Welcome to Twice 5 Miles Radio. I'm your host, James Navé, (www.jamesnave.com). Today, I'm joined by writing coach and author Cynthia Morris (www.originalimpulse.com). Cynthia's mission is to empower writers—especially those who feel time or self-doubt working against them—to craft books that make an impact. I've been receiving newsletters from Cynthia for some time and recently decided to reach out to learn more about what she's up to. I was particularly interested in touching base with her because she teaches writing workshops in Paris. I've been visiting Paris for many years and teaching writing workshops there, so it was a natural curiosity to follow up with an email. We dove right into the idea of world-changing means. Cynthia's perspective is refreshingly grounded: everything we do changes the world somehow, and the more you commit to what you do, the more meaningful your influence becomes—starting small and rippling outward into the larger world. Cynthia explains why it's essential to embrace your creative instincts and how to overcome the "monsters at the gate"—the fear of failure, irrelevance, or imperfection. With her workshops in Paris as a backdrop, Cynthia shares tools for building a writing life that's joyful, disciplined, and aligned with your deeper values. For anyone longing to write but unsure where to begin, this episode offers practical tips, compassionate insights, and encouragement to take your next creative writing steps. Let's get started—your book is waiting. Enjoy the show. Twice 5 Miles Radio is sponsored by The Imaginative Storm Writing Project (www.ImaginativeStorm.com).

You might have gone to summer camp as a kid. If you loved it, you likely have wonderful memories of making new friends, being in nature, staying in cabins with bunkmates, doing crafts, swimming at the lake (pool, pond, river), singing around the campfire and maybe even showing off a special skill of yours at the talent show. Author of eight books now, Cynthia Morris joins Charlie for a second time to talk about her new book, The Busy Woman’s Guide to Writing a World-Changing Book. She and Charlie talk about how writing a book is empowering, why busy women have different challenges with writing books that are often overlooked, plus the top three challenges people face when it’s time to start writing their book. Key Takeaways: [2:00] - Part of Cynthia’s work is coaching writers, and through this, she witnessed many of her students’ profound moments. Her hunger for helping other people experience this urged her to write this book for them. Being able to share stories helps to normalize the playing field for authors facing similar challenges. [6:00] - In her teaching, Cynthia seeks to help people craft a writing practice that is consistent and sustainable for them over time. [7:40] - Her new book is geared toward women because that is the audience she knows. The book is concise and to the point, and also considers the schedule of women who run their households, have jobs, or maybe run a business. Cynthia also hopes this will help women reclaim their power. [10:40] - Writing a book helps you reclaim power because you’re saying that you matter, your idea matters, and your book matters. You start gaining confidence as you hit your stride, and you start to own the integrity of doing what you said you would do. The works we make work us; we are made by what we make. [14:20] - Cynthia shares the top three challenges people face when writing a book. 1) People stay in the planning time for a long time before they’re ready to start. While this is an exciting stage, it’s easy to get stuck here. Dive in and go forward even if you don’t know everything. 2) Do your best to thrive in the discomfort of pulling your ideas together. 3) Make time, focus, and space to write. Maybe you need to remove something from your schedule to make that space. [18:00] - Speaking to the last point, Charlie talks about making writing a project. You may have to displace something else to give your book the time it needs. It’s not just physical space, but also emotional and mental space. You can also add in elements of project management. [21:30] - How you react when you face some of the challenges is what defines you as a person and a writer. When the challenges arise, you can choose if you want to let them get you down or power through. You might learn things about yourself you didn’t know before. [25:30] - A large part of Cynthia’s coaching focuses on who you are and how you are in the world.. Are you of a growth mindset or a fixed mindset? Sometimes we don’t want to take on projects because they will reveal things we’d rather not face. Projects can be a mirror and a bridge. [27:30] - Another challenge about writing, or art making in general, is you have to really care about the subject. You need a deep motivation, but on the other hand, the risks can become higher because it’s so important to you. Keep yourself grounded by seeking the benefits for yourself throughout the process. [30:05] - Writing itself is a slow medium; there is a lot involved in carving out what you want to say. Some people may write quicker than others, but it’s okay if it takes you time, not just to write, but also to achieve the success you want to achieve. Show up to do what you can and the rest will come. [35:55] - There’s no way to learn how to write a book without doing it. It’s humbling when people share their challenges and how they’ve overcome them through their own process. [37:45] - There is explanatory and exploratory writing. In explanatory writing, you just need to figure out how to explain what you already know. In exploratory writing, you often don’t