Today, on Karl and Crew, we kicked off the week with discussions about a cancer patient ministry with Phil Zielke and how to make the most of a screen-free summer with your kids, with Arlene Pellicane. First, Phil Zielke joined us to share his testimony of how he drew near to God when he was diagnosed with Stage 4B Hodgkin’s Lymphoma, and then how God placed it on his heart to start a ministry that serves cancer patients. Phil’s Friends is a ministry that provides Christ-centered support and hope to those affected by cancer. Then we had Arlene Pellicane join us to talk about the importance of parents connecting with their children by limiting their screen time. Arlene is a speaker, author, and host of the Happy Home podcast. She is also a marriage and parenting expert. Arlene has also authored several books, including “Screen Kids.” We then discussed our need for God’s grace. We were born into sin, so it is in our nature to be sinful, but when we are born again through Christ, we are renewed by God’s grace. Romans 7:18-25 affirms this, as Paul tells us that sin dwells within us and affects how we move and think without God. Only God can deliver us from sin through Jesus Christ. We also heard updates from Karl, who was broadcasting remotely from the Maranatha Bible Missionary Conference, Vacation and Retreat Center. Dr. Josh Stephens joined Karl to discuss the sovereignty and providence of God as shown throughout the book of Ruth. Dr. Stephens is the Lead Pastor of Cape Bible Church in Missouri and is also the founder and executive director of the Biblical Counseling Alliance. Many of you have been asking me about my recent trip to a healing retreat center in the Peruvian Amazon, so in this episode I'm going to be sharing about my experience at the healing retreat center, why you may want to consider going to a retreat center or doing a detox or reset type program, and also why a person might consider using psychedelic plant medicines, such as Ayahuasca, as a way to support your healing process. This video is going to be helpful for you if you have tested positive for high-risk HPV virus and maybe abnormal cells on your cervix and potential risk of cervical cancer or vaginal cancer, or any other kind of cancer for that matter. This will also be helpful for those of you who are working to conceive a pregnancy and prevent a miscarriage, and those of you who are going through perimenopause and post-menopausal symptoms, weight gain, blood sugar issues, sleep problems, anxiety, depression, migraines, autoimmune conditions, and simply wanting to prevent other health issues like heart disease and dementia. So really, this information could be helpful for all of us humans to heal! I hope this gives you new hope and inspiration for your ability to heal. Don't give up – believe me, I've been at the very bottom. I've experienced all the edges of human reality. I've been through pain and suffering. I understand. You're not alone. Healing is possible. Spirituality became central to NiteshGor's life when, as a teenager, he founded a youth movement to campaign against the UK government's proposed forced closure of Bhaktivedanta Manor, a temple outside London that was purchased and gifted by George Harrison. Nitesh went on to create Avanti Schools Trust, a government-funded network of schools in the UK rooted in spirituality. He co-created the world's first equity index rooted in dharmic values, the Dow Jones Dharma Index, and now the Dharma Endowment Fund. He has helped establish numerous spiritual initiatives, from a 75-acre retreat centre in Lincolnshire to a vibrant restaurant and wellbeing hub in London. He has authored two books (Dharma of Capitalism, published in 2010 by Kogan Page, and Before Religion, being republished by Harper Collins in 2025) and received an OBE from the late Queen for his services to education. Welcome to "Retreats with a Purpose: How to Make a Difference While Making a Profit," where we delve into the compelling ways retreat leaders can weave social responsibility into their business models. This episode is dedicated to those who see the potential for retreats to serve not just as gateways to personal growth but as platforms for meaningful societal contributions. Partnering with Non-Profits First up, we explore the strategic partnerships between retreats and non-profits. Learn how aligning with a cause that resonates with your retreat's theme can amplify the impact on both your attendees and the non-profit's goals. For instance, a mindfulness retreat could partner with a mental health organization to deepen the impact through combined efforts in wellness promotion. These partnerships not only enrich the retreat experience but also extend the reach and effectiveness of the non-profit's mission. We'll share success stories, like a retreat that included conservation efforts, enhancing participant engagement and helping the local environment. Implementing Scholarship Programs Next, we discuss the transformational power of scholarship programs. Offering scholarships makes retreats accessible to those who might otherwise miss out on such life-changing opportunities. We'll cover how to set up a scholarship fund, including eligibility criteria and funding strategies. Success stories from scholarship recipients will highlight the profound impact these opportunities can have on individuals and their communities, showcasing the ripple effect of generosity. Sourcing Locally and Ethically Our third segment focuses on the importance of local and ethical sourcing. This practice not only supports local economies but also ensures that retreats offer authentic and sustainable experiences. We'll talk about how to choose local vendors and ethical suppliers that align with your retreat's values, and share case studies that demonstrate the positive effects