Joshua 14:1-5 speak of the allocation of the tribal inheritances west of the river Jordan. Verses 6-15 deal with the request and allotting to Caleb, the great man of faith who wholly believed and wholeheartedly trusted Yahweh his God together with Joshua. Caleb was not a natural born Israelite. He was a Kennite and from a tribal group who faithfully chose to journey to the Promised Land with the people of the LORD that they too might share Yahweh's blessings for His people. Caleb at 85 years old is as vigorous and eager as he was at 40 years of age. Then, as at this time, Caleb trusted in the help of the Almighty to go and take Hebron, meaning fellowship. This city was the place where the patriarchal family settled in the land and sojourned in faith with their God. That city had belonged to the greatest giant of the Anakim – Arba. Caleb stands in contrast to his fearful brethren who cowered at the thought of fighting against the giants of Canaan. Isaiah chapters 19-20 contain prophecies concerning Egypt. Isaiah 19:1-4 tell of the time that nears when the Almighty's hand of judgment will be felt by the Egyptians. The LORD says that He will put them under a fierce overlord. I believe that this will be the time spoken of in Daniel 11:40-43. This said Daniel would be at the time of the end when the Northern confederacy of nations will invade the Middle East. Verses 5-10 describe the predicament of the Egyptian industries particularly for the fishermen of the Nile whose harvest has been destroyed by the construction of the Aswan dam in lower Egypt. Verses 11-15 lament the bringing low of the once great superpower of the Middle East. Verses 16-25 outline a time of blessing for Egypt together with two of the former superpowers of that region – Assyria and Egypt. And although these 3 nations will be blessed in Messiah's kingdom Israel's status as the covenant people of the Lord God Almighty make her the head of the nations as the prophet Zechariah tells us in chapter 8:20-23. Isaiah 19:23 tells us that there will be in Israel a place of worship to the Living God whose Son rules from Jerusalem. The epistle of Titus was written between Paul's first imprisonment spoken of in 1 Timothy and his final imprisonment and execution anticipated in 2 Timothy 4. The three chapters contain wonderful information about individual lives in the service of Christ.The letter appears to be written after Paul's release from the first Roman imprisonment, when he was under house arrest for two years as Acts 28 records. After this conditions for believers in Christ became far worse, as Nero blamed them for the great fire in Rome. 2 Timothy outlines some of the consequences of this with Paul being arrested at Ephesus and accused of being the ring leader of the ‘christians' and therefore the prime instigator of the fire. Paul had following his house arrest in Rome and prior to the great fire been released and undertaken a fifth missionary journey. Paul journeyed with Titus to Crete to establish the ecclesias. This journey left the task of organising those ecclesias so the Apostle Paul left Titus at Crete for this. The book of Titus starts with the qualifications that should apply to an elder of the believers. These elders were to be faithful and experienced brothers. Verse 9 tells us that some of the elders were also overseers. Verses 10-11 of chapter 1 tells of the insubordination of many of the Cretians. The gluttony, idleness and falseness of these islanders was legendary in the Roman world. Paul ironically speaks of the Cretian paradox that their poet, Epimenides, spoke claiming all Cretians liars, and yet in this he himself a Cretian was telling the truth. Paul tells Titus to firmly rebuke the Cretians as their behaviour was unacceptable in any follower of Christ. The first chapter concludes by telling us that the pure in mind must not have their words and actions tainted by double standards – likewise those who are double minded corrupt others said the Apostle. Chapter 2 commences with instructions to young men, such as Titus (v1); older men (v2); older sisters (Vv3-5) – including that they were teaching the younger women in both word and, even more importantly, by example (cp 1 Corinthians 11 verses 1). In verses 6-8 he tells the young men that they are to be shining examples of followers of Christ. Slaves, who comprised two thirds of the Roman world, are told in verses 10-11 that by honesty and diligence they prove that they are believers and, by such behaviour, they enhanced the reputation of true disciples. There is an emphasis in the letter on the letter on “soundness” (literally, not only being healthy, but more so that which promotes and imparts health). How meaningful is this given that the name Titus signifies “nurse”. The book reminds us of little things, many of which are important. Don't forget the little things, which demonstrate tender care for fellow saints. We could do no better than to fix our minds and meditate on our sober responsibility to live expectantly of our Master's return as Titus 2 verses 11-14 urges us. The fifth of the faithful sayings occurs in chapter 3 verse 8, “Those who have believed God must be careful to be forward (Greek word indicates a proud store holder, who proudly stands in front of his/her quality produce) in good works”. Immaturity and the Spirit's Work - Boasting in Association (Ch 3) 3:1-4 - Corinthians as Infants V1-2 - In contradiction to 2:6, Paul addresses Corinth as infants, not ready for the meat that is fed to the mature; that is, the Spiritual teaching of chapter 2. V3-4 - 2:13 explained to us that Spiritual Wisdom is taught by the Holy Spirit to those “of the Spirit”. Paul condemns the Corinthians for behaving as if they were still “of the flesh”, and with a bit of sarcasm calls their best attempts at achievement “merely human”. 