This week we kick off the first ever No Tags film season! Based on an original idea by DJ and NTS host Finn, Big Beat Cinema is our attempt to identify and decode a much-loved and entirely made-up micro-genre.We begin by outlining the core canon and basic tropes of BBC, paying particular attention to the ultra-stylish heist movies of the late ‘90s and early ‘00s – think Ocean's Eleven, Mark Wahlberg's The Italian Job, Snatch and even The Matrix. We also try to explain why big beat – the sample-flipping, chart-dominating, Hawaiian shirt-wearing sound of the millennium – became so integral to these movies' portrayal of cool guys pulling off implausible heists. From zany editing to Junkie XL, from Paul Oakenfold to the politics of cool, and from Skint Records to the correct shade of denim, this first episode lays out the core principles of BBC.Let us know what you think in the comments – including on our Letterboxd list, where you can check out the full selection of BBC contenders, from Shallow Grave to Kneecap. Rev up your engines for the second week in a row, as we journey back to completely deranged post-apocalyptic Straya for George Miller's long-awaited Fury Road prequel all about Furiosa. The film has been in development since before Fury Road was even filmed over a decade ago, and tells the saga of the titular character's backstory prior to her time with Tom Hardy's Mad Max. Anya Taylor-Joy takes on the mantle of a young Furiosa, and does so very capably with a supporting cast lead by Chris Hemsworth playing a bogan wasteland cult leader. How entertaining we found Hemsworth's unconventional performance is just the first of many points we found disagreements with in this review. We'll debate the trademark action sequences, cinematography, Junkie XL's score, and much more. All before we discuss other top examples of actors taking on a role outside of their usual range. Welcome to the Living for the Max series.  Over the past 45 years, there has been no other film franchise QUITE as inventive nor as consistently exciting as The Mad Max Saga….four films mostly chronicling the post-apocalyptic adventures of lone wolf Max Roxatansky played three times by Mel Gibson and most recently by Tom Hardy.  As each film has been directed by Australian cinematic genius George Miller, they have each reflected his unique vision while also being HUGELY influential on pop culture, more specifically the action genre.  So needless to say, new ones don't come around very often and when they do….it MORE than qualifies as a cinematic EVENT.  Therefore over the next several months, I will be revisiting EACH entry of this beloved franchise every month leading up to the U.S. release of Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga on May 24!  Well the time has come, the latest installment of this beloved franchise has finally arrived nine years after the previous one.  Once again directed by George Miller but this time starring Anya Taylor-Joy (playing a younger version of the title role, taking over from Charlize Theron in the last one) and Chris Hemsworth as a new villain, the demented....Dementus. ;) This time around, we are being told the origin story of Furiosa kicking off with her earlier years as a young girl (Alayla Brown) living in the "Green Place" who is then kidnapped by some marauders who report to Dementus - she also sadly loses her brave mother (Charlee Fraser) in the process as well.   And what results is an epic revenge tale set once again in the post-apocalyptic Wasteland of Australia. where we also revisit settings and characters from previous entries.  Let's find out if one of the most highly anticipated franchise films of recent years lives up to the hype....Host & Editor: Geoff GershonProducer: Marlene Gershon Send us a Text Message.https://livingforthecinema.com/Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/Living-for-the-Cinema-Podcast-101167838847578Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/livingforthecinema/Letterboxd:https://letterboxd.com/Living4Cinema/

Blockbuster film composer Tom Holkenborg — aka Junkie XL — returns to George Miller's post-apocalyptic dystopian world with his latest installment, “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga.” Regular guest host Jon Burlingame joins the podcast to discuss Holkenborg's hands-on approach to crafting the music for this film, which included an unusual addition to his typical job of composer.“To find the right language for this film from a first-person perspective… I was able to be one of the re-recording mixers on this film, being responsible to mix the final results of the film that now people will hear in the theater, alongside [re-recording mixer] Rob Mackenzie. I don't know a film that has been mixed by a composer… at least in the years that I've been working in the film industry. To be able to take this on with George [Miller] and with Rob Mackenzie was just an amazing eight-week experience, to really get into the complete details. It's like, ‘how do you want the music to sound? How is it going to be spaced in an incredible Dolby Atmos theater? And how are you using all the speakers? How much do you push the music? And how do you create perfect handoffs with the sound design, working in conjunction together?' It was such a fascinating experience.”—Tom Holkenborg, Composer and Re-recording Mixer, “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga”Be sure to check out “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga,” now playing in Dolby Cinemas®, in Dolby Vision® and Dolby Atmos®.Please subscribe to Dolby Creator Talks wherever you get your podcasts. You can also check out the video for this episode.Learn more about the Dolby Institute and check out Dolby.com. Zo hebben we The Fall Guy, Kong X Godzilla en The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare gezien.

