Welcome to Web3!I had an amazing time at Joe Pulizzi's Creator Economy Expo, and I want to share with you what I learned specifically about Web 3.0 and how blockchain, cryptocurrencies and NFTs are all related. In all honesty, I avoided these subjects for sometime as I found the NFT space to be full of people investing in them as if they were the .com startups in the tech bubble. However, wanting to learn about them knowing that Joe Pulizzi, the founder of Content Marketing World and Godfather of content marketing, is so invested in educating others around them, and after hearing Jeremiah Owyang's keynote speech, I now see things in a new light, and I think it is important enough that you do to.No, I am not investing in any NFTs, but I do see how brands (and content creators) can and will be leveraging Web3 technologies in the not-so-distant future. So, I am by no means an expert, and am very much a newbie, but I want to begin by sharing with you what I have learned and my perspective on this to help you all better understand the space.I am still very much in the R&D phase of learning about this latest trend, but if this is something you want me to talk more about on my podcast, please let me know!Key Highlights[03:50] Democratization of Content[05:56] What is Web 3.0?[06:09] The Sharing Economy[07:10] What is Blockchain[08:20] Where Blockchain Started to be Implemented[10:08] Sharing of Digital Ownership[14:14] Why Would I Want Creators to Invest in Their Communities?[18:12] Utilitarian Example of Monetizing Personal Brand[22:23] What to Do Now?[28:50] What is NFT?Notable QuotesBlockchain is the technology that will allow this to happen. And blockchain is a technology that allows us it's basically I guess, for lack of a better word, it is an accounting record, a ledger, which records every single transaction, and it can limit the number of iterations or the amount of ownership. I talked about the democratization of digital ownership. All of this is decentralized. There's not a person or an entity that owns it. It's decentralized by the framework of the technology itself, by the blockchain. And currencies have always had different values based on a number of different things. But if I am conducting a transaction with this gentleman with this taxi driver, why do we have to go through banks and foreign currency when we can do it in one global currency? Now, if assuming that we both believe in that currency, and we have that currency, there are a number of apps that make that transaction happen seamlessly. And that's really the core here is that once there's utility, these things take value. So right now, I think a lot of people are focused on the craters when it comes to NFT, the artists what have you. But it's equally important for brands to really understand this, because it is a growing economy. The economy of NF T's and cryptocurrency is already greater than influencer marketing. With the democratization of digital ownership, the democratization of financial transactions. It's almost like the democratization of community.Learn More:Join My Digital First Mastermind: https://nealschaffer.com/membership/ Learn about My Fractional CMO Consulting Services: https://nealschaffer.com/cmoDownload My Free Ebooks Here: https://nealschaffer.com/freebies/Subscribe to my YouTube Channel: https://youtube.com/nealschafferAll My Podcast Show Notes: https://podcast.nealschaffer.com

In this episode of Masters of Community, we speak with Jeremiah Owyang, Industry Analyst and Founding Partner of Kaleido Insights. Our host, David Spinks, VP of Community at Bevy and Co-Founder of CMX, moderated the conversation. Jeremiah is an advisor to many different companies and web-sharing communities. He has been analyzing the community space and understands how businesses invest in communities. Jeremiah previously worked at Forester as an analyst of the community industry. He then got involved in the collaborative consumption movement and now works closely with Web 3.0 communities and platforms. The purpose of this interview was to give a clear understanding of what it means for a community to invest in web three blockchain and crypto. Who is this episode for? Community builders, community managers, entrepreneurs, digital leaders, blockchain, and crypto enthusiasts. Three key takeaways: 1. What is Web 3.0: Web 3.0 companies are decentralized autonomous organizations that have communities at their core and work on blockchain and token-based economies. Web 3.0 comes with the premise that users will own their identities, data, and equity. It creates opportunities to gain ownership through contribution and content. 2. Web 3.0 ups and downs for communities: Web 3.0 turns communities into economies. Tokenization requires complex legal, administrative, technological, and process changes. Not all organizations or platforms are ready for this to be mainstream. It also puts the social motivations within a community at risk. In terms of advantages, the community members get digital asset rewards like tokens and NFTs. They also have access to premium community experiences and activities. 3. Launching a community token: Bringing a personalized token into a community starts by defining the goals you have with your community members. Once set up, you can create and distribute it into the community. The mass majority of the tokens should be for community members. But they have to hold them and support the community. Notable Quotes: 1. “When there's a new technology, I love to run towards it, especially if it helps organizations connect to their customers and community leaders connect to their community members” 2. “Web 3.0 comes to the promise that the Internet should be owned by the participants, by the community members“ “I'm very sure that once you tokenize, the relationship between the community members changes, and the relationship with you as the community leader changes” 3. “Reward your amazing folks who have been here with you, let people engage by earning, and three, you could sell on the open market” Answers to rapid-fire questions: 1. How do you define community? A group of people with a common cause. 2. What's a food that makes you think of home? Mom's spaghetti. 3. What book had an impact on your life? The Cluetrain Manifesto by Rick Levine: https://amzn.to/3twTWV0 4. What's one piece of advice you have for new community builders? It's not about you, it's about serving them. 5. What's the weirdest community you've ever been a part of? Second Life Community. 6. If you were to find yourself on your deathbed today, and you had to condense all of your life lessons into one piece of advice for the rest of the world, what would that advice be? Find a purpose. 7. Who in the world of community would you most like to take out for lunch or interview on your podcast and your context? Mark Zuckerberg.

