Local resident Mike Harris is the kind of guy that would give you the shirt off your back if you needed it. A few years back he started a Harley ride to collect toys for the local Toys 4 Tots program. Since then it has grown to this amazing event that helped collect over 3,500 toys and raise over $42,000 last year alone. They are back this Sunday at the Del Mar Racetrack collecting new, unwrapped toys to help give to local kids in need this holiday season. If you bring a toy, the Del Mar Racetrack will also give you free admission. We talked to Mike this morning about the event and how much this event has grown over the years.
Welcome to Del Mar, California! Del Mar is located in Southern California on the Pacific Ocean and was established as a seaside resort in 1885. The town's name was inspired by the Bayard Taylor poem "The Fight of Paso Del Mar." Located 20 miles from San Diego, the town was a popular retreat for movie stars during Hollywood's golden era. The town is home to the Del Mar Racetrack. Built by the Thoroughbred Club in 1938, the track hosts thoroughbred horse races as well as the San Diego County Fair. Given it's popularity and proximity to San Diego, the town has been called home by a long list of notables including Desi Arnaz, Burt Bacharach, Drew Brees, Tony Hawk, Steve Perry, and Willie Shoemaker. We hope you enjoy our visit to Del Mar!

Welcome to a very special episode of the Happy Half Hour! This week, we’re chatting with chef Richard Blais, this year’s culinary ambassador for KAABOO Del Mar, three days of music, comedy shows, and live cooking performances from top chefs at the Del Mar Racetrack. KAABOO kicks off this Friday, September 13, and lasts through Sunday, September 15. At the “Palate Stage,” you can see Richard and chefs such as Michael Mina, Travis Swikard, and Nyesha Arrington do a live cooking performance. Richard will be at the Palate Stage on Sunday, September 15, and our very own food critic Troy Johnson will be there every day emceeing the chefs’ performances. Richard chatted with us about everything we can expect to find at KAABOO this year—which we say is a “grown up concert” because there’s plenty of creature comforts onsite like nice bathrooms, seating areas, and air-conditioned spaces to cool off. Richard also tells us why he hates the term “cooking demonstration,” how he preps for live shows and TV tapings, and how our restaurant culture has changed over the years, requiring chefs to be performers today. Richard and Troy both revealed what it’s really like to cook in front of a live audience—and talk the entire time (it’s not easy!)—and shared some of their biggest mistakes and disasters. Along with live cooking performances, there’s a lot of food, wine, beer, and cocktails to enjoy at KAABOO this year. One highlight that we talk about is the number of food trucks that will be there, and that there are trucks coming from LA and all over Southern California, in addition to local vendors like Wicked Maine Lobster, The Baked Bear, and Union Food Truck. Finally, in addition to three days of music with headliners like Snoop Dogg, Wu-Tang Clan, Dave Matthews Band, and Mumford & Sons, get ready to dance at KAABOO! This year, KAABOO is attempting to break the world record for the biggest silent disco and the largest simultaneous running man. Visit kaaboodelmar.com to see the complete lineup, or download the app to stay up to date with latest info.
This week we investigate the hauntings of Del Mar Racetrack. Multiple eyewitness accounts claim to hear voices, laughter, and of course hoof beats. But can animals even be ghost? We’re also taking FAQ reader questions. Where should you dine for your anniversary? What’s a hip and cool place that’s not crowded? Where should you take visitors? We’re answering it all. This episode is sponsored by Kaaboo Del Mar, the three-day music and comedy festival, featuring Katy Perry, Foo Fighters, Robert Plant, and more at the Del Mar Racetrack and Fairgrounds September 14–16.
On today’s show hosts Erin Chambers Smith and Troy Johnson along with producer Archana Ram are talking about Soda & Swine coming to UC San Diego, University Heights’s upcoming restaurant-brewery, and a new dessert shop in Del Mar Heights with rainbow-colored cakes. Our special guest is PJ Busalacchi, general manager of Little Italy’s Barbusa and part of San Diego’s famed restaurant family. PJ dishes about the evolution of the family’s brand, shifting focus back to Little Italy after years in Hillcrest, and what it was like growing up with his Sicilian father, or as Troy calls him, Papa Joe. We end with Two People/$50, including Little Lion Café, Harumama, Queenstown Public House, and OB Garden Café. This episode is sponsored by Kaaboo Del Mar, the three-day music and comedy festival, featuring Katy Perry, Foo Fighters, Robert Plant, and more at the Del Mar Racetrack and Fairgrounds September 14–16.
On today’s Happy Half Hour, hosts Erin Chambers Smith and Troy Johnson along with producer Archana Ram are talking restaurant news, including the new Queenstown Bistro at Westfield UTC and Marea, a fair-trade coffee company started by local pro athletes, like Rob Machado. Plus, we’re sharing all the details about a contest we’re hosting with Puesto, where your personal taco recipe could land on Puesto’s menu. Get all the info here—submit by March 31! This week’s guest is Deborah Scott, Executive Chef and partner at Cohn Restaurant Group, one of San Diego’s most prolific restaurant brands whose projects include Bo-Beau, Coasterra, Island Prime, Vintana, and most recently, Libertad. She chats about how Hillcrest has evolved, the challenge of finding good cooks, and diners who text her for reservations. We’re also chatting about a very hot topic—are you for or against sharing food at a restaurant? We end with Two People/$50, including Masala Street, The Friendly, and Bull’s Smokin’ BBQ. This episode is sponsored by Kaaboo Del Mar, the three-day music and comedy festival, featuring Katy Perry, Foo Fighters, Robert Plant, and more at the Del Mar Racetrack and Fairgrounds September 14–16.