Today's guest changed the trajectory of my life forever. When I was just 11 years old, I heard the song Xpander by Sasha for the first time. That EP opened me up to the world of electronic dance music which would change my career and my life for the next sixteen years and beyond. From that moment forward nobody ever saw me without wearing a pair of headphones, without my trusty little Sony Walkman, listening to all of these albums – Global Underground, Airdrawndagger—all of this deep house music from around the world. I didn't know it at the time but the creator of this and many other world-changing electronic records was Charlie May, ghost producer extraordinaire. Over the years he's made pivotal tracks with Sasha, Spooky, Junkie XL, and a who's-who of top underground artists for the last several decades. You might not know his name but that's exactly the point. You should. His works have shaped the current electronic scene, taking us from a time when DJs were uncelebrated and underpaid weirdos in the corner of a room to this massive celebrity industry that we see today. This week all the music in this episode is an original creation of Charlie May—I would strongly encourage you to check out Charlie's Bandcamp for more of his work. ➡️ https://charliemay.bandcamp.com/ ➡️ Highlights: https://rosspalmer.com/charlie-may

On the newest (and spookiest) episode of Comics and Chronic the guys discuss the Marvel Special Presentation Werewolf By Night from director Michael Giacchino. But first what kind of pimp shit has Jake been up to? Why do Cody and Jake refuse to move back to NY? Will Cody take over comedy in LA once an earthquake hits and floods everything? Do we prefer vampires or werewolves? Is An American Werwolf in Paris better than An American Werewolf in London? Would we fuck the alien from Species? What's the deal with the Bloodstone? Is this special a breath of fresh air for Marvel or the same formulaic bullshit? Did we like the use of black and white and practical effects? Did we think this special was scary? What is the director's resume? How does his composing compare to the combo of Hans Zimmer and Junkie XL? What's Cody's beef with the show? What do we think of the new characters Jack Russell, Elsa Bloodstone, and Man Thing? Should Werewolf by Night fight more like a werewolf? Should Marvel women fight differently? Could Elsa Bloodstone take Black Widow in a fight? Were the deaths cool? Why is David Bowie hunting monsters? Was the main villain stepmom the weakest part of the special? What did Anthony think of the movie Licorice Pizza? Other than Rocket Raccoon what other comic book roles would Bradley Cooper be good for? Could he be Lex Luthor or Green Lantern Hal Jordan in the DC universe? Could he play someone on the X-Men? Could anyone play Mr. Fantastic in a movie? Should Kevin Feige cast Cody as Mr. Fantastic Reed Richards in the new Fantastic Four MCU movie? Is Werewolf By Night stronger because of its runtime? Is this one hour of television better than most of Phase 4? Is this the TV equivalent of a comic book one-shot? Was it better than She Hulk? Has we ever read any Werewolf by Night comics? Were we expecting this special to link to Blade or Black Knight? Should Moon Knight have been a special presentation? Do we want to see more of these characters in future MCU projects? Has Phase 4 been lackluster? What projects from Marvel Phase 4 would we keep? Would Jake do better as Oscar Isaac as Moon Knight? Why is Michael Imperioli so depressed in all his pictures? How does this compare to the 2021 Mortal Kombat movie? Who is the true villain of MCU phase 4? Is toxic motherhood destroying the whole MCU? What's going on with the Blade movie and why was it delayed? Was Thor: Love and Thunder the worst thing about Phase 4 and the MCU in general? Are we done with Thor movies? Should Thor and Loki have their own show together? Should Taika Waititi be banned from making another Marvel movie? What was spookier - Werewolf by Night or Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness? What