A Serial Killer & Tobacco Where?! – Box of Oddities What do an elusive serial killer and some genuinely questionable medical practices have in common? Nothing—except that they're both unbelievably weird, unsettling, and featured in this episode! First, Kat unpacks the chilling case of the Connecticut River Valley Killer, an unidentified predator who terrorized New England with a string of brutal attacks. Who was behind these unsolved crimes, and could they still be out there? (Spoiler: Probably. Sleep well.) Then, Jethro takes a deep inhale of history's most baffling medical treatments—tobacco enemas. Yes, you read that correctly. Once upon a time, doctors thought blowing smoke up your…well…you know was a cure-all. Turns out, it was just as terrible an idea as it sounds. Murder, mystery, and medically sanctioned nonsense—what more could you ask for? On May 24th, 1989, the body of 16-year-old Jessica Briggs was pulled from the waters of Casco Bay in Portland, Maine. For some time afterward there were no names suspects; that is, until law enforcement honed in on Briggs' ex-boyfriend— Anthony Sanborn, also 16. Despite the fact that no forensic evidence from the scene matched Sanborn, there were three witness statements that would seem to provide motive AND put him at the scene. Based upon those statements, although Sanborn continued to state his innocence, he was convicted. Decades later, with the Innocence Project involved, a new investigation was launched and Sanborn was granted a post-conviction hearing. What private investigator Kevin Cady uncovered would turn everything on its head. In August 1988, 22-year-old Jane Boroski was seven months pregnant and thirsty after spending hours in the summer heat at the county fair near Swanzey, New Hampshire. She pulled over in an empty parking lot to slip some pocket change into a vending machine outside a convenience store that had closed for the night. She was then attacked, being stabbed 27 times by the Connecticut River Valley serial killer. She ultimately survived the attack along with her then-unborn child. The Connecticut River Valley Killer was never brought to justice, and she may have also been his final victim. Boroski now has a podcast called "Invisible Tears" and is actively advocating for justice for her fellow Connecticut River Valley victims and the families in other unsolved cases across the state. Beginning in the late 1970s and continuing through the early 1980s, Americans (particularly women in the New England area) grew more and more concerned about the serial killer on the loose— the man who was both calculated and unimaginably brutal. His victims' bodies were all recovered in a fifty-mile radius in the Connecticut River Valley along the New Hampshire/Vermont border near Route 91, giving him his name— The Connecticut River Valley Killer. Please consider supporting the pod by joining us over on our Patreon page! In 1988, twenty-two year old Jane Boroski was attacked at a soda vending machine. The seven-month-pregnant New Hampshire woman was stabbed 27 times and left for dead. Boroski is believed to be the last victim and only survivor of the Connecticut River Valley Killer, a suspect who murdered at least seven women between 1978 and ‘88. Decades later, the question remains why did he kill and where did he go?In the podcast “Dark Valley'' from Crawlspace Media and Glassbox Media, Jennifer Amell looks back at the murders along the Vermont/New Hampshire corridor. The host accompanies Jane as she reexamines the lasting impact of the attack on her life, all the while seeking new information on who the Valley Killer - or Valley Killers - were.OUR SPOILER-FREE REVIEWS OF "DARK VALLEY" BEGIN IN THE FINAL TEN MINUTES OF THE EPISODE.In Crime of the Week: cowabunga!