3:5-16 - The Field, The Building and the Temple V5-6 - Much of our attention has been to the leaders or dividers in the church. Paul has used the name Apollos mostly for his example, but we have to read carefully because now he wants the church to get their minds off the factions. Just as he mocks their best attempts at wisdom as “merely human,” now he's going to take their favorite leaders and reduce them to “servants.” Paul and Apollos, far from upper class, eloquent philosophers, instead play the role of planters and waterers. V7 - God himself is producing fruit. The evidence of the Spirit in the church isn't from their associations, but directly from their intimate union with God, producing out of their bellies, rivers of living water. V8 - The fellow workers should be one in mind and judgment (per chapter 1) and not drawing you apart from each other. V9 - Along with verse 21, the apostle uses three illustrations to turn the focus onto the people and not the leaders. We are workers, but you are God's project. He wants they: God's field God's building God's temple V10 - Paul switches from planter/watered to founder/builder, but it's the same point he made prior. V11-15 - These verses have a dual meaning. Primarily, it's a warning to the teachers. Practically, it is an instruction for each person's own life. V10 - Care must be taken while our lives are built. Once and done salvation is not Paul's Gospel. See again all of chapter 2. V11 - He reiterates that Christ (crucified) is the only foundation (2:2). V12 - Two building materials: Gold etc. - The Spiritual teaching of 2:2, 10, 16 Wood etc. - Boasting in status, association, accomplishment V13 - The Day is referenced in 1:7-8. More than the Second Coming, it's the new day, the final day, the day of no hiddenness, the day of purging, of knowing, of seeing, faith becoming sight, transformation, transfiguration, cumulation, totality. On that day light will flood the darkness. All will be known, judged and made right. Everything will be touched by fire (The Holy Spirit). V14 - What has been built by the Spirit through the cross of Jesus in us will return to us a reward. V15 - What has been built by boasting will result in total loss, pain and ruin, but that fire itself will save us. V16-17 - Paul moves to the pinnacle of his argument which will lead us into the next few chapters. We are God's temple. Along with 1:18 and 2:7-9, this passage is an anchor point in the book. Paul has crafted a two point argument: First, the things we seek for ourselves are so much lower than what God is doing. Second, if we are each part of this temple, we ought to be careful how we treat that temple. V18-20 - Paul reiterates his earlier thesis. 3:18-23 - The Church is and has All Things That are Christ's V21-23 - Paul concludes what he began at the start of his field/building/temple illustration. Why boast in your association when what you essentially are is so much greater already? Why boast in status when your lowly status is what saved you (ch 1)? Why search for secret wisdom that turns out to be merely human (ch 3)? John 11:1 Now a certain man was sick, Lazarus of Bethany, the town of Mary and her sister Martha. 2 It was that Mary who anointed the Lord with fragrant oil and wiped His feet with her hair, whose brother Lazarus was sick. 3 Therefore the sisters sent to Him, saying, "Lord, behold, he whom You love is sick." 4 When Jesus heard that, He said, "This sickness is not unto death, but for the glory of God, that the Son of God may be glorified through it." This is another section of Scripture which we find to be so familiar to us, but as in all Bible Study we need to look deeper than the surface of what is going on here. Lazarus is a man that Jesus loves, as He does all of His children, the ones who have trusted Him as Savior. But he also loves the sisters Mary and Martha, yet he allows them to go through trouble because ultimately He will be glorified in the end. That is why the Bible says we exist. Ecclesiastes 12:13 Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God and keep His commandments, For this is man's all. One man put it this way, we exist to glorify God and praise Him forever. How do we do this? By first of all reverencing God and keeping His commandments. Second we do this by becoming more like Him every day. Romans 8:28-29, And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose. For whom He foreknew, He also predestined to be conformed to the image of His Son, that He might be the firstborn among many brethren. God is bringing us back to the place we were at in the Garden of Eden before man's fall and our sinfulness dragged us down. The only way God can do this is by allowing us to go through trials that make us more like Him. So, have you looked at your situation and said that this is not something that is ultimately bad, but through it God is going to be glorified because I am trusting in Him and He will never leave me nor forsake me (Hebrews 13:5) Death is the great horror which sin has produced (Rom. 5:12; James 1:15). Physical death is the divine object lesson of what sin does in the spiritual realm. As physical death ends life and separates people, so spiritual death is the separation of people from God and the loss of life which is in God (John 1:4). Jesus has come so that people may live full lives (10:10). This chapter with Lazarus being raised is the demonstration of John 10:10 Rejecting Jesus means that one will not see life (3:36) and that his final destiny is “the second death,” the lake of fire (Rev. 20:14-15). 1 ¶ Now a certain man was sick, Lazarus (name means one whom God Helps) of Bethany, the town of Mary and her sister Martha. This Bethany ("house of the suffering) is about two miles (11:18) east of Jerusalem on the southeast slope of Olivet and is now called El Azariyeh, from the name Lazarus. Lit. Place of Lazarus When John wrote, it was as Jesus had foretold (Matt. 26:13), for the fame of Mary of Bethany rested on the incident of the anointing of Jesus. Luke 10:38-42, where Martha was distressed because Mary was not helping her prepare the meal. Lu 10:38 Now it happened as they went that He entered a certain village; and a certain woman named Martha welcomed Him into her house. 39 And she had a sister called Mary, who also sat at Jesus' feet and heard His word. 40 But Martha was distracted with much serving, and she approached Him and said, "Lord, do You not care that my sister has left me to serve alone? Therefore tell her to help me." 41 And Jesus answered and said to her, "Martha, Martha, you are worried and troubled about many things. 