Chris and Alex delve into the stop-motion world of Guillermo del Toro's Pinocchio (Guillermo del Toro & Mark Gustafson, 2022) for Episode 152 of the podcast, joined in this discussion of loss, love, control, and craft by musicologist and animation historian Dr Lisa Scoggin. Lisa is an expert in animation and its relationship to music, publishing widely on everything from United Productions of America (UPA) to Cartoon Saloon, and with expertise that covers film and television music, ludomusicology, and twentieth-century American and British art music. Topics include where Guillermo del Toro's Pinocchio fits within Hollywood's growing stop-motion renaissance; puppetry, agency, monstrosity, and the “terrible joy” of Pinocchio's creation; the film's wartime context and contribution of its Fascist imagery to images of collective national trauma; Geppetto's narration and twice-told tales foregrounded as memory; the ‘lyrical' role of lullabies and folk songs in depicting Pinocchio's self-growth; and what del Toro's film tells us about how things that take time to build can be destroyed in an instant. **Fantasy/Animation theme tune composed by Francisca Araujo** **As featured on Feedspot's 25 Best London Education Podcasts**

Presented by Ben Mitchell and Steve Henderson Interviews conducted by Ben Mitchell, Steve Henderson and Julia Young Edited, produced and music by Ben Mitchell
Founded back in 1999 by Tomm Moore, Paul Young and Nora Twomey, Irish animation studio Cartoon Saloon has earned a worldwide reputation off the back of films such as The Secret Of Kells, Song Of The Sea and The Breadwinner. In a very special episode of STUDIOCANAL Presents, the trio join regular host Simon Brew to talk about the story of Cartoon Saloon, its films, and its birthday. It's quite the tale...
Kilkenny may not have, on the surface of things, seemed the most obvious place to become a hub for animation. But, the city hosts not one, but two multi award winning animations studio as well as a festival, Kilkenny Animated, that celebrates creativity and the craft of the visual image. Andrea was joined by Paul Young, Co- founder & Creative Director of Cartoon Saloon, Claire Finn, Managing Director at Lighthouse Studios to discuss this.
Jose has over twenty years' experience in publishing comics and illustrating for magazines, as well as publishing an award-winning graphic novel, Cosecha Rosa. Jose's work as animation art director includes the films: Bunuel In The Labyrinth Of The Turtles, the Oscar nominated Robot Dreams, and the upcoming feature Decorado, by Alberto Vazquez. Jose was also an Art Director on the television series, Vikingskool, for Cartoon Saloon.
(Spoiler Section Length - 5min 42sec) Today we cover another movie from Cartoon Saloon, creators of The Secret of Kells and also a lot of other things, some of which - like a short for the Star Wars anthology series Visions - have come out since we covered their first film. Their studio only continues to put interesting and beautiful works out, only continues to become more and more prominent, and yet still it feels like if one were to say the studio's name or the name of one of their movies to a random layperson they'd receive only blank stares in return. They definitely deserve to be better known than they are... but does this particular film support that idea, or is this one a rare dud? Presenting episode 112 of the Skwigly Animation Podcast! In this episode we welcome back director Robert Morgan, whose live-action/animation hybrid horror feature film 'Stopmotion' is released on Shudder this month. Starring Aisling Franciosi as haunted stop-motion animator Ella Blake alongside Stella Gonet and Tom York, Stopmotion is written by Robert Morgan with Robin King and recently enjoyed a festival run where it picked up the award for Best Director at Fantastic Fest and the Special Jury Award at Sitges. Filmed in live-action combined with Robert Morgan's signature brand of nightmarish puppet design and uncanny stop-motion animation, the film expands on a multi-award-winning legacy of (mostly) animated horror shorts that include The Man in the Lower Left Hand Corner of the Photograph, The Cat With Hands, The Separation, Invocation and Bobby Yeah, the latter picking up a BAFTA nomination for Animated Short in 2012. Morgan's body of work also includes contributions to YouTube phenomenon Don't Hug Me I'm Scared and the feature films The ABCs of Death 2 and To Dust, as well as the tribute films Belial's Dream and Tomorrow I Will Be Dirt, created for Arrow's BD releases of cult horror classics Basket Case and Schramm respectively. Also discussed: Festival reports from Anima Brussels, Animation Dingle and Cardiff Animation Festival, an overview of some of the exciting projects coming out of the Irish animation sector, 25 years of Cartoon Saloon, the BFI's upcoming 'Stop-Motion' season curated by Justin Johnson, 'Ren & Stimpy' reboot leaks and the bizarre fate of 'Coyote Vs. Acme'. Presented by Ben Mitchell and Steve Henderson Interview conducted by Ben Mitchell Edited, produced and music by Ben Mitchell

The Breadwinner is a 2017 animated drama film from Irish animation studio Cartoon Saloon directed by Nora Twomey. Based on the best-selling novel by Deborah Ellis, the film was an international co-production between Canada, the Republic of Ireland and Luxembourg, and received a limited release on 17 November 2017. The film had its world premiere at the 2017 Toronto International Film Festival in September. The Breadwinner received a nomination for Best Animated Feature at the 90th Academy Awards but lost to Coco. The House with a Clock in Its Walls is a 2018 American fantasy comedy film directed by Eli Roth, based on the 1973 novel of the same name by John Bellairs. It stars Jack Black, Cate Blanchett, Owen Vaccaro, Renée Elise Goldsberry, Sunny Suljic, and Kyle MacLachlan. The film follows a young boy, Lewis, who is sent to live with his uncle, Jonathan, in a creaky, old house. He soon learns it was previously inhabited by a villainous warlock. Universal Pictures released the film in the United States on September 21, 2018. It was a box office success, grossing over $131 million worldwide and received mostly positive reviews from critics who largely praised the cast, but said the film did not fully live up to its potential. In this episode of Journey to the Blue Sky, Patricia and Arun discuss about the 2009 Blue Sky Studios animated film Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs, the third installment in the Ice Age franchise. Manny and Ellie are about to have a baby and that leaves Sid jealous that he isn't getting any more attention and Diego feeling like he's too old to being a part of the pack. Sid finds three eggs and decides to raise them as his own. That is the eggs hatched into three tyrannosaurus rex babies and the mother takes them and Sid underground into a lost world where the dinosaurs have been residing. It's up to Manny, Diego, Ellie, Crash, Eddie, and an adventurous weasel named Buck Wild to rescue Sid. Meanwhile, Scrat finds a flying squirrel who is both after the acorn he's been chasing and has a major crush on him. Who will he choose? When the film was released, it made over $886 million dollars out of a $90 million dollar budget. It was not only the highest grossing animated film of 2009, but the third highest grossing film of 2009 behind Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince and Avatar. In a year where studios such as Disney, Pixar, DreamWorks, and Sony were producing critically acclaimed animated films with The Princess and the Frog, Up!, Monsters vs. Aliens, and Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs respectfully and newcomers such as Laika and Cartoon Saloon were entering into the competition with their big premieres Coraline and The Secret of Kells, how does Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs stack up? Listen and find out. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/old-school-lane/support
