Leave a carcass or a log or a pile of poop out in the wild long enough and it will break down into its component parts. Decomposers are an often-overlooked but essential component of ecosystems past and present. This episode, we explore the varied processes of decomposition and how scientists study decomposers and use that information. We'll also discuss the importance of decomposition to the fossil record, as well as how we can identify signs of decomposers from the distant past. Richard Dudanski in conversation with David Eastaugh https://www.amazon.co.uk/Squat-City-Rocks-protopunk-beyond This musical memoir traces the author's life in the corrugated-iron clad ruins of West London's Squat Land during the two years immediately prior to the Punk Explosion of '76, playing with Strummer's seminal garage band “The 101'ers” in the spit-and-sawdust music bars of the capital. The thrills and spills of a crazy, quirky, hand-to-mouth existence gives way to relative disenchantment with the oncoming of the Punk Uprising, which for the author represents, at least partly, a sell-out to the Machiavellian Managers, as much as the vaunted revolution in British popular culture. After an aborted venture with the iconoclastic “Tymon Dogg and the Fools”, a stint with Lydon's metal box period “Public Image Limited”, a term with the Dantesque-dub of “Basement Five”, Dudanski's tale relates the ups and downs of his involvement in a myriad of bands forming part of a fringe underground London scene through the late 70's and 80's - “Bank of Dresden”, “The Raincoats”, “The Tesco Bombers”, "Vincent Units", “The Decomposers”, and his eventual move from London to Granada...Forming an integral part of the book are the illustrations by Esperanza Romero (Richard's partner) many of which were drawn "in situ" back in time...

In addition to teaching and researching all things fungal, he is the Director at the Itasca Biological Station & Laboratories in northwestern Minnesota. This field station for science is tucked into thirty-two thousand acres of old growth boreal forests within the second oldest State Park in the United States. The station also sits next to a lake, Lake Itasca, which is known as the headwaters of the Mississippi River. He assumed that position in 2018. Adding these duties to his job was, in his words, "a reflection of my deep connection and commitment to nature that was forged in the mountains of West Virginia as a kid, along the entirety of the Appalachian Trail as a young adult, and among family and friends in a Saint Paul neighborhood who have shown how important community is to conservation.   TOPICS COVERED:   Drawn into the Boreal Forest   Role of Fungi in Forest Acid Deposition   Basics of Wood-Rotting Saprobic Fungi   White Rot, Brown Rot & Soft Rot Fungi   Historical Contingency and Succession in Wood Rot   Fungi in the Carbon Cycle   Jonathan's Lignin Uncertainty   Patterns in Distributions of Wood Rot Fungi   Pre-White Rot Fungi Coal Formation Hypothesis   Wood Rot 2 Step - Fungi Throwing Dynamite & Avoiding the Blowback   Itasca Research Station   Community Science & Assembling the A Team   Advice for Pursuing Studies in Mycology    Decomposition Builds Character   EPISODE RESOURCES:   Jonathan Schilling Academic Page: https://cbs.umn.edu/contacts/jonathan-schilling   Itasca Biological Research Station: https://cbs.umn.edu/itasca   PLOS ONE Research Article: https://journals.plos.org/plosone/article?id=10.1371/journal.pone.0120679   Frontiers of Microbiology Research Article: https://www.frontiersin.org/articles/10.3389/fmicb.2020.01646/full   Fomitopsis pinicola (fungus): https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fomitopsis_pinicola   Fomitopsis betulina (fungus): https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fomitopsis_betulina

My AP Biology ThoughtsUnit 8 Episode #22Welcome to My AP Biology Thoughts podcast, my name is Pauline and I am your host for episode 22 called Unit 8 Ecology: Food Web and Food Chains and types of organisms.. Today we will be discussing the classification of different organisms in each trophic level of food webs and varying food chains  Segment 1: Introduction to Food Chains and Food WebsTo start off, let's differentiate between food chains and food webs. The picture shows how food chains are a smaller representation of an ecosystem, so several food chains within one ecosystem make up a food web. Therefore, a food chain will show only one organism at each trophic level, while a food web will show multiple producers for example. That brings us into identifying the types of organisms in these food chains and webs. At the bottom are the producers that convert the solar energy into chemical energy that can be used by other organisms. All producers are autotrophs, meaning they make their own food. These producers are eaten by herbivores known as primary consumers. The next trophic levels are made of secondary consumers, tertiary consumers and so on. These consumers are either omnivores or carnivores. Two other types of organisms that are often forgotten about are detritivores and decomposers. Detritivores consume material to break it down, so this would be like an earthworm. Decomposers feed off of dead decaying matter like fungi. Fungi release a liquid that breaks down the matter to suck up the nutrients. A key element of food chains is that only 10% of energy is transferred between trophic levels, so producers must provide a lot of energy to sustain the highest consumers.  Segment 2: Examples of to Food Chains and Food WebsA very local example of a food chain here in NJ is shown in the picture including grass as a producer eaten by a grasshopper, who would then be eaten by a small bird. This bird as a secondary consumer would be eaten by a snake as a tertiary consumer. And to take it one step further, an owl could eat the snake. This is an example of only one food chain, so a NJ food web would maybe also include a deer as a primary consumer and a fox as a secondary consumer.  Segment 3: Digging Deeper into Food Chains and Food WebsFood webs and the role of each organism involved within the food chain fit into the greater picture of ecology because of the effects that changes in energy availability can have on the ecosystem. For example, if there is a decrease in the amount of free energy available to the producer level, it affects everyone. Each trophic level would receive less energy so populations would decrease, and the top trophic levels might even die out. Another example of the effects of energy availability is the germination period of many organisms. A lot of organisms have their babies in the spring when the sun is out for longer periods of time. This is because the producers get more sun energy to grow, which then means that more energy is transferred to the primary consumers to reproduce. To conclude, in the bigger picture of things, the future of food webs is pretty promising. With elevated CO2 levels in the atmosphere from climate change, producers that make their own organic molecules from carbon dioxide will produce more energy. Therefore, more energy is available at the heterotroph levels so populations of consumers would increase. Overall, food webs explain population size and therefore population growth. Today on Mushroom Hour we are joined by the distinguished Lynne Boddy, Professor of Microbial Ecology at Cardiff University. After undergraduate studies in Biology and Mathematical Statistics at the University of Exeter, she was interested in any and every type of ecology. A fortuitous position at the University of London led her to studying wood decay processes, which would turn out to be the subject of her PhD. That work snowballed into a 40-year exploration of wood decay processes with fungi at its core. As well as scientifically challenging and environmentally of massive consequences, mycelia and their interactions have a huge aesthetic appeal for Professor Boddy. There are so many burning questions when it comes to fungal biology, fungi’s relationships to food sources, fungi’s relationship to other fungi and other microorganisms that she, along with around 40 PhD students, post-docs and other co-workers, have striven and are striving to answer. Lynne’s passion for fungi laces out into studies of mycorrhizal fungi, the rising amateur mycologist community, and nearly every other aspect of how fungi will change human lives. There is an obvious joy in her communication of this information to both student audiences and to the public at large. We’re about to enter an exciting world of fungal battles, life and death struggles, epic hunts for food and the complexities of non-human intelligence.