42 "But one thing is needed, and Mary has chosen that good part, which will not be taken away from her." 2 It was that Mary who anointed the Lord with fragrant oil and wiped His feet with her hair, whose brother Lazarus was sick. 3 Therefore the sisters sent to Him, saying, "Lord, behold, he whom You love is sick." It is true the Martha and Mary do not specifically ask Jesus to do anything, but the word “look” or “behold” is not used lightly (see John 1:29, 36, 47; 3:26; 5:14; 7:26; 11:36; 12:19; 16:29; 18:21; 19:4, 14, 26, 27). They expect Jesus to drop everything and come to Bethany to heal him. 4 When Jesus heard that, He said, "This sickness is not unto death, but for the glory of God, that the Son of God may be glorified through it." John 1:14 The words recorded in verse 4 are not spoken solely for the benefit of those who overhear this conversation between Jesus and the messenger, but as a message for this messenger to take back to Martha and Mary. Notice our Lord's words to Martha later in this same account: 39 Jesus said, “Take away the stone.” Martha, the sister of the deceased, replied, “Lord, by this time the body will have a bad smell, because he has been buried four days.” 40 Jesus responded, “Didn't I tell you that if you believe, you would see the glory of God?” V11:39-40 Verse 4 is our Lord's response to Martha and Mary, sent back by the same messenger who brought word to Him of Lazarus' grave condition. This crisis has a divinely intended purpose—to bring glory to God the Father through the glorification of the Son of God. If we grant that the words of verse 40 are also sent to the women by the messenger, Jesus also encourages them to have faith, so that they too will see God glorified in all these things. I am convinced that this is not what the women “hear” the messenger say when he returns without Jesus. I believe they “hear” (i.e., understand) the messenger say, “Jesus told me to tell you that Lazarus will not die.” The problem is that by the time the messenger returns to the women, Lazarus may already have died. Can you imagine their bewilderment if this is the case? They have already suffered the torment of Lazarus' death and burial. Then, the messenger returns with word from Jesus which appears to assure them that Lazarus won't die! Their faith in Jesus is really put to the test. In this Gospel, God's "glory" is usually a reference to His self-revelation rather than the praise that comes to Him (cf. 1:14-18; 5:23; 12:28; 17:4).401 Ironically this miracle displayed Jesus' identity as God's Son, but it also led to His death that was the ultimate manifestation of His identity and glory. Mark 8:36 "For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul? John 14:6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me. Have you trusted Him as your Savior? He can Save you if You ask Him based on His death, burial, and resurrection for your sins. As we continue with the series on Resilience, Pastor Tammy takes us through a thought provoking sermon on perseverance, overcoming obstacles and martyrdom. We are taught to be resilient so that we can overcome, but how can we do that when we are faced with so much adversary? Revelation 12 gives us some clues about how overcomers are RESILIENT. Revelation 12:10-11 NKJV ‘Then I heard a loud voice saying in heaven, “Now salvation, and strength, and the kingdom of our God, and the power of His Christ have come, for the accuser of our brothers and sisters, who accused them before our God, day and night, has been cast down. And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony, and they did not love their lives to the death.' First way that we become resilient is to be: 1. CONSISTENT:Satan will accuse us and make us feel guilty and this in turn makes us STOP. He is an accuser, and that's what he is always doing, so it's important that we don't try to fight him with our own strength. We don't fight accusations with good works, because accusations will keep coming. The key is understanding the BLOOD OF THE LAMB. We need to stand firm on what Jesus did for us and focus on His works and not our own. We cannot overcome it by ourselves. Scripture teaches us that ‘They overcame him by the BLOOD OF THE LAMB.' V11. That is how we overcome. We don't fight with good works, we fight it with our identity in God. When we fight with our IDENTITY, instead of stopping we become CONSISTENT. Therefore, it's important that we don't let ACCUSATIONS STOP us. Instead, we must live in the victory that what the devil is accusing us of is forgiven.Too many we mess up or fall into sin, and then we struggle to get up again, we struggle with being resilient because we allow the accusations to make us stop instead of understanding that we are still the Children of God because of the Blood of the Lamb, we are accepted. 2. CONFESS THE TRUTH Along with ACCUSATIONS, comes DECEPTION. Deception is everywhere. The devil is trying to drive out the truth from this world. He is trying to drive it out of schools, out of society, even out of the church. However, this should not make us scared, it should not make us silent. We learn that we can overcome through our testimony: That is our key.Even scripture says that they: ‘Overcame him by the word of their testimony.' V11. o Their TestimonyThe Greek word Marturia - the original meaning is that of a witness in a law court. Someone who has direct and personal experience of events in which he took part, or of persons he met, and testifies in court as to what he has seen or heard. Picture the scene:Satan before God accusing us, and you step up and share your testimony, and the accusations are slashed. The TRUTH wins because of your confession.A friend of yours struggling in their relationship with God because of challenges, and you share your testimony of how God got you through the difficult time, and your friend's faith is renewed.The TRUTH wins because of our confession. Our testimony is not just words, but it's declaring, to everything unseen, what God has done, so our testimony becomes a power and a treasure, but we need to talk, confess.The Greek word marturia comes from the word martyr. If we stand for truth, even for good works, we will experience Martyrdom in some way. Maybe that's why we are so shy to speak - we know that something isn't the truth, but we struggle to talk because there will be a cost.However, If we remain silent, the deceit from the devil's kingdom advances and the truth of God's Kingdom diminishes. It's important to note that, we become resilient when we know and confess the truth to ourselves and those around us. 3. BE COURAGEOUS Not only do we have ACCUSATIONS and DECEPTION against us but also VIOLENCE. Violence can make us shrink back and be satisfied with LESS THAN, we even become cynical. Trauma does that - violence does that. It makes us step away to find the safest place and stay there. However, we need to be courageous, we need to be strong