Riding the trend of YA dystopian adaptations and with the power of Peter Jackson behind it, Christian Rivers' big budget steampunk extravaganza was poised to crush the competition when it hit theaters in 2018. But this engine stalled badly, racking up an embarrassing box office take and crashing the hopes of a fresh new sci fi franchise. Join Sebastian and Steve as they steamroll through the good, the bad, and the bonkers of the maligned and overlooked Mortal Engines.

10 years ago my wife and I got married in a small, intimate ceremony at a local hotel and today we celebrated a decade married by packing the kids off to school and going to play crazy golf, so yeah, that's a realistic portrayal of what marriage looks like for the uninitiated. I  bring this up because it's late and I'm drunk and I don't have an interesting, funny or relevant way to introduce this weeks Top 5, which was the Top 5 Box Office Bombs. Not the explosive kind, more the kind that lose hideous amounts of money and ruin reputations and careers for ever. If you haven't stayed abreast of the net losses of movies over the years - and let's face it if you haven't you're a moron - you might find some of the movies we mention a surprise. This weeks movie was Christian Rivers's 2018 MORTAL ENGINES, a film I was completely  unaware existed until just a couple of weeks ago. Based upon the YA novel of the same name by Phillip Reeve and produced by the visionary Peter Jackson, Hera Hilmar plays the vengeful Hester Shaw on the trail of Hugo Weaving's Thaddeus Valentine, who has a plan to eradicate so called static cities in pursuit of Municipal Darwinism. An extraordinary visual treat with more than a few nods and winks to cultural juggernauts like Star Wars and Lord Of The Rings, not all of the dads were enamored with this box office flop so proceed with caution. We finish up this weeks show with a look back at BOB THE BUILDER in a specially selected episode titled "Wallpaper Wendy". Expect many jokes about wallpaper paste and bukakke parties but also surprisingly raw and honest emotional confessions of DIY anxiety and ineptitude. This particular episode was selected on the grounds of it's huge controversy; Bob apparently raping and killing several members of his local community. No, I jest of course but there was some genuine issues with this episode with allegations of swearing directed at the tax dodging building contractor. We love to hear from our listeners! By which I mean we tolerate it. Try us on twitter @dads_film, on Facebook Bad Dads Film Review or on our website baddadsfilm.com.Until next time, we remain...Bad Dads

In 2001, author Philip Reeve published "Mortal Engines," the first in a series of YA books about a post-apocalyptic world where survivors now live in large, warring, mobile "traction cities." In 2009, acclaimed filmmaker Peter Jackson purchased the rights to the series, intrigued by the story's cinematic potential. In 2016, production on the film began, under the guidance of first-time director and Jackson protégé Christian Rivers. In 2018, the film was released, into a crowded and highly competitive holiday movie season. And by 2019, the film was almost completely forgotten.  But WE remembered...and now we're here to try to figure out what the hell went wrong. This week we took a look at the film Mortal Engines (2018). Mortal Engines is based on the book written by Philip Reeves and despite not doing that well at the box office is a great movie. Directed by Christian Rivers and produced by by Peter Jackson and Frans Walsh its filmed fantastically. Attention to detail is second to none but the movie does have a few issues. Listen on to hear our take on the film. if you want to get in touch then please contact us on backtothefilm20@gmail.com

Unfortunately we've got a bit of a downgrade this week as we talk about Mortal Engines for our month of Hugo Weaving. There are things to like here, the setting being the chief among them. It's an interesting world with some equally interesting lore, and it all looks absolutely gorgeous. Where the film loses us is with everything else. The plot is bland and at times nonsensical, and no one is giving much in the way of their performance. Hugo Weaving has almost nothing to work with here with his first draft villain Valentine, and line reads that should play with gravitas just fall flat. The leads have no chemistry, which makes the eventual "falling in love" that's required of all YA feel like it comes out of left field. We discuss plenty more about it, but you'll have to listen to find out what we say.

