorkomen is een en al illusie. Ze wijkt zachtjes voor de bergtoppen die erbovenuit rijzen, en heeft niet de minste macht iemand tegen te houden die de wil heeft erbovenuit te klimmen en de zon te zien. Ze is niet sterk genoeg om een speld te stoppen in zijn val, of om een veertje te dragen. Er kan niets op rusten, want het is slechts een illusie van een fundament. Probeer haar maar eens aan te raken en ze verdwijnt; poog haar te grijpen, en je handen houden niets vast.7. Toch is het makkelijk in deze wolkenbank een hele wereld te zien verrijzen. Een massieve bergketen, een meer, een stad; dit alles verrijst in je verbeelding, en vanaf de wolken komen de boden van jouw waarneming bij je terug, en verzekeren jou dat het er is. Gedaanten komen duidelijk naar voren en bewegen zich in het rond, handelingen lijken echt, en vormen verschijnen en verschuiven van lieftalligheid naar het groteske. En heen en weer gaat het, zolang jij het kinderspel van doen alsof wilt spelen. Maar hoelang jij het ook speelt en hoeveel verbeelding je er ook in stopt, je verwart het niet met de wereld daarbeneden, en probeert het ook niet werkelijk te maken.8. Zo zou het ook horen te gaan met de donkere wolken van schuld die evenmin ondoordringbaar, en even weinig substantieel zijn. Je zult je er niet aan bezeren wanneer je erdoorheen reist. Laat jouw Gids jou hun niet-substantiële aard leren terwijl Hij jou eraan voorbij leidt, want daaronder bevindt zich een wereld van licht waarop ze geen schaduwen werpen. Hun schaduwen liggen op de wereld achter ze, nog verder weg van het licht. Maar hun schaduwen kunnen niet van ze vandaan vallen naar het licht.9. Deze wereld van licht, deze kring van helderheid is de werkelijke wereld, waar schuld vergeving ontmoet. Hier wordt de buitenwereld met nieuwe ogen gezien, zonder de schaduw van schuld eroverheen. Hier ben je vergeven, want hier heb jij iedereen vergeven. Hier is de nieuwe waarneming, waarin alles helder en stralend van onschuld is, gewassen in de wateren der vergeving, en gezuiverd van iedere slechte gedachte die jij eroverheen hebt gelegd. Hier is er geen aanval op Gods Zoon, en ben jij welkom. Hier ligt jouw onschuld te wachten om jou te kleden en te beschermen, en je gereed te maken voor de laatste stap van je reis naar binnen. Hier worden de donkere en zware gewaden van schuld afgelegd, en met zachtheid vervangen door zuiverheid en liefde.10. Maar zelfs vergeving is niet het einde. Vergeving maakt weliswaar lieflijk, maar ze schept niet. Ze is de bron van genezing, maar slechts de gezant van de liefde, niet de Bron daarvan. Hier wordt je heengeleid, zodat God Zelf ongehinderd de laatste stap kan zetten, want hier staat niets de liefde in de weg, maar laat haar zichzelf zijn. Een stap voorbij deze heilige plaats van vergeving, een stap die nog verder naar binnen leidt, maar een die jij niet kunt zetten, voert jou naar iets volkomen anders. Hier is de Bron van het licht, waar niets wordt waargenomen, vergeven of herschapen. Maar waar louter wordt gekend.11. Deze cursus zal tot kennis leiden, maar kennis zelf valt nog steeds buiten het bestek van ons leerplan. Ook is het geenszins nodig dat we proberen te spreken over iets wat voor eeuwig noodzakelijkerwijs voorbij alle woorden ligt. We hoeven ons alleen te herinneren dat al wie de werkelijke wereld bereikt – en verder kan het leren niet gaan – daaraan voorbij zal gaan, maar op een andere wijze. Waar het leren eindigt begint God, want het leren eindigt ten overstaan van Hem die totaal is waar Hij begint, en waar geen einde is. Het is niet aan ons stil te blijven staan bij wat niet verworven kan worden. Er is