These are movements that are hoping to get all of the researchers in the same field or subfield to agree to a given set of assessments, measures, procedures, and/or reporting metrics (Think: Everyone who measures mother's education would ask the same stem question with the same eight category responses, which would be coded and reported in the same way). We'll talk about different types of initiatives, the reasons why proponents think it's a great idea, and what major concerns might come up. This week's episode features a fun conversation with Dr. Kwesi Daniels. We talk about his journey into the profession, various tools of the trade, and having a 'Guerilla bag'. His professional experience ranges across various disciplines, including historic preservation, architecture, sustainability management, and urban geography. He previously served as the Green Homes Coordinator for the New Jersey Housing and Mortgage Finance Agency. Within this capacity, he was responsible for "greening" affordable housing throughout the state by implementing renewable energy, energy efficiency, and green finance products, which developers could use to improve the sustainable performance of the properties within their portfolio. One of the best financial products he uncovered while working with the NJ-HMFA was the integration of green financing with historic preservation and affordable housing tax credits. The coupling of sustainable building features with the restoration of historic structures creates an excellent opportunity to address three needs- aging infrastructure in urban areas, the demand for affordable housing, and the pending changes from climate change. His groundbreaking working at the NJ-HMFA provided the foundation upon which he does his current work.In 2018 he began developing a historic preservation program at Tuskegee University, within the Robert R. Taylor School of Architecture and Construction Science. The goal is to train architecture and construction science management students to handle the nuances of historic properties. This preservation work has expanded the resources of Tuskegee into African-American communities in Selma, Montgomery, Birmingham, and Tuskegee, Ala. He and his students are currently working to preserve the Armstrong School in Macon County, Al, a Tuskegee rural school model building and precursor to the Rosenwald School program. Some of his civic work includes serving as an advisory board member for the UPenn Center for the Preservation of Civil Rights Heritage Sites, board member of the Rosenwald Park Campaign Advisory Council, and the 3rd Congressional District Representative of the Alabama Black Heritage Council. Dr. Daniels earned a BArch and MArch in architecture from Tuskegee University and the University of Illinois at Chicago and an MS in sustainability management from Columbia University. In 2020 he earned a Ph.D. in urban geography from Temple University. His doctoral research...

How easy or hard is it to talk about someone you loved and lost? Today we talk with Sherrie Barch, CEO of two Forbes' ranked top executive search firms and a leadership consulting company, and an expert in leadership, team development, and diversity. Sherrie's new book “Heaven's Bell” shows us how to talk about death. It was written for teens but enjoyed by people of all ages. “Ring to Remember”, the partner journal to the book was just released on Father's Day….with a special sign from above. Listen in to hear how to create a safe space to talk about Amy's favorite subject: death. Topics We Discuss: [3:35] How Sherrie's experience as a leader, having the difficult conversations, naturally led her to having the difficult conversations about death with young people. [6:18] Curiosity and creativity led CEO Sherrie to write “Heaven's Bell”, a fable about love and friendship that lasts beyond the physical body. Her own experiences informed her writing. [12:08] The importance of talking about death especially during COVID years, and especially with younger people. How Sherrie's story creates a safe place to experience and talk about one's emotions around grief and loss. [17:08] “Ring to Remember”, Sherrie's partner journal to the “Heaven's Bell” was created to keep the conversation going. Dedicated to her two father figures, it dropped on Father's Day. With school starting for many right now, we would look at books to help adults talk to children and teens about death and grief. First up, we talk with Sherrie Barch, author, speaker, and CEO of two Forbes' ranked top executive search firms and a leadership consulting company. She wrote Heaven's Bell to create a safe space for families to have a conversation about death and dying naturally and productively. Though the characters in the book fit the YA book genre, Heaven's Bell is a story that can be shared with most age groups. Sherrie has also released The Ring To Remember journal, the newest addition to the emotional safe space originally created by the Heaven's Bell book. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/faithandgrief/support
Author Sherrie Barch has a very accomplished professional resume in the areas of leadership and team development. Born and raised in Illinois, she earned B.A. and M.A. degrees in communication and has been the CEO of two Forbes' ranked top executive search firms and leadership consulting companies. Our focus will be on her children's book titled Heaven's Bell, which is a fictional story about the friendship between two children and what happens after one of them dies and goes to heaven. The story helps both children and adults deal with the often-avoided subjects of death and the resulting loss and pain we suffer. Most of us have personally suffered loss in our families and communities, whether due to the Covid pandemic or other illnesses and tragedies. Also, the news often depicts mass killings, including most recently of elementary school children. How do we talk about death, especially with our children, and bring healing? How do we talk about it with adults? Our discussion will give you hope that there is so much we can accomplish and many breakthroughs we can achieve by talking and sharing rather than avoiding and fearing. Her book is a very helpful tool that is being used not only by families, but also by hospices and school districts to discuss death and to bring healing. She also has an accompanying grief journal and memory book titled Ring to Remember. Susan, your host, welcomes Sherrie Barch to today's episode. Sherry is the CEO of two Forbes-ranked top executive search firms and a leadership consulting company. Sherrie is married with three sons. As a mom, she describes herself as a part-time pancreas for her two youngest sons who were both diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes within the same year. Playing this role for the last 12 years, she is relentlessly creating open and honest communication with her family and friends about this chronic and life-threatening condition. Sherrie's passion for storytelling was a strong motivation for her to publish her preteen children's book Heaven's Bell. One of her goals for Heaven's Bell is to create and inspire a safe space for families to have serious and sometimes “heavy” conversations about death and dying in a natural and productive way. Key Takeaways: Sherrie shares the motivation behind her book Heaven's Bell. Sherrie talks about the structure and message of the book. Peace and grief can be experienced together. Susan talks about what is necessary in order to process negative emotions. Children and adults grieve differently. Everyone grieves in their own way. Give permission to yourself to ask questions and create the space for others to start conversations about loved ones who passed away. Sherrie shares the pain of losing her father figure. Susan talks about how her daughter's school failed her terribly when she was grieving the loss of her father. Sherrie speaks about remote goodbyes. Celebrating the memory of someone you lost is not always easy, be present, be curious, and hold space to just listen to what someone grieving is going through. Grieve and, when you can, try to recall the one (or ones) you lost in your happy memories together, try to lean into those stories and feel a different connection with them. Sherrie is publishing a Grief Journal for families to capture memories, you can find it at Ring to Remember.
