The Breadwinner is a 2017 animated drama film from Irish animation studio Cartoon Saloon directed by Nora Twomey. Based on the best-selling novel by Deborah Ellis, the film was an international co-production between Canada, the Republic of Ireland and Luxembourg, and received a limited release on 17 November 2017. The film had its world premiere at the 2017 Toronto International Film Festival in September. The Breadwinner received a nomination for Best Animated Feature at the 90th Academy Awards but lost to Coco. The House with a Clock in Its Walls is a 2018 American fantasy comedy film directed by Eli Roth, based on the 1973 novel of the same name by John Bellairs. It stars Jack Black, Cate Blanchett, Owen Vaccaro, Renée Elise Goldsberry, Sunny Suljic, and Kyle MacLachlan. The film follows a young boy, Lewis, who is sent to live with his uncle, Jonathan, in a creaky, old house. He soon learns it was previously inhabited by a villainous warlock. Universal Pictures released the film in the United States on September 21, 2018. It was a box office success, grossing over $131 million worldwide and received mostly positive reviews from critics who largely praised the cast, but said the film did not fully live up to its potential. What is up SharkNation! On this episode, Luke and Mark chat to film maker and co-founder of Cartoon Saloon -Tomm Moore. Kilkenny-based Cartoon Saloon is a five-time Academy Award®, Golden Globe®, BAFTA and Emmy nominated animation studio formed by Paul Young, Tomm Moore and Nora Twomey. From award-winning shorts to feature films and TV series, Cartoon Saloon has carved a special place in the international Animation industry. The studio is best known for its animated feature films The Secret of Kells, Song of the Sea, The Breadwinner and Wolfwalkers. Tomm describes how he got involved with animation and how the company has grown over the last 22 years, employing hundreds of staff locally. Key Takeaways: 1. In the age of the internet, you can build a business anywhere. Kilkenny - a small city in the middle of Ireland can be the base for a business that conquers an industry. You don't have to go to London or NYC anymore. 2. Don't expect overnight success - sometimes it's time in the game that pays off. Be patient and make great work - the rest should fall in to place over time. 3. If you have an artistic child - encourage them as much as possible - they could grow up to be an Academy Award nominee, like Tomm. 4. Focus on your strengths and hire for gaps. Tomm mentioned that they have brought in a very experienced MD to help maintain and grow the business, so the creators can get on with creating. 5. If you're passionate about something, it is possible to build a business and life around that. You don't have to settle for a career you don't like just because it pays well. In this 61-minute "master shot" episode, Jeffrey Overstreet is joined once again by Dr. Lindsay Marshall for a conversation with two of the founding storytellers and animators at Cartoon Saloon, Tomm Moore and Nora Twomey. Together with their co-conspirators Paul Young and Ross Stewart, they are responsible for an extraordinary run of films: The Secret of Kells, Song of the Sea, The Breadwinner, and the recent Wolfwalkers. Listen in as they discuss the secrets of their success and the projects that they're working on now.

