Send us a textJon tours the quickly dwindling food stores of the Night's Watch and then is summoned by King Stannis. The king offers Jon a surprising gift, then adds to the shock by revealing his risky plan to win the north. Jon redirects him to a new plan that is safer and has huge upsides. Mackelly and Simon fear that Stannis is not earning their loyalty.Chapter Review:Jon Snow joins Bowen Marsh to inspect winter food stores held beneath Castle Black. Despite past generosity from lords and a long summer, feeding Stannis' army and wildlings has depleted supplies. Marsh proposes winter rations early. Jon agrees, knowing it'll cause unrest.Jon later meets Stannis, Melisandre, and others in the king's solar. Stannis gifts Jon a controlled Rattleshirt as a soldier. Discussion turns to Mors Umber's terms for support. Stannis hesitates, but Jon urges acceptance, warning that rejecting Mors' terms would turn the North against him. Stannis reveals plans to take the Dreadfort, but Jon argues the Boltons will return too soon and crush Stannis' force. Pressed to arm wildlings, Jon reluctantly offers basic gear, wary of violating the Night's Watch vows. Privately, Stannis tempts Jon again with legitimization and Winterfell. Jon refuses but proposes recruiting Northern mountain clans instead. If successful, Stannis could retake Deepwood Motte and build support. A thousand years ago, Karlon Stark put down a rebel lord and was rewarded with lands and a castle he named Karhold. The Karhold Starks became House Karstark, greatly benefiting Winterfell and the reverse to the Dreadfort. Over the centuries, the Starks and Karstarks would intermarry several times, renewing their ancient ties through marriage alliance. But the events of ASOIAF have seen great change, as Rickard Karstark went from staunch ally of King Robb Stark to the execution block. There's now a rush to claim Karhold - his daughter Alys married Sigorn, son of the man who led the attack on Castle Black and they've got 200 Thenns backing them, but the lawful heir Harrion Karstark is still alive in the south and Arnolf Karstark has conspired with the Boltons to betray Stannis to claim the castle for his son Cregan. The Ghosts of Harrenhal: A Song of Ice and Fire Podcast (ASOIAF)
Jaime heads south while Brienne stays a captive of Vargo Hoat. After a night's sleep and a dream, his conscience pricked, he heads back to Harrenhal and saves Brienne from a terrible fate. Simon and Mackelly open their minds a tiny crack toward his redemption?!Chapter Review:Jaime Lannister leaves Harrenhal alongside Lord Roose Bolton. The pair split up and head in opposite directions, both sending regards to Robb Stark and Tywin Lannister, respectively. They admonish him for killing King Aerys and allowing Rhaegar's wife and children to be killed. Jaime and Brienne share a bath. Jaime also shares a story that comes as a shock to Brienne. Later, they both dine with Lord Roose Bolton. The pair learn why Vargo Hoat cut off Jaime's hand, as well as what Roose plans to do with them both. It's good news for Jaime, not so much for Brienne. Simon and Mackelly ask Jaime to please pass the prunes.Chapter Review:Jaime Lannister slides himself into the tub currently occupied by Brienne of Tarth, much to Brienne's dismay. After a squabble between the two, Jaime tells the full story of how he came to be known as the “Kingslayer.” He reveals never-before known details that paint him in a much more heroic light. Brienne is speechless. After bath time, Brienne helps Jaime dress and then escorts him to dinner with Lord Roose Bolton. Jaime wants to know what Roose plans to do with Brienne and him. Roose explains that he has many options to consider regarding Jaime's fate. Brienne says he must let them finish their prisoner exchange in King's Landing. Roose says he's been told it was a prison break, and if so Brienne is guilty of treason. All that said, he does plan on sending Jaime on to King's Landing. First, he needs Jaime to promise to clear his name with Lord Tywin.Roose explains Vargo Hoat cut off Jaime's hand to dissuade Roose from sending Jaime back to his family, since Vargo is Roose's man, as Roose is King Robb's man. Therefore, Roose should take some blame for the act. Jaime promises to make it clear Roose saved Jaime and Vargo acted alone. Brienne assumes she'll be accompanying Jaime on his way. However, Roose sets her straight. She'll stay in Harrenhal, as Vargo's prize possession. He