are our Halloween plans? What costumes have we worn in the past? Is Mephisto still lurking behind the scenes? Check out our website: https://www.comicsandchronic.com/ New episodes every THURSDAY Follow us on social media! Zack Snyder's Justice League This time, we're taking a special look at Zach Snyder's Justice League and along the way we ask, could Ben Affleck have been the best onscreen Batman, exactly how much of the film is in slow motion and is there a future for the DC Extended Universe? Let's dive in… Cast & Crew Directed by Zack Snyder: After previously directed Man of Steel and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, Snyder took on the humongous task of putting his touch on the DC Extended Universe by directing Justice League. However, during production, Snyder's daughter, Autumn, committed suicide and Snyder along with his wife and producer, Deborah, left the film and Joss Whedon was hired to take over the director duties. Whedon would ultimately wind up rewriting the majority of the film and reshooting close to 80% of the material Snyder had previously shot for the film.  The cast from the Whedon Cut of Justice League remained unchanged but here's a quick rundown: Ben Affleck as Bruce Wayne/Batman Gal Gadot as Diana Prince/Wonder Woman Jason Momoa as Arthur Curry/Aquaman Ezra Miller as Barry Allen/The Flash Ray Fisher as Victor Stone/Cyborg Henry Cavill as Clark Kent/Superman Ciaran Hinds as Steppenwolf Jeremy Irons as Alfred Pennyworth J.K. Simmons as Commission Jim Gordon Joe Morton as Dr. Silas Stone There are also some newer additions in keeping with the continuity of the previous films: Willem Dafoe as Vulko Jared Leto as The Joker Harry Lennix as Calvin Swanwick/The Martian Manhunter Jesse Eisenberg as Lex Luthor Joe Mangianello as Slade Wilson/Deathstroke These two actors had previously appeared in the original Justice League but their scene was completely reworked for the new edition Aftermath of the Justice League Following the release of Justice League in 2017; the film became a massive critical and commercial flop due to Whedon's rewrites, reshoots and bloated budget of nearly 300 million. Estimates vary on the budget but Warner Brothers had projected that the film had to make over $675 million for the film to become profitable. However, due in part to the critical reception and the lack of major marketing (40% on Rotten Tomatoes and 45% on Metacritic), Justice League only managed to gross $658 million and ultimately cost Warner Brothers $60 million. Due to Justice League flopping, it put the future of the DC Extended Universe in jeopardy even with the success of films like Wonder Woman, Shazam, Aquaman and Joker bolstering the concept of the shared universe of DC heroes. Even actors in the film expressed disappointment such as Ciaran Hinds who publicly decried his character's depiction in the film noting it was drastically different from what was originally imagined. Other actors like Gal Gadot and Jason Momoa also expressed their disappointment in Whedon's decisions in his new cut. Almost immediately following the bomb of Justice League, a fan movement was born on social media and could summed up with a simple hashtag, #ReleasetheSnyderCut and took off from there. It can't be stated enough just how the original Justice League threw off the trajectory of the entire series with directors Patty Jenkins and James Wan basing their films off of what Zack Snyder was working on with his cut of the film. Deborah Snyder, who was one of the main driving forces for the films, left the project along with her husband, ultimately crippling the series. Following the growing fan movement and building for over two and a half years, Warner Brothers announced in May 2020 that Zack Snyder would return to release his original vision for the film. He was given $70 million in additional funds to reshoot scenes with the original cast returning, update the visual effects and finish the film score from Hans Zimmer and Junkie XL.  Major Changes from Joss to Zack After viewing the film in its four hour entirety,