te veel te leren. De gereedheid voor kennis dient eerst nog te worden verworven.12. Liefde wordt niet geleerd. Haar betekenis ligt in haarzelf. En jouw leren eindigt wanneer je hebt ingezien wat ze allemaal niet is. Dat is de belemmering; dat is wat ongedaan moet worden gemaakt. Liefde wordt niet geleerd, want er is nooit een tijd geweest waarin jij haar niet hebt gekend. Leren is nutteloos in de Tegenwoordigheid van je Schepper, wiens erkenning van jou en de jouwe van Hem alle leren zover overstijgt, dat al wat je geleerd hebt zonder betekenis is, en voor eeuwig vervangen is door de kennis van de liefde en haar ene betekenis.13. Jouw relatie met je broeder is uit de wereld der schaduwen weggerukt, en haar onheilige bedoeling is veilig door de hindernissen van schuld heen geloodst, met vergeving gereinigd, en is stralend en stevig geworteld in de wereld van het licht gezet. Vandaaruit roept ze jou op de koers te volgen die zij genomen heeft, die haar hoog boven het duister heeft uitgetild en zachtjes voor de poorten van de Hemel neergezet. Het heilig ogenblik waarin jij en je broeder werden verenigd is slechts de gezant van de liefde, van voorbij vergeving gezonden om jou te herinneren aan al wat erachter ligt. Toch is vergeving het middel waardoor het zal worden herinnerd.14. En wanneer de Godsherinnering in de heilige plaats van vergeving tot jou is gekomen, zul jij je niets anders herinneren, en zal de herinnering zelf even nutteloos geworden zijn als leren, want jouw enige doel zal scheppen zijn. Maar dit kun je niet weten voordat alle waarneming gereinigd en gezuiverd, en tenslotte voorgoed opgeheven is. Vergeving heft alleen het onware op, licht de schaduwen van de wereld en draagt die in haar zachtmoedigheid veilig en zeker naar de heldere wereld van een nieuwe en zuivere waarneming. Daar ligt nu jouw doel. En daar wacht jou vrede.

We gebruiken ze slechts als leidraad waarvan we nu niet meer afhankelijk zijn. Want nu zoeken we alleen rechtstreekse ervaring van de waarheid. De resterende lessen vormen louter een inleiding tot het tijdstip waarop we de wereld van pijn verlaten om in de vrede binnen te gaan. Nu beginnen we het doel dat deze cursus heeft gesteld te bereiken, en komen we tot het einde waarop ons oefenen steeds was gericht.Nu proberen we de oefening eenvoudig een begin te laten zijn. Want in stille afwachting wachten we op onze God en Vader. Hij heeft beloofd dat Hij de laatste stap Zelf zal zetten. En we zijn er zeker van dat Hij Zijn beloften houdt. We zijn ver gekomen op onze weg, en wachten nu op Hem. We zullen doorgaan elke ochtend en elke avond tijd met Hem door te brengen, zolang ons dat gelukkig maakt. We zullen de tijd niet langer beschouwen als een kwestie van duur. We gebruiken zoveel we nodig hebben voor het resultaat dat we verlangen. Ook zullen we onze uurlijkse herinneringen daartussenin niet vergeten, en God aanroepen wanneer we Hem nodig hebben, als we in de verleiding komen ons doel te vergeten.We zullen doorgaan met een centrale gedachte voor elke dag die komt, en die gedachte gebruiken om onze tijden van rust in te leiden en onze denkgeest zo nodig te kalmeren. Toch zullen we ons niet tevredenstellen met simpel oefenen in de resterende heilige ogenblikken die het jaar besluiten dat we aan God gegeven hebben. We zeggen enkele eenvoudige woorden van welkom en verwachten dat onze Vader Zichzelf openbaart, zoals Hij heeft beloofd. We hebben Hem aangeroepen, en Hij heeft beloofd dat Zijn Zoon niet zonder antwoord blijft wanneer hij Zijn Naam aanroept.Nu komen we tot Hem met alleen Zijn Woord in onze denkgeest en in ons hart, en wachten we tot