and brave. Scripture teaches us that: The KEY is ‘They did not love their lives to death.' No one is saying that we all need to go and do God's work in the most dangerous places, but it means we need to be obedient without shrinking back and clinging to our lives. It is true that in the martyr we have the fullest practical token of that spirit of devotion to Christ which loves Him more than life itself; but the spirit of such devotion and such love has breathed in thousands who have never died the martyr's death, but who have devoted their lives to Him they loved. The martyr spirit needs not death to show itself; many lose their lives for Christ's sake who have never been called to lay down their lives for Him, and these, as truly as those who have passed away in the shroud of flame, have loved not their lives unto the death (Enduring Word). Food For thought: - Accusation - Stop Or Be Consistent- Deception - Silent Or Confess The Truth- Violence - Shrink Back Or Be CourageousFinally, John on Patmos: Revelation 12:11 ‘They overcame by the blood of the Lamb (He had witnessed Jesus' blood running and the accusations yet he did not stop), by the Word of their testimony (He had testified of Jesus' life and words, proclaiming the truth, against deception and recorded them, he was not silent), and did not love his life unto death (Jesus shares His revelations with John whilst on Patmos in captivity, and John receives it because in His trauma/violence, he did not shrink back) Questions To Ponder On:- Where are you? - Is the devil winning in your life? - Have you stopped, become silent or shrunk back? - Is it time to live the life Christ has called you too? -Is it time for you to be consistent, confess the truth and be courageous?

In 1994, Kris found rock climbing, and after a decade as a trad climber, and a short break from climbing, discovered the joy of the gymnastic movement that is sport climbing and bouldering. To make up for the time away from the sport, at age 33, Kris began to get serious about training for climbing. At 40, he climbed his first 5.14, and at 44, his first V11, both of which are grades that seemed mythical when he first began climbing. He doesn't believe that the progression will end there. Seeing his success, Kris's friends asked for training plans. Then readers of the blog asked for training plans. Now he's written plans for thousands of climbers all over the world, and gets just as much satisfaction from their successes as he does his own. No capítulo vinte e sete de Gênesis, vemos uma das histórias mais incrível da Bíblia, onde Isaque abençoa Jacó, achando que estava abençoando a Esaú. Não podemos esquecer que Deus é Senhor Soberano sobre todas as coisas, e Soberano e Senhor sobre a história e que o propósito para cada um de nós é conhecido pelo Senhor Deus. Vemos aqui que a intenção de Isaque era abençoar o seu filho Esaú o primogênito, nós vemos que esse direito de primogenitura foi vendido por Esaú a Jacó, mas aqui Isaque ia abençoar a Esaú. Esaú não menciona aqui vender seu direito de primogenitura a Jacó. Isaque quer abençoar porque sabe que seus dias estão chegando ao fim. Como herdeiro de Abraão, como filho da promessa, quer perpetuar essa benção impetrando sobre a vida de Esaú. (V11). Mas Jacó teme o plano de Rebeca! Rebeca ouve que Isaque quer abençoar a Esaú, mas Rebeca tem a Jacó como como seu preferido, além disso Esaú tem um estilo de vida que fere muito o coração de seus pais, principalmente o coração de Rebeca, fazendo-a a preferir ainda mais Jacó. Quando ela soube que Isaque queria abençoar a Esaú, ela arquitetou logo um plano, ela incentivou Jacó a participar de um plano para que Jacó recebesse a bênção no lugar do seu irmão Esaú. Mas ao ouvir o plano Jacó fica com medo: (V 13), Rebeca assume toda a responsabilidade e todas as consequências que viessem a ter e cair sobre a vida de Jacó, ela assumiu toda a culpa de seu plano diante de Jacó, dizendo: não se preocupe eu lido com tudo. (V 20), Vocês percebem que eles acabam colocando Deus na bagunça deles. Vimos aqui que Rebeca e Jacó prepararam uma espécie de disfarce. Jacó vestiu as roupas de Esaú, colocou pelo de animal nos braços para ficar peludo, o cheiro de Esaú enfim, ele se disfarçou de Esaú e foi até seu pai Isaque receber a bênção em lugar de Esaú. Isaque percebeu algo estranho, que tinha um tempo para que Esaú conseguisse pegar a caça e preparar e levar para seu pai. Ao levá-lo até Isaque foi muito rápido que ele estranhou a resposta de Jacó, é o Senhor o seu Deus mandou ao meu encontro, colocando Deus no meio dessa bagunça. Deus não trabalha dessa forma, queremos colocar Deus do nosso jeito e mandar a conta para Deus, não podemos e não devemos fazer isso.

INTRODUCTION In verses 1-4 of this second chapter, Paul wrote about "The Unity That Produces Joy", in which he described: The MOTIVATION for having this unity The NATURE of this unity The ATTITUDES necessary to have this unity In describing the latter, he called upon the Philippians to: Do nothing through selfish ambition or conceit Have lowliness of mind in which they esteem others better than themselves Look out for the interests of others, and not only those of their own In verse 5, Paul continues to exhort them to have "this mind" (the attitudes of verses 3-4), pointing out that this is also the "mind of Christ" In verses (6-11), Paul defines the "mind of Christ" (or the attitude of Christ v6 Jesus did not have SELFISH AMBITION OR CONCEIT He abandoned a Sovereign Position PRIOR TO HIS INCARNATION or coming in human flesh Jesus was "in the form of God" The word form in Greek is morphe- the essence or literally the essential nature of something In other words, He has always existed as God – John 8:56 "Your father Abraham rejoiced to see My day, and he saw it and was glad." 57 Then the Jews said to Him, "You are not yet fifty years old, and have You seen Abraham?" 58 Jesus said to them, "Most assuredly, I say to you, before Abraham was, I AM." John 1:1-3 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was in the beginning with God. 3 All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made. 14 And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth. 15 John bore witness of Him and cried out, saying, "This was He of whom I said, ‘He who comes after me is preferred before me, for He was before me. 16 And of His fullness we have all received, and grace for grace. 