L is for Ligtnin' (and) Licks. Ladies Love Loud Losers, listen...In the early 1970s, legendary collaborator and self-proclaimed non-musician Brian Eno famously designed a deck of 115 cards containing elliptical imperatives to spark in the user creative connections unobtainable through regular modes of work. He called his creation "Oblique Strategies." For the past six decades, artists the world over in every artistic medium have used Eno's strategy while attempting to overcome a lull in creative output. In 2025, lazy, lackluster yet somehow still award-winning* hobby podcasters and self-proclaimed Lightnin' Lickers Jay and Deon found themselves uninspired when contemplating the potential theme of their upcoming forty-third episode. Richard Dudanski in conversation with David Eastaugh https://www.amazon.co.uk/Squat-City-Rocks-protopunk-beyond This musical memoir traces the author's life in the corrugated-iron clad ruins of West London's Squat Land during the two years immediately prior to the Punk Explosion of '76, playing with Strummer's seminal garage band “The 101'ers” in the spit-and-sawdust music bars of the capital. The thrills and spills of a crazy, quirky, hand-to-mouth existence gives way to relative disenchantment with the oncoming of the Punk Uprising, which for the author represents, at least partly, a sell-out to the Machiavellian Managers, as much as the vaunted revolution in British popular culture. After an aborted venture with the iconoclastic “Tymon Dogg and the Fools”, a stint with Lydon's metal box period “Public Image Limited”, a term with the Dantesque-dub of “Basement Five”, Dudanski's tale relates the ups and downs of his involvement in a myriad of bands forming part of a fringe underground London scene through the late 70's and 80's - “Bank of Dresden”, “The Raincoats”, “The Tesco Bombers”, "Vincent Units", “The Decomposers”, and his eventual move from London to Granada...Forming an integral part of the book are the illustrations by Esperanza Romero (Richard's partner) many of which were drawn "in situ" back in time...

My guest this week is multi-talented musician, Jah Wobble We discuss, amongst other things, the making of his latest album ‘A Brief History Of Now'. A fantastic post-punk record, which I really can't recommend enough. Jah's excellent radio documentary about Sid is available to listen to online. As well as collaborating with artists from the world of rock and pop, Jah has worked with some of the biggest names in electronic music, including Massive Attack, Bjork, Moby, Bomb The Bass and Brian Eno He also played bass on the Orb's iconic track. ‘The Blue Room' from the U.F.Orb album  Jah is an excellent raconteur, with so many great stories to tell. It's also worth checking out his book ‘Memoirs of a Geezer: Music, Mayhem, Life' which was originally published in 2009. A (relatively) in-depth analysis of singer, songwriter and musician Jah Wobble. With a stage name coined by Sid Vicious, when he was drunkenly slurring his real name, Jah Wobble began his musical career as a founder member of Public Image Limited, his heavy, hypnotic bass lines defining their early sound. Wobble parted company with Lydon and Public Image Limited in 1980 to pursue what would become a successful and prolific solo career and has since collaborated with a wide variety of musicians and recording projects over the years. Raised as a Roman Catholic he later converted to Buddhism. His wife is harpist and guzheng player Zi Lan Liao and his daughter is music producer Natalie Wardle. His autobiography, Memoirs of a Geezer: Music, Life, Mayhem was released in September 2009.According to Spotify 'Jah Wobble is one of the genuine musical polymaths to emerge from the post-punk era as a virtuoso bassist, composer, producer, journalist, poet, and author.'In this episode I am in conversation with Dr. Andrew Webber.I hope you enjoy this podcast.Mathew Woodall

Entdeckt haben wir u.a. lange Versionen von Iggy Pop, Sigue Sigue Sputnik, Public Image Limited, The Cure, New Order, The Jesus & Mary Chain und Siouxsie & The Banshees. Remixe von Killing Joke, Clock DVA, Cabaret Voltaire, Bauhaus und The Mission. Und wir fördern Postpunk-, Indie- und Synthi-Pop-Perlen von B-Movie, Modern English, Kirsty MacColl und Psyche in langen Versionen zutage. When Nick Launay was seventeen years old, he achieved a remarkable feat, landing his first producing credit on Robin Scott's 1979 chart-topping hit single Pop Muzik. And that's just the beginning of his incredible story. As an assistant at Townhouse Studios, Nick found himself in the right place at the right time when the original engineer took a quick pee break during a Public Image Limited recording session. In an unexpected twist, PIL's frontman John Lydon took advantage of the moment and locked the door, entrusting Nick with the controls. As a result, Nick went on to produce PIL's acclaimed album Flowers of Romance. Nick's producing talents soon made him a sought-after producer in  post-punk, working with some of the biggest artists. The Birthday Party, Kate Bush, and Lou Reed are just a few who have benefited from his producing.