Dark Valley is an investigative true crime series about 8 women who were brutally murdered by an unidentified serial killer. Known as the Connecticut River Valley Killer, he prowled the borderland of Vermont and New Hampshire in the 1980s. These cases remain unsolved to this day. Produced and hosted by Jennifer Amell, Dark Valley is a Crawlspace Media production under the guidance of founders, Tim Pilleri and Lance Reenstierna, and in partnership with Glassbox Media. Narratively driven, Dark Valley centralizes the story of Jane Boroksi, considered to be the lone survivor of the Valley Killer as she and Jennifer investigate the cold cases of Catherine Millican, Elizabeth Betsy Critchley, Heidi Martin, Bernice Courtemanche, Ellen Fried, Eva Morse, Lynda Moore, and Barbara Agnew. Jane Boroski recounts her harrowing attack in 1988, when a stranger savagely stabbed her 27 times while she was pregnant. The investigation unfolds in real-time as Jennifer works to highlight the victims' voices and uncover new leads and suspects by talking with law enforcement, criminal profiler Dr. John Philpin, victims' families, and locals. Hey, this is Scott, and you're listening to What Was That Like. But this is not a regular episode of What Was That Like. I've got a really cool BONUS episode for you today. What you're about to hear is the first episode in a new podcast series called Dark Valley. This series is investigation-oriented, and it's about as True-Crime as you can get. You're gonna learn about America's “unknown serial killer” – or by the name given to him by law enforcement and the media: The Connecticut River Valley Killer. And it's all laid out from the perspective of that murderer's only surviving victim, Jane Boroski. Can you imagine being attacked by a serial killer? And this was not a routine attack. Jane was stabbed 27 times by this man, whom she had never met. Oh, and when it happened, Jane was 7 months pregnant. In this first episode of the series, Jane talks about what happened. And I also had a conversation with Jane, and asked her a few questions of my own about this whole experience. You'll hear that right after this episode plays, and of course we'll have this week's Listener Story as we do on every episode. The Dark Valley podcast series is produced by Crawlspace Media, and if you like this first episode, you can go and listen to the next one on Apple, Spotify, or whatever app you're listening on right now. So I hope you enjoy this first episode of Dark Valley, followed by my conversation with Jane Boroski. Jane Boroski is the lone survivor of the Connecticut river valley killer. In the 1980's, a serial killer was preying on women in the area surrounding the Connecticut River Valley in New Hampshire and Vermont. To this day, the identity of the killer is still unconfirmed, and remains one of New England's most prolific unsolved cases.
It was August 6, 1988, when 22-year-old Jane Boroski, seven months pregnant, was one her way back from a county fair in Keene, New Hampshire. She decided to stop at a convenience store in West Swanzey to buy a drink but it was closed. So she got something from a vending machine. When Ms. Boroski got back to her car she noticed a Jeep Wagoneer had parked next to her. As terrifying as this must have been she then saw through her rear-view mirror, the driver of the vehicle walking around the back of her vehicle...I'll let Jane tell the rest her story. 1988 - West Swanzey, New Hampshire. On a hot summer night in 1988, 22-year-old Jane Boroski, who was 7-months pregnant, stopped at a convenience store on her way home from a fair, when she was attacked by an unknown assailant who stabbed her 27 times and left her for dead. Miraculously, Jane survived... and so did her baby. In the 1980's, a serial killer was preying on women in the area surrounding the Connecticut River Valley in New Hampshire and Vermont. To this day, the identity of the killer is still unconfirmed, and remains one of New England's most prolific unsolved cases. There are 6 known victims connected to the Connecticut River Valley Killer, and one survivor—who believes that without a doubt, she almost became his 7th. But there is so much more to Jane Boroski than the night she was attacked, and 34-years later, she's ready to open up about it. This is Jane's story... in her own words. An unknown killer terrorized the area around the Connecticut River Valley for almost a decade in the 1980s. Back in the days before mobile phones and CCTV cameras on every corner, this man struck in remote areas, targeting women traveling alone. Police were left scratching their heads without a main suspect until 1997, when a man called Gary Westover saw his failing health as a sign that the time was right to get something off his chest. He shared a chilling tale of a night out with friends that ended with the death of a woman thought to have been killed by the Connecticut River Valley Killer. After years of being nothing but a cautionary tale in the headlines, could this finally put a face to the killer that has eluded police for so long? Learn more about your ad choices. The Connecticut River Valley Killer terrorized multiple states in the 1980s, including New Hampshire. Women would be taken without any witnesses, murdered and dumped in nearby remote locations. Authorities linked seven murders together based on the killer's MO. He would stab the women to death, mainly in the neck and leave them somewhat close to each other. Police had very few leads until one woman survived his brutal attack. It has been over 40 years and this killer is still unknown.#newhapshire #unsolved #murderer #serialkiller #truecrime #cultscrimesandcabernet