17 For the law was given through Moses, but grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. Col 1:15 He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. 16 For by Him all things were created that are in heaven and that are on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or powers. All things were created through Him and for Him. 17 And He is before all things, and in Him all things consist. He was also "equal with God" John 1:1 3 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 1John 5:7 For there are three that bear witness in heaven: the Father, the Word, and the Holy Spirit; and these three are one. V6 YET CHRIST DID NOT CONSIDER SUCH EQUALITY "ROBBERY"... Literally, "a thing to be grasped"; that is, something to be laid hold of, and retained jealously Isaiah 14:12 "How you are fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! How you are cut down to the ground, You who weakened the nations! 13 For you have said in your heart: ‘I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God; I will also sit on the mount of the congregation On the farthest sides of the north; 14 I will ascend above the heights of the clouds, I will be like the Most High.' 15 Yet you shall be brought down to Sheol, To the lowest depths of the Pit. The "glory" of equality with God which Christ enjoyed from eternity was not something He felt like He HAD to cling on to A true demonstration of a lack of selfish ambition and conceit on the part of our Lord! Jesus LOOKED OUT FOR THE INTERESTS OF OTHERS (7-8) He took a servant's place and approached a sinful people WHEN CHRIST BECAME FLESH... V7 1. He "made Himself of no reputation" John 4:24 "God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth." Some versions say, "emptied Himself” this is the Kenosis or self-emptying Jn 17:5 And now, O Father, glorify Me together with Yourself, with the glory which I had with You before the world was. First of all, He gave up His heavenly glory. He gave up His heavenly glory. He dove into the water and went all the way down to the black cold water to the slime and the ooze of this world. And that's why He cries out in John 17 and says, "Father, restore Me to the glory I had with You before the world began." Glory when He was face to face with God. He gave up His glory for the muck of this earth. He gave up the worship of angels, the adoring presence of angels for the spittle of men. He gave up all of the shining brilliance of the glories of heaven for the dark prison where He was kept before His death. Yes, He emptied out His glory in that sense. Secondly, He emptied Himself of independent authority. I don't understand how the trinity operates. I know it operates in perfect harmony. In addition, I know that in perfect harmony, there would be no discord and no disagreement and that would be the way it is in the trinity. Nonetheless, in some way mysterious to my mind, which I will never understand, He completely submitted Himself to the will of the Father. I will never understand that and I don't want you to even think about it too long or you'll be under the bed saying the Greek alphabet because it does not compute. However, the point is He laid aside a voluntary exercise of His own will and He learned to be a servant and He submitted Himself. In addition, He was obedient, it says in verse 8. He was obedient. I don't understand that but He was obedient. In the garden He says, "Not My will but Thine be done." He learned obedience by the things He suffered, Hebrews 5 says. He said I am...I am come to do the Father's will, John 5:30. Therefore, He set aside His independent authority. Thirdly, He set aside the prerogatives of His deity. Alternatively, He set aside the voluntary use of His attributes. You say, "Did He stop being omniscient?" No. "Did He stop being omnipresent?" No. "Did He stop being unchangeable God?" No. He didn't stop being anything; He just didn't use those attributes. Some have said He gave up the prerogatives of His deity. I know He was omniscient. He knew everything because He knew what was in the heart of a man, John 2. I know He was omnipresent because He saw Nathaniel when He wasn't even where Nathaniel was in His human form. He didn't give up any of His deity but He gave up the free exercise of those attributes and limited Himself to the point where in Matthew 24:36 He says, "No man knows when the Son of Man will come," not men and not even the Son of Man. He restricted His omniscience. So He gave up the rights of His deity. Fourthly, He gave up His personal riches...He gave up His personal riches. Though He was rich yet for your sakes He became poor, 2 Corinthians 8:9, that you through His poverty might be made rich. He became terribly poor in this world...terribly poor. He had nothing...nothing. And then lastly, , He gave up a favorable relationship to God. "He who knew no sin was made sin for us...He who knew no sin was made sin for us." And as a result, He says, "My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?" He gave up a favorable relationship to God. Though He gave up the full expression of his heavenly glory and the full enjoyment of it, though He gave up independent authority and exercise of His own will and learned obedience, though He gave up the prerogatives to express all of the majesty of all of His attributes which He could have done, by the way, and though He gave up personal riches for the poverty of this world and though He gave up a favorable relationship with God when He was made sin, He never ceased to be God, never. He remained fully God. He remained fully God. He took upon Himself "the form of a servant" – same word Morphe, literally became a servant. John 13:3 Jesus, knowing that the Father had given all things into His hands, and that He had come from God and was going to God, 4 rose from supper and laid aside His garments, took a towel and girded Himself. 5 After that, He poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples' feet, and to wipe them with the towel with which He was girded. Mark 10:45 “For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many." He came in the likeness of men He was the same as a man, but different in that He was sinless Likeness means He was truly human, wept, got hungry, tired in all ways like us but without sin He could experience their temptations and sufferings – He 2:17-18 17 Therefore, in all things He had to be made like His brethren, that He might be a merciful and faithful High Priest in things pertaining to God, to make propitiation for the sins of the people. 