Ever wondered about the peculiar Christmas traditions that have become an integral part of your holiday celebrations, or the historical intricacies of the Gospel of Luke? If so, buckle up for an enlightening discussion where we decode these traditions, starting from the peculiar Christmas Pickle to Krampus Night. We also embark on an explorative journey through the first two chapters of Luke's gospel in our Advent series, "Christmas according to Luke", where we aim to provide a detailed understanding of Luke's writings, bringing about a sense of personal renewal and fresh perspective this Christmas season. As we navigate through the Gospel of Luke, we're not shying away from hard-hitting questions about its authenticity, comparing the New Testament with other religious texts, and addressing your queries about the historical truth of Jesus' story. We're going to dissect the concept of textual criticism and its role in determining the reliability of historical documents. Luke's investigative approach, despite his lack of personal interaction with Jesus, sets the stage for a dynamic and enriching dialogue about faith and history. Our exploration doesn't stop there. We'll be comparing the historical narratives and timelines of Christianity, Islam, and Judaism. It's compelling to realize how these faiths weave themselves into history through archaeological findings and external evidence. The meticulous preservation of the Bible, especially when contrasted with other faiths, demonstrates the robust historical foundation of Christianity. Join us in this journey as we unpack this rich heritage and delve into the timeless relevance of Luke's Gospel in our lives today.Support the show

Episode 25? That's a quarter century... hard to believe. This episode we focus on the wonderful tradition of the Christmas Pickle.First up we discuss the history of the tradition, does it date back as far as the days of the real St Nicholas, is it from the American civil war or was it just the clever idea of some marketing executive who had too many pickle ornaments left over? Who knows? Not me, I'll tell you that for nothing.Next up we listen to some of the 'wonderful' songs about Christmas Pickles. In this special Christmas Eve episode, Matt and Eric share their Christmas traditions and tackle two big Christmas questions: what's the best way to decorate a tree? And should it be a real tree or a fake tree?
Join us for a super-sized Deep Dive episode of vintage Christmas stories, traditions, and holiday fun! This episode was born when we wanted to find out more about the iconic silver aluminum Christmas trees of the 1950s and 60s and that took us on a wild ride! We talk about Christmas decor trends from the 1920s through the 1970s, as well as share anecdotes from family and friends. Rachel gets her burning questions answered, such as: What is a flocked Christmas tree? And Debra learns the history of the Christmas Pickle ornament. Pour yourself a cup of hot cocoa....or something a little stronger from your bar cart....and enjoy this special episode!
One of the biggest complaints that I hear from parents, and I’ve heard it for a long time, is that Christmas morning is over in a blink of an eye. We build up all this anticipation and put so much thought into everything that happens that morning. Can you picture yours? What does it look like and feel like? Does it go by so quickly that you feel you’ve been gypped on time? Maybe it seems like a Christmas tornado went through your house. Even though kids are just being kids, you might even feel a bit let down. There are a few things we do to end Christmas morning feeling like it was a complete success. We started them early on, but I believe you could implement them this year, no matter the age of your children. One of the greatest successes to our morning is starting the day with cake, usually chocolate cake. Yup, cake for breakfast! In our home we celebrate the birth of Christ and what’s a birthday celebration without cake? Before any gifts are open we cut the cake and enjoy a piece. Even if you do not celebrate the birth of Christ, Christmas is a time of celebration, so why not enjoy cake? It helps slow the morning down. Another fun part of our morning that adds to our success is how we “do” gifts. Generally our kids get only 3 gifts. When they were little it was so easy. They received something just for fun, something to read and something to wear. We do still keep it to three gifts, but we can’t keep the same parameters as we once did. Our girls also buy for each other. When they were little they would buy something small for each sister, but as they have gotten older that stopped working as well and we transitioned to picking a name out of a hat. They love surprising a sister with a gift. But here’s where the magic comes in, only one gift is opened at a time. Everyone watches and waits. We have time to enjoy the moment with the receiver of the gift. We have added in a fun tradition of the Christmas Pickle. I believe it is a German tradition and it adds to the fun of the morning. We hide this pickle ornament in the tree and whoever finds it gets to open the first gift of Christmas. You could use any ornament and start this fun tradition this year. Lighting a candle each Sunday, opening a "door" every morning, and putting a shoe in front of your door on December 5th? These are some of many many German Christmas traditions that we talk about in this episode. And, of course, we talk about how Christmas is celebrated differently in the US where you'll see Santa Claus at the mall, stockings on the fireplace, and fake Christmas trees popping up everywhere as early as November. Grab some tea, eggnog, or Glühwein, and dive into the wonderful world of Christmas with us. :) ++We’d like to apologize for the echo that you can hear on the recording in some parts, we hope it doesn’t bother you too much while listening. Also, Feli got some of the dates wrong in this episode: Of course, Heilige Drei Könige is on January 6th (not Dec 6th) and the second Christmas Day is on December 26th (not 24th).++ 0:00 Intro | 8:55 Advent time in Germany | 17:32 Christmas Decorations | 26:45 Advent calendars | 31:32 Christmas songs | 34:51 The Christmas Pickle | 35:58 St. Nikolaus & Krampus/Knecht Ruprecht | 45:30 Who brings the presents? Giving a bad Christmas gift and making a song about putting up Christmas lights... This is a recap of the CJ & Joy Show on WAY-FM.
Here on Christmas Past, I dig in to the backstories behind Christmas traditions. But what happens when you can’t even verify that the thing you’re researching even is a tradition? That’s what happened when I started looking into the Christmas Pickle. You’ve probably seen pickle tree ornaments, or maybe seen posts about them in your social media feeds. The story goes that it’s an old German tradition. But…the more you dig in, the more you have to wonder. Well, luckily someone else has done the heavy lifting. A trained journalist, no less. Richard Parks III is the host of Richard’s famous food podcast. And last year he dedicated an episode to his investigation of the topic. So join me, Tim Babb from Can't Wait for Christmas and Craig Kringle from Weird Christmas as we explore, theorize, and generally goof around discussing the strange and mysterious phenomenon of the Christmas Pickle. Seasons Greetings! This episode, we discuss Cami's theories on the existence of Santa. Tabby shows up to help us reminisce on past traditions. We contemplate the virtues of egg nog. We try to figure out if Marzipan is a flavor. There is some griping about opening pajamas as Christmas gifts. Advent calendars are good. Matching Christmas outfits are bad. We say what everyone else is afraid to: "Company Christmas parties are lame." Tabby reminds me that I'm a hipster because I don't understand alcohol. The girls make peanut butter and jelly sound like fine cuisine. I'm introduced to the concept of "Christmas Pickle" and it confuses me. We wrap up with a few minutes from our Facebook LIVE broadcast. Our Facebook group sets themselves to the task of naming Luke's new business.
