That's how you tell if you ever want to know the difference between, like, a really good leader and a not so good leader, watch them when things are not going well for them." — David Armano [00:17:05 → 00:17:20] On Navigating Career Changes: "I think it's a healthy experience to go through, to go through a crisis of some kind in your life, and it sucks when it happens to you and you're suddenly without an employer or without a lifeline or without a safety net or whatever motivates you." — Dan Nestle [00:17:54 → 00:18:10] On Grief and Growth: "Grief is both ugly and beautiful. It's ugly in the sense that it's painful... But there's a lot of gifts that do come with grieving." — David Armano [00:20:59 → 00:22:20] On Ageism in the Workplace: "Age is actually sort of, you know, in most white collar cultures, it's something they kind of want to stay away from because of everything that we're talking about, because it's the one acceptable ism in the world of white collar work." — David Armano [00:28:31 → 00:28:45] On the Evolution of Work: "The thing is, though, that there are so many, there's so much happening around us now that I think that the nature of work and the nature of this framework that almost all of corporate America at least functions within, which is that you age out, it's got to change, and it's changing in some places, but it really needs to change." — Dan Nestle [00:31:38 → 00:31:54] On AI and Entry-Level Work: "AI does what likes, like someone coming into the workforce with no experience or very little experience. The tasks that you would give to those employees is what AI excels at." — David Armano [00:35:20 → 00:35:30] On the Future of Work: "It's never been such a good time to be a CEO of TBD." — David Armano [00:42:28 → 00:42:31] On the Role of AI: "One thing that AI is great at and should get better at is that is that first draft, that first draft of a business plan, that first draft of any written communication, that first draft of a data, to use your example, like first draft, the data analysis, it's really good at that." — David Armano [01:00:14 → 01:00:30] Resources and Links Dan Nestle The Trending Communicator | Website Daniel Nestle | LinkedIn Dan Nestle | Twitter/X David Armano David Armano's Website David Armano | LinkedIn David By Design | David Armano on Substack Timestamped key moments from this episode (as generated by Fireflies.ai)

David Armano experienced a major shock to his system in 2020 when he was unexpectedly laid off from his job due to the COVID-19 pandemic. That was on top of postponing a wedding and navigating family life post-divorce. As someone who isn't afraid of leaning into a bit of discomfort, David decided to get vulnerable and open up about what was happening in his life with others. He quickly learned that people connect with vulnerability, and they wanted to know that side of him. In this episode, David Armano and I discuss: How we both got married before our brains were fully developed How David's getting laid off was a positive shock to his system Why it felt uncomfortable for him at first to be honest about getting laid off Why his parents marriage isn't a model for what he wants out of a relationship His North Star and guiding principles for living life The importance of being vulnerable no matter how uncomfortable it feels
David Armano has always been on the bleeding edge of communications. The futurist, brand builder, designer and thinker spent much of the last decade leading thinking at Edelman, the world's largest PR firm. He now says indicators are ripe in telling us we're entering a new Renaissance of communications and technology. Armano says social audio, the token economy and subscription-based content, feel a lot like the era after the recession of 2008 when the social media world exploded with Snapchat, Instagram and other shifts in how consumers use the Internet, their devices and how brands connect with them. Is he right? Today's episode of Digging Deeper is presented by Winfluence - Reframing Influencer Marketing to Ignite Your Brand, the new book from our host, Jason Falls. His advice on rethinking and reframing how we think of influence marketing is wrapped up in a fun read that includes interesting case studies and assessment and measurement scorecards to make prioritizing and measuring influencers easy. Where do you start with David Armano? He’s one of the best. Period. I don’t know exactly when we connected for the first time, but it was way back when blogs mattered and when it came to blogs, Logic + Emotion stood apart from all the others. Behind the blog is the man. The man who understood the intersection between technology and humanity; creativity and data; social and media. Uncanny timing, but he just announced he is leaving Edelman after almost 11 years. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

David Armano, Global Strategy Director at Edelman, joins Social Pros to discuss the relationship between word of mouth and influencer marketing. Huge thanks to our amazing sponsors for helping us make this happen. Please support them; we couldn't do it without their help! This week: Salesforce Marketing Cloud Airtable Consumers Trust Influencers Did you know that 63% of consumers trust influencers about brands more than they trust brands about brands? This has got to be one of the most undeniable proof points for the viability of peer to peer influence. Yet, so many brands still shy away from influencer marketing. The truth is that consumers are more likely to believe what they hear about a brand via word of mouth than what the brand says about themselves. Consumers listen to influencers because they trust them, and they’re entertained by them in some way. However, it’s not all sunshine and rainbows in the influencer space. As David Armano cautions, the influencer marketing space has a lot of rampant fraud. Yes, brands can leverage influencers to get in front of the right audiences. But, technologies also have the power to drive fake followers and engagement using bot farms, which can damage the authenticity of the results. In This Episode: 06:08 – How Edelman structures their social digital team 08:34 – How social campaigns have evolved over the last decade 15:36 – How much testing and experimentation brands should do in social digital 20:17 – How Edelman’s Trust Barometer works 25:07 – The relationship between influencer marketing and word of mouth 29:28 – How to assess whether a spokesperson is suitable for a brand promotion 35:48 – How issues in crisis communication has changed in the era of social Resources Get the new State of Marketing report for free from Salesforce Find out more about the community at SocialMedia.org with a special form for Social Pros listeners Find out more about how Airtable can help you organize your work and get your free guide on how to use your social media calendar better Learn more about Edelman and how they can help you earn trust through communications Download the results from the 2019 Edelman Trust Barometer Visit SocialPros.com for more insights from your favorite social media marketers.
