The Murder Of Janet Abaroa AND David Crespi Murdered His Two Daughters - True Crime Documentary Janet Abaroa, 26, was brutally killed inside her house on the evening of April 26th, 2005, while her six-month-old son slept soundly in the next room. The brutal murder of a young mother stunned Durham and devastated her family and friends. Raven Abaroa, her worried husband, dialed 911 in a panic. Not long after her murder, he was the one who discovered her body. Raven and Janet were college sweethearts who married soon after graduation. On the surface, their relationship appeared to be great, but family and friends were concerned. Raven was caught embezzling from his work, which was the most surprising recent information leading up to Janet's death. Raven's knife collection was mysteriously missing from the house on the night of Janet's murder, and he stood to gain $500,000 from his wife's life insurance policy. Raven, on the other hand, had an alibi: he was at a soccer game in the evening. Janet was in bed watching TV when he departed, he said cops (her nightly routine). He had no idea that this minor detail would lead to a new finding in the case. The case remained unsolved for five years. Raven moved on with his life and married Vanessa Pond in Salt Lake City, Utah, with his kid. In 2013, Zwerling received the evidence package, which included dried contact lenses. The contact lenses rehydrated when he added a saline solution, demonstrating that they were in Janet's eyes at the time of her murder and after she was buried. While Raven maintains that he did not murder Janet, the rest of the world, including his second wife, believes he did.

Bringing historical seismic reports and modern seismic risk maps into alignment, and a roundup of stories from our newsletter, ScienceAdviser First on the show this week, a roundup of stories with our newsletter editor, Christie Wilcox. Wilcox talks with host Sarah Crespi about the oldest ice ever found, how well conservation efforts seem to be working, and repelling mosquitoes with our skin microbes. Next on this episode, evaluating seismic hazard maps. In a Science Advances paper this week, Leah Salditch, a geoscience peril adviser at risk and reinsurance company Guy Carpenter, compared modern seismic risk map predictions with descriptions of past quakes. The analysis found a mismatch: Reported shaking in the past tended to be stronger than modern models would have predicted. She talks with Crespi about where this bias comes from and how to fix it. Creek Pine Drive is an upmarket residential neighbourhood located in Charlotte, North Carolina. It boasts of large single-family homes dotted along a tree-lined avenue. It's the kind of place that most families can only ever dream of living, but for the Crespi family, it was a reality. However, a darkness was lurking within the family that would rear its ugly head after an episode of psychosis. The ensuing events cast a spotlight on the effectiveness of mental health services, raising crucial questions about the accurate diagnosis and the challenges faced by individuals seeking proper treatment.SPONSORS -4Patriots: Thank you to 4Patriots for sponsoring this episode! Brando Crespi has devoted decades to sustainable development as co-founder and Executive Chair at Pro Natura International and Global Biochar. His holistic approach to sustainable development could be called regenerative––instead of telling poor and exploited people what they should do, it's about recognizing and cultivating local leadership, helping them form a community vision for their future, providing the assistance necessary to achieve that vision, and then getting out of the way. Along the way, Crespi and his colleagues came across biochar, a substance made from burning bio waste (like sawdust and crop husks) and that has been used in the Amazon for millennia. As a soil amendment, biochar can bring dead soil back to life, improve crop yields, and decrease water use. It can also be used in industrial products and plastics. And its production can provide an energy source in communities looking to develop clean energy and regenerative agriculture.

On January 20, 2006, Kim Crespi came home to her beautiful house in Matthews, North Carolina after a hair appointment, only to be stopped by a police barricade. She was informed that her two, five-year-old twin daughters, Tess and Sammie, had been murdered, and her husband, David, had confessed and was in police custody. David, a man who had never outwardly shown any signs of violence or aggression. A man who, to his friends, co-workers, and family, seemed like a hard-working, loving, and happy person. Even more frightening than the reality that David had murdered two of his daughters, was the likelihood that David would have murdered his wife and remaining 3 children had they been home. What could have caused this husband and father to brutally kill his two twin girls? Was it a conscious choice he made or was it induced by his recent changes in medication prescribed for his depression and anxiety? What we learned from a seismometer on Mars, why it's so difficult to understand the relationship between our microbes and our brains, and the first in our series of books on the science of food and agriculture First up this week, freelance space journalist Jonathan O'Callaghan joins host Sarah Crespi to discuss the retirement of NASA's Mars InSight lander. After almost 4 years of measuring quakes on the surface of the Red Planet, the lander's solar panels are getting too dusty to continue providing power. O'Callaghan and Crespi look back at the insights that InSight has given us about Mars's interior, and they talk about where else in the Solar System it might make sense to place a seismometer. Also this week, we have a special issue on the body's microbiome beyond the gut. As part of the special issue, John Cryan, principal investigator at APC Microbiome Ireland, University College Cork, wrote a commentary piece on tightening the connections research has made between microbes and the brain—the steps needed to go from seeing connections to understanding how the microbiome might be tweaked to change what's happening in the brain. Finally this week, we have the first installment of our series of author interviews on the science of food and agriculture. In this inaugural segment, host and science journalist Angela Saini talks to Ousmane Badiane, an expert on agricultural policy and development in Africa, and a co-author of Food For All In Africa: Sustainable Intensification for African Farmers, a 2019 book looking at the possibilities and reality of sustainable intensive farming in Africa. This week's episode was produced with help from Podigy. This Week: A heartwarming story of youth activism out of West Contra Costa Unified School District has resulted in a name change to a local middle school. Say goodbye Juan Crespi Middle School, and hello Betty Reid Soskin Middle School. Crespi, a Franciscan missionary who helped lay the foundation of California's oppressive and genocidal mission system, will be replaced by Soskin, a community activist, named in 1995 California Woman of the Year by the state legislature, and currently the nation's oldest national park ranger. Feels good, don't it? Manuel and Jeff discuss not only this individual story of light in the darkness of the white supremacist mythology, but the wave of similar work being done across the country, and the urgent need to continue.