know what you think or haven’t figured it out yet, and as you write, you work through that. Writing can reveal so much to us, and often we are the ones getting in our own way. If you want to write a book, try it! There is so much to learn from the process. [41:15] - There is always room for more writers. The first world that’s going to change when you write is your own; when your world changes, it will ripple out. [42:00] - Cynthia’s invitation is to do a free-write. Take 10 or 15 minutes to write on the prompt “I must write this book because…” and that will reveal to you what’s important to you in writing this book, or it might be a realization that it’s not as important to you and will free you up for other things. What would it be like to pack up your art supplies and live in an entirely new country? Today’s guest, Marcus McAllister, left the United States over 20 years ago to live in Paris, and has been making a living as an artist there for the past 17 years. In this episode, Marcus talks about his decision to live abroad, his sketchbooks, the sources of his income, and the importance of relationships.   In this interview, you will hear about: How Marcus has been scrappy yet intentional about his business and career. His sketchbooks (and why he doesn’t even walk the dog without taking one with him). Marcus’s first memories of living on an Army base in Little Rock, Arkansas. How Marcus ended up in Paris and transitioned to a full time artist, and the transition within his career to getting there. The way Marcus overcame the language barrier and presented himself as an artist to find work. Why Marcus thinks it’s hard for artists to call themselves artists, and why it’s important for artists to own that title. The dedication Marcus has to always having a sketchbook on him, with over 100 now in his possession. The different sources of income Marcus has including original work, mentoring, and hosting workshops. How Marcus keeps his expenses minimal, and is open to be vulnerable and authentic when times are financially tough. The connection between creativity, struggle, and doubt. Marcus’s go-to marketing methods and how he promotes his shows. The important connections Marcus has made through his relationships over the years, and why he thinks all artists would benefit from spending more time cultivating relationships. How Marcus makes the initial contact when networking, and how he follows up and stays in touch. His tradition of Sunday teas in the studio and the importance of listening to your gut and knowing when it’s time to evolve and shift into something new. How working as an artist can involve a lot of solitude, and Marcus’s advice to artists who aren’t as gregarious as he is. Etiquette for networking at events as an artist, and why you shouldn’t be afraid to let those business cards fly.   Resources: Marcus McAllister http://www.marcusmcallister.com/ Marcus’s Instagram https://www.instagram.com/ateliermarcus.mcallister/ Video Interview with Cynthia Morris https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zz5P1Wqpl7o Marcus’s Journals on Video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_ZOZ6jVWCT4 Show notes and comments https://artbizsuccess.com/mcallister-paris-podcast

This week on StoryWeb: Cynthia Morris’s novel, Chasing Sylvia Beach. What do you get when you combine time travel, intriguing literary history, Paris, and romance? Why, Cynthia Morris’s novel, Chasing Sylvia Beach, of course! I know Cynthia from participating regularly in what she previously called Free Write Flings, month-long excursions that have “flingers” writing freely for fifteen minutes each day in response to various “prompts.” I’ve dipped into Cynthia’s Free Write Flings twice a year for the last several years – every October and February – to generate ideas for StoryWeb. Go behind the scenes with us to see how it works at Beth Hayden’s website. Note that Cynthia has just launched a new version of this month-long experience. It’s called The Devoted Writer. Cynthia is a well-known and expert writing and creativity coach. Through her business, Original Impulse, she offers online workshops, individual coaching, books to help your creative practice, and travel opportunities. Based in Denver, Cynthia leads courses in Paris quite often, leading other creative spirits through the streets of her favorite city as they create illustrated journals. But Cynthia is very much a writer in her own right. Can’t travel to Paris with Cynthia? No worries. You can get an intimate look at the City of Light through Cynthia’s 2012 novel, Chasing Sylvia Beach. Sylvia Beach was, of course, the owner of the famed Parisian bookstore, Shakespeare and Company. Cynthia makes Beach’s 1930s Paris accessible to us nearly a century later with the magical twists and turns of highly delightful time travel. When Denver bookstore clerk Lily Heller visits Paris in the present day, she’s captivated by the history of the city, especially all the literary lore. She imagines all of the ex-pat Americans writing and mingling on the Left Bank, often at Shakespeare and Company. How perfect, then, when Lily slips through a crack in time and finds herself in the 1930s Paris she’s been dreaming of. As she clatters around Paris on her bicycle, we hold our breath with her as she encounters one amazing historical person after another and let it out again when she lands a job at Sylvia Beach’s bookstore. Before long, Lily’s got a romance on her hands with Paul and a mentor in Sylvia Beach. Will she ever want to step back through the crack in time and return to her life in twenty-first century Denver? You’ll have to read Chasing Sylvia Beach to find out