of these choices on both the retreat experience and local communities. Community Service Activities Integrating community service into retreat programs can profoundly enrich the retreat experience, turning a simple getaway into a deeply fulfilling journey. We'll explore different types of service activities that fit various retreat themes, such as environmental initiatives or educational programs. Feedback from both participants and local communities will highlight the mutual benefits of these integrations. Financial Donations Lastly, we'll tackle the role of financial donations in enhancing retreat appeal and impact. Allocating a portion of profits to charitable causes not only supports community projects but also positions your retreat as a socially responsible choice for potential attendees. We'll discuss effective strategies for marketing this aspect and share examples of how these donations have made lasting impacts. This episode is packed with insights from fellow retreat leaders who have successfully integrated these socially responsible practices into their operations, proving that it's possible to make a profit while making a difference. Recipe - Pistachio Shortbread Cookies Dipped in White Chocolate: 2 sticks of butter, room temp 1/2 cup granulated sugar 2 cups GF all-purpose flour 1 cup pistachios, chopped & without shells 4oz white chocolate (for dipping) Add the sugar and beat together with the butter. Just beat until combined and no more, we don't want to incorporate any air here. Add the flour and mix until it starts to form clumps and looks like large chunky breadcrumbs. Ditch the spoon and use your hands to bring it together into a smooth dough. Roughly chop the pistachios and add ⅔ of them into the shortbread dough. Reserve the other third of them to sprinkle on top later. Use your hands to knead the pistachios into the dough so they are evenly dispersed. Don't overwork the dough. Shape the dough into a log shape, and chill in the fridge for an hour. Bake on a cookie sheet with parchment paper for 12-18 mins at 350 degrees. While they're baking, melt the white chocolate and then dip the cookies about half way once they're cooled. Immediately sprinkle with the leftover pistachios you reserved earlier. Let them set (about 5-10 mins), and enjoy! Be sure to leave us a review and share with your friends. Thank you for listening!

In this episode, Erica Zelfand, ND joins to discuss the important topic of pill shaming in psychedelic communities and how psychedelic medicine and traditional pharmaceuticals can both support healing. Dr. Erica Zelfand specializes in integrative mental health, bridging the gaps between conventional and alternative medicine. In addition to seeing patients in private practice, she also teaches facilitation internationally and leads retreats through Right to Heal. In this conversation, Dr. Zelfand tackles the issue of pill shaming in psychedelic communities, showing why this rhetoric falls short and ultimately harms patients. She discusses complementary roles for psychedelic and traditional pharmaceutical medicines, suggesting that a medicine like ketamine may be particularly effective in contexts of acute intervention, whereas an SSRI antidepressant may be most effective for maintenance. Dr. Zelfand notes, however, that drug-drug interactions can be a significant concern and stresses the need for medical expertise and supervision in the context of concomitant usage of pharmaceuticals and psychedelics. In closing, she emphasizes that what is ultimately important is that patients are able to progress in healing, and any tools that are able to safely and effectively support this goal have an important role to play and should not be denigrated. In this episode you'll hear: The pill shaming rhetoric in psychedelic and cannabis communities Pharmaceutical contraindications to psychedelic therapy and the necessity of medical supervision for tapering off such medications Why comparing traditional antidepressant pharmaceuticals to psychedelic medicines is often an apples to oranges comparison The issues with “no pain, no gain” rhetoric in healing Psychiatric support for processing repressed memories uncovered during psychedelic journeys Quotes: “When I went into medicine, I actually specifically went into integrative medicine, functional medicine, because I didn't like that patients were being in this position of having to choose: the conventional route or the alternative medicine route. Both routes have their merits and both routes have their shortcomings and I felt like we all deserve to be able to access both and have it be an integrated model.” [3:06] “The only form of ketamine that is FDA approved for depression—which is Spravato—is only approved in the context in which the person is also taking an oral antidepressant.” [20:48] “We have data showing that if you feel really really freaked out and anxious during your [psychedelic] trip, your outcomes aren't necessarily as good. And the biggest predictor of having a positive experience is actually feeling awe. You don't have to do the ego death thing, but if you can feel awe, if you can feel inspiration during a trip, your outcomes are better. And there's even data showing that individuals who are on an SSRI and then trip—they may actually have better outcomes than people who don't take medication.” [24:12] “I think part of this trepidation is we don't want to harm anybody through a dangerous, or potentially lethal, drug-drug interaction. That's one thing. It's another thing to be like ‘yeah but if you're using these [pharmaceutical] drugs you're doing it wrong and you're not healing right.' And I think the one often is used as a camouflage for the other—and they're two separate things.” [38:59] Links: Dr. Zelfan's website Dr. Zelfand on Instagram Dr. Zelfand on Twitter Dr. Zelfan on LinkedIn Right to Heal website Psychedelic pill-shaming article by Jules Evans and Shayam Suseelan Previous episode: Integrating Challenging Psychedelic Experiences with Keith Kurlander, MA Previous episode: Warning Signs When Selecting a Psychedelic Facilitator with Juliana Mulligan Previous episode: How to Choose a Psychedelic Facilitator or Retreat Center with Joël Brierre Psychedelic Medicine Association Porangui

