Sounds Like Radio is back with Volume 179 and today Your Humble Host will be talkin' all about The Great Gildersleeve from July 9, 1952 and his plans to go out on that lake with his new found girlfriend (or so he thinks) Miss McKinley. She's pretty fickle though as she already has plans of her own. Uh oh, trouble in paradise. But if I know Gildy he'll figure a way. To help out our hero we have the wild and wonderful Wanda Jackson (our featured picture this week), Vaughn Monroe,, Kay Starr, Bing Crosby & the Mills Brothers, Ella Mae Morse (she's another spitfire) & Eddy Arnold. But Your Humble Host is never satisfied until he plays you a bonus song and this is from our own record collection of the 1970's, a beautiful song by Tim Moore. You might want to get out your hanky for them tears when listening to this one.

Oh, Your Humble Host has an action packed Great Gildersleeve on Sounds Like Radio Volume 167 this week. It seems our hero is wanted by a desperate woman who claims Gildy is her runaway husband missing for more than a decade. Oh no, Gildy's never been married it's all a mistake. Nothing to do now but put on your running shoes. Today's show originally heard April 2, 1952. Well, I hate to see Gildy in a pickle and so do these folks who all have a word of advice: Eddy Arnold, Billie Holiday, Bing Crosby, Ink Spots, Kay Starr, Dean Martin, Ella Fitzgerald & Louis Jordan.

Time for Sounds Like Radio Volume 161 with Your Humble Host. Today the Great Gildersleeve from February 20, 1952 has lined up with the mayor an important job for himself. Or so he thinks, till this young college gal comes along and now the mayor has her in mind for the job, of course. Gildersleeve is now worried this new gal may find him inefficient, she's the efficiency expert don't you know. Well, I have some folks with me to calm Gildy's nerves. On hand today are Fred Astaire, Leanne Rimes, Eddy Arnold, Betty Boop, Bing Crosby, Georgia Gibbs, Nat King Cole & Kay Starr. We'll also get a bit of yodeling in with Elton Britt and a fantastic yodel song. Well, all this may not help Gildy but it sure sounds great to listen to.

Gildy's pooped but is too afraid to admit it. Oh boy, quite a situation, and a very funny show with one of the funniest endings to a Gildy show I've heard. Your Humble Host says no more except we have some fine music today to assist in this little predicament. Johnny Cash, Kay Starr, Madeleine Peyroux all describe how Gildy feels, Bing Crosby tells us when it's best to rest, Hal Kemp and Skinny Ennis sing of the joys of a date, Jaye P. Morgan's on hand to wake up the boys and BONUS song time Pepino DiCapri sings (in English) from the soundtrack of a classic Italian movie of the early '60's Il Sorpasso translated-The Easy Life. Rather than play Christmas shows for you in September and October we're going to delay those episodes until our own last week of November. This way the current Waterman Christmas season will synchronize with our own Christmas season. We're not skipping any, we're just not listening to them till the last week of November. Instead today we're going back to the 2 months of Gildy episodes that occurred just BEFORE our Sounds Like Radio Episode One. We started Sounds Like Radio Vol. 1 with the Oct. 22, 1947 show and today we're listening to the May 14, 1947 show. Episodes we've never heard on Sounds Like Radio before. In today's show Peevy, our friendly neighborhood druggist has skipped town. He's missing!!! Where's he gone??? You'll even hear a very rare appearance of Mrs. Peevy today!! We'll find out what's what and to help out will be Kay Starr, the Ink Spots, Jaye P. Morgan, Bing Crosby, Teresa Brewer & Dean Martin who will even sing us an encore classic. A classic Harold Peary Gildersleeve from the period just before we started here in Volume One. Fear not we'll return to the Willard Waterman Christmas season of shows, not skipping any, starting in late November. Now let's enjoy figuring out just Where Is Peevy?

The biggest names in Hollywood and Broadway recorded for AFRS during the war years, The American Forces Network can trace its origins back to May 26, 1942, when the War Department established the Armed Forces Radio Service (AFRS). The U.S. Army began broadcasting from London during World War II, using equipment and studio facilities borrowed from the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC). The first transmission to U.S. troops began at 5:45 p.m. on July 4, 1943, and included less than five hours of recorded shows, a BBC news and sports broadcast. That day, Corporal Syl Binkin became the first U.S. Military broadcasters heard over the air. The signal was sent from London via telephone lines to five regional transmitters to reach U.S. troops in the United Kingdom as they prepared for the inevitable invasion of Nazi-occupied Europe. Fearing competition for civilian audiences the BBC initially tried to impose restrictions on AFN broadcasts within Britain (transmissions were only allowed from American Bases outside London and were limited to 50 watts of transmission power) and a minimum quota of British produced programming had to be carried. Nevertheless AFN programmes were widely enjoyed by the British civilian listeners who could receive them and once AFN operations transferred to continental Europe (shortly after D-Day) AFN were able to broadcast with little restriction with programmes available to civilian audiences across most of Europe (including Britain) after dark. As D-Day approached, the network joined with the BBC and the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation to develop programs especially for the Allied Expeditionary Forces. Mobile stations, complete with personnel, broadcasting equipment, and a record library were deployed to broadcast music and news to troops in the field. The mobile stations reported on front line activities and fed the news reports back to studio locations in London. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Entertainment Radio Stations Live 24/7 Sherlock Holmes/CBS Radio Mystery Theater https://live365.com/station/Sherlock-Holmes-Classic-Radio--a91441 https://live365.com/station/CBS-Radio-Mystery-Theater-a57491 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------

The fantastic voice of Kay Starr starts us off with: Rock and Roll Waltz(1954), Changing Partners(1954) and Wabash Cannon Ball(1948). The Three Kays with The Cuckoo. A popular English group in the 1950s. Cuckoo is probably a description of a lot of the rest of the content of the show. Albert Burdon with Albert before the means test(1931). I do quite like it. There are genuine gags and its quite subversive. The Street Singer with Trouble in paradise. Arthur Tracey was born Abba Avrom Tracovutsky in Ukraine in 1899. He originally used the name The Street Singer to avoid being banned from Vaudeville for appearing on the radio under his own name. Suzette Tarri performs The Boarding House. She was, what we'd call now, an observational comedian. Had a long career from the 1920s to 50s. Surely record of the week: Jack Hodges, the Raspberry King  with Everything is fresh today. Eat more fruit he says, blowing raspberries! Thirteen Woman from Billy Haley. A sexiest dream. Who knew the dropping of an H bomb could be so positive. Bizarre. Victor Theremin was born Lev Therman in St Peterburgh in 1996 and was the inventor of the first commercially produced electronic instrument- The Theremin. He was also involved in espionage. Working with the notorious Soviet  NKVD developing listening devices. The Theremin has been used in such films as Spellbound, The Day the Earth stood still and Hellboy. Next a 1916 version of Another little drink. Miss Louie Brooks, Jack Henty( the prolific Ernest Pike) and Charlie Collins. Charlie Collins was a songwriter of this era and earlier. Indeed it wrote some of the best known songs from the golden age of the British music halls- Dont dilly dally on the way, Boiled beef and carrots and Any old Iron? I can find no record of him performing though. Surely this is the same man? We finish with the Canadian born W V Robinson and Freaks of the mouth organ from 1926. Utter nonsense!!
