In today's rerun episode of Let's Talk Business, we're excited to bring back an insightful conversation with a marketing legend who has helped generate billions in revenue for major brands. Join our host, Meny Hoffman, as he sits down with Gerry O'Brien—author, speaker, and advisor—to delve into the powerful strategies and insights that have shaped Gerry's remarkable career. Gerry has worked with household names like Procter & Gamble, Coors Lite, and Red Robin. He is known for his innovative marketing concepts, such as the color-changing mountains on Coors Lite bottles. In this episode, Gerry shares his expertise on how small businesses can stand out in competitive markets without massive marketing budgets. Gerry O'Brion emphasizes the power of word-of-mouth referrals and decreased training times by specializing in specific areas, such as Volkswagen car repairs. He explains that small businesses can learn from large brands by listening to and gathering insights from customers to understand their choices and preferences. A significant challenge in influencing customer decisions lies in external factors and the credibility of a company's claims. Gerry highlights the necessity of providing proof for business promises—referred to as the "because" factor—which helps differentiate a company from its competition and assures customers they're making the right choice. O'Brion promotes his book "They Buy Your Because," offering additional resources through his website, and underscores the value of consistent brand messaging across all platforms. He also discusses the role of inspirational "why" messages internally while stressing the importance of clear and unique value propositions in customer-facing communications. Key insights include the need for small businesses to identify unique aspects of their offerings, ask why existing customers choose them over the competition, and tailor their approach to varied sales scenarios. These strategies, coupled with understanding customer mindsets and problems, enhance a small business's ability to succeed in a crowded market. 00:04:51 - Focus efforts, refine niche, demonstrate unique value. 00:09:25 - Proof distinguishes your promise from marketing fluff. 00:12:45 - Helping businesses find their "because" for differentiation. 00:14:22 - What makes your business exceptional? List specifics. 00:17:01 - Strategically structure website for effective visitor engagement. 00:22:43 - Varied outreach methods tailored to listener's company. 00:26:06 - Innovative weed control additive for resistant pests. 00:28:47 - Understand and address decision maker's real concerns. 00:30:51 - Optimize messaging sequence based on consumer insights. 00:34:30 - Narrow your focus to grow faster financially. 00:38:50 - Ensure audience targeting, understanding, outcomes, and credibility. 00:42:42 - Identify clients, unique value, and effective persuasion. 00:43:44 - Focus on delivering a unique, authentic because. The first question a business owner needs to ask is, Where do my current clients come from - and where can I find more like them? Many times, the answer is in small niches where people already value what you offer. That means that the next question you need to ask is, What does your business bring to the table that the bigger competitor doesn't bring or can't bring? And the third question which follows is, What is the most effective way of convincing those potential clients that you offer something that bigger companies do not? The biggest mistake that companies make when it comes to marketing, is making promises without also giving the “Because” - meaning, the reason that you will be able to keep your promise. Promises without a “because” sound like empty marketing fluff. Promises with a “because” offer a compelling reason for a potential client to choose you instead of someone else. The following exercise is very important: Write down, “You should buy from us instead of from our competitors because- “ and complete the sentence with your authentic answer. If your answer sounds the same as any of your competitors, you're just adding to your customers' confusion, when they actually want certainty that they're making the right decision. So think long and hard about the “because” that will make your business unique while remaining true to what you can actually do. Many people confuse their “Because” with their “Why” - and that's a big mistake. Your “Why” is the reason that you do what you do, and is a type of mission statement that can inspire you and your employees. But when you're selling something and a customer is about to give you money, he doesn't care about your “Why”; he cares about your “Because” - meaning, what you do differently from everyone else, and how you can deliver that unique aspect to your client. When you talk about your “Because,” you are giving your client the certainty that buying from you is the right choice. The main thing that big companies do better than small companies is listening and learning from their customers. Understanding the mindset of the people you serve is the foundation of all influence. So act like the big companies, and learn to ask questions. Make surveys. Go to the people who chose your competitor instead of you and ask them why they made that decision. Getting this information will help you better focus on how to close the next sale. Gerry Website Linkedin They Buy Your Because Panda Doc