057: Emily RiceGood morning! This is Play It Like It’s Music. I’m Trevor, thanks for listening. On Wednesday, the 23rd of September of 2020 Music is not content. It’s connection.Hell of week we’re having, right? Let’s make it better.Emily Rice is a British born composer for film and TV, who started her musical life as a cellist playing in orchestras and rock bands. She has recorded and conducted her work at Warner Brothers, Capitol Records and The Wiltern – with members of the Hollywood Chamber Orchestra. She is stacking up credits, busy as hell and I’m very grateful that she made the time to speak with us. I became a fan when I saw the popular online film Mr. Malcolm’s List and I’ve been spotting her all over the place ever since. She recently scored the Netflix series The I-Land as well as the documentaries 100 Years From Home, Self-Taught and For The Love Of Rutland, as well as narrative feature Miss Juneteenth which premiered at the 2020 Sundance Film Festival. (You should all watch that one on Amazon, it’s great.)Recognized as an emerging talent early on in her career, Emily was the first composer to be awarded a scholarship from BAFTA Los Angeles. She holds a Bachelor’s degree in Music from the University of York, a graduate certificate in film scoring from USC, and is also an alumna of the prestigious Sundance Institute Film Music & Sound Design Lab. She spent some time early on assisting several elite film composers including Brian Tyler, James Newton Howard and Laura Karpman, and was a writing assistant to Junkie XL. She has contributed music to Hollywood blockbusters such as Tomb Raider and Alita: Battle Angel and done orchestrations for The Mummy, Altered Carbon and Star Trek: Discovery. So yeah, big time! I’m psyched to bring her on the show, we’re going to hear some of her story and of course we got off on the good foot talking about what else.. the cello. That thing has its own language. It’s an honor to have her here, so without further ado, meet Emily Rice.Press PLAY above to ear my conversation with Emily RiceOr subscribe in your podcast app: Apple Podcasts - Spotify- Stitcher - TuneIn - Overcast - PocketcastThanks for listening to Play It Like It’s Music. EMILY RICE is a British born composer for film and TV, who started her musical life as a cellist playing in orchestras and rock bands. Rice has previously served as assistant to several elite film composers including Brian Tyler, James Newton Howard and Laura Karpman, and was a writing assistant to Junkie XL. Her music can be heard in Hollywood blockbusters such as Tomb Raider and Alita: Battle Angel, and she has garnered several orchestration credits including The Mummy, Altered Carbon and Star Trek: Discovery. Rice recently completed scoring her first TV show, for the Netflix series The I-Land, which will be was released September 12, 2019. The I-Land is an American science fiction thriller web television miniseries created by Anthony Salter. The series stars Kate Bosworth and in the show, ten people wake up on the beach of what appears to be a deserted tropical island. None of them have any memory of who they are or how they got there, and each takes on the name that is printed on their clothes tags. They set off on a trek to try to get back home, only to discover the world is not as it seems. In this episode, Emily Rice talks about having her score for The I-Land walk a delicate balance somewhere between music and sound design. She reveals how she crafted her score to touch on the various elements of the series: the humans, the mysterious, and the sci-fi. Rice also reveals how an old song from "Bonnie & Clyde" becomes one of the many heavily processed sources in her original work.ANNOTATED TRACKS / SEGMENTS02:07 - The Raft06:09 - The Storm07:49 - The I-Land Pays You Back09:12 - The Burial11:22 - KC's Trauma & Crime15:45 - Taylor I-Land No ChickensSOUNDTRACKThe original score for THE I-LAND is not currently available for purchase.