Across five albums - all given a fresh clean-up and augmented with singles, B-sides and rarities in the new box - the band combined 80's indie/alt rock, post-punk, garage, dance and hip hop to innovate their way into becoming one of the most important and influential bands of their era. Their genre-hopping and political identities came with a cost. While their fanbase was fervent and ever-growing, mainstream success eluded the band, as their sound was too difficult for marketers to pigeonhole and their politics - particularly their identification with Northern Ireland and other liberation struggles, made them untouchable and in some cases censored by the mainstream press of the time. Keith Levene sadly passed away in his home in Norfolk on 11 November 2022, aged 65. He had been battling liver cancer. He was a hugely influential figure on the early London punk explosion. What set him apart from many of his peers, was in a scene based around a DIY- play three chord ethos, Keith really could play. A gifted guitarist, he liked to experiment and push the envelope. In the summer of 1976, he was a founding member of The Clash. However, shortly after recruiting Joe Strummer, Keith left the band. After the Sex Pistols imploded in 1978, John Lydon asked Keith to join him and Jah Wobble to former Public Image Limited. Keith was in PiL for five years, in which time the band released what is widely regarded as some of the most influential material of the time. Including, Metal Box which is considered by many to be a post punk classic. When I heard of Keith's death, I had a dig into my audio archives and found an in-depth interview with him recorded in 2013. At the time Keith was living in the United States. The recording was broadcast on Fuzzbox my late-night punk & ska show on the sadly missed Pure 107.8FM in Stockport. It's basically the same format as a Fuzzcast episode, a punk rock life story. Keith has a lot to talk about - His fall out with John Lydon, how he persuaded Joe Strummer to join the Clash, Sid Vicious, Bernie Rhodes, Jah Wobble, teaching Viv Albertine to play guitar. It's all here. So hopefully you will enjoy.

Ahí teníamos a bandas Public Image Limited, Wire, Gang Of Four, Joy Division, Bauhaus, Echo & The Bunnymen, los primeros The Cure, Siouxsie & The Banshees... Dirige Manuel Pinazo

Martin Atkins' experience as a musician and entrepreneur spans genres, borders and industries. He was a member of Public Image Limited with Johnny Rotten, Ministry, Killing Joke, and Pigface in addition to being a performer with Nine Inch Nails. He's touched every aspect of the music industry and covered it in his three books. We discuss Martin's most recent undertaking, the Museum of Post Punk and Industrial Music in Chicago and what it's been like collecting, and deciding what to do with equipment, costumes, and other artifacts from his rich and colorful career. Martin is also the music business program coordinator at Millikin University in Decatur, IL and lectures regularly about the music industry. We devote time to my questions about building a local scene in a highly globalized world and how artists can get recognized amidst the proliferation of music online. In 1990, while on tour with Ministry, he formed his own band, Pigface. He also worked with Nine Inch Nails, performing on the Grammy award winning “Wish” and appearing in the “Head like a Hole” video. In December of 1978, Public Image Limited released their 1st studio recording. The record is a mess. Brimming with the lyrical stylings of a young man desperate to show he's got serious things to say, but delivered with the obnoxious air of one who just couldn't be bothered. It is a juvenile master class in self-importance, masquerading as a grand statement. These are not songs. This is not an album. But goodness gracious, that guitar tone and bass work is setting a pretty table for the future of rock music. Let's talk PiL, First Issue!

Martin talks about his journey, from his dad getting him a drum kit and setting him up with gigs, the early punk scene and joining PIL, to noticing the mismanagement of the bands, he was in and turning their finances around through merch. We learn about how Martin got into teaching students through his experiences with touring and the music business, writing books based on those classes, how that led to talking at music festivals, and the impetus of turning the collections of memorabilia from the past 40 plus years into a museum. We also find out how Ivar Bjornson, guitarist for the Norwegian band Enslaved, taught Martin the importance of saying YES, to everything. Click here for the main show notes page! So this is me applying - I have my Master’s Degree now, big deal, but it changes the way I look at things - so instead of just going ‘we recorded a bunch of material, it was crazy’, well how much material did we record? Okay, so I go and look at my cassette archive, there’s 17 rolls of two-inch tape. How much music fits on a roll? 32 minutes. Oh my god. So now I have a spreadsheet with all of the songs, all of the versions. There are some songs on Commercial Zone that Keith isn’t even on, that he didn’t know existed until he took the tapes.  I don’t think it’s any secret that Keith had a drug problem. Like a really serious drug problem. A really serious problem with serious drugs. We were all using speed and drinking a lot, but he was levels above. There were times...you know John [Lydon] is a magical, charismatic individual. And his charisma protected PiL. There could be 10,000 people in a room and John could stare everybody down, more effectively than security punching people. And we were protected by that. It also allowed for Keith to be not always there at shows. He’d take a two song break. And we’d just do an instrumental version, or John would just sing over bass and drums. And people would be like ‘wow, PiL, it’s crazy’. Instead of ‘hold on a minute, where’s the guitarist? I like this song.’ But we got away with it. I think less and less, but we did get away with it.  When we booked ten shows in Japan, the walls started to close in on this version of the band. There are very strict drug laws in Japan. You can’t have a Vicks inhaler. They’re illegal because they’re a stimulant. Never mind heroin. And then Paul McCartney and his band, Wings, he got off a plane with like a kilo of weed. He was in jail for 11 days. I mean, the world went mad. He was fined a million dollars, and then let go. But what happened was every Japanese promoter then retroactively inserted something called ‘the Paul McCartney clause’....