Hij de stap naar ons toe zet die Hij, zoals Hij ons via Zijn Stem heeft verteld, niet zal nalaten te zetten wanneer we Hem daartoe uitnodigen. Hij heeft Zijn Zoon in al diens waanzin niet verlaten, noch diens vertrouwen in Hem geschonden. Heeft Hij met Zijn trouw niet de uitnodiging verdiend die Hij zoekt om ons gelukkig te maken? Die uitnodiging zullen we aanbieden en ze zal worden aanvaard. Zo zullen nu onze ogenblikken met Hem worden besteed. We zeggen de uitnodigende woorden die Zijn Stem ons ingeeft en dan wachten we op Zijn komst.Nu is de tijd der profetie vervuld. Nu zijn alle aloude beloften gehandhaafd en ten volle gehouden. Er rest geen stap die de tijd kan scheiden van zijn vervulling. Want nu kunnen we niet falen. Zit in stilte en wacht op je Vader. Het is Zijn Wil naar jou toe te komen wanneer jij hebt ingezien dat het jouw wil is dat Hij dat doet. En je zou nooit zo ver hebben kunnen komen als je niet inzag, hoe vaag ook, dat het jouw wil is.Ik ben zo dicht bij je dat we niet kunnen falen. Vader, we geven deze heilige momenten aan U, uit dankbaarheid jegens Hem die ons geleerd heeft hoe we de wereld van verdriet kunnen verlaten in ruil voor haar vervanging, die U ons hebt gegeven. We kijken nu niet achterom. We kijken vooruit en vestigen onze blik op het eind van de reis. Neem deze kleine dankgeschenken van ons aan, nu wij met de visie van Christus achter de wereld die wij hebben gemaakt een andere aanschouwen, en die beschouwen als de volledige vervanging van die van ons.En nu wachten we in stilte, onbevreesd en zeker van Uw komst. We hebben onze weg proberen te vinden door de Gids te volgen die U ons gezonden hebt. Wij kenden de weg niet, maar U bent ons niet vergeten. En we weten dat U ons nu niet vergeten zult. We vragen slechts dat Uw aloude beloften worden gehouden, zoals dat Uw Wil is. Door dit te vragen, willen we dit met U. De Vader en de Zoon, wier heilige Wil al-wat-is geschapen heeft, kunnen in niets falen. In deze zekerheid ondernemen we deze laatste paar stappen naar U, en verlaten ons in vertrouwen op Uw Liefde, die niet de Zoon in de steek zal laten die tot U roept.En zo beginnen we aan het laatste deel van dit ene heilige jaar, dat we samen hebben doorgebracht zoekend naar de waarheid en naar God, haar ene Schepper. We hebben de weg gevonden die Hij voor ons gekozen heeft, en hebben de keuze gemaakt die te volgen zoals Hij dat van ons wil. Zijn Hand heeft ons overeind gehouden. Zijn Gedachten hebben de duisternis van onze denkgeest verlicht. Zijn Liefde heeft ons onophoudelijk toegeroepen sinds het begin der tijden.Wij hadden de wens dat God er niet in slagen zou de Zoon te hebben die Hij voor Zichzelf geschapen heeft. We wilden dat God Zichzelf veranderde, en zou zijn wat wij van Hem wilden maken. En we geloofden dat onze waanzinnige verlangens de waarheid waren. Nu zijn we blij dat dit allemaal ongedaan is gemaakt, en dat we niet langer denken dat illusies waar zijn. De Godsherinnering schemert aan de wijde horizonten van onze denkgeest. Nog even, en ze zal weer opkomen. Nog even, en wij die Gods Zonen zijn, zijn veilig thuis, waar Hij wil dat we zijn.Nu is de noodzaak om te oefenen bijna voorbij. Want in dit laatste deel zullen we gaan begrijpen dat we slechts God hoeven aan te roepen, en alle verleidingen verdwijnen. In plaats van woorden hoeven we slechts Zijn Liefde te voelen. In plaats van gebeden hoeven we slechts Zijn Naam te noemen. In plaats van te oordelen hoeven we slechts stil te zijn en alles te laten genezen. We zullen de manier aanvaarden waarop Gods plan eindigen zal, zoals we de manier ontvingen waarop het begonnen is. Nu is het