Ransomware attacks continue to pose a significant threat across various sectors, with recent incidents targeting critical industries and causing substantial financial and operational damages. Federal authorities have issued warnings about a surge in cyberattacks exploiting a high-severity vulnerability in Veeam software that enables unauthorized access and raises the risk of data heft and ransomware deployment. With healthcare organizations heavily reliant on Veeam software for data protection, the implications of these attacks are particularly concerning. But the impact of ransomware attacks extends beyond healthcare, as demonstrated by recent incidents faced by companies like Dole, which incurred $10.5 million in direct costs following a ransomware attack, and the ongoing attack on the Dallas Municipal Court Building, disrupting legal proceedings and potentially exposing sensitive personal and case-related information. According to Curtis Preston, Chief Technical Evangelist at Druva, cyberattacks are not a matter of "if," but "when." In this episode, Tom Fox. and Curtis dive into the importance of backup systems and cyber resilience to protect against ransomware and other types of cyberattacks. Curtis shares his insights on how to limit the blast radius of an attack, why you should assume a breach, and the need to have a playbook and a cyber response team in place. They also discuss the role of state-sponsored attacks in non-kinetic warfare and the need for increased cyber resilience as we approach 2030. W. Curtis Preston has 30 years of experience in the backup and data protection industry. He started his career at MBNA, the second-largest credit card company in 1993, and has been specializing in backup servers ever since. He is currently the Chief Technical Evangelist at Druva, where he talks, writes, and hosts podcasts about data protection systems. Curtis is also known as ‘Mr. Backup', a moniker that he adopted while writing his first book on backups. You'll hear Tom and Curtis discuss: SaaS-based data protection systems are becoming increasingly important as more companies rely on SaaS infrastructures like Microsoft 365 and Google Workspace. Companies should not count on these providers to protect their data; they should consider using SaaS-based backup systems instead. Curtis tells Tom, “There should be security interest, as well as technical and storage and network interest. All of those interests should be reflected in the implementation of such an important system as a data protection system.” Ransomware attackers are now targeting backup systems directly, making it crucial for companies to modernize the security infrastructure of their backup systems. They can do this by using SaaS-based systems that come with modern security features such as multi-factor authentication, triggers and alerts, and the concept of least privilege. The inefficiencies and difficulties of a typical on-premises backup infrastructure, such as overbuilding and overengineering, can be solved by using a SaaS-based system where companies only pay for what they are actually using. Fire drills, or ransomware drills, can help companies develop “muscle memory” and test their incident response playbook before an actual attack occurs. Role-based administration is important to limit the blast radius in case an administrator's account is compromised. Each person involved in the backup process should have specific roles and responsibilities. State-sponsored attacks on American businesses, especially from Russia, are increasing. It's important to beef up defenses, assume breaches, and have a playbook ready to respond to ransomware attacks. By 2030, cyber resilience and protection topics will increase as people become more aware of cyberattacks. Passwords will be a thing of the past, and people will have to live in a world of constant cyberattacks. KEY QUOTES: "Today, I think the average user is so used to equipment that just works, they don't really think as much about backup and recovery, I think, as we did back in the day." - Curtis Preston "By the way, I do think by 2030, passwords will be a thing of the past." - Curtis Preston "It's also having a robust backup plan in place with sufficient security protocols and that when you are attacked, not if when you are attacked, they can't take your star player out, and if it all does go down, you have a way to at least build back." - Curtis Preston Resources: Curtis Preston on LinkedIn | Twitter Backup Central | Druva