18 For in that He Himself has suffered, being tempted, He is able to aid those who are tempted. V8 And being found in appearance as a man – He looked like us because He was like us. He "humbled Himself and became obedient to the point of death, even the death of the cross" Galatians 3:13 Christ has redeemed us from the curse of the law, having become a curse for us (for it is written, "Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree") DO WE HAVE "THE MIND OF CHRIST"? We do, if we are looking out for the interests of others We do, if we are willing to humble ourselves, even sacrifice ourselves if it be in the best interests of others 1Jn 3:16 By this we know love, because He laid down His life for us. And we also ought to lay down our lives for the brethren. III. Jesus is HIGHLY EXALTED BY GOD (9-11) – He ascended as a Supreme Prince V9 JESUS is a good example of Matthew 23:12: "He that humbles himself shall be exalted" 1Peter 5:6 Therefore humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you in due time, For God has highly exalted Jesus By giving Him "the name LORD which is above every name" Ac 4:12 "Nor is there salvation in any other, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved." V10 that at His name "every knee should bow...that every tongue should confess" He is Lord! - 2Th 1:10 when He comes, in that Day, to be glorified in His saints and to be admired among all those who believe, because our testimony among you was believed. V11 and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. Romans 8:18 For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us. We have seen in this passage that "The Mind Of Christ" involves... Humility Obedience Sacrifice Great Reward It was Christmas Eve in the Midwest. There was a man who had been in a family where his wife and his children were Christians but he was not. And he rejected it. He sat home that Christmas eve in front of the fire. It was cold out and the snow was blowing. His wife and the little children had gone to the chapel in the nearby village for a Christmas Eve service to honor the Christ they loved. He sat by the fire reading the paper. All of a sudden, he heard a loud and repeated thumping. He thought someone was banging on the door. He went to the door and opened it but found no one was there. By the time he got settled back into his chair, he heard it again and again. And he was bewildered as to what was causing it until he realized that something seemed to be smashing against the window. And so he went to the drapes and he pulled the drapes aside and to his amazement, a flock of birds was flying into the window. A snowstorm, you see, had blown in. And the birds had been caught away from their shelter and they couldn't find their way back. They couldn't fight the wind. They saw the lighted window and the warmth of the light had attracted them. And they were literally flying into the glass trying to get to the light to get warm. They would freeze to death, you see, if they didn't find some shelter. Well, the man who had refused to go with his family to the Christmas Eve service because he had no interest in the Christ of Christmas was all of a sudden very compassionate for these poor birds. And so he wondered how he could help them. And so he opened the door, went out in the cold, and tried to chase them away so that they wouldn't kill themselves against the window. And then he ran to the barn and he threw the doors open and he whistled and he shooed them and did everything he could to get them to fly to the barn, they wouldn't do it. He even went so far as to take some corn and some bread and make a big trail from the window to the barn. And they wouldn't follow it. In frustration, he said to himself, "If I could just communicate with them. If I could just tell them that I don't want to hurt them, that there's warmth and there's shelter and that they'd need to stop beating themselves to death against the glass. But I'm a man and they're birds and we don't speak the same language. Oh, if I could just become a bird, I think I could tell them." And then it hit him. And in that moment, said Paul Harvey, the whole meaning of Christmas dawned on that man. Mankind had been beating itself to death against the barrier that kept him from the warmth of God's love until somebody became a man and told us the way. Mark 8:36 "For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul? John 14:6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. Quanto à coleta, Paulo se dirigiu ao povo de Deus. Desde o Antigo Testamento a obra de Deus é mantida financeiramente por meio da liberalidade do seu povo. No capítulo 16 de primeiro Coríntios. O apóstolo Paulo, vai dar as instruções finais aos Coríntios. E como eles devem proceder uns para com os outros. Principalmente em relação à coleta e as ofertas como deve ser feitas, como deve ser organizada essa parte da Igreja. Que instruções, Paulo aborda nesse capítulo de primeiro Coríntios Capítulo 16! 1: Coleta (1 Coríntios 16:1-4). Quanto à coleta para os santos, façam também vocês como ordenei às igrejas da Galácia. V3. No primeiro dia da semana, cada um de vocês separe uma quantia, conforme a sua prosperidade, e vá juntando, para não ser necessário fazer coletas quando eu for.V3. E, quando eu tiver chegado, enviarei, com cartas, aqueles que vocês aprovarem, para levarem a oferta de vocês a Jerusalém. V4. Se for conveniente que eu também vá, eles irão comigo. O apóstolo Paulo quer que essa parte da igreja seja organizada, no primeiro dia da semana, perceba que era o dia em que a igreja se reunia, daí passou a igreja fazer parte da tradição no primeiro dia da semana, sendo o dia em que o Senhor Jesus ressuscitou. Além disso, Paulo é muito específico no que se refere ao valor, que seja de acordo com a prosperidade da pessoa. Quanto mais prosperamos por Deus, tanto mais devemos dar. Deus sempre tem uma grande porta aberta para você? 2: Visitas (1 Coríntios 16: 8-11). V8. Mas ficarei em Éfeso até o Pentecostes, v9. Porque uma porta grande e oportuna para o trabalho se abriu para mim; e há muitos adversários. No versículo oito, Paulo diz, mas permanecerei em Éfeso até o Pentecostes, para não ser preciso fazer coleta quando eu chegar. E no v9 Paulo diz, assim é na nossa vida, o Senhor Deus abre muitas portas grandes, abre muitas portas promissoras, mas que não deixam de ter muitos adversários. A atitude de Paulo é sensacional, a porta