suggests she turn her attention to sapphires.Characters/Places/Names/Events:Jaime Lannister - Member of the royal Kingsguard. Twin brother to queen Cersei and older brother to Tyrion. Part 2 of our Best of the Worst series finds us still in the frozen north, strapped to wooden planks. As we scream for mercy, the lord of the Dreadfort, Roose Bolton stares at us with cold, calculating eyes. He tortures us with soft words and evil intent, we beg for him to flay us just to end the ordeal. While Ramsey was one of the most hated on the show, his Obi Wan was none other than Roose. Everything Ramsey was, was cultivated and watered by the psychopathic tendencies of his father. But, even with their many flaws, they were tortured men themselves, in search of legitimacy. Roose points out that King Robb has won every battle he's entered into against the Lannisters. The Freys remind him that Tywin Lannister's army has expanded greatly since their alliance with House Tyrell. She then receives the devastating news that Winterfell has been taken and Bran and Rickon killed. When the Freys leave, Roose dictates a letter to Helman Tallhart, who has taken Castle Darry. We're past the halfway point of Season 4, which means we're into gangbuster territory. I'd make the argument here that the back half of Season 4 might be the best and most important stretch of this entire show, and we're kicking it off with "The Laws of Gods & Men," or as its better known as, Tyrion's trial. It's another season 4 episode written by Bryan Cogman, as well as another one that features a gigantic King's Landing event for the whole second half, in this case Tyrion's trial, the next even in the awesome King's Landing arc this season. We get a few brief check-ins with Stannis visiting the Iron Bank and Daenerys realizing that ruling Meereen is going to be much harder than she originally thought. We also get possibly the worst sequence in this season with Yara attempting to lead an attack on the Dreadfort to rescue Theon, and not only does he not recognize her, but somehow Ramsay fights off multiple Ironborn with no shirt on? And then, the entire sequence is used to give Ramsay the ammunition he needs to use Theon to...look, it's a really dumb sequence, it doesn't work, and it's better in hindsight not to talk about it. Instead, we have the star of the episode, and arguably his last great performance and monologue on the show, because Peter Dinklage really brings it this episode, channeling all the hurt, the betrayal and the misery his family's put him through the last couple seasons into the monologue to end all monologues as he calls for trial by combat after Shae's devastating betrayal. Pat & I are covering every episode of this show all the way up until the finale, and it's all covered here on #talkinthrones --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/talkintvpodcastgmailcom/support

In this week's chapters, Arya and the Hound are in a sitcom and lots of sketchy s**t is happening at the Twins. Roose Bolton is sus but no one knows it except us. WE see through his lies. Jess attempts an on-the-spot summary, no one wants the Hound's salted pork, and Arya is a drowned rat. Arya is so close to her family but the foreboding is REAL.Character perspectives in this episode: Catelyn and Arya...Thanks so much for listening! Bran, as the Stark in Winterfell, must welcome and entertain a succession of Northern nobility as they come to petition for favors and to vie for the hand of the recently widowed Donella Hornwood (who happens to be the Lady of a large tract of valuable land). He's not thrilled, but Simon and Mackelly are.Chapter Review:Bran Stark and Hodor watch the young nobles, squires, and pages practicing in the yard. Lady Hornwood is troubled by what Roose Bolton's bastard and presumed heir is up to in the Dreadfort. The Ghosts of Harrenhal: A Song of Ice and Fire Podcast (ASOIAF)
