I discuss and review the latest Marvel film. Starring Anthony Mackie and Harrison Ford.2.5/5

Mostly Superheroes the podcast is back! Join hosts Logan Janis, Andy The Giggler, and Scotty Scoop as they feature fan reviews from our Screen & Social event where we saw Captain America: Brave New World. The guys also review the film and talk about the good, the bad, and the "what the hell were they thinking?" moments. Full podcast episode, movie trailer, and more: https://mostlysuperheroes.com/posts/captain-america-brave-new-world Quick take: The movie doesn't have the magic of Deadpool & Wolverine or The Winter Soldier and, for unexplained reasons, wraps up loose ends from 2008's The Incredible Hulk. Not to mention, but of course, we're going to mention it—the total waste of Gus Fring, aka Giancarlo Esposito. Anthony Mackie's Sam Wilson shines as bright Captain America in this packed film and Harrison Ford turns red as the new Thunderbolt Ross not quite filling the shoes of the late and great William Hurt. The crew gets into all of this and more. Thanks to all that attended our Screen & Social! And a special thanks to our sponsors: Alamo Drafthouse STL, 4 Hands Brewing Co., More to Say with Randi Naughton, The Voltron Store and Team Jakey End the Stigma. Finally, years after taking the reins from Steve Rogers, Anthony Mackie's Sam Wilson finally gets his turn on the big screen. Présentation : JulietteChroniqueur.euse.s : Pauline, Arthur & Julien
"Everybody dies. Some of us peacefully and in our sleep, and some of us... horribly. And that's life."
A terrific BEHIND THE LENS for you this week to finish off Black History Month as you're about to hear my exclusive interview with director JULIUS ONAH talking about CAPTAIN AMERICA: BRAVE NEW WORLD, as well as my interview with actor turned writer/producer/and lo budget no budget micro-budget filmmaker ELLA THOMAS talking KNOW MERCY. First up is ELLA THOMAS with KNOW MERCY, a film that is rooted in faith while exploring good versus evil, immortality versus mortality, and what it means to be human. Many of you are already familiar with Ella, notably for her most recent role in "Nightbitch". What I love about this conversation with Ella is not only how we break down the film from her perspective as a writer and producer, but we delve into casting and performance – including her own – and the emotional depth of the characters, along with emphasizing the importance of grounded motivation and real interpersonal dynamics. Reflecting on her collaboration with Perdell Richardson with this project, Ella also speaks to the challenges of guerrilla filmmaking, the necessary flexibility required due to funding constraints, and the support from the film's distributor, Gravitas Ventures. Then, I bring out the big guns and my exclusive interview with director JULIUS ONAH discussing CAPTAIN AMERICA: BRAVE NEW WORLD which has taken the world by storm as Sam Wilson, the new Captain America, finds himself in the middle of an international incident and must discover the motive behind a nefarious global plan. What I particularly appreciate with BRAVE NEW WORLD is that Julius gives us thoughtful dramatic moments that allow us to get to know Sam as his own person and not part of an entire group of personalities (aka Avengers) but see him wrestle with his own conscience and self-worth, trying to step out of Steve Rogers shadow and make Captain America his own. I love that Julius stayed true to himself as a filmmaker with the dramatic personal aspects of the story and then cocooned that with some explosive razzle dazzle action. http://eliasentertainmentnetwork.com
The Marvel Cinematic Universe gets a fresh jolt of paranoia and political intrigue with "Captain America: Brave New World," a thriller that sees Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie) trying to define his place as the new Cap while dealing with international chaos, rogue superhumans, and some very questionable allies. Directed by Julius Onah, the film doesn't just bring back some familiar faces—it makes them part of a tangled political mess of past sins and present-day power plays. Tim Blake Nelson's Leader resurfaces with a grudge, Carl Lumbly's Isaiah Bradley adds emotional weight, and oh yeah, Harrison Ford steps into the formidable shoes of Thaddeus "Thunderbolt" Ross, who may or may not be hiding a very big, very angry, very red secret. READ MORE: ‘Captain America: Brave New World' Review: Sam Wilson's Heart, Grit & Determination Trump Superpowers In Marvel's New Conspiracy ThrillerDirector Julius Onah joins The Discourse to talk about all of the spoilery details on Marvel's latest, including what he thinks won him the role of director. In his pitch, Onah sought to explore a more grounded and cerebral take on what it means to be Cap in a world that isn't sure it needs one. "It was about a point of view more so than anything," Onah explained about pitching the film to Marvel. "They were familiar with my last film, a small indie film called 'Luce,' and I first had just a general conversation with Nate Moore and Kiana Davidson at Marvel. We talked again, more generally, about theme tone and character. And, for me, it was sort of a gut check moment of like, you're going to go down the road with people. Are these people that you would even just love to have a conversation with about movies?"