In this episode of Parallel Fiction, Heather and Jeff bring stories from Irish artists into focus as they celebrate St. Patricks Day. Pulling inspiration from the green holiday, the hosts made sure to feature work that was created outside of their home in the US. Heather and Jeff talk about the critically acclaimed animated film The Secret of Kells and the Eveline portion of James Joyce's masterpiece Dubliners. Heather starts first in the presentation portion with the Eveline short story of Dubliners, a novel that is broken up into many separate (parallel) stories of Irishmen and women of all ages in the early 1900's. Heather commends the nuance and heartbreak of the main character Eveline, and her struggle to move from Ireland. The ending particularly stuck with Heather, as writer James Joyce struck a nerve with all of the short stories of Dubliners that stick with most readers long after they have finished the book. Fun Fact! The standard "This movie is a work of fiction" disclaimer gets a little twist at the end: "Nobody was robbed during the making of this movie. Except you." Jeff brings us back into the second portion of summaries with the animated feature film The Secret of Kells, which is the fictionalized story of the real life Book of Kells. Set in the 800's, the film depicts a ton of medieval Irish lore that often times gets forgotten in pop culture. Jeff notes that all of the imagery and legends mentioned in the film inspired him to look up more and go down a rabbit hole of research. An Oscar nominated film, The Book of Kells is much more than the children's move it pretends to be. True Story! While the plot of the film is fictional, the Book of Kells is very real. We highly recommend you google it and take a look at some of the pages. Following these reviews, Heather and Jeff dive into commonalities between the two works such as traditions, culture, landscape, personal growth, and Irish pride. Listen in to hear Jeff and Heather's candid thoughts on the masterpiece scenes of each story, how Dubliners and The Secret of Kells compare, and how Jeff and Heather relate the two. Enjoy this episode in St. Patricks Day and every day after for some stories from the Emerald Isle! Heather's rating for Dubliners: Very Nice – Even though there is a heavy feeling to every short story, they are all so well written. James Joyce's writing style is something to be celebrated. Jeff's rating for The Secret of Kells: Very Nice – A great animated movie worth your time on its visuals at minimum. That being said, there are some problematic depictions of POC.

Uh-oh! It's time for Episode 20 of The Big Reviewski, the highly contagious film show from JOE and Her that is so diseased this week, it had to be placed in quarantine, so listen at your own peril. Don't say we didn't warn you. Soon-to-be ex-host Eoghan Doherty is joined by two relatively healthy (for now, at least) film friends... it is, of course, Rory Cashin and Paul Moore. As ever, it's a super show with head-scratching Haiclues, riveting reviews (hello there, Book Club) and an interview with Nora Twomey, the incredibly talented Irish director of the Oscar-nominated film, The Breadwinner, and co-founder of the internationally-beloved animation studio, Cartoon Saloon. And, just to keep things nice and upbeat and cheerful, we also pick out our favourite movie deaths of all time. Yay! Death! Don't ask, just listen...
Sam is joined by writer-director Nora Twomey and voice actor Saara Chaudry to talk about The Breadwinner. In cinemas now. The third feature length film to come out of Kilkenny-based animation studio Cartoon Saloon, after The Secret of Kells (2009) and Song of the Sea (2015), Nora Twomey’s The Breadwinner revolves around the daily struggles facing 11-year-old Parvana in Taliban-controlled Kabul, Afghanistan. Executive produced by Angelina Jolie and based on Deborah Ellis’ best-selling novel of the same name published in 2000, The Breadwinner is an inspiring and ultimately uplifting tale of familial love and loyalty in the face of oppressionAfter her father is unjustly arrested by the Taliban, Parvana’s family are left without a man of the house, and the young girl is forced to dress and pass herself off as a boy. This allows Parvana to move around the city and work to provide the money the family need to survive. In a culture where females are forbidden from travelling anywhere alone, this places Parvana in constant danger, but desperate times call for desperate solutions.
With Francine Stock. Nora Twomey, director of The Breadwinner, explains how an animation about life under the Taliban in Afghanistan was produced by Angelina Jolie and made in Kilkenny Olivia Hetreed is president of the Writers Guild Of Great Britain that published a report this week which revealed that only 16% of screenwriters are female. She crunches the figures with Francine, and discusses the moment she woke up one day and wondered "where have all the women gone ?". She reveals why she has been stereotyped as a writer who specializes in costume dramas after penning the adaptation of Girl With The Pearl Earring, and why she would really love to write science fiction. Perfume expert and film writer Dariush Alavi detects the scent of film noir in his olfactory history of the movies and reveals what Barbara Stanwyck might be wearing in Double Indemnity to tempt Fred MacMurray. Directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller joined an illustrious club when they were removed from the production of the latest Star Wars spin-off, Solo. Five directors, for instance, left the helm of The Wizard Of Oz, with Victor Fleming taking the ultimate credit. Larushka Ivan-Zadeh takes us through some of the famous names who were handed their P45,and reveals the contents of the lesser-known Eastwood Rule, named after Clint Eastwood.
