Episode 65 | "Nothing but embracement, that's all I want at the end of the day." This week Brooke starts off heavy with a dream about demons in bed. The mood lightens up with catnaps and dreams about fun new game shows, giraffes, bathroom emergencies, and hot new breakfast spots. PR works with media on reviews to build trust for the brands we represent. On the show today, is Scott Tharler, an award-winning tech journalist who has reviewed bazillions of tech products and services for Newsweek, Club Life Magazine, Gear Patrol, Maxim, Techwalla, Fodor's Travel, Discovery News and many others. Also an author, podcaster (The Family CTO) and speaker, he's especially drawn to devices dedicated to travel, audio and power, but considers himself a tech generalist, excited to share info about cool, practical gadgets (and non-tech stuff) with anyone who'll listen. We dig into the paid aspects of journalism today and of course how marketers continue to get it wrong invading privacy and lacking empathy.

In this week's episode, the third member of the Commissioner Index research team, Lizzie, joins Alice and Heather to unpack the latest commissioning news. Lizzie delivers the inside scoop on the Discovery Network's Magnolia channel, described by Discovery as "a warm cup of milk," which is now arriving in streaming form before it launches as a linear channel. Heather discusses YouTube's move towards diverse, unscripted original content, and why UK producers should be looking to YouTube for exciting opportunities. Alice brings Disney+ updates, including a move away from their reliance on existing IP for their new European slate. Alice also explains how the streamer's series Wandavision has been her gateway into the world of Marvel. All that, plus our 'Greenlight of the Week' segment is back.

Bartholomew); “Media Mythmakers: How Journalists, Activists, and Advertisers Mislead Us,” examining the ways in which deception is used in various media to influence decision making and public policy; “Lake Monster Mysteries: Investigating the World’s Most Elusive Creatures” (with Joe Nickell), a scientific examination of lake monsters around the world; “Scientific Paranormal Investigation: How to Solve Unexplained Mysteries” (which is pretty self-explanatory); “Tracking the Chupacabra: The Vampire Beast in Fact, Fiction, and Folklore”; “The Martians Have Landed! We start by poking fun at the intro music for Enterprise, which is a must since this was Zach's first episode of ENT. We also discussed why perhaps a Mirror Universe episode was a bad introduction to the show... Zach theorizes on character archetypes across different Star Trek shows. This week we're talking infrastructure! The show will specifically focus on the Sept. 2 announcement of the $360-million Yukon Resource Gateway Project. The joint federal and territorial initiative is designed to "improve road access in two mineral-rich areas: the Dawson Range in central Yukon and the Nahanni Range Road in southeastern Yukon." The project will reportedly upgrade "over 650 km" of road and build or replace numerous bridges, culverts, and stream crossings. We're joined by Yukon Mining Alliance chair, and president and CEO of Western Copper and Gold (TSX: WRN; NYSE-MKT: WRN), Paul West-Sells to discuss the funding process and what the project could mean for mineral exploration and development in the territory. We talk Goldcorp's (TSX: G; NYSE: GG) Coffee project and the impact of major mining investment. Meanwhile, Matt digs into a few eye-catching headlines that came across the newswire recently, including new drill intercepts from GT Gold's (TSXV: GTT; US-OTC: GTGDF) emerging Saddle South discovery in B.C. and Kirkland Lake Gold's (TSX: KL; NYSE: KL) strategic investment in Australia-focused explorer Novo Resources (TSXV: NVO; USOTC: NSRPF). 5:05 Base metal update (zinc, nickel, copper) 5:45 Gold and USD update 6:46 Headlines around the mining world ft. Yesterday, Bryan Fuller the show runner for Star Trek Discovery released a lot of story and character information at the TCA press tour in Beverly Hills. Good timing, because I had already scheduled a new talk with Filmmaker Podcaster and hardcore Trek-spert Robert Meyer Burnett . Rob made the wonderful 1999 indie film Free Enterprise with Eric McCormack & William Shatner, edited the Star Trek Prelude To Axanar Fan Film and was to direct the crowd funded feature film Axanar, until CBS and Paramount sued the Axanar producers cause a cease and desist shutdown to the film.Rob has thoughts on the new Trek CBS ALL ACCESS show, the Axanar lawsuit, the film Star Trek Beyond and a lot more. We also talk about Suicide Squad, DC Films vs Marvel Films, some new film projects Rob is working on and putting together the special features for The Star Trek Next Generation Blu ray Box set.