The 35th movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe is now in theaters. Is it the worst one yet? Plus, our early Rotten Tomatoes predictions for MICKEY 17.
Captain America: Brave New World marks the beginning of the second half of The Multiverse Saga. This installment weaves long-dangling threads from 2008's Incredible Hulk, events from Captain America: Civil War, and a world-shifting revelation from Eternals into an action-forward political thriller. In keeping with early Captain America storylines, Brave New World blends its “state of the sociopolitical landscape” level-set into a plot driven by high-stakes mission and a changing of the political guard. If you're coming into Captain America: Brave New World off of a (re)watch of The Falcon and the Winter Solider series, temper those expectations. In director Julius Onah's (Luce) film, Wilson may no longer be conflicted about assuming the mantle of Captain America; but he is wrestling with his role in the US military industrial complex, the pressure to be an unassailable Black hero, and taking repeated hits to his sense of self in an anti-Black system. It's a subtle (often too subtle), but intentional, schism at play throughout the entire movie. But it pays to remember, Sam Wilson's tenure as Captain America has just begun. This is not the moment he shakes off the fetters of respectability. Just like in the comics, Wilson's path forward is a more measured and pragmatic approach to combating inequity and defending against evil; seeming to operate within the realm of current reality rather than aggressively rejecting and dismantling oppressive ideologies and their attendant institutions. As a veteran and counselor (who specialized in helping other veterans suffering from PTSD) he openly advocated for the necessity of harm mitigation while carving out sustainable solutions. He still believes that despite the obstacles and judgment that we (society) can do better. Think John Lewis, not Stokely Carmichael. And that fact alone will be reason enough for some viewers to bounce off Brave New World. Captain America: Brave New World opens in theaters February 14, 2025 ♦♦ Director: Julius Onah Writers: Rob Edwards, Malcolm Spellman, Dalan Musson, Julius Onah, Peter Glanz Starring: Anthony Mackie, Danny Ramirez, Shira Haas, Carl Lumbly, Xosha Roquemore, Giancarlo Esposito, Liv Tyler, Tim Blake Nelson, Harrison Ford Runtime: 118 Minutes Synopsis: Sam Wilson, the new Captain America, finds himself in the middle of an international incident and must discover the motive behind a nefarious global plan. Join Ian and James as we step into a post-Endgame world to see if Brave New World soars as a worthy successor to the Captain America legacy or if it stumbles under the weight of expectation. Does it honour Steve Rogers' past while firmly establishing Sam Wilson as his own Cap, or does it play it too safe without enough bold ambition? We'll examine the film's storytelling—Does it justify its place in the MCU after so much time since Falcon and the Winter Soldier? How does Anthony Mackie fare in his first solo Captain America outing, and does he bring the same leadership and presence as Chris Evans once did? The first MCU movie of the year - Captain America: Brave New World - is now out in theaters. Honestly, I've been shockingly not excited for this movie. As much as I love Sam Wilson and I did enjoy Falcon and Winter Soldier more than most people, the behind the scenes drama on this movie and the creative team announced just kept killing my excitement as we got closer to release. I've liked the tone of the trailers but all we heard from behind the curtains weren't spelling good news for this movie at all. Of course though, I went in really wanting this movie to be good; the only reason this podcast even came to be in the first place is because of my love for the MCU and Steve Rogers has always been my favorite character in the franchise. The movie has now released worldwide. Does Captain America: Brave New World continue a winning streak for Marvel after Deadpool & Wolverine... or are we going to have to wait for Thunderbolts and Fantastic Four (two MCU movies I AM excited about) to get the good stuff?