The Explosion of Deferred Dreams: Musical Renaissance and Social Revolution in San Francisco, 1965–1975 (PM Press) As the fiftieth anniversary of the Summer of Love floods the media with debates and celebrations of music, political movements, “flower power,” “acid rock,” and “hippies”; The Explosion of Deferred Dreams offers a critical re-examination of the interwoven political and musical happenings in San Francisco in the Sixties. Author, musician, and native San Franciscan Mat Callahan explores the dynamic links between the Black Panthers and Sly and the Family Stone, the United Farm Workers and Santana, the Indian Occupation of Alcatraz and the San Francisco Mime Troupe, and the New Left and the counterculture. Callahan’s meticulous, impassioned arguments both expose and reframe the political and social context for the San Francisco Sound and the vibrant subcultural uprisings with which it is associated. Using dozens of original interviews, primary sources, and personal experiences, the author shows how the intense interplay of artistic and political movements put San Francisco, briefly, in the forefront of a worldwide revolutionary upsurge. A must-read for any musician, historian, or person who “was there” (or longed to have been), The Explosion of Deferred Dreams is substantive and provocative, inviting us to reinvigorate our historical sense-making of an era that assumes a mythic role in the contemporary American zeitgeist. Praise for The Explosion of Deferred Dreams:  “Mat Callahan was a red diaper baby lucky to be attending a San Francisco high school during the ‘Summer of Love.’ He takes a studied approach, but with the eye of a revolutionary, describing the sociopolitical landscape that led to the explosion of popular music (rock, jazz, folk, R&B) coupled with the birth of several diverse radical movements during the golden 1965–1975 age of the Bay Area. Callahan comes at it from every angle imaginable (black power, anti–Vietnam War, the media, the New Left, feminism, sexual revolution—with the voice of authority backed up by interviews with those who lived it.” —Pat Thomas, author of Listen, Whitey! The Sights and Sounds of Black Power 1965–1975 “All too often, people talk about the ’60s without mentioning our music and the fun we had trying to smash the state and create a culture based upon love. Mat Callahan’s book is a necessary corrective.” —George Katsiaficas, author of The Imagination of the New Left: A Global Analysis of 1968 “Something very special took place in San Francisco in the Sixties, generating waves of social and aesthetic motion that still ricochet around this planet. The Explosion of Deferred Dreams takes a clear-eyed, politically engaged view that separates truth from propaganda. Grasping why the time became legendary and how society dealt with the challenges it created is what Explosion is about—and it accomplishes this critical task with intelligence and clarity.” —Dennis McNally, author of A Long Strange Trip: The Inside History of the Grateful Dead “In this landmark work, Mat Callahan painstakingly braids disparate threads of the rich tapestry of San Francisco—music, politics, race, culture. In this vast, panoramic portrait, Callahan digs out social/political undercurrents that have never been more thoroughly explored.” —Joel Selvin, Summer of Love: The Inside Story of LSD, Rock & Roll, Free Love and High Times in the Wild West Mat Callahan is a musician and author originally from San Francisco, where he founded Komotion International. He is the author of three books, Sex, Death & the Angry Young Man, Testimony, and The Trouble with Music as well as the editor of Songs of Freedom: The James Connolly Songbook. He currently resides in Bern, Switzerland. Pat Thomas is the author of Listen, Whitey! The Sights and Sounds of Black Power 1965-1975 and the author of the forthcoming book Did It! Jerry Rubin – An American Revolutionary (both published by Fantagraphics). As a reissue producer, he has overseen the release of vintage recordings from Public Image Limited, Allen Ginsberg, and Judee Sill amongst others. He has appeared multiple times on the BBC and NPR discussing the impact of the Black Panther Party on popular music and served as a consultant to the PBS documentary: The Black Panthers: Vanguard of the Revolution

В 1989 он возвращается к музыке с собственной группой "Invaders of the Heart", записав альбом "Without Judgment".