é grande, a porta é ampla e há muitos adversários, eu vou seguir porque o Senhor Jesus é comigo, e vai me dá a vitória. V10. E, se Timóteo for, façam tudo para não ter nada a temer enquanto estiver entre vocês, porque trabalha na obra do Senhor, como eu. Olha a preocupação de Paulo para com Timóteo, que era um jovem aprendiz, um filho na Fé, ele imitava o carácter e o estilo de vida de Paulo, e Paulo o amava sinceramente. Paulo sabia que a igreja de Corinto era uma igreja difícil, se eles resistiam ao próprio ensinamento do apóstolo Paulo, quanto mais a Timóteo. Paulo como um bom pai na Fé, ele quer garantir que Timóteo seja ouvido e respeitado quando estiver entre eles, então ele diz tome providência para que ele não tenha nada a temer quando estiver com vocês. V11. Portanto, que ninguém o despreze. Ajudem-no a continuar a viagem em paz, para que venha até aqui, visto que o espero com os irmãos. Isso amados nos ensina muito sobre honra, me ensina muito sobre lealdade, sobre cuidado, sobre generosidade, sobre ser um bom anfitrião, como saber receber os servos, as servas do Senhor encomendada por outros servos do Senhor. E ninguém o despreze, diz Paulo. Paulo queria que Timóteo fosse respeitado, bem recebido e bem tratado em Corinto, por mais que eles fossem de uma congregação difícil, uma igreja de coração duro. Muitas vezes questionadora e incrédula em tantos os aspectos, eles deveriam ter esse cuidado de receber Timóteo muito bem. Eu atribuí aos dias atuais que estamos vivendo, não importa as circunstâncias, somos servos e servas, e devemos vigiar se estamos vivendo tudo isso que Paulo está ensinando a igreja. Everything is Beautiful in its Time Ecclesiastes 3:1-14 July 17, 2022 I.Introduction: A. I had a very unusual experience with the passage we will look at today in Ecclesiastes 3. Please turn. For three days God kept drawing me back and opening new things to me. On the third day, he kept showing me more and more to the point where I said something I never said to God before. “God could you please stop, I really need to get some work done!” 1. I feel a deep sense of inadequacy with my finite mind to try to package into a sermon a passage that is loaded with infinite truths and some of the biggest questions that many of us ask ourselves along the way of life. 2. I may raise more questions than I answer but I trust I will be sending you down the right path to think about them. B. We are going to see three major things all intersect in this passage – God and His sovereignty, time and eternity, and man's activities here on earth. As Solomon wrestled with these three, he is going to ask a question that many of us have asked before. C. Let me do a quick side bar on God's sovereignty, as it is key in this passage and throughout the book! 1. Sovereignty –it simply means that God has the right and power to do whatever He pleases and He orders everything, controls everything, rules over everything according to His will in both heaven and here on earth! a. When you balance that out with Scripture we see two tensions to this truth 1. One God does not do or tempt anyone to evil – therefore God is not the cause or responsible for evil. 2. Romans 9-11 teaches us that while God is fully sovereign in His choices man is fully responsible for his choices. 2. When you ask me how do I fit together all the pieces of God's sovereignty and man's responsibility and accountability for his choices I respond like Paul did after three chapters of talking about this very thing. . Read Romans 11:33-36 a. This infinite truth should lead our finite minds and hearts to worship God rather than figure Him out and put Him in a box! • So, in light of these balancing truths, we are going to learn some key truths about God's sovereignty this morning. Let's jump right in the text … II. Ecclesiastes 3:1-9 A. The structure of this passage is simple 1. V1 he states the truth 2. V2-8 he illustrates the truth 3. V9 he asks the big question that comes out of this truth B. Read v1 1. By the way, in these few verses we are going to see the word “time” 30 times. Gives us a little hint about what this passage is about 2. Two different Hebrew words for time in v1 – the first has to do with a specific appointed time, the second has to do with time in general. 3. In the context of this chapter, we will see that God is the one who puts all these times on His master calendar in heaven. He has set up specific appointed times for everything here on earth long before they ever happen. 4. Verse 1 covers from the universal whole – everything in life to the specific parts – each individual event that happens on earth. C. V2-8 is reinforcing and illustrating the truth, we learned v1. 1. These fourteen sets of opposites are called a merism. A merism is a figure of speech that is used of polar opposites to suggest the totality of everything in between them. a. V2 simply that means he starts us off by showing us that God appoints everything from birth till death. Read 2a. b. The rest of the verses just flesh it out for us further. Read 2b-8 D. Now we come to the big question that Solomon asked and we often ask when we are faced with this truth, that God arranges the events of our life. 1. Read v9 2. We need to keep this question in the context of what came before it in V1-8. 3. So what he is asking is this “what value does anything I do have if God is sovereign, in control over everything?” 4. We should not take this as a cry of futility but an honest question in light of God's sovereignty. • The answer to this question is in III. Ecclesiastes 3:9-15 A. Read v10. 1. Now the answer I would have expected in light of the repeated phrase of the rest of this book is this “all man's works is vanity, like chasing after the wind.” 2. But he does not answer it that way – instead he says this - read v10-11 B. We see three major things in this verse. 1. God has made everything, yes, even all the things in V2-8 beautiful and appropriate in God's appointed time. Reread 11a 2. Secondly, God has set eternity within our heart (that is the deep-down yearning within us that wants to understand all the big questions of life), but the problem is that we cannot discover what God is doing 3. Note what he cannot discover what God is doing from the beginning even to the end. That is the big plan of God that expands beyond my life, my time and this world into eternity C. Let me try to illustrate this. We see and know only a very, very small, small piece of the tapestry that we experience and we only see the back side so things just do not make sense to us! Especially some of the hard and ugly things in our lives and this world! 