J.D. Payne & Patrick McKay have been writing together for nearly 25 years, collaborating on over 20 screenplays, including STAR TREK BEYOND for J.J. Abrams, JUNGLE CRUISE for Disney, and their 2017 Blacklist script ESCAPE. In season two of their show, THE RINGS OF POWER, Sauron has returned. Cast out by Galadriel, without army or ally, the rising Dark Lord must now rely on his own cunning to rebuild his strength and oversee the creation of the Rings of Power, which will allow him to bind all the peoples of Middle-earth to his sinister will. Building on season one's epic scope and ambition, the new season plunges even its most beloved and vulnerable characters into a rising tide of darkness, challenging each to find their place in a world that is increasingly on the brink of calamity. In this interview, we talk about their collaborative partnership, the process of pitching the LORD OF THE RINGS series, their approach to adapting Tolkien's work, and balancing the needs of both die-hard fans and new viewers.

In a tragic case that shocked the nation, Denali Brehmer, a 24-year-old woman from Alaska, has been sentenced to 99 years in prison for her role in the murder of her 19-year-old friend Cynthia Hoffman back in 2019. The sentencing marks the culmination of a disturbing catfishing scheme that led to the untimely death of Hoffman, who was described by her father as having developmental disabilities and who considered Brehmer to be her closest companion. The chilling events unfolded when Hoffman went missing during a hike at Thunderbird Falls, Alaska, accompanied by Brehmer and another friend. Two days later, her lifeless body was discovered along the banks of a river, bound with duct tape and fatally shot in the back of the head. The investigation into Hoffman's murder revealed a harrowing web of deceit orchestrated by a man named Darin Schilmiller, based in Indiana, who had allegedly catfished Hoffman under the guise of a wealthy benefactor named "Tyler." Schilmiller offered Brehmer a staggering $9 million to carry out the murder and provide him with photos and videos of the crime. Brehmer, along with another friend, Kayden McIntosh, who was 18 at the time, allegedly drove Hoffman to the remote location where McIntosh shot her after she was duct-taped and posed for disturbing photographs. While Brehmer did not physically pull the trigger, prosecutors argued that her active participation in the planning and execution of the crime made her equally culpable for Hoffman's death. Patrick McKay, the prosecutor handling the case, emphasized Brehmer's integral role in the murder, stating, "She may not have pulled the trigger, but this never would have happened if it weren't for Denali Brehmer." McIntosh, who faces murder charges, is still awaiting trial, while another individual connected to the case, Caleb Leyland, has pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and awaits sentencing. Additionally, two other teens involved in the incident were prosecuted in juvenile court for their alleged roles. Brehmer's sentencing to 99 years in prison was met with somber reflection from Timothy Hoffman, Cynthia's father, who lamented the loss of his daughter and the betrayal by someone she considered a friend. "My daughter just wanted friends, and now I have to bury her," Hoffman expressed during a court appearance in 2019. The case serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of online manipulation and the devastating consequences that can arise from sinister schemes, leaving a community grappling with grief and seeking justice for a life tragically cut short. I am a GIANT fan of pretty much anything that has to do with J.R.R. Tolkien!! I started reading with Lord of the Rings all the way back in elementary school! Naturally, I would move onto The Hobbit, and then try my hand at Unfinished Tales, and The Silmarillion! Today's topic is all about the Prime Video series that is expanding this universe in a great way! We're talking about The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power! "The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power is an American fantasy television series based on the novel The Lord of the Rings and its appendices by J. R. R. Tolkien. Developed by showrunners J. D. It is produced by Amazon Studios in cooperation with HarperCollins and New Line Cinema, and in consultation with the Tolkien Estate." Getting to learn about Galadriel, Elendil, Elrond, Durin, Isildur, and SO MANY amazing Tolkien universe characters has been great! We're definitely not the kind of podcast that nit picks everything we talk about to death, instead deciding to try and enjoy as much as we can! Yes, this series is not a page by page depiction of what happens in the 2nd age, but there is no possible way that it could be, with the rights that were purchased. Instead, it's visually appealing, the acting is fine, and it's expanding something that we as nerds love. All of those points are enough for us to sit back and enjoy what we're seeing on our TV screens! SUBSCRIBE: Apple Podcasts | Android | Spotify | Pandora | RSS Tell us what you think! Welcome to Episode 4 of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power titled THE GREAT WAVE. A lot to talk about this episode. Brian and Joe definitely are feeding more fuel to the Halbrand is Sauron fire in this one. And we all got pretty emotional over the Elrond and Durin storyline in this episode. Tons to break down in this podcast and we're only halfway into the season. Please remember to subscribe, rate and review! You can email us at PCLOTRpod@gmail.com and follow us on Twitter @PCLOTR. Brian and Jake host Pop Culture Leftovers podcast. Listen to Joe Stark on StarkCast podcast. And Billy can be seen on The Reality Guys on YouTube. Alan and Shawn reveal details about their conversations with J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay at the Amazon event in London last month. From citing Tolkien's letters and understanding 'the core of the original' to the importance of avoiding allegory and "peak bleak", the showrunners -- and John Howe! -- were able to give us lots of reasons for our continued optimism!