voltooid. Dit jaar heeft ons tot de eeuwigheid gebracht.We handhaven één ander gebruik van woorden. Van tijd tot tijd zullen onze dagelijkse lessen en de perioden van woordeloze, diepe ervaring die daarop zouden moeten volgen, afgewisseld worden door instructies over een thema van speciaal belang. Deze speciale gedachten horen elke dag te worden herhaald, waarmee je steeds doorgaat tot de volgende je gegeven wordt. Ze dienen langzaam gelezen en even overdacht te worden, voorafgaand aan een van de heilige, gezegende momenten van die dag. We geven de eerste van deze instructies nu.Wat is vergeving?Vergeving ziet in dat wat jij dacht dat je broeder jou heeft aangedaan, niet heeft plaatsgevonden. Wat ze niet doet is: zonden kwijtschelden en ze werkelijk maken. Ze ziet dat er geen zonde is geweest. En in die zienswijze zijn al jouw zonden vergeven. Wat is zonde anders dan een onjuist idee omtrent Gods Zoon? Vergeving ziet eenvoudig de onjuistheid daarvan en laat het daarom los. Wat dan vrij is om nu de plaats daarvan in te nemen, is de Wil van God.Een niet-vergevende gedachte is er een die een oordeel velt dat ze niet in twijfel trekt, ook al is het niet waar. De denkgeest is gesloten en zal niet worden bevrijd. De gedachte beschermt projectie en trekt haar ketenen strakker aan, zodat vervormingen meer versluierd en verborgen zijn, minder makkelijk toegankelijk voor twijfel en nog verder weggehouden van gezond verstand. Wat kan er komen tussen een starre projectie en het doel dat ze als haar gewenste bestemming gekozen heeft?Een niet-vergevende gedachte doet vele dingen. In koortsachtige actie jaagt ze haar doel na, waarbij ze verwringt en omverwerpt wat ze als een doorkruising van haar gekozen pad beschouwt. Verdraaiing is haar doel en tevens het middel waarmee ze dat tot stand wil brengen. Ze doet woeste pogingen de werkelijkheid te vermorzelen, zonder zich ook maar enigszins te bekommeren om wat haar gezichtspunt lijkt tegen te spreken.Vergeving daarentegen is stil en doet in alle rust niets. Ze schendt geen enkel aspect van de werkelijkheid, en probeert die evenmin te verdraaien tot een verschijningsvorm die haar aanstaat. Ze kijkt alleen, en wacht, en oordeelt niet. Wie niet wil vergeven, moet wel oordelen, want hij moet zijn onvermogen om te vergeven rechtvaardigen. Maar wie zichzelf vergeven wil, moet leren de waarheid te verwelkomen precies zoals die is.Doe daarom niets en laat vergeving je tonen wat jou te doen staat, via Hem die je Gids is, je Verlosser en Beschermer, sterk in hoop en zeker van jouw uiteindelijk succes. Hij heeft jou al vergeven, want dat is Zijn functie, Hem gegeven door God. Nu moet jij Zijn functie delen en vergeven wie Hij heeft verlost, wiens zondeloosheid Hij ziet, en wie Hij eert als de Zoon van God.LES 221In vrede zij mijn denkgeest. Laat al mijn gedachten stil zijn.Vader, vandaag kom ik tot U om de vrede te zoeken die U alleen kunt geven. Ik kom in stilte. In de rust van mijn hart, in de diepste domeinen van mijn denkgeest wacht ik en luister naar Uw Stem. Mijn Vader, spreek tot mij vandaag. Ik kom om Uw Stem te horen in stilte, vol overtuiging en liefde, in de zekerheid dat U mijn roep zult horen en mij antwoorden zult.Nu wachten we in rust en vrede. God is hier, omdat we samen wachten. Ik weet zeker dat Hij tot jou zal spreken, en jij Hem horen zult. Aanvaard mijn vertrouwen, want het is dat van jou. Onze denkgeest is één. We wachten met één bedoeling: het antwoord van onze Vader te horen op onze roep, onze gedachten stil te laten zijn en Zijn vrede te vinden, en Hem tot ons te horen spreken over wat wij zijn, tot Hij Zich aan Zijn Zoon openbaart.

