For the first time in it's history, no dogs were surrendered to Clare's dog shelter over the Christmas period. It's the only occasion the local pound hasn't had to offer emergency accommodation to pets for the festive period since it's opening in 1986. It follows extensive efforts from shelter staff and Clare's County Dog Warden. Frankie Coote says they're delighted with the result.

I want to begin today somewhere very honest.I haven't really felt Christmas this year.And that feels almost rebellious to admit out loud.Our home looks beautiful. We styled it gently, intentionally, like a little Nordic cottage tucked away from the noise. Soft lights. Natural textures. Calm corners. From the outside, it looks like I've fully stepped into the season. But inside, something hasn't quite landed.I didn't go to the Christmas tree light switch-on. I didn't wander around London wrapped in scarves pretending to feel festive. No Christmas afternoon tea. No Winter Wonderland.I didn't even do our usual festive hot drink ritual or sit in a cinema watching a Christmas film, hoping this would be the moment it all clicked.It didn't. And instead of forcing myself into the spirit of it, I let that be true.Because here's what I noticed instead: Christmas has been showing up for me in much quieter ways this year. In the softness of being at home. In early evenings when the lights are low, and the world feels muted. In moments of stillness that feel more honest than any tinsel-covered outing ever could.There have been small pockets of cosiness I've genuinely enjoyed. Not performative. Not curated for memory-making. Just real. A warm room. A familiar silence. A sense of not needing to be anywhere else.And maybe that's what this season needed from me. Not excitement. Not tradition. Not effort. Just presence. Christmas hasn't felt like a celebration this year. It's felt like a holding space. And I think… I needed that more. And it's from that place that I want to talk about something that's coming next. Something quieter. Something rarely named properly.The space between Christmas and New Year. That strange, tender in-between that begins once the day itself has passed. The Danes call it Romjul. Not a holiday. Not a celebration. But a pause. A sacred exhale.Romjul doesn't officially arrive until after Christmas, but I can already feel its invitation. That loosening of expectations. That softening of pace. That sense that, soon, nothing will be required of us for a few precious days.Because once Christmas Day is over, the meals are eaten, the conversations have happened, and the energy shifts. The noise drops away. And suddenly, you're left alone with yourself.Not in a lonely way. In a truthful way. Romjul doesn't ask you to feel joyful or grateful or inspired. It doesn't demand plans or resolutions or reinvention. It simply creates space.And I know, when those days arrive, there will be a moment, probably a quiet afternoon between the 27th and New Year's Eve, when I'll find myself sitting somewhere familiar, wrapped in something soft, noticing what's been stirring beneath the surface.Because even now, I already know something to be true: I'm not rushing into my best year yet. And that surprises me. Because everywhere you look, someone is shouting about your best year ever. New goals. New body. New habits. New version of you.But here's the thing. I'm not broken. I don't need fixing. And I don't want to sprint into January pretending I'm somewhere I'm not. This season, and the pause that follows it, is asking something different of me.It's asking: “Can you begin exactly where you are? I used to think beginnings had to be dramatic. A big decision. A clean slate. A bold declaration. But when I finally chose to begin exactly where I was, not where I wished I'd be, something softened inside me.Because where I am is… human. Some days I feel clear and grounded and quietly powerful. Other days, I feel tender, uncertain, slower than I used to be. And instead of seeing that as a problem, this in-between season has been whispering: “This is the work.”Midlife has a way of placing you in what I call the messy middle. That space where you're no longer who you were, but not quite who you're becoming. And for a long time, I tried to rush through that middle. Label it. Fix it. Resolve it.But this year, as the year itself begins to soften, I'm realising something I hadn't fully let land before: The messy middle is worth celebrating. Because it means you're alive to your life. It means you're listening. It means you haven't numbed yourself just to get through.There's wisdom here. And grief. And truth. And if you let it, there's relief.I can already feel how much my body is asking for gentleness. Not in a burnt-out way. But in a “Please, stop pushing me” way. I can feel how my nervous system wants quiet, not grand plans. How my heart wants honesty, not hype.And that's how I know why I want 2026 to feel different. Not bigger. Not louder. Not more impressive. But truer. I don't want to perform my life anymore. I want to inhabit it. I want mornings that unfold slowly when they can. Work that feels aligned, not urgent. A body that's supported, not judged. A calendar that leaves space to breathe. Romjul won't ask me to decide anything. It will simply ask me to notice. What feels heavy? What feels finished. What feels quietly ready to change.And maybe the bravest thing you can do right now, on Christmas Eve, isn't to plan your next chapter… But to allow the pause that's coming to do its quiet work.So if you're listening to this today, with decorations still up and emotions still tender, let me say this to you: You're not behind. You're not late. You're not failing. You're approaching a pause.And pauses are powerful. They're where truth catches up with us. They're where the body speaks. Outdoor Christmas decorations didn't fly at U.S. Air Force base housing in the Florida Panhandle before Thanksgiving. The private company that operates a community of homes near Tyndall Air Force Base (AFB) instructed residents to remove their Yuletide decorations and refrain from putting them back up until after Turkey Day. “All holiday decorations should be reflective in their respective months and not any sooner than 30 days before the given holiday,” the landlord said in the message. Air Force Capt. Justin Davidson-Beebe, a Tyndall spokesman, said that the landlord, Balfour Beatty Communities, had set the policy. “They are enforcing the community standards outlined in the legally binding lease agreement all residents voluntarily sign,” Davidson-Beebe said in an email. “These guidelines are not part of a broader Air Force policy. Since community standards are set by the privatized housing management company at some installations, standards may vary from base to base.” The 59-page community handbook for Tyndall AFB Homes explicitly states that winter decorations and lights are only allowed from the week after Thanksgiving through New Year's Day, and that lights can only be lit from 6 p.m. to 11 p.m. “Do not keep them lit all night or in daylight hours,” the handbook says. “They must be removed no later than the third week of January; they may not remain on the exterior year-round.” In a statement, Balfour Beatty Communities said the company was just offering guidelines and there would be no enforcement leading to any punishment. “Our holiday decoration guidelines are designed to provide a general framework to help maintain consistency in our communities,” the company said. “We value the joy and creativity our residents bring to their neighborhoods, especially during the holidays, and apologize for any confusion.” The base, located outside Panama City in Florida's Panhandle, is home to the 325th Fighter Wing. Send me a Text Message!Here's the deal. Jesus was born to die. The manger led to the cross and the cross was the ultimate blow-out love-burst of God. But we never would've known that without the resurrection. Before the resurrection, from our perspective the cross was nothing more than abounding despair, unmerciful judgement and victorious evil. The resurrection changed the cross from a symbol of deep despair to a symbol of ultimate hope. An ultimate hope that is built upon a deep, deep love. There's no Christmas without the resurrection. The world does not go into a global celebration for people who died so long ago. But Jesus still lives, and Jesus still loves, and so we celebrate.

Let's set the scene. It's December, 1946, and it's beginning to look a lot like a disappointing Christmas at the Fort Hamilton, NY military base. No Christmas tree, no decorations for eight-year-old Mom waiting to disembark with her two sisters and mother for Heidelberg, Germany where they will join their father, then serving as an Army intelligence officer. The only gift? A pair of mittens for each girl handknit by their grandmother, wrapped and waiting on the bedstand Christmas morning. The disappointment of a handknit gift is what Mom decides to share on our knitting podcast. Perhaps the Christmas miracle here is that both are true, and it takes a family to reconstruct the whole story. But that little detail changed the story for Mom and what it meant to her.