News of Jamie's capture reaches Tywin. The siege of Riverrun is lifted and Edmure Tully freed. Renly Baratheon has married Margery Tyrell and claimed the throne. Suddenly the Lannister procession is in danger of becoming a rout. Tywin orders Tyrion to King's Landing to bring the new king to heel. The boys are right there with him. Chapter Review: Tywin's bannermen are gathered at the Inn at the Crossroads, again. A messenger from Jamie's army has arrived with only bad news: Jamie is captured. The siege of Riverrun ended. The sell-swords have flipped allegiance. Edmure Tully has been rescued. Maybe 2000 men survived to flee back to the Golden Tooth, but the rest are lost. The bannermen, who aren't a particularly impressive group, are dismayed. They agree that everything should be done to ransom Jamie, but Tyrion points out that Joffrey's decision to behead Ned has shattered any possibility of that happening. Eventually, Tywin turfs them all out apart from Tyrion and Kevan. He announces that they'll retreat south to Harrenhal which his host is large enough to defend. With enemies on all sides, there's not much more he can do. In the meantime, his brutes will continue to burn and pillage the Riverlands. Lastly, Tyrion will be dispatched to King's Landing to rule. He's charged with bringing the new King into line, and Cersei too, and to figure out if anyone on the Small Council is worth their salt. Characters/Places/Names/Events: Tyrion Lannister - Youngest son of Tywin Lannister. Brother to queen Cersei and Jamie Lannister. Tywin Lannister - Lord of Casterly Rock. Father of Jamie, Cersei, and Tyrion Lannister. Kevan Lannister - Younger brother of Tywin Lannister. Uncle to Tyrion. Jamie Lannister - Eldest son of Tywin Lannister. Member of the King's Guard. The Ghosts of Harrenhal: A Song of Ice and Fire Podcast (ASOIAF)
Tyrion is invited to join the vanguard of the forthcoming battle with the northern army. He meets a young lady who might just be his match, and he somehow contrives to survive the battle. The day belongs to the Lannisters, but key elements of the northern host are absent. The boys weigh up the strategic advantage and moon over the charming Shae. Chapter Review: Tyrion and crew have traveled a couple of hundred miles up the Kingsroad to face Robb Stark's army. The two forces are set to meet the next day. Tyrion tries dining with his father, but Tywin's willingness to see his youngest son go into battle in the vanguard without so much as command robs him of his appetite. He gets back to his own tent to discover he's missed dinner there too. Bronn has acquired the services of a prostitute for Tyrion's last evening on earth. Shae is a sassy young thing, and Tyrion is instantly charmed. He promises her gold, but demands exclusivity. Their night together ends abruptly when the alarm sounds that the northern army has marched through the night. Tyrion's new squire, Podrick Payne, is asleep on the job and Tyrion almost misses the action. Tyrion and his mountain clans acquit themselves well and the Lannister forces are victorious. However, although the victory has delivered multiple high-value assets to Tywin and company, it turns out that a trick has been pulled and Robb Stark has crossed the Green Fork at the Twins and is presumably headed to Riverrun to harry Jaime. Characters/Places/Names/Events: Tyrion Lannister - Youngest son of Tywin Lannister. Brother to queen Cersei and Jamie Lannister. Tywin Lannister - Lord of Casterly Rock. The Ghosts of Harrenhal: A Song of Ice and Fire Podcast (ASOIAF)
Bran watches the Karstarks arrive at Winterfell. He talks to Osha, who warns him of the Others and assures him that the danger to their safety is not from King's Landing, but from north of the Wall. Nevertheless, the Stark banners head south to defend the Riverlands and hopefully rescue Ned. The boys try to see things through Bran's eyes (all three of them). Chapter Review: Bran watches as the Karstarks swell the numbers at Winterfell to 12,000 soldiers. Robb's headed south to protect the Riverlands, find his mom, and hopefully rescue his father and sisters from the clutches of Queen Cersei. This despite receiving word from Sansa that Robb and their mother should could to King's Landing and bend the knee. In the Godswood with Hodor's, Bran encounters Osha the wildling. She assures Bran that Robb and his army should be heading north. Whatever his concern is with the south, it's nothing compared to what's coming from the north. Bran promises to convince Robb. But he doesn't get the chance. Robb is busy convincing the hard northern Lords to follow a green boy of summer, with some help from Grey Wind. Bran confides in Maester Luwin, but the old man assures Bran that Osha's stories are fanciful. A couple of days later the armies head south, leaving Bran in charge of Winterfell. Tyrion’s trial has come. Yara and her troops storm the Dreadfort to free Theon. Daenerys meets Hizdar zo Loraq. Stannis makes a deal with the Iron Bank of Braavos.
