This week on the Shuttle Pod, your podcast crew discuss what’s on the horizon for the Star Trek franchise. And, a lot is brewing. Oh Captain, My Captain (and Discovery Season 2) Earlier this week, CBS announced the casting of a well-known Star Trek character for Season 2 of Star Trek: Discovery sure to have the fan base buzzing. Anson Mount is set to play the determined Captain Pike of the USS Enterprise, a ship whose redesign we got a glimpse of at the tail end of the Season 1 finale. He certainly looks the part, but he’s got some piercing eyes to fill (have I stretched that metaphor too far?). The news comes after a deluge of cryptic clues about the next season of Discovery gleaned from panel appearances and interviews at last month’s WonderCon. Matt, Brian, and Kayla break down all we learned, with just a light dusting of pithy commentary. A Script Too Far For The Kelvinverse? While still not much more has come to light since we last spoke about the next Trek movie back in December (check out our podcast about that). There are some little bits of information that have come out as the Kelvin cast are out and about promoting other projects. Perhaps the biggest bit of information that’s come to light is that there are at least 2 possible pitches for the next movie: the Patrick McKay & JD Payne script JJ Abrams hyped during Beyond’s press junkets; and the Quentin Tarantino/Mark L. Smith project. We had suspected Pegg and Jung were asked for a sequel idea. In December 2016 Simon Pegg tweeted a tease of Simon and Doug sitting in the Bad Robot offices, but of course no context and no follow up. Pegg has now clarified that his tweet was not about Trek, saying: “Doug [Jung] and I were never going to write the fourth [Star Trek]. That was never the deal. Doug and I are doing something together at Bad Robot, which I probably can't talk about just yet.” Star Trek’s Real Life Parallel Universe: CBS/Paramount Many Trek fans know that Star Trek is a split franchise. CBS holds all of the television and merchandising rights, while Paramount makes the feature films. The companies have had a long and complicated history, and it seems they may be getting the family back together. CBS and Viacom (Paramount’s parent company and previous parent company to all of Star Trek) are currently in talks to merge back together. What does this mean for the franchise?

Renowned 'good' movie franchise Cloverfield has released a BRAND NEW film exclusively on Netflix a few weeks ago which was a big surprise to everybody. With the previous installments being held in very high regards by critics and fans, Paradox had big shoes to fill. While Oliver had seen the others, the 'Beyonce-Style' surprise drop left him just as ignorant about this new flick as Scott this week. With no expectations other than Oliver's previous knowledge of the franchise, can Paradox hold up to the high regard? Or would we prefer there be a hole in the spaceship that is the Cloverfield franchise where Paradox can be shot out into space to be long forgotten? And as always we cap off the show with some fun games. In this episode: The Fruit is Acute! See what all the fuss is about the latest entry in the Cloverfield "franchise." Does it deserve the hate, or are there hidden merits in this direct-to-Netflix movie that probably never needed to exist in the first place. The Cloverfield Paradox is directed by Julius Onah, was written by Oren Uziel and Doug Jung, and stars Daenarys' assistant from "Game of Thrones," the girl who kept stealing the sword in "Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon," and the Scottish dude from "IT Crowd." In this episode, we are doing things a bit differently! While the normal crew takes a bit of a break after covering the fall half of Star Trek: Discovery season one, we go to the Discussing Who archives for a review of the 2016 movie Star Trek Beyond! Join in as Kyle Jones, Lee Shackleford and Clarence Brown give their thoughts on the third Star Trek movie based in the Kelvin-universe!
