In the United States, 22 percent of Americans live in places that authorize medical aid in dying. But as more states consider-and pass-legislation that supports the practice, confusion and hurdles remain. In 2015, author and anthropologist Anita Hannig began researching medical aid-in-dying in the United States. She spent hundreds of hours speaking with doctors, patients, and lawmakers across the country. The results of Hannig's long-term project are laid out in her latest book, The Day I Die: The Untold Story of Assisted Dying in America. Combining extensive research with personal narratives, Hannig goes beyond the surface-level polarization to offer a deeper, more nuanced assessment of a social issue that will continue to affect more Americans.rnrnThe Day I Die was a nonfiction finalist for the 2023 Oregon Book Awards. The State Library of Oregon also selected the title to represent the Oregon Center for the Book at the National Book Festival in Washington D.C.rnrnPreviously, Hannig served as an associate professor of anthropology at Brandeis University. Her first book, Beyond Surgery: Injury, Healing, and Religion at an Ethiopian Hospital, was awarded the 2018 Eileen Basker Memorial Prize from the Society for Medical Anthropology.

Ben and Bob are both super fans of the American indie rock band, “The National”. Both have been obsessed for a decade-plus with the roots of their friendship tracing back to that discovery. Challenged with distilling it down to their absolute favorites, they each come up with a Top 10 list with a few overlapping songs. Mutual favorites include “Bloodbuzz Ohio”, “Mistaken for Strangers”, and “Mr. November”. Ben's list is rounded off by “Don't Swallow the Cap”, “Rylan”, “I Need My Girl”, “Slow Show”, “Fake Empire”, “Walk It Back”, and “Nobody Else Will Be There”. Bob's list also includes “Day I Die”, “I Should Live in Salt”, “Afraid of Everyone”, “Vanderlyle Crybaby Geeks”, “Secret Meeting”, “Abel”, and “Looking For Astronauts”. Make yourself a 17-song playlist, give it a few spins, then listen to Ben and Bob fanboy out on this hard-double-vouch episode of SSOS.

He was unknown to the Security Police at Vlakplaas near Pretoria until they were told to "make a plan" with him. Several banning orders, long days in detention and a spell on Robben Island had failed to break his spirit and crush his fight against apartheid. He was Griffiths Mxenge, the human rights lawyer who vigorously defended ANC comrades. So they abducted, stabbed and hammered him to death at Umlazi, south of Durban, in November 1981. Fifteen years later, in October 1996, three of Mxengeís awaiting-trial murderers appeared before the Amnesty Committee in Durban. They were Dirk Coetzee, Almond Nofemela and David Tshikalanga. Although they had already broken their oath of silence on the apartheid governmentís death-squads seven years earlier, they had never buried their skeletons.