1. But God's purposes expand beyond my life, my experience, my time, this world's history into eternity past and future. 2. Our little finite minds cannot understand our specific events in light of God's big plan 3. Try to illustrate this with the stage and to infinity on both sides. God's time and mind and our finite time and minds at one small point. a. To properly understand what God is doing we need to be able to understand what He is doing from eternity past and future D. Let me add one more thought about God's sovereign working in our lives and this world! 1. Read v14 2. Simply what he is saying that in light of this big sovereign plan of God, everything He does is permanent (everything God does will remain forever) and perfect (nothing to add to it and there is nothing to take from it) E. Now summarize the three everythings of Ecclesiastes 3 1. V1 - everything is according to God's appointed time 2. V11 everything is beautiful in that appointed time 3. V14 everything God does is permanent and perfect! 4. So that ……. fear Him . Sounds like the same conclusion that Paul came to in Romans 11 after three chapters of wrestling with these same truths! a. Do not try to figure out God or what He is doing just worship Him! – 1. A bit later in the series, I will show how fear and worship are connected! • There are a few IV. Take aways for us A. First, your activities/work/efforts here on earth are not futile but rather they are God instruments for accomplishing His eternal beautiful plan 1. Tie v1-8 to v10 – the task God has given … 2. Verse 12-13 see good in his work 3. Part of the good that man can see in his work is that God is using what he does to accomplish His big eternal and beautiful plan! B. When we allow the truths of Ecclesiastes 3 to become the northern point on the compass by which we navigate the activities and events of our lives, we regain our bearings and it gives a completely new perspective and attitude to our lives. 1. In many ways, this verse seems to me to be the Old Testament equivalent to the New Testament passage many of us claim repeatedly. Romans 8:28-29 C. Once in a while God gives us a small window into what He is doing. I was impressed with this truth on Mother's Day when Cathy Clarke was sharing with us about the loss of their son Kevin in the war 1. Hearing the amazing timing of the morning Kevin went out to his last battle before he went out he turning in an assignment where he recorded a very strong and clear testimony of his faith in Jesus Christ as his savior 2. Then for Phil and Cathy to receive word from one Kevin's superiors that the testimony was read to the company and eventually spread through the United States Marines websites. 3. We have no idea how many seeds were planted by that …how many lives have been touched – how many marriages, how many families, children. And how many of those who have been impacted by it have impacted others. 4. We can add to that how I have heard from some after that message how God used Cathy's message and sharing the process she went through in being radically honest with God has helped free them up from things they were struggling with. V. Prayerful reflection question for us . Think for a moment of one very difficult event in your life, one that caused you great pain or you just cannot understand why or what that was all about. 1. Consider when you tell others about that event or when you think about it; what does the way you tell it or think about it say about the way you interpret that event? a. Example: “the day God ripped me off?” “an unfair event” “betrayal by a friend” b. Take a moment to consider and title it from your perspective. 2. When you consider the title, you gave that event; on a scale of 1-10 how in line would your title be to the truths, we learned today in Ecclesiastes 3 and Romans 8:28. Give yourself a score 1-10 3. If you were to put a new title on that chapter of your life, even though the original title may be true, this one tells the larger story in light of the truths we learned today in Ecclesiastes 3 and Romans 8:28. . I want to encourage/challenge you that when you think or talk about that event in your life to begin to tell it from the perspective of the larger story title! a. Take a moment give that new title. V14-18The people of Lystra not only hear the gospel, but they witness its power, and they can clearly see how God saves sinners. The steps are simply laid out: We are sinners without strength from birth, the word of God is preached, authoritatively declared, centred on the cross, the Holy Spirit convicts the sinner of his sin, and imparts faith to receive the word, repent of sin and trust the Saviour. And He knows the way how to return there. In the Book of John, Jesus said, “… for I know where I came from and where I am going, but you don't know this about Me” (John 8:14). Jesus Christ is not a mere prophet. He's not a heavenly creature, like angel. He is GOD. He is THE SON of GOD. He is the CREATOR GOD. One of the Persons in the Godhead (the Elohim). THE IMMORTAL GOD. THE GOD OF THE UNIVERSE. He is the ALPHA and OMEGA. From the beginning of time, God the Father had bestowed upon the Son the power and authorities to create and rule the universe. He lived and came from a place of indescribable glory and majesty. 2) Jesus' Ascension Contains The Ultimate Promise v.9 “…He was taken up into a cloud while they were watching, and they could no longer see Him.” V11 “…but someday He will return from heaven in the same way you saw Him go!”. These statements are very important because it contains promise that the day will come that Jesus Christ will return in the same way. In John 14:1-2, Jesus said, “Don't let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God, trust also in Me… I am going there to prepare a place for you. And if I go … I will come back and take you to be with Me that you also may be where I am… “ As Christians, this is what supposed to give us the greatest excitement while we are still breathing and living here in this barren world. There will be the end of all the uncertainties, exhaustion, loneliness, troubles, conflicts, unfulfillment, suffering in our lives. Jesus Christ will come back to end the history of this broken world, and make all things new. We have a LIVING HOPE! AMEN!
