A farm family in Delta Junction, Alaska, has taken on the personal challenge of trying to help the state combat food security.  Bryce Wrigley and his son, Milo, have created the Alaska Flour Company to maximize their 1,700 acres of small grains and cover crops they grow.  Initially it began as a flour milling operation, but has evolved into a packaged goods and bakery operation too.  Bryce explains their business model to Pam Jahnke. Landus and Conduit have announced the launch of an unprecedented healthcare program- powered by Momentum Ag, which is designed to meet the needs of farmers and businesses that support farming communities. Landus CEO Matt Carstens says this is a problem that has been highlighted to Landus for some time now, and while others have failed at offering rural healthcare like this in the past, he is excited to get farmers taken care of. Dean Ebert with the Helena Agri operations in West Bend, joins Pam Jahnke to discuss what he's seeing with the beginning of silage harvest.  He also's encouraging farms to start soil sampling now.  Paid for by Helena Agri. Rick Zemlicka's family sesquicentennial farm in Iowa County, has been a cornerstone of his heritage since his great-great-grandfather purchased the original 80 acres in 1874. Arriving from Bohemia with his parents in 1860, his ancestor expanded the farm to 320 acres over the years. The original farmstead included basic buildings and facilities for a modest mixed operation with cows, pigs, chickens, and a large garden. Despite facing significant challenges, including the tragic loss of his great-great-grandfather's oldest son in 1895 and hardships during the Great Depression, the farm has persevered. Rick's great-grandfather rebuilt the barn and house in the early 1920s, and these structures still stand today. Rick reflects fondly on childhood memories, such as playing near his father's plowing and enjoying time with cousins in the creeks. The farm remains a vital part of his life, and he hopes it will continue to be passed down to future generations. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

From July 15th through August 15th, we explored Homer, Steward, Anchorage, Palmer, Talkeetna, Denali National Park, Fairbanks, Chena Hot Springs, and Delta Junction in Alaska before crossing back into Canada to start our trek back into the Lower-48. It's been such an amazing summer.  I was able to work in three book signings throughout Alaska and we were completely overwhelmed by the outpouring of support. Sandy and I have loved sharing this journey with our friends and family.

A Delta Junction woman finds herself in a precarious legal situation after Alaska State Troopers accused her of attempting to disguise a fatal hit-and-run incident as a collision with a moose. Chelsie Erickson, 32, was arrested on October 17, facing charges of negligent homicide, failure to render aid, and two counts of tampering with evidence. Her mother, Janell Erickson, 60, was also arrested and charged with tampering with evidence.    The incident dates back to the night of August 28 when Chelsie Erickson allegedly struck and killed 47-year-old John Emerick, who was walking along the side of the highway in Delta Junction near milepost 1421. Instead of reporting the accident, Erickson is accused of fleeing the scene.    The arrest followed an investigation triggered by a tip received by troopers about the hit-and-run. Authorities obtained a search warrant for Erickson's home, leading to the discovery of potential evidence related to the incident.    According to reports, one of Erickson's friends informed the police that Chelsie had mentioned hitting a moose on the same night that John Emerick was fatally injured. Investigators attempted to locate the moose in question, as Erickson claimed it had run into the woods following the collision. However, they were unable to locate any such animal.    Intriguingly, Erickson never reported the alleged moose collision to the authorities. Police, however, did locate a vehicle matching the description provided by witnesses on the night of Emerick's tragic death. Inside a locked detached garage on Erickson's property, they found a 2014 Chevy Silverado pickup truck. The vehicle had several pieces of its front-end grill removed, and moose hairs were discovered scattered on top of the engine. Notably, there was no fur present on the front of the truck.   The investigation also revealed that a moose head hanging in the Erickson's garage appeared to have bald spots, raising suspicions that moose hair had been deliberately collected from the mount and then spread over the truck's engine compartment. This discovery led authorities to conclude that an attempt had been made to create a false narrative of a moose collision.   Chelsie Erickson and her mother, Janell Erickson, have both been arrested and incarcerated at the Fairbanks Correctional Center.   The case highlights the serious nature of the charges facing Chelsie Erickson, including negligent homicide, failure to render aid, and tampering with evidence, all related to the tragic hit-and-run incident. Tampering with evidence charges were also filed against Janell Erickson, possibly for her alleged involvement in attempting to disguise the true circumstances of the incident.   The legal proceedings are expected to unfold in the coming months, shedding further light on the events of that fateful night and the actions taken by the Erickson family in its aftermath.   This case underscores the importance of reporting accidents promptly and accurately to authorities, as well as the potential consequences of attempting to conceal the truth. The accused individuals will have their day in court, where the legal system will determine their culpability in this unfortunate incident. Want to listen to ALL of our podcasts AD-FREE? The 1500 mile Alaska-Canada Highway from Dawson Creek, British Columbia, to Delta Junction, Alaska, was initially constructed in 8 months in 1942. The story of the difficult conditions experienced by the 10,000 Army soldiers and 6,000 contractors is a compelling one, but the experience of the 3600 African-American soldiers who were segregated and exposed to even more challenges is a less well-known one. Christine McClure and her husband Dennis published their first book about the construction of the Al-Can called We Fought the Road in 2017. What prompted Christine to write the book was the discovery, after his death, of her father's letters to her mother during his time with the 93rd Regiment; he had been one of the few white officers assigned to that Black regiment. Sadly, Dennis McClure passed away in September 2021. This interview took place via Zoom from Chris's home in South Carolina in August 2022.
