Welcome to Hot Topics! Gabrielle Crichlow talks to guest Alesia Galati about her experience growing up in a cult. In this episode, Alesia and Gabrielle delve into the topic of growing up in a cult. Alesia, who was raised in a cult for 10 years, shares her personal experiences, shedding light on the challenges she and her siblings faced. They discuss how Alesia's mother joined the cult through a women's program affiliated with a mega church, ultimately leading them down a path of control and reliance on a charismatic leader. The conversation highlights the impact and lasting effects of growing up in a cult-like environment. Alesia emphasizes that cults can exist within modern-day organizations, including churches, and are not solely characterized by extreme behaviors like mass suicides. By sharing her own story, Alesia aims to raise awareness about the signs of cult behavior and the importance of critical thinking and autonomy in religious and spiritual contexts. The podcast also explores the reasons behind Alesia's mother's involvement in the cult, as well as the tragic circumstances surrounding her passing due to a drug overdose. Although Alesia chooses not to disclose the cult's name for personal reasons, she reveals that its leader and members are aware of her existence. Throughout the conversation, Alesia reflects on her experiences within the cult, including the isolation and control that she and her siblings endured. She discusses how she was coerced into attending a specific bible college under the threat of losing her home. Drawing parallels between cults and religions, Alesia points out that the only difference lies in the longevity of religions. She believes that any situation where a leader makes decisions for others and restricts independent thinking can exhibit cult-like behavior. As the discussion comes to a close, Alesia shares words of wisdom, promoting the importance of empowering individuals to embrace their true selves and flourish. The episode transcript provides valuable insights into the experiences and perspectives of someone who grew up in a cult-like environment, shedding light on the potential dangers and control exerted by such groups. It serves as a reminder to recognize and understand the signs of cult behavior while encouraging critical thinking and autonomy in religious and spiritual contexts. Who is Alesia Galati? This episode tells a truly unbelievable true story, as shared by abduction and abuse survivor Dawn McCarty. Added to that was the religious trauma syndrome she had to deal with as part of the LDS cult, and you have a situation that few would survive and stay sane. Not on ly did she survive, she's now in a position to help others who come out of highly traumatic backgrounds. Above all, this is a story of the strength of the human will overcoming tremendous adversities. Read more about Dawn's story in the book Transforming Pain Into Purpose available on Amazon. This week's guest is ex-cult member Vennie Kocsis, who grew up in the fundamentalist Bible cult founded by Sam Fife--the Move of God, or just "The Move." Reaching its heyday in the mid-1970s, not only was it growing, it was reaching into the mainstream of society also. Focusing heavily on an end-times, apocalyptic message, Fife's group seemingly started out innocently enough...but ultimately descended into a high-control religious group, complete with compounds, guns, and long working hours for its adherents. Vennie grew up in the midst of that--and ultimately escaped and began the difficult journey of rebuilding her life, post-cult. This is a story of survival of horrific abuses, but just as equally, a story of the triumph of the human will over incredible adversity. Not only do we break down the early history of the Church of Scientology and its founder, L Ron Hubbard, we delve into the psychology and tactics used by Scientology to control and coerce its adherents. In this episode, I sit down with Susan Dones to discuss her experiences within NXIVM. Known as one of the "NXIVM Nine" - a group of original members - Susan watched insurmountable horrors unfold, as the company she believed in and dedicated her life too, began to turn toxic, exploitative and illegal. Since leaving NXIVM, Susan represented herself in a landmark court case which she WON. In this miniseries I talk with Micah Losh, author of the recently published memoir Mentally Diseased. During Micah's childhood in the Jehovah's Witnesses, he lost his father. This eternal spiritual relationship was then held hostage, with Micah being told that the only way to be reunited is to fully submit to the teachings of the Watchtower Organisation. Slipping into a deep depression, Micah received little to no support, and was actually blamed instead for his suffering, told it was his reluctance to conform to the JW's fully that caused this ill-mental health. This is Micah's troubling journey through a toxic religious group that almost claimed Micah's life. TW - talk of suicide. In 1974, at twelve years old, Deb Donner's mother joined what she thought was loving, trusting, close-knit Christian Fellowship, committed to helping anyone in need called, The Ingleside United Methodist Church. They called themselves The Fellowship, and they were pastored by a man named Lou Hillendahl who touted an ‘inner healing ministry' that 'helped hundreds of people with all kinds of problems'. TW: adult & child abuse & sexual abuse Lou infused his version of biblical teachings with pseudo-psycho beliefs, constantly creating new “therapies” to “deal with the personal, family and sexual” problems he identified within his parishioners. In 1976, Lou began teaching that “sex is a myth in our culture” and developed bizarre therapies to prove his theory. At 14, against Deb's will, she was involved in several of the therapies. Knowing she wasn't supposed to talk about what she had experienced, she also knew it wasn't right, and told someone. The media got hold of the information and started bombarding Lou for interviews. When the church found out, they decided to take action and hold him accountable. On March 21, 1977, Lou submitted his resignation to the Methodist church to avoid a heresy trial. Lou and several of his devoted followers decided to create their own community, and eventually purchased a 58-acre plot of land on Vashon Island in Washington State where they lived in big green army tents for years while the community built homes, and a couple buildings. They called themselves The Wesleyan Community, officially called, The Wesleyan Christian Community Church and Retreat Center. Deb shares the story of her time in Ingleside and on Vashon Island until she eventually escaped in February of 1981, when she was 19 years old. Melissa was raised in a conservative, cult-like faction of the fundamentalist Seventh-Day Adventist Church. She left the church when she turned 18 and it was the late 80's. At the time, she was thinking she was out, done, through. Throwing herself into "the real world" she