Movie Review! Mortal EnginesMortal Engines is a young-adult science fantasy novel by Philip Reeve, published by Scholastic UK in 2001. The book focuses on a futuristic, steampunk version of London, now a giant machine striving to survive on a world running out of resources.Mortal Engines is a 2018 post-apocalyptic action adventure film directed by Christian Rivers and with a screenplay by Fran Walsh, Philippa Boyens, and Peter Jackson, based on the novel of the same name by Philip Reeve, and starring Hera Hilmar, Robert Sheehan, Hugo Weaving, Jihae, Ronan Raftery, Leila George, Patrick Malahide, and Stephen Lang. A world driven by Municipal Darwinism and the past is conveniently forgotten.   Yes, this week, we look at Philip Reeve's 2001 novel Mortal Engines and Christian Rivers (yes we know its really Peter Jacksons) oh so disappointing 2018 big screen adaptation.   But which is better; The book or the movie?   On a side note, we are currently locked down like so many of you, so the sound is not perfect here as we are learning about remote recording. So please bare with us, you may need to listen up at times. We are working towards sorting this issue out.   Stay home and stay safe everybody.   Lee & Steve x

Hold onto your Old Tech because Brenna and Joe are on the run from London and the other Traction Cities as they tackle Phillip Reeves' 2001 novel Mortal Engines, as well as 2018's significantly less interesting film adaptation by Christian Rivers. The text has fascinating colonialist and caste implications that are mostly abandoned in the film, in favour of pretty CW-styled actors and a really bad hairpiece by Hugo Weaving's villain. Come for the discussion about the impressive visual rendering of Municipal Darwinism and stay for Joe's invention of a brand new Harry Potter pre-quel franchise. It's not often you get to meet the director of one of your favorite films of all time, and it's equally as gratifying to discover that they are exactly as you imagined. Peter Jackson is a man who needs little to no introduction being the master world builder that he is and the visionary filmmaker behind the "Lord of the Rings" Trilogy. He also has managed to place himself at the forefront of cutting-edge technological filmmaking innovations such as his founding of special and visual effects company WETA, his work with performance capture, and his recent plunge into Augmented Reality Storytelling to name a few. Acting as the Producer and Co-Writer on the latest big-budget fantasy film 'Mortal Engines,' the rights to which Jackson originally purchased back in 2009, the filmmaker had the delightful privilege of watching one of his young prodigies, director Christian Rivers, tackle his first feature film - something Jackson proudly discussed in our interview. “Mortal Engines” depicts a post-apocalyptic, steampunk version of our world where once great cities now operate as giant predator machines on wheels. Narrowing in on London, the story focuses on a mysterious young woman named Hester Shaw (Hera Hilmar) as she joins forces with a dangerous outlaw and an outcast to lead a rebellion against the evil Thaddeus Valentine (Hugo Weaving). We spoke with Jackson about his recent WWI Documentary, "They Shall Not Grow Old," which has been turning heads on the festival circuit, along with his involvement in Amazon's 'Lord of the Rings' series, an update on 'Tintin 2' and where he sees the future of AR Storytelling. "Mortal Engines" is directed by Christian Rivers and hits theaters December 14th, 2018. Be sure to catch our previous interview with the villain of "Mortal Engines", Hugo Weaving and stay tuned for our conversation with the film's composer, Junkie XL. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/theplaylist/message

Mortal Engines is a new sci-fi fantasy film co-written and produced by Peter Jackson, based on the first in a series of young adult steampunk novels by Philip Reeve. This is one set of YA novels that had passed us by, but they didn’t pass by Peter Jackson, who handed it over to his long-time storyboarder and special effects guy Christian Rivers to direct. The plucky heroine of this series is Hester Shaw, a scarred young woman hell-bent on avenging her mother’s murder. She’s joined by a blue-eyed angel in the form of Robert Sheehan as Tom, and Anna Fang, played by K-Pop star Jihae, who is worth the price of admission alone.
