You may have heard the saying: “The longest journey is the one from the head to the heart.” And it is also the most rewarding one. But how do you develop a deeper, heart-centered connection with yourself to navigate life with greater ease and grace? Meditating is undoubtedly an option many have found to be the key to unlocking your true self. But what if you find the stillness and the discipline of sitting calmly feels more frustrating than transformative? In today's episode of Empowerment Solutions, we explore a different path that can lead you to discover more about your true self - journaling, a gentle practice of self-awareness and reflection. My special guest today, Diana Raab, brings a wealth of experience and knowledge to this topic. — Storytelling dates back to the beginning of time. In fact, stories are perhaps the strongest bonds we have with other nations and races. Australian aborigines painted symbols from stories on cave walls to help storytellers remember their tales. The Egyptians were the first people to write down their stories; and the Romans, through their travels and conquests, were adept at disseminating stories. The purpose of storytelling is to share stories that unite us. Regardless of our culture, stories bring us together and bridge the gaps among us. They're also tools for learning and exchanging ideas. But, not all storytellers are created equal. Surely you've noticed that some people are wonderful storytellers, and others just make you yawn. The idea of storytelling is to relate events in words, images, sounds, and embellishments. It is a way to convey the emotional power of information. Author and professor Robert McKee, in his book Story, says, “Stories are equipment for living.” In fact, when a story is told well, the listener is transported on a journey to a new place. – Writes Diana Raab In this episode, Valeria Teles interviews her, Diana Raab — She is the author of Writing For Bliss: A Seven-Step Plan for Telling Your Story and Transforming Your Life. I have a secret to tell you, I am just a kid. When you see me looking out of my eyes at 90 I will still be just a child. Much of what we experience now comes from what we learned or experiences as a child. Everyone has an inner child. You might see this inner child as a direct representation of yourself in your early years, a patchwork collection of the developmental stages you've passed through, or a symbol of youthful dreams and playfulness. An awareness of your inner child can help you think back to lighter, carefree years, explains Dr. Diana Raab, author and research psychologist. “Being in touch with the joys of childhood can be an excellent way of dealing with challenging times.” Not everyone associates childhood with playfulness and fun, though. If you experienced neglect, trauma, or other emotional pain, your inner child might seem small, vulnerable, and in need of protection. You may have buried this pain deep to hide it and protect yourself — both your present self and the child you once were. Hiding pain doesn't heal it. Instead, it often surfaces in your adult life, showing up as distress in personal relationships or difficulty meeting your own needs. Working to heal your inner child can help you address some of these issues. Many people don't realize that they have a lost inner child who makes a lot of decisions in their adult life that the responsible adult self later has to clean up. They go about their lives on auto-pilot, impulsively reacting, yelling at the top of their lungs, withdrawing and sulking, or keeping others at arm's length because they are scared of emotional connection. They feel hurt, confused, abused, shamed, or neglected, just like they did as a child, but now they look and sound like an adult. In this episode we discuss the many aspects of your inner child and in a meditation at the end we go about healing your inner child. When considering any kind of change or incorporating a new practice into your life, whether it is writing for bliss, writing for therapy, or writing for transformation, I like to mention what Zen master Shunryu Suziki referred to in his book, Zen Mind, Beginner's Mind (1976), as maintaining the sensibility of the “beginner's mind.” The idea is that the beginner's mind tends to be open to many possibilities, unlike the expert's mind, which only sees few. Remaining open-minded and available for new ideas is important, in the same way that we might witness in young children, who are like sponges for learning. Having a beginner's mind is also about suspending your disbelief and going with the flow of your experience. Hopefully, when you have made the decision to engage in personal writing you've given yourself permission to take yourself on a voyage of self-discovery. This entails reviewing your life with a child's curiosity, awe, and simplicity. In so doing, there is a good chance that significant revelations will begin emerging from your subconscious mind. Writing with the magic mindset of a child can be a fun and poignant way to write and to unleash deep, dark, and surprising secrets. The art of writing for change is about setting out on a journey. Imagine yourself packing to visit a new land—one you've never visited before or one you have not visited in a long time. Be alert and mindful of the details of your landscape. Document them in your journal or on your computer. Don't worry about the direction of your musings; for the moment, simply accumulate them. You can decide later whether your writing will be for you alone, for prosperity, or for public sharing. – says Diana Raab In this episode, Valeria Teles interviews Diana, the author of WRITING FOR BLISS: A Seven-Step Plan for Telling Your Story and Transforming Your Life.
