Struggling with a lack of purpose and self-esteem, a 27-year-old Sarah Edmondson joined NXIVM after attending their five-day seminar. The self-help organization then morphed into a dangerous, high-control cult under the leadership of Keith Raniere, who presented himself as a genius mentor and philosopher. Rainiere led a secretive group within NXIVM, known as DOS which stands for “Dominus Obsequious Sororium.” In Latin, that phrase translates to “Master Over Slave Women.” Some members referred to their allegiance to the group as The Vow, and they engaged in shocking practices—most notoriously, the branding of women as part of a so-called "master-slave" hierarchy. You may have seen Edmonson's story unfold in the HBO documentary The Vow. Since then, Raniere has been convicted of racketeering and sex trafficking.
