The Breadwinner is a 2017 animated drama film from Irish animation studio Cartoon Saloon directed by Nora Twomey. Based on the best-selling novel by Deborah Ellis, the film was an international co-production between Canada, the Republic of Ireland and Luxembourg, and received a limited release on 17 November 2017.   The film had its world premiere at the 2017 Toronto International Film Festival in September. The Breadwinner received a nomination for Best Animated Feature at the 90th Academy Awards but lost to Coco.   The House with a Clock in Its Walls is a 2018 American fantasy comedy film directed by Eli Roth, based on the 1973 novel of the same name by John Bellairs. It stars Jack Black, Cate Blanchett, Owen Vaccaro, Renée Elise Goldsberry, Sunny Suljic, and Kyle MacLachlan. The film follows a young boy, Lewis, who is sent to live with his uncle, Jonathan, in a creaky, old house. He soon learns it was previously inhabited by a villainous warlock. Universal Pictures released the film in the United States on September 21, 2018. It was a box office success, grossing over $131 million worldwide and received mostly positive reviews from critics who largely praised the cast, but said the film did not fully live up to its potential.     Opening Credits; Introduction (1.22; Background History (37.50); The Breadwinner (2017) Trailer (38.37); Discussing Our Opening Feature (40.16); Let's Rate (1:44.34); Introducing Our Second Presentation (1:45.53); The House With The Clock In Its Walls (2018) Trailer (1:47.00); Lights, Camera, Action (1:49.06); How Many Stars (2:26.56); End Credits (2:36.02); Closing Credits (2:37.57)   Opening Credits– Epidemic Sound – Copyright . Just when you thought it was safe to crack open a gourd, scoop out its insides, and carve your choice of expression into its helpless flesh, Big-Ass Pumpkin Day is here again! The BOP mantra has always been "when all else fails, do quality," so this year we're partying along with 2018's way-better-than-it-has-to-be The House With A Clock In Its Walls. The pumpkin juice is flowing and the Malort is conspicuously absent as we talk about this modern kid's classic directed by absolutely no one at all, hitting on the film's amazing cinematography by an industry legend, the book's heavier percentage of Axe Murderer Content, the fragile balance between jokes for kids and jokes for everyone, and the oeuvre of Jack Black's many beards. We also make fun of Eli Roth for about four minutes straight, this IS BAPD after all.SUPPORT CASTING CATE BLANCHETT IN SILLIER AND SILLIER ROLES BY DOWNLOADING HERE. Spooky Season begins with a look at John Bellairs' 1973 franchise starter The House with a Clock in Its Walls, as well as Eli Roth's 2018 adaptation. Joining us for the ride is film critic Dede Crimmins, who brings a unique POV because she saw the film first. The book is *very* 70s and features surprisingly little character development, despite oozing atmosphere (that car chase!). The film is far more male-centric, but fleshes out its characters and set pieces while (obviously) giving stars Cate Blanchett Jack Black much more to do, including turn the latter into a baby with adult face! Creepy indeed!Wanna connect with the show? This week the Mikes are taking a look at the 2018 family fantasy film, The House with a Clock in Its Walls, directed by Eli Roth and starring Jack Black, Cate Blanchett, and Kyle MacLachlan. Listen as Mike Butler and Mike Field discuss how the film is a homage to some of the classic 80's family adventure movies in much the same vein as Goonies. They'll also talk about Eli Roth taking on a very different sort of film from his usually bloody adult fair (albeit, still Halloween focused). The Mikes will point out fun facts from the production, why they believe audiences might not have a taste for these kinds of films anymore despite the film being very good and who's side that darned window is on. So grab your stakes and garlic necklaces, please notice your exits are boarded up and lined with salt, and prepare yourself for Forgotten Horror.