modeled, acted, earned an Ivy League degree, worked in politics, finance, and high tech. She also married twice and had two children. In addition, she also did a lot of exploring of all that had been forbidden! And always...she wrote. In her 30's she found out that various male members of her family had been abusers within the church. This sent her on a decades-long discovery process: confronting family members and tracking down and speaking to the victims. She formed an unlikely bond with one of the victims, and this led her to uncover and address her own trauma from purity culture, the patriarchal stranglehold, and church abuse. The Glory Whole is the name of her instagram account which she refers to as “a work in progress that chronicles her story”. If you follow her, you will occasionally see excerpts from her memoir, which is in process. Naomi Van Winkle was born into a religious group (King's Chapel) in Connecticut which was essentially a Christian cult. The group had a female leader who was based at their headquarters in England (Mansfield Woodhouse) and dictated much of the community's ongoings as well as individual lives, with the use of fear & high pressure tactics to interrogate and manipulate. After many years and as part of her own healing journey of discovery and exploration, Naomi and others are telling their stories through a podcast series that Naomi created, called Cult in Connecticut. In it, Naomi shares about her experience of being born and raised in this cult, and the journey of healing from the pain and confusion she experienced growing up. At eighteen, Naomi left the church and everything she had ever known to begin a new life. We discuss her process of leaving, healing, experiencing life and much more! Naomi is also a Nashville creative artist and business owner! Janice Selbie was born and raised in a charismatic Christian home, attending Pentecostal, Vineyard, and other Evangelical churches before eventually marrying a man who would become a pastor. In her 30s she became ultraconservative, wearing a head-covering, homeschooling their children, and rejecting any vestiges of secular life ( including TV, radio, music, newspapers, magazines, etc.). “I referred to myself as ‘Mennocostal,' frequently attending closed Mennonite churches run by the Holdeman Mennonites.” It wasn't until her 40s that Janice began experiencing doubts about her deeply held faith. As her marriage unraveled, her questions grew. She found herself wondering about the impact of religion on sexuality, gender roles and equality, social justice, and more. “Not permitted to explore these questions, I felt like a beach ball held beneath the water for too long. My sadness, confusion, and anger threatened to explode if something didn't change.” After ending her decades-long marriage, Janice went back to school to attain her Diploma of Applied Psychology and Counseling. “My passion is to help others who are experiencing the multiple significant losses associated with religious de-conversion. My own journey could have been easier if I had been able to connect with even one other person who had walked away from their faith and built a healthy life afterward.” These painful experiences influenced Janice to develop the Divorcing Religion Workshop so that others could gain knowledge and tools to help with their own journey out of fundamentalist religions. In May of 2021, Janice hosted the inaugural on-line 'Conference on Religious Trauma' (CORT), with over 20 speakers providing education & insight into RTS & recovery. Kenneth Garrett is currently the senior pastor of Grace Church, located in Portland, OR. He is the founder of the Spiritual Abuse Forum for Education, and he is also a member of the advisory board of ICSA (International Cultic Studies Association). Ken and Sharon (his wife) have 3 daughters and four grandchildren whom they see often. Ken has written a book called, “In the House of Friends. Understanding and Healing from Spiritual Abuse in Christian Churches”. You will hear a little bit about the book during our discussion but if you'd like to know more, you can find the book at the Amazon link below. From 1984-1996, Ken and Sharon were part of an abusive church with a pastor who is still in an ongoing legal case. However, on January 23 2020, a jury found the pastor guilty of the sexual abuse of a minor, and sentenced him to 160 months without the possibility of parole. Ken's book is a wonderful preventative resource that I would recommend for all who are or want to be part of a church community. In addition, for those serving Christian communities, this is also an excellent resource for leadership. After the passing of both her parents in her early 20's, Kelly Alder joined a Neo Native American tribe, marrying its leader and becoming one of his many wives. Red Bear was the spirit name given to Kelly during a ceremony held by the tribe's founder, John Twobirds. She began writing her memoir about six years ago when a little voice started persistently nagging her to, “Write this crazy stuff down!” And so, she gave into this call, grabbing moments where she could in between the cooking, laundry and school runs. And now, to our benefit, she shares her story in this beautifully written memoir. Kelly has received many accolades for the book and also has a blog that you can find at her website where she writes about life experiences and the topics of femininity, vulnerability and belonging. This bonus episode features a super-informative discussion with Emily Elizabeth Anderson, who herself is a survivor of not only the Bill Gothard/ATI homeschooling cult, she also experienced grooming and abuses by Gothard personally. Emily is now on the journey of helping others deal with church abuse and other forms of traumas they may have suffered. She has become an activist speaking out against the toxicity of Gothard's cult and was actually part of the massive lawsuit against Gothard himself, launched by multiple women who were sexually harassed and assaulted by him. We not only discuss the recent Josh Duggar arrest situation, we conclude the conversation by evaluating the IBLP as a cult also. Find out more about Emily's work at her blog, Thriving Forward. This special bonus episode features returning guest, sociologist and cult expert, Dr Janja Lalich. I reached out to her once again to talk about the NXIVM cult and how specifically it worked from a cult psychology point of view. As someone who not only has been in a cult herself, but has also researched and written a tremendous amount of material about cults, Dr Lalich is an invaluable resource. In addition, she was also heavily involved in the trial and has been filmed for at least 2 documentaries about NXIVM. I think that not only will you find this episode fascinating about Raniere and NXIVM itself, as we describe cult psychology in general it will prove to be a helpful resource in terms of your own reconstruction--if you come out of controlling religions or groups with undue influence.