where Lily’s adventures lead her. As you join her on the streets of Paris, you’ll feel like you’ve been transported back in time as well. Learn more about Sylvia Beach at the Shakespeare and Company website. You can also learn why Cynthia has been obsessed with Sylvia Beach for years – be sure to check out the video of Cynthia talking about Beach! And if you’re an aspiring or experienced writer, artist, or some other kind of creative spirit, consider joining Cynthia for one of her many offerings. Visit Amazon to buy your own copy of Chasing Sylvia Beach or stop in at Cynthia’s online shop and the Original Impulse library for resources that will nurture your creative life. Cynthia Morris is an author, illustrator, and the creator Original Impulse. She has turned many of her ideas to reality from completing a novel to running creativity workshops in Paris. In this episode, Cynthia talks about the struggles of a creative life, listening to your inner artist, and the need to create our own stories. Here are three things you can learn from Cynthia: The Creative Life Isn’t Easy Even though Cynthia has achieved many things in her creative career, that doesn’t mean it’s been easy. Just because she enjoys creating doesn’t mean the creative life is easy. She believes putting things out into the world “involves an enormous perceived risk.” It has a very specific effect on our nervous systems and our psyches, and the only way to withstand that is to have a “commitment to your ultimate end goal.” There are so many important factors that go into your creative work. There are the time and money commitments. There’s the possibility that your work may amount to nothing. Everything is a crap shoot. “You have no idea. It’s crazy. It’s ludicrous to make things.” The mistake many creatives make is trying to do it all on their own. Many of us have fallen into the myth of the lone creative genius. If you want a successful creative career you need allies, peers, and mentors to help you. Creating should not be a solo adventure. Let Your Creative Self Lead Often times, we are so concerned about what need to accomplish and how we need to accomplish it, that we don’t pay attention to what our creative self is telling us. Cynthia thinks we all need to stop worrying about everything and just “let your artist lead.” There are times we got so caught up in the daily grind that we don’t listen to that inner voice. Sometimes we just need to let her be in charge. We need to get lost. We need to make bad decsions. We need to indulge in the part of us that is “oriented toward play and creativity and isn’t always practical in doing the right thing.” It is those times that we let go that we can be our most creative self. We need that time to explore the world. “There’s so much value in free space.” That is why Cynthia tries to teach people to make space in their schedule. Stop packing every day with a ton of stuff. “If you don’t have space, you don’t have any way to create or be creative.” Create Your Own Story We live in such a great time. There’s so much information available to us. There are enough resources and advice to keep us busy forever. And that’s why it’s also a problem. We are consuming too much. We are listening to too many voices. Cynthia believes the biggest challenge a creative person faces is battling all that noise. We become too occupied with what others are doing and accomplishing that we forget to listen to ourselves. We need to “learn how to develop a direct channel” to our own original impulse. We need to learn to listen to our own voice. We need to figure out what we want to say and what we want to make. We need to temper other people’s stories with our own story and our own drive. We need to “develop a relationship with that deep inner voice” within ourselves. Start living your own story instead of trying to mimic or live someone else’s. "The creative act is surrendering to not knowing."There's this scene I have etched in my mind. This week's guest, Cynthia Morris is dancing around a fire in Costa Rica, giggling mercilessly, utterly at home in her playfulness as another friend plays guitar and belts out 80s hits. In that moment, she's the person I wish I could let go enough to be on my best days. Yet, for Cynthia, it's simply who she is. Every day.Beyond an alluring level of ease with her essence, Cynthia is also a gifted writer's coach and creativity coach, a multi-time author, both fiction and nonfiction, an international workshop facilitator and, more recently, she's taking her seat as an illustrator. What started as her own personal process for visual note-taking as she traveled and learned turned into a form of arresting artistic expression. Her main canvas was the little-known accordion Moleskine journals. And it's led to not only a burgeoning career illustrating, but also her powerful Capture the Wow process, which she teaches in workshops around the world.Cynthia's energy and viewpoint on trusting the creative process are profound. We discuss how she found her way through her varied creative pursuits, how she crafted a fulfilling career out of them, and how she's built a very real living traveling, creating, laughing, teaching and speaking French. This episode is for everyone who wants to be an artist but thinks they don't have it in them, or they could never make a living doing it.Annnnnd...Cynthia will be with us at Camp GLP this summer, so be sure to grab your spot and come camp with us!Links we mention:Original Impulsecooljobs.comRolf Potts - VagabondingCynthia's novel Chasing Sylvia BeachLisa CongdonTim FerrissFollow Cynthia:Website | Instagram | Facebook | Twitter"True power is our resourcefulness."