"This is where the frontier pushes back." With JJ Abrams busy working on that other space franchise, the new Trek film needed a new director. And who better to bring on board than Justin Lin, the man who rejuvenated the Fast & Furious franchise. Yes, it meant he was going to bring his big action directing to this franchise. But was that a bad thing? It also meant there would be fewer lens flares. Was that a good thing? More importantly, it was Paramount's opportunity to celebrate 50 years since Gene Roddenberry's “Star Trek” started airing on TV, creating this future world that drew so many people to it. Join us – Pete Wright and Andy Nelson – as we close out our massive series with Lin's 2016 film Star Trek Beyond. We look at why we love this film so much, particularly since there are so many problems scattered throughout that we have with it. We contemplate Simon Pegg's and Doug Jung's script, wondering if perhaps Scotty might be stretching his legs more than he normally would because he's writing it. We debate whether Idris Elba's character Krall needed to have as much makeup as he has and if his motivations really make enough sense in the film for us not to worry about it. We discuss the spaceport Yorktown and revel in the beauty of it, notably because so much of it was filmed in Dubai. We ponder the future of the franchise, wondering how they're going to bring Chris Hemsworth back in the next one. And we praise Michael Giacchino and his beautiful score for this film, notably his somber use of his Star Trek theme as well as the new Yorktown theme he develops. All in all, it's been a fun franchise to dig into for the last 13 weeks, and this film was exactly the finish we needed – a film that may have issues but has its heart in the right place. We have a great time talking about it on this week's show. Check it out then tune in! The Next Reel – when the movie ends, our conversation begins. Lin, Part 2: Annapolis. Running Time: 1 hour 27 seconds After the success of Better Luck Tomorrow, Justin Lin was given the opportunity to work on big studio productions with substantially larger budgets. The first of these was Annapolis in 2006. The film, starring James Franco, Tyrese Gibson and Jordan Brewster, looks at a cadet's first year at the U.S. Naval Academy. In this episode of Commentary: Trek Stars, Mike and John take a look at Lin's second film. We discuss how it effectively uses cliches, the similarities to J.J. Abrams' Star Trek, and how accurately it portrays the Academy. In news, we remember TNG and DS9 visual effects supervisor Gary Hutzel, discuss the hiring of Rod Roddenberry and Trevor Roth as executive producers on the new Star Trek series, and touch on the order of Doug Jung's new pilot, Scalped. Doug Jung talks writing Beyond with Pegg. When we hear about the script for the next Star Trek film, we mostly here about Simon Pegg. But the actor pulling double duty as Chief Engineer Scott teamed up with Doug Jung to quickly pen a script that would keep production on schedule. In a recent episode of the Writer’s Bone podcast, the Star Trek Beyond co-writer explained what it was like penning a new story with Pegg and what they are trying to bring to Star Trek. We share our thoughts on his comments. Doug Jung: Confidence. Running Time: 46 minutes 9 seconds Much has been made of Simon Pegg's contribution to the screenplay for Star Trek Beyond. So much so, that people tend to forget that Pegg has a partner on the project, co-writer Doug Jung. In this episode of Commentary: Trek Stars, Mike and John take a look at Jung's first movie, Confidence. We discuss the film's intricate structure, its similarity to other films from the time period, and what it tells us about Jung's contribution to Beyond. We also remember TOS writer George Clayton Johnson. Season Three Top Five. Season 3 of The Original Series is not anyone's favorite season. Fortunately, there's still some good in it. In this episode of Standard Orbit, Mike and Drew each choose 5 favorite episodes from Season 3, surprisingly with very little crossover. There are several good concepts mediocrely executed. Does the whole season count as being "so bad it's good"? Is this where the anthology show concept loses its grip? Are there some genuinely good stories hiding in there? We also have a quick news segment where we talk about the new writers for Star Trek 2016, Simon Pegg and Doug Jung and if we think they'll be a good fit for the franchise based on their past works. Doug Jung joins Tim for a discussion of the Macintosh they built with the EFI-X V1 boot processing unit. The product enables the building of your own custom Macintosh and works somewhat as advertised, but reputed poor durability and consistently poor customer service from Art Studios Entertainment Media ruin what could have been a terrific customer experience. We even have a Fawlty Towers clip to illustrate ASEM's customer service style. You can find pictures of the V1 at the symbolically unusable EFI-X website onwww.efi-x.com(we're so disgusted with EFI-X that we won't directly link to them, you'll have to type the address manually)Unfortunately, you must register on the efi-x.com forums to read the complaints customers are having with the unit's fragile nature and ASEM's astounding indifference to the many valid criticisms of the product. To read alternate, and in our opinion more accurate, information about the EFI-X V1 and V1.1, and to find possible alternatives, go towww.efixusers.comEmail from listener Alan closes the episode.