Today we talk about the Lord of the Dreadfort himself and how to best manipulate Panic Tests with him. THE LIST: Commander: Roose Bolton, Lord of the Dreadfort Lannister Guardsmen (5) + Ramsay Snow (3) [8pts] Lannister Guardsmen (5) Dreadfort Captain (1) [6pts] Lannister Guardsmen (5) [5pts] House Bolton Cutthroats (5) + Tyrion (3) [8pts] House Bolton Cutthroats (5) + Assault Veteran [6pts] Cersai Lannister [4pts] Pycelle [3pts] 40/40 Also attached is a PDF of the cards so you can follow along: https://www.dropbox.com/s/te43bk4i2u5rw60/Roose%20List%20-%2040pts.pdf?dl=0 ADDENDUM: I actually completely forgot that we showcased the Pyromancers last week, so I can talk about them now. I would absolutely get one unit of them into the list, because of the additional work they do, as well as the fact they cover one of the weaknesses in being able to remove heavy defense. To incorporate them I'd remove Tyrion and the naked unit of Lannister Guardsmen with Pyromancers, and then use the single spare point to change Pycelle to Littlefinger. Alternatively, you could forgo upgrading Littlefinger, remove the Assault Vet from the Cutthroats, and then add Bronn to the Pyromancers, giving them additional threat and you as well because now the Wealth zone is also powerful for you.
Hereinspaziert, hereinspaziert! Courtroom drama comes to Westeros, as Daenerys issues decrees in Meereen and Tyrion’s regicide trial begins. There are some brief detours to Braavos for Bank Loan Drama and the Dreadfort for Failed Rescue Drama, but it’s Tyrion’s trial that dominates the episode. Monty Ashley and Brian Hamilton render their judgements. Maybe it should be “The Laws of Gods and Men and Monty and Brian.” (No, it probably shouldn’t) Host Monty Ashley with Brian Hamilton.
In this podcast, reflecting our Instant Take for Game of Thrones episode 406, “Laws of Gods and Men”, Jim and I were blown away by the mighty CGI dragons and the quiet rage of Tyrion Lannister. And that’s to say nothing of the goings on at the Dreadfort, which has managed to make us interested in the Boltons, the Ironborn, and Reek once again. Robb is back in Riverrun and Catlyn finally gets to see him again! Unfortunately, they've both made mistakes. Catelyn has let Jamie Lannister go, and Robb's brought back a brand new wife...when he's supposed to marry Walda Frey (or some Frey or another). Pretty spicy stuff! This highly animated episode also features some very tortured metaphors as we try to suss out what Roose Bolton and the Bastard of the Dreadfort have planned.
It's the greatest showdown in history. The Bastard of the Dreadfort shows up to show Theon, the Garbage of the Greyjoys, how being an awful human being is really done. Never has the tearing of down of the irritating Ironborn been so bittersweet, as when two awful elephants fight, it is the innocents of Winterfell who suffer.
It's back to Winterfell, to check up on Bran, and to learn more about Jojen's "green dreams". One of his prophecies has come true, so we do our best to decipher the message in the two new ones he presents. It's actually pretty intruiging! There's also followup on the Bastard of the Dreadfort, apparently there's a reason he's not called the Nice Guy of the Dreadfort, and we find that out in a pretty foul way.
Kelly's back with Ivan and Red to cover 568-617 (Bran, Daenerys, Catelyn, and Tyrion). We cover some Karstarks, wine tasting in Dothrak, russian arms dealer Robb, Bran's bowls turning to water, and Tywin chatting up some hill people. Listen until the end to find out about Kelly's new project. Next week we cover 618-664 (Sansa, Eddard, Catelyn, Jon).