Historically, backup and recovery has been a job relegated to a junior person on the team. It's the kind of grungy work that all companies know they should do, but no one wants to own it. As such, many companies have a poor backup and recovery posture and aren't even sure they can recover from a disaster. Additionally, in recent years, homegrown backup systems have been the target of more and more ransomware and cyber attacks. Attackers target the backups, either deleting them completely and then attacking other parts of the system or steal the backups, break the encryption, and now have access to tons of company data. W. Curtis Preston has been working in backup and disaster recovery for nearly 30 years and has written five books on the subject. The biggest mistake companies make is not having a suitable disaster recovery plan in place. With the increase of cyberthreats, how are backup and recovery techniques rising to the challenge?   Today's guest is W. Curtis Preston, the Chief Technical Evangelist at the data protection and management provider Druva. Also known in the industry as “Mr. Backup,” Curtis' nearly 30 years of experience working in backup and recovery make him one of the foremost experts in the field.   On this episode of Future of Tech, Curtis talks in depth about the evolution of backup technology over the years and sheds light on what new challenges have arisen in the era of virtualization.   He also offers some candid advice to anyone interested in entering the backup industry, and it may not be what you'd expect. Enjoy the episode.    Main Takeaways: The History of Backup: Drawing from nearly 30 years of experience, Curtis outlines the evolution of backup technology – from “tape” to the cloud – and the challenges that have arisen along the way. Though the industry has changed over the course of his career, he suggests that the challenging nature of the work has always been consistent.  The New Cyberattack Threat: Curtis describes that before the cloud, the damage to data centers was caused by temporary threats like fires, floods, and hurricanes. He explains that with the advent of the cloud came a new industry foe: cyberattackers. He asserts that containing cyber threats can be difficult because they persist throughout the recovery process. Despite cyber threats, Curtis insists that “virtualization and cloud both have allowed us to make all compute much more available [and] much more resilient in general than it was when I joined the industry.”  The Future of the Backup Business: According to Curtis, advancements in backup technology and design have lowered the demand for specialists in the field. He suggests that those interested in entering the industry should aim their attention toward “the cybersecurity element” which, he claims, “is going to be nothing but a growth industry.”   Key Quotes: [07:31] “The problem the last year or two has been cyberattacks specifically against backups. Historically, ‘backups' was in the corner and nobody really thought about it, and certainly neither did the cyberattacker. Cyberattackers are not new, but the idea of someone in the cyberspace directly targeting your backups to either use them to steal data, to exfiltrate data and use it to attack your company, to hold your data for ransom in that way, or to encrypt them in the same way that they encrypt the primary so that you then have to pay the ransom [is].” [21:04] “The idea that you could have an RTO – a recovery time objective – of 20 minutes for thousands of VMs is, I think, phenomenal… When you go back… I was at a bank with, I'm going to say, we had like four or five hundred servers. The idea of recovering those four or five hundred servers in anything less than a couple of weeks would be unheard of. Now, if all those servers are virtualized using the cloud and advanced technology, you can recover your entire environment in 15 to 20 minutes and only lose about an hour's worth of data.” [23:25] “Let's go back to... [the year] 2000… I'd been in IT for seven years at this point. What we thought about was hurricanes and floods and earthquakes and fires. What all of those have in common is [that] when the event has destroyed your data center, the thing that destroyed your data center is now gone. The fire has been put out, the flood has receded, the hurricane has moved on, et cetera. With a cyber recovery, that isn't the case. You need to recover your data center in the middle of the hurricane. The hurricane is still hitting your data center, meaning… the cyber attack is ongoing.” [26:38] “I will take the security of the average cloud vendor or the average SaaS vendor over the security of the average data center any day of the week. I'm not saying you can't have better security or good security in a data center. I'm just saying that for the cloud it's do-or-die. If they don't have a solid cybersecurity plan, they basically go out of business.” [40:29] “What has driven the backup design, I'd say more than anything, is that the things that we're backing up keep changing… So, that's why I'm saying VMware messed it up, the cloud, messed it up, [and] the latest thing to mess things up has been Kubernetes and containers… That again turned backup on its head and everybody's playing catch-up.”

Backup – what does it have to do with protecting data privacy? And how does a backup service work? What should businesses and individuals know about backing up their digital data? On one hand, a backup of data provides a second target for data thieves. Not properly handled, backups can increase privacy risks. They then give an overview of large privacy regulations, such as GDPR and CCPA, as well as some discussion on the upcoming implementation of CPRA, the update to CCPA. Finally, they discuss how all of this impacts an organization's data resiliency efforts, or how data protection can help positively impact an organization's attempts to be compliant to these various regulations. Finally, Stephen discusses a very valid point about how you should attempt to comply with these regulations even if you're not subject them.Mentioned in this episode:Free eBook copy of Modern Data ProtectionYou can get a free eBook copy of Modern Data Protection by going to druva.com/podcast.

Stephen Manley and W. Curtis Preston discuss whether or not data protection is the silver bullet to stop all ransomware. Short answer: no, it's not. We start by discussing another podcast that suggested backup vendors think we are the solution to ransomware. We don't. Then we delve into why we do think backup and DR are an important part of defending against ransomware. We also discuss whether we think they are more important than some of the other tools. We then cover some of the things Druva has done to specifically target ransomware. We also talk about ransomware attacks where backup can't help, as well as discussing other tools you should have. We conclude with a “last dollar” question: if you only had $1 left; do you spend it on backup or user training? I'll bet you know how both hosts answered.

We talk about how he feels that cloud the cloud has (or has not) lived up to its reputation, including areas where the cloud has gotten better – and even a few where it has gotten worse. We talk about how people's roles have changed, as the cloud is quite different than a datacenter. Finally, we round out the conversation talking about how companies can help their people transition to a world that is become increasingly cloud-centric.

We then discuss the idea of data-centric security (vs the traditional datacenter-centric model), and what that actually means.
