Abby and Alan discuss the horrifying and very real dancing plague of 1518. In the French Town of Strasbourg, in the summer of 1518, a bizarre and horrifying plague took as many as 400 lives. The plague started with a single woman, who could not stop dancing. Almost for an entire week she danced alone until others slowly joined her. Buckle up for a time warp! Dr. Roger McFillin and Sean revisit a January 21, 2022 episode, adding fresh insights and perspectives along the way.—-------Throughout history there are examples of communities, regions and even entire countries acting irrationally towards a perceived adversary. And sometimes that “adversary” is not a physical presence, but simply an idea, or the threat of an occurrence. Examples such as the Salem Witch Trials, the Dancing Mania, and Nazi Germany often leave us asking the question, “How did this happen?”The phenomenon of Mass Formation Psychosis has been applied as a possible explanation. In September 2021, a professor of clinical psychology at Ghent University in Belgium suggested Mass Formation as a possible explanation for the global response around the Covid pandemic. At the start of January 2022, Dr. Robert Malone shared this topic on the Joe Rogan Podcast, effectively becoming the most memorable part of their 3 hour conversation. Thus the need for more education on this psychological phenomenon. On today's podcast Roger, Kelly and Sean discuss Mass Formation Psychosis. In the summer of 1518, one of the most bizarre afflictions in history struck the city of Strasburg; dancing mania. This epidemic of dancing spread, almost like a plague, through the population with many hundreds of people dancing wildly and seemingly uncontrollably often to the point of collapse and even death. Perhaps, even stranger is that the outbreak in Strasbourg is far from the only recorded incidence of this phenomenon. But what caused it? To help delve into this fascinating subject Dan is joined by Dr John Waller, Associate Professor of the History of Medicine and author of A Time to Dance, a Time to Die: The Extraordinary Story of the Dancing Plague of 1518. John explains the atmosphere of fear and tension in Strasbourg in which the dancing mania took hold and how the power of superstition and belief can take the human mind and body in almost unbelievable directions. ‘Dancing Mania' - in which people spontaneously danced to exhaustion, some until they broke their ribs and subsequently died, took hold of Aachen, Germany on 24th June, 1374.We still don't really know why. Had the victims ingested ergot, a mould from rye bread that can inspire hallucinations? Was it a hysterical mass response to a stressful and traumatic environment? Or a kind of pre-smartphone flashmob? In this episode, Arion, Rebecca and Olly consider the likely causes and cures for this curious episode, learn about the equally extraordinary phenomenon of Tarantism, and play ‘guess the Saintly disease'... In medieval Strasbourg, during a period of unimaginable suffering and poverty, a mania took hold. Infected people were gripped by the compulsion to dance in the streets until they dropped senseless from exhaustion - or died. When the strange illness began to spread, the city took a series of steps to help the afflicted, culminating in a thirty-mile trek to seek the intervention of an obscure saint who may or may not have been angry at the city's sinful lifestyle. On this episode, we look at the time period leading up to the dancing plague, possible causes, how it spread, what the cure looked like (it came with a free pair of red shoes!) and what made this event so much worse than similar ones across the late Middle Ages. About 1.5 miles off the shores of San Francisco, California lies a rocky island with the infamous name "Alcatraz." Some of the most notorious criminals in American history were sent to a prison built on the island that bears the same name because of the impossibility of escape. But long before the likes of Al Capone, Machine Gun Kelly and Robert "Birdman" Stroud came to the island affectionately nicknamed "The Rock," the island housed a light house and a military prison. Many desperate souls wiled away their lives on Alcatraz Island and many of those souls seemed to have stayed. Those souls include not only prisoners, but banished Native Americans. Some claim a portal exists on the island. Come with us across the cold waters of the San Francisco Bay as we explore the history and hauntings of Alcatraz. The Moment in Oddity features Dancing Mania and This Day in History features the St. Hilaire Train Disaster.
