What a time to be alive! Here we are in 2020, quarantined up, podcasting from home and dreaming of a day when we can take a random road trip with our friends to check out a roadside tourist trap (the titular type of attraction of this week’s film, “Tourist Trap”)! Now maybe we won’t encounter a mannequin-hoarding, dead-wife-obsessed, telekinetic psychopath with split personalities… but one can always hope! The time capsule of a movie gave us a lot to enjoy even if there was a ton of incomprehensible nonsense, especially the smile-inducing, indelible lead performance by Chuck Connors. Earning a double “stream,” it definitely reached the level of “background movie” at one of Tim’s imaginary house parties. The film stars Paul Le Mat, Irene Miracle, Matt Roe and Kathryn O'Reilly as psychics who are plotted against by a former colleague, using puppets animated by an Egyptian spell. Puppet Master: The Littlest Reich is a reboot of the franchise which brings Nazis into the mix (bad?) but also Udo Kier (good.) Tourist Trap is a weird, overlooked and under-seen horror classic. On this episode of the Really Awful Movies Podcast, we give this movie its due. "God help those who get caught in the Tourist Trap, where beautiful young people looking for excitement...are TRICKED, TERRORIZED, TRAPPED..." It's "the nightmare that never ends" as well, but we digress. It's a 1979 American horror film directed by David Schmoeller, and starring Chuck Connors, the Brooklynite known for his four decades in the entertainment business, as well as playing in two professional sports leagues. Tourist Trap also stars Jocelyn Jones, Jon Van Ness, Robin Sherwood, and Tanya Roberts. The film revolves around a group of friends who wind up stranded at Mr. Slausen's out of the way "museum," where the mannequins are very lifelike. Despite its name, Tourist Trap is definitely not your standard, lost-by-the-roadside movie. It's way more supernatural and oddball. It predated the slasher boom and was a bit lost among the shuffle...so it's our job to spread the word...also, the film features one of the great kills in horror history, and is mentioned in our book, Death by Umbrella! The 100 Weirdest Horror Movie Weapons.
Join your host Duncan live from THE VOID discussing all things Horror on The Podcast Under the Stairs. On this episode Duncan returns to the airways in his temporary home away from home (in THE VOID). This week Duncan is joined by Andy Blockley of Big Horror in Little Podcast & Doing the Nasty Podcast to discuss two movies by director David Schmoeller in Crawlspace (1985) & Tourist Trap (1979).
We're talking about the 1979 film, Tourist Trap. When a quintet of young people meet creepy Mr. Slaussen (Chuck Connors) -- the proprietor of a roadside wax museum -- bad things happen.

Episode three sees the team take to the backwoods along a forgotten stretch of road populated only by Mr Slausen and his band of telekinetic mannequins. That's right; in this instalment we are smothering plaster all over our faces in an attempt to understand the madness that lurks behind David Schmoeller's 1979 slasher epic Tourist Trap. Just watch out for those water moccasins! In our backpacks this week we find Sierra Nevada Pale Ale, Brew Dog's Punk IPA, some Valencian seawater beer called Er Boquerón and the aptly-named 'Impale IPA'. Poor Woody!

Every year young people disappear... For our 25th show we're featuring David Schmoeller's Tourist Trap. A unique, original slasher from the late 70s. After our Maniac show it seemed correct to focus on another horror movie that brings mannequins into the foreground and no other film does that better than Tourist Trap. What would you do if you were trapped by a killer with incredible telekinetic powers? Would you have what it takes to survive or would you end up another tortured mannequin at his disposal? Tourist Trap stars Chuck Connors. It has the stunning Tanya Roberts running around in daisy dukes the whole film. She was a bond girl in the 80s A View to a Kill. It also stars Jocelyn Jones, Jon Van Ness and Robin Sherwood. We were also privileged to get writer/director David Schmoeller on the phone after we watched the film and he gave us a great interview to share with you. He explains how the idea of Tourist Trap originated and what inspired him to make the film. How it almost didn't get finished. The turmoils of his Crawlspace movie. We'll also talk about his new film that's coming out called Little Monsters. Join us for another 45 minute show filled with soundtrack music and audio clips of the scenes we discuss.