In today's fast-paced world, rest is often mistaken for simply lying on a beach with a cocktail in hand. But what if rest could mean something deeper, a true rejuvenation that touches the soul, leaving you transformed? This question finds its answer in the story of Roberto Laurens, owner of Pacha Munay Retreat Center in Peru.Roberto Laurens' journey is anything but conventional. Born in Colombia, he moved to Massachusetts and embarked on a life filled with spiritual exploration and entrepreneurship. Following a significant health crisis and profound spiritual experiences, Roberto found himself at a crossroads that led him to the heart of Peru.It was a series of synchronicities—the calling of Peru that Roberto could not ignore. Post-surgery, seeking healing, he found himself in the jungles of the Amazon managing an ayahuasca retreat center. Here, Roberto learned invaluable lessons on the benefits and pitfalls of plant medicine, highlighting the importance of integration over the mere experience of spiritual highs. In a world obsessed with bucket lists and itineraries, Roberto emphasizes the balance between exploration and inner work. The retreat nurtures this balance, encouraging guests to view travel not as an escape but as a profound opportunity for personal development. When you next plan your travels, consider the potential for transformation that lies beyond sightseeing. Embrace the opportunity to rest, rejuvenate, and return home with a newfound clarity and sense of purpose. Is self-care worldly and selfish or biblical? Listen in as biblical counselor Kim Day gives a biblical perspective on this topic. Self-care is not just a worldly trend; it is the stewardship of our minds, bodies, and souls, so that we can be and do all that God has for us. We must be poured into in order to pour out. In this episode of the Psychedelic Medicine Podcast, Star Rose Bond, LCSW joins to discuss the topic of using psychedelic-assisted therapy to address intergenerational trauma. As seen in Huffpost, Vice and Psychology Today, Star Rose is a Renegade Psychotherapist, Social Activist, Clinical Supervisor for PEARL Institute and Co-Founder of Life Camp. With a Bachelor's degree from NYU and a master's from Columbia, Star brings 15 years of clinical trauma therapeutic services and experience serving marginalized, under-resourced and at risk populations specializing in harm reduction and PTSD recovery. In this conversation, Star introduces the topic of intergenerational trauma and explores how psychedelic experiences may be leveraged to address this pernicious condition. She begins by explaining what intergenerational trauma means, how it gets passed down, and how it manifests. Star talks about the importance of psychedelic therapists and facilitators having awareness of trauma-informed modalities in order to better serve these populations. She also discusses the complexities of addressing generational trauma, and how it can often be difficult to process sensitive topics within the family unit. However, in conclusion, Star emphasizes that the capacity to heal is an intrinsic aspect of human existence, and that even in particularly dark moments, it is possible to get in touch with this possibility. In this episode you'll hear: How the conditions of Capitalism produce and exacerbate chronic stress The profound impact of neglect and abuse in early childhood The unique experience of intergenerational trauma for BIPOC peoples and the recent rekindling of a spirit of connection in these communities due to psychedelic medicines How processing intergenerational trauma can transform familial relationships Ethical and practical considerations for facilitators and therapists guiding clients through psychedelic experiences aimed at resolving deep-seated trauma What to look for in a psychedelic-assisted therapist or facilitator Quotes: “Just because you have several students or several clients who've experienced the same trauma, don't make the assumption that they're all experiencing it the same way. Or maybe you'll meet a client who has had trauma similar to yours—don't assume that they have undergone the same emotional impact or psychological impact as you. The truth of the matter is we are complex beings. We have so many different moving variables that go into our psychology and that essentially indicate or play a role in how we respond to things.” [8:43] “We can't always express or understand why things happen the way they do. But, we can start to make meaning through a spiritual understanding which in turn lends itself to a sense of ease and comfort.” [22:20] “When you are going into these experiences as a facilitator—whatever your background is—it is of the utmost importance that you are hyper cognizant and hyper aware of the harms that can be caused by not being aware of the ways in which you can navigate someone else's trauma as it shows up.” [25:02] Links: Star's website Star on Instagram Previous episode: Can Your Genes Predict Response to MDMA Therapy? with Dr. Dave Rabin MD, PhD Previous episode: Warning Signs When Selecting a Psychedelic Facilitator with Juliana Mulligan Previous episode: How to Choose a Psychedelic Facilitator or Retreat Center with Joël Brierre My Grandmother's Hands: Racialized Trauma and the Pathway to Mending Our Hearts and Bodies by Resmaa Menakem SHINE Support website Psychedelic Medicine Association Porangui