What does your company do that your competitors can't or don't do that proves your value to customers? Marketing expert Gerry O'Brion joins host Menny Hoffman to discuss how small businesses can break through crowded markets using lessons from big brands. In this insightful interview, Gerry explains his "Because Framework" for developing compelling and differentiated messaging that attracts the right customers. Gerry O'Brion speaks to companies and sales teams looking to drive revenue in crowded industries during times of great change. He teaches an influential yet straightforward framework that prompts customers to choose you over all other options. Gerry is renowned for revealing the “Power of BECAUSE” – the missing element that sparks sales and propels companies beyond the sea of sameness. After years as a marketing and strategy executive building iconic brands like Tide and Coors Light, he leveraged his C-suite experience with billion-dollar companies to create a proven system for influence. Gerry's framework enables organizations of any size to achieve the gravitas and effectiveness of leading brands through targeted strategies. (00:00:00 - 00:06:30) Demystifying Big Brand Magic Big budgets help, but small businesses can still succeed through specificity - narrow your focus to serve your ideal customers exceptionally well. Start crafting your marketing message by identifying your ideal customer and their needs using the "Because Framework": Who are you influencing? What are their insights? What's the promise/outcome? What's the proof (your "because")? Your "because" must communicate what makes you different and better suited to delivering on your promise. Generic claims sound like marketing fluff. (00:06:31 - 00:15:00) Mission vs. Messaging - What Customers Care About Your company's inspirational "why" matters internally but customers care about "what" you do for them and "how" you deliver. You can have multiple "becauses" to use for different audiences and at different points in your sales process. If a competitor chose another provider over you, use that as an opportunity to uncover insights into their decision-making. (00:15:01 - 00:23:30) Cracking the Code of Hard-to-Reach Prospects An ultra-specific "because" tailored to the mindset of your influencer gave one company immediate access to previously unreachable decision-makers. If you're struggling to break through, you likely need to better understand the person you're trying to influence and what problems they need to be solved. Your "because" must be compelling and unique enough that ideal customers want to engage upon seeing/hearing it. (00:23:31 - 00:31:30) Packaging Persuasion - Making the Most of Limited Space For product packaging with limited space, be strategic about the messaging progression and highlight your most compelling "because" first. The "Because Framework" works the same whether you're marketing to consumers, retailers, or distributors - identify who you're influencing and what matters most to them. Highly targeted niche marketing helps small businesses punch above their weight class and appear more credible. (00:31:31 - 00:39:00) The Power of Precision - Dominating Your Niche When launching something new with a limited budget, ultra-specificity about who you serve helps you save money and increase conversion rates. Big brands are relentless about listening to customers for insights - small businesses should follow suit. If you lose out on a sale, use it as a learning opportunity to determine if something in your framework needs improvement. Want to connect with Gerry O'Brion? Athrú poirt ag an IABA agus dornálaithe óga á gcur chun troda. The Irish Boxing Association, the IABA, have confirmed that they are going to backtrack on a decision they announced yesterday, and that they will now be sending a team to the World Under-18 Championship in Spain next month . Tá sé deimhnithe ag Cumann Dornálaíochta na hÉireann, an IABA, go bhfuil siad le ghabháil siar ar chinneadh a d'fhógair siad arú inné, agus go mbeidh siad anois ag cur foireann chuig Craobh Faoi Ocht mBliana Déag an Domhain sa Spáinn an mhí seo chugainn. When the boxers gathered for a team training session at the IABA high performance center in Dublin 10 days ago, they were told that a reduced team of twelve or so would be sent to Spain in an effort to reduce costs, but when the boxers returned to training last Saturday, they were told that no team at all would be sent to Spain. Nuair a chruinnigh na dornálaithe do sheisiún traenála foirne in ionad ardfheidhmíochta an IABA i mBaile Átha Cliath 10 lá ó shin, dúradh leo gur foireann laghadaithe, dáréag nó mar sin a bheithfí ag cur chun na Spáinne, i n-iarrachtaí costas a laghdú, ach nuair a d'fhill na dornálaithe don traenáil Dé Sathairn seo caite, dúradh leo nach mbeadh aon fhoireann chor ar bith á chur chun na Spáinne. The young boxers were told that due to a decision made by the High Council of the Organization to boycott the games, a team would not travel. Dúradh leis na dornálaithe óga gur de bharr cinneadh a rinne Ard Chomhairle na hEagraíochta boycott a chur ar na cluichí, nach mbeadh foireann ag taisteal. The boycott was said to be related to a decision made by the head of the world organization, the IBA, to allow a team from Russia and Belarus to participate in the competition at the World Championship. Bhain an boycott dúradh le cinneadh a rinne an ceann eagraíocht dhomhanda, an IBA, cead a thabhairt d'fhoireann ón Rúis agus ón mBealarúis páirt a ghlacadh san iomaíocht ag Craobh an Domhain. The boxers were heartbroken and their friends and parents organized an online petition campaign, and on social media, to try to convince the authorities to change their decision. Bhí na dornálaithe croíbhriste agus d'eagraigh cairde agus tuismitheoirí leo feachtas achainí ar líne, agus ar na meáin shóisialta, féachaint a chur ina luí ar na húdaráis a gcinneadh a athrú. The President of the Boxing Association of Ireland Gerry O'Mahony confirmed to Nuacht RTE/TG4 this evening that it is now possible to send twelve to Spain, because the Spanish Government has refused travel permission to the teams from Russia and Belarus. Dheimhnigh Uachtarán Chumann Dornálaíochta na hÉireann Gerry O'Mahony do Nuacht RTE/TG4 tráthnóna go bhfuil fúthú anois dáréag a chur chun na Spáinne, de bharr go bhfuil Rialtas na Spáinne i ndiaidh cead taistil a dhiúltú do na foirne as an Rúis agus an Bhealarúis. He strongly denied that efforts to save money had anything to do with the IABA's decision to announce a boycott of the world games yesterday. Shéan sé go láidir go raibh aon bhaint ag iarrachtaí airgead a shábáil le cinneadh an IABA boycott a fhógairt ar na cluichí domhanda arú inné.