Welcome back to... no, that can't be right... Episode 30?! of Smoke Til' It's Gone or Die! Somehow we've made it this far, and we're so thrilled you are along for the ride. In this episode, Patty tells the tale of the Connecticut River Valley Killer who has never been caught, despite all the evidence compiled over multiple years from multiple victims; this one is wild, with an 'I Survived' tale as well as some described violence that may not be suitable for the softer-hearted. Rylee dives deeper into CBD, how we interact with it, and the potential effects it can have on our little stoner bodies! Rylee's Probable Cause this week is a GoFundMe page for an incredible human we adore, Jess! Please take a look-see at this link right here and if you have some dollars, donate! SOJ provides grants to law enforcement for advanced DNA analysis solutions, such as forensic genealogy and next-generation sequencing. It’s October 24th, 1978 in New London NH. The police are on scene at the Chandler Brook Wetland Preserve, responding to reports of a young female body being found. They were not prepared for the carnage they were about to witness. The 27 year old woman, lies there, motionless, void of any trace of life. She had been stabbed over 20 times. Authorities knew they had a murder on their hands, but what they didn’t know, is they were standing over the very first victim of The Connecticut River Valley killer. The beginning of a terror that would continue for years to come.

New Hampshire is picture perfect. Beneath the natural beauty, there's a history of murder that no one seems to talk about. Spanning over 40 years, women of all ages and backgrounds have been abducted and murdered. The woods of New Hampshire became a dumping grounds for discarded women. Some of those killings have been attributed to an unknown serial killer known only as the Connecticut River Valley Killer who mostly operated in the 1980s before going silent. Or did he? Mountain Murders takes a DEEP look into some of the 55 unsolved murders in New Hampshire. Was the Connecticut River Valley Killer responsible for more deaths? Or was there multiple killers operating in the same area?
22 year old Jane Boroski was driving home from the county fair in Keene, New Hampshire late on the night of August 6, 1988, when she stopped for a soda at a machine outside of a closed convenience store. She was 7 months pregnant and it was a hot summer night. She got a soda from the machine, went back to her car, and sat there for a moment to have the drink. She gave little thought to a Jeep Wagoner that had pulled into the parking lot and parked right next to her. She however noticed when the man driving the vehicle walked around the back of her car and right up to her window. He asked her if the payphone was working, and then immediately opened her door, reached in and grabbed her and dragged her out of her car and held a knife to her. At a certain point, Jane attempts to break free and run away from her attacker, but he catches up to her, takes her to the ground, and stabs and slashes at her multiple times. He stops after a while, and gets up and goes back to his vehicle and drives away, leaving Jane for dead. Jane struggles to make her way back to her car, but manages to do so, and drives off to a friend's house down the road to get help. She makes it to her friend’s house, who calls 911, and despite the vicious attack, Jane, and her unborn child, both survive the ordeal. Jane doesn't realize it, but she is a potential survivor of the Connecticut River Valley Killer, who is believed to have murdered at least 7 other women over the previous decade. And to this day, the killer's identity is still unknown. The name makes about as much sense as the motives behind these killings. The bones of 6 women were all found in the same location and this serial killer is still on the loose. Later on we discuss the sad and senseless abduction of Matthew Chase as he deposited his check into an ATM. The suspected abductor was actually caught on an ATM camera. Finally we talk about some crop circles! In the early 90's there were hundreds upon hundreds of crop circle formations in and around the Stonehenge area of England. So much fascinating and compelling data that this was certainly not man-made. Josh on YouTube: www.youtube.com/DancingWithGhosts Mike on Youtube: www.youtube.com/OCPCommunications