. . . Cities need to move forward and embrace these models.” Owyang’s company helps larger companies incorporate aspects of the collaborative economy into their businesses. Each of the members of CrowdCompanies needs to innovate to stave off disruption. They asked Owyang "to look inside of companies, to find out how they are structured to respond to disruption trends." This episode is being released on Community Manager Appreciation Day 2017. We’re talking about the past, present and future of CMAD, with its creator, digital veteran Jeremiah Owyang of Crowd Companies. Now in its eighth year, CMAD recognizes the “pretty damn tough job,” in Jeremiah’s words, that community managers (and professionals) have, which can be thankless and misunderstood. We also talk about: How to be successful with the council/association model The career opportunity for community professionals in the shared and collaborative economies Will there be a 30th CMAD? Big Quotes “Senior director/VPs of community roles do exist. And typically, that happens when the professional is able to measure real business results of the community, whether that be customer satisfaction improvement or reduction in cost from customer care to the contact center or actually showing that there’s revenue being derived. Once they’re able to show real business value, they get elevated higher into the organizations, but beware the demands on them, from a business perspective, only increase. They become more visible. I also think that we see very successful people get elevated higher into their career when they’re able to tie in the communities to the actual product itself.” -@jowyang “I hate to devalue the [community manager] role in any way, but in some cases it is thought of as like a customer service role or a lowly role, and that’s unfortunate. The goal [of Community Manager Appreciation Day is to show] these are professionals that are more important than you can probably even imagine.” -@jowyang “I think [Community Manager Appreciation Day] should go away faster than [30 years] because if the role is appreciated, we don’t need such a day.” -@jowyang “[To be successful with the council model,] be first. If you see a market emerging, jump on it quickly. I had 10 weeks to launch. I left Altimeter on good terms, and then I had 10 weeks before LeWeb, where I was going to announce it on stage in front of, I think, 4,000 people or something like that, in Paris. I told these prospects, ‘You guys got to get on board, I want you to sign, and you can pay me later, let’s just sign the contract and be in the founding member set of the association, Crowd Companies.’ I was able to get 24 companies to commit, and these are all Fortune 500, so it’s pretty rare you get that level of commitment. … Once you have that momentum, then other companies started to sign on board.” -@jowyang “The thing about the council model, and associations, is we’re not charging a lot of money in comparison to their annual budget. The collaborative (or sharing) economy is heating up, with dramatic increases in both the number of startups that employ the model and the number of consumers who use them. In its annual survey on the collaborative economy, Crowd Companies has crunched the data to identify (among other things) key opportunities for traditional companies to compete as collaborative-economy companies increasingly threaten to take market share away from them. In this FIR Interview, Shel Holtz talks with Crowd Companies founder and CEO Jeremiah Owyang about the results of the study, with a focus on the three primary ways businesses can remain competitive as the collaborative economy continues to heat up. Jeremiah and Shel also digress into related topics, including the impact autonomous vehicles will have on both traditional and collaborative companies.Continue Reading → The post FIR Interview: Jeremiah Owyang on competing in the collaborative economy appeared first on FIR Podcast Network.

But what is driving this new model, how does it impact businesses, and what does the future of the sharing economy look like? These are some of the questions we explore with my guest this week, Jeremiah Owyang, the founder of Crowd Companies.   (Music by Ronald Jenkees)

Welcome to episode #424 of Six Pixels Of Separation - The Twist Image Podcast. I was in Silicon Valley last month doing some work with Google. I arrived a day early and spent an afternoon in Palo Alto with Jeremiah Owyang. While he's been on the podcast before to talk about his new business, Crowd Companies, it felt like the perfect timing to reconnect and see just how well brands are working in the collaborative economy. Will hotels be competitive in a world of Airbnb? Will taxi companies adapt to Uber? Is every industry at risk of being disrupted by consumers and new startups who can connect, share and sell to one another in a much more efficient way because of mobile and connected technologies? Ultimately, what we're seeing is that new startups are efficient, and it's forcing brands to be efficient. Will they be up for the challenge? Just how dramatic is this evolution? The former Forrester and Altimeter Group analyst thinks it's going to be bigger than anything we could ever imagine. Welcome to episode #372 of Six Pixels Of Separation - The Twist Image Podcast. Jeremiah Owyang is paying less attention to social business and much more to what has been called, The Collaborative Economy. He believes that the time is rip and that the collaborative economy is going to change everything (again). He's currently Partner of Customer Strategy at Altimeter Group, a research based advisory firm started by Charlene Li (Groundswell and Open Leadership). I've been following Jeremiah (and admiring him) since his days at Forrester Research and was one of the earlier readers/fans of his blog, Web Strategist. In June of this year, he launched his latest research report called, The Collaborative Economy. This is how Owyang explains it: "Right now, customers are sharing media and ideas on social technologies, in the near future, they'll use similar technologies to share products and services, which will cause a ripple of impacts far more disruptive than what we've seen before." Think about Uber, AirBnB and even Netflix. A world where we share stuff... not own it (a space that has been blossoming since the social Web was first introduced). I spent an afternoon with Owyang a few weeks back in Menlo Park (but we recorded this conversation prior to that). He's got a great mind for business, technology and marketing.