[Watch the video interview on our YouTube Channel] Nathan Barr's passion and curiosity in unique instruments from around the world, including one made from a human femur, has made him one of the most versatile composers working today. His scores for Cabin Fever, Hostel, Hemlock Grove and True Blood have secured his place as a horror composer. But his scores in various other genres like The Americans, Sneaky Pete, and The Son showcase his versatility as a storyteller across any genre. In this All Access we dive into Nathan's path to becoming a composer as well has his recent score for The House With A Clock In Its Walls, which sees him reuniting with director Eli Roth. Nathan also talks about what to expect in his upcoming score for Carnival Row on Amazon. Nathan also recently acquired and restored a 1928 Wurlitzer Theater Organ that used to be installed at 20th Century Fox Studios. He ended up building his studio around it, and Bandrika Studios is now home to some of the most interesting mechanical and automated instruments from around the world. Nathan talks about the history of the Wurlitzer and how it came to be at his studio, and how he's utilizing antique instruments in his modern workflows. Nathan's passion and curiosity as a storyteller is extremely engaging and contagious. By just spending a little time with him, you immediately want to jump down the rabbit hole into a wonderful world where the past meets the present. Stay tuned for an upcoming video where we will get a personal tour from Nathan Barr as he walks us through his studio and demos some of the amazing instruments at Bandrika, including the wonderful Wurlitzer. This week was filled with lots of movie-watching!   First, Dhani talks about The Grinch and how she was disappointed with the changes they made to the core story.  Probably entertaining for kids, but not for those that love the original.  Next, Dhani talks about The House With A Clock In Its Walls.  She was pleasantly surprised by this movie and how entertaining and intriguing the story was!  She thinks this is due to Eli Roth's direction, but also the performances were believable in an unbelievable world!  Enjoyable film for all to see! Next, Dhani watched The Happytime Murders.  Yes, this has puppets... no, it's not for kids.  But, Dhani found this movie really, really funny and thought the story was much better than she thought it would be! Next, John and Dhani finally saw a movie that came out last year, Downsizing.  Both of them discuss the slight disappoint in this movie and the storyline going to a really deep place that they weren't expecting.   Moving on to TV, Dhani felt it necessary to talk about The Walking Dead's mid-season finale and how amazing the show has become even without Rick Grimes.  Then, John and Dhani gush about the special from this week, A Legendary Christmas with John Legend and Chrissy Teigen.  This was the best special Dhani has seen since she was a kid and it was a throwback to the old variety specials of yore.   Finally, in the Actors' Corner, we discuss the films of Matt Damon.  John and Dhani talk about the movies that we love, like, hate, secretly love, and are embarrassed we haven't seen.  It's very difficult to choose these, so listen as we struggle to narrow down our choices.   The Grinch (3:00) ★★ The House With A Clock In Its Walls (11:10) ★★★★ The Happytime Murders (15:50) ★★★ Downsizing (20:40) ★★ The Walking Dead (32:31) A Legendary Christmas with John and Chrissy (39:00) Actors' Corner: Matt Damon (44:47)

Nathan Barr, who began his career with Hans Zimmer, has composed music for more than 30 feature films in addition to his television experience. Has scored all seven seasons of HBO's Emmy-winning series, TRUE BLOOD. He has worked with Alan Ball, gore-horror master Eli Roth, and many other highly respected directors. Roth and Barr have collaborated on HEMLOCK GROVE and five films: GRINDHOUSE, HOSTEL, HOSTEL 2, CABIN FEVER, THE LAST EXORCISM. In one of Nathan Barr's most recent projects, the composer reteams with director Eli Roth for the feature film adaption of John Bellair's children's classic, THE HOUSE WITH A CLOCK IN ITS WALLS.In the tradition of Amblin classics where fantastical events occur in the most unexpected places, Jack Black and Cate Blanchett star in The House with a Clock in Its Walls, from Amblin Entertainment. The magical adventure tells the spine-tingling tale of 10-year-old Lewis (Owen Vaccaro) who goes to live with his uncle in a creaky old house with a mysterious tick-tocking heart. But his new town's sleepy façade jolts to life with a secret world of warlocks and witches when Lewis accidentally awakens the dead.In this episode, Nathan Barr talks about recording this score in his own new studio, including a 1928 Wurlitzer theater organ he had restored over four years. He talks about how this film became a great showcase for the inclusion his newly restored organ and how this score ended up being his most traditional score to date. While diving into the thematic development for principle characters of Lewis and Jonathan, Barr reveals the challenges of writing a horror-score for an Eli Roth film where children, instead of adults, were the target audience.ANNOTATED TRACKS AND SEGMENTS04:15 - "New Zebedee"08:18 - "Jonathan with Ax"09:48 - "Backyard Magic"11:35 - "Raising Isaac"14:18 - "Nickolodeon"18:18 - "Automotans Attack"19:12 - "Insect Book"SOUNDTRACKThe original soundtrack was release on September 21, 2018 by Back Lot Music. This spooky, magical movie reminded host Rory of visiting Bernard's Magic Shop as a kid. Big kids will enjoy this family-friendly horror movie (but it may be a bit scary for little kids). Promotional clips courtesy of Amblin Entertainment EPK. Underscore & music licensed by PodBooth.