Naast de minstens vijftien minuten die je er ‘s morgens en ‘s avonds aan besteedt, en de herinneringsmomenten die je de hele dag door elk uur houdt, dien je het idee zo vaak je kunt ertussendoor te gebruiken. Elk van deze ideeën, mits werkelijk geleerd, zou op zich voor verlossing voldoende zijn. Elk zou genoeg zijn om jou en de wereld te bevrijden van elke vorm van slavernij, en de Godsherinnering uit te nodigen opnieuw te komen.Met dit in gedachten beginnen we onze oefening, waarbij we zorgvuldig de ideeën herhalen die de Heilige Geest ons in onze laatste twintig lessen heeft geschonken. Elk omvat het hele leerplan, mits dat idee begrepen, geoefend, aanvaard en toegepast wordt op alles wat heel de dag door lijkt te gebeuren. Een is genoeg. Maar op dat ene mag geen enkele uitzondering worden gemaakt. En daarom is het nodig dat we ze allemaal gebruiken en tot één laten versmelten, waarbij elk aan het geheel dat we leren bijdraagt.Deze oefensessies zijn, net als in onze vorige herhaling, gerangschikt rond een centraal thema, waarmee we elke les beginnen en eindigen. Het is dit:Ik ben niet een lichaam. Ik ben vrij.Want ik blijf wat ik ben, zo schiep God mij.De dag begint en eindigt hiermee. En we herhalen het, telkens op het hele uur, of wanneer we er tussendoor aan denken dat we een functie hebben die de wereld die we zien te boven gaat. Afgezien hiervan en van een herhaling van de speciale gedachte die we voor die dag oefenen, wordt op geen andere vorm van oefening aangedrongen dan dat je alles grondig los laat wat jouw denkgeest verstopt en doof maakt voor rede, eenvoudige waarheid en gezond verstand.We zullen bij deze herhaling proberen alle woorden en speciale vormen van oefenen te ontstijgen. Want deze keer proberen we in een hoger tempo en langs een korter pad te komen tot de vrede en sereniteit van God. We sluiten slechts onze ogen en vergeten dan alles wat we meenden te weten en te begrijpen. Want zo worden we bevrijd van alles wat we niet wisten en niet begrijpen konden.Eén uitzondering is er maar op dit ontbreken van structuur. Sta niet toe dat ook maar één loze gedachte onweerlegd voorbijgaat. Als je er een ontdekt, ontken dan dat die vat op jou heeft en haast je je denkgeest ervan te verzekeren dat dit niet is wat hij verlangt. Laat dan rustig de gedachte die je ontkend hebt opgeheven worden, en snel en zeker worden vervangen door het idee dat we oefenen voor die dag.Wanneer je aan verleiding blootstaat, haast je dan om je er vrij van te verklaren met de woorden:Deze gedachte wil ik niet. In plaats daarvan kies ik _________.En herhaal dan het idee voor de dag en laat dat de plaats innemen van wat jij dacht. Afgezien van dergelijke speciale toepassingen van het idee van elke dag, voegen we slechts enkele specifieke uitdrukkingen of gedachten toe als hulp bij het oefenen. In plaats daarvan geven we deze momenten van stilte aan de Leraar die in stilte onderwijst, van vrede spreekt en onze gedachten elke betekenis geeft die ze maar hebben.Aan Hem draag ik deze herhaling voor jou op. Ik plaats jou onder Zijn hoede en laat Hem jou leren wat je moet zeggen, denken en doen, telkens wanneer jij je tot Hem wendt. Hij zal niet nalaten er voor jou te zijn, telkens wanneer jij Zijn hulp inroept. Laten we de hele herhaling waaraan we nu beginnen opdragen aan Hem, en laten we bovendien niet vergeten aan Wie deze wordt gegeven, terwijl we dag na dag oefenen en voortgaan in de richting van het doel dat Hij ons heeft gesteld, waarbij we Hem toestaan ons te leren hoe we moeten gaan, en volkomen op Hem vertrouwen voor de manier waarop elke oefenperiode het best een liefdevol geschenk van vrijheid aan de wereld worden kan.LES 215Herhaling van de les 195Ik ben niet een lichaam.