There are few enduring truths, but one is that no one gets out of life alive. What's less certain is what comes next. Does everything stop with death, or are we transported to another plane of existence? First-hand accounts of people who claim to have visited heaven are offered as proof of an afterlife. Now the author of one bestseller admits that his story was fabricated. We'll look at the genre of “heaven tourism” to see if it has anything to say about the possible existence of the hereafter, and why the idea of an afterlife seriously influences how we live our lives on Earth. Also, a neurologist describes what is going on in the brain during near-death and other out-of-body experiences. It's Skeptic Check, our monthly look at critical thinking … but don't take our word for it! Guests: • Ben Radford – Paranormal investigator, research fellow at the Committee for Skeptical Inquiry and deputy editor of the Skeptical Inquirer, and author of the Discovery News article, “Why People Believed Boy's ‘Visit to Heaven' Story” • Greg Garrett – Professor of English at Baylor University, writer on books, culture and religion for the Huffington Post, and author of Entertaining Judgment: The Afterlife in Popular Imagination • Steven Novella – Professor of neurology at Yale University School of Medicine and host of the “Skeptic's Guide to the Universe” podcast Originally Aired May 24, 2015 Learn more about your ad choices. Mysterious, pyramid-like structures spotted in the Egyptian desert by an amateur satellite archaeologist Angela Micol might be long-lost pyramids after all, according to a new investigation into the enigmatic mounds.Angela Micol, who last year found the structures using Google Earth 5,000 miles away in North Carolina, says puzzling features have been uncovered during a preliminary ground proofing expedition, revealing cavities and shafts.First reported by Discovery News, her claim gained widespread media attention and much criticism. Authoritative geologists and geo-archaeologists were largely skeptical and dismissed what Micol called "Google Earth anomalies" as windswept natural rock formations -- buttes quite common in the Egyptian desert.Micol launched Google Earth Anomalies in the early 2000's and Google Earth Anomalies, an active Facebook page.In this program we'll discover the importance of satellite imagery in discovering Earth forgotten past, and how each of us can view parts of Earth that provide new understanding for how our ancestors lived.
I want to thank everyone for their expressions of sympathy after the passing of my uncle. It really helped hearing from all of you during such a difficult time. I'm a bit bitchier than usual in this news episode, so consider yourselves warned. Some of the stories I cover include things like gun nuts, terrorism, IFLS getting a case of the stoopids, along with Discovery News having a similar case of the stoopids, Russia banning transgendered people from driving, and much, much, more. I've also submitted the Bootstrapping the Planet podcast to iTunes, so for those of you who liked that segment, it should be available on iTunes in a few days. Show notes will be posted tomorrow. I'd do it tonight, but it took me about 3 hours to edit this episode and I'm tired, so I'm going to bed.

Today is Earth Day 2007. According to the Earth Day Network Web site, the focus of this year's Earth Day is “A Call for Action on Climate Change”. Climate change is a topic that is in the news a lot lately, but one rarely finds a connection between climate change and dolphins. However, there is one species of cetacean that is on the front lines of this battle against climate change: the narwhal. You might remember from a previous episode of The Dolphin Pod that we discussed a hypothesis that the narwhal's tusk may function as a kind of barometer – sensitive to changes in the atmosphere. But, this time it's not the narwhal's tusk that is helping researchers learn more about climate change, it's the narwhals themselves. Scientists are using narwhals tagged with satellite transmitters and instruments that sample water temperatures to learn more about remote regions of the Atlantic Ocean.
