As Kai Ryssdal puts it, the United States is like House Lannister from “Game of Thrones”: It always pays its debt. But if Congress isn’t able to increase the debt limit, the government won’t have enough money to pay all its bills later this year. A listener called in to ask how that would affect regular Americans. We’ll get into it and answer more of your questions about the economic consequences of exclusionary zoning, how tariffs work and how households of different income levels are affected by rising inflation. And she escapes Harrenhal for Riverrun with Gendry and Hot Pie. Simon and Mackelly saddle up for the ride.Chapter Review:Arya Stark blends into the background of Lord Roose Bolton's chambers, while a large group of Frey men suggest that King Robb has lost the war and must kneel to the Lannister. Roose points out that King Robb has won every battle he's entered into against the Lannisters. The Freys remind him that Tywin Lannister's army has expanded greatly since their alliance with House Tyrell. She then receives the devastating news that Winterfell has been taken and Bran and Rickon killed. When the Freys leave, Roose dictates a letter to Helman Tallhart, who has taken Castle Darry. During her chores, she finds a map showing Riverrun's location compared to Harrenhal. It's not too far away. After a trip to the godswood, Arya returns to serve Roose his dinner and wine. He tells her that she will stay in Harrenhal when he leaves and serve Vargo Hoat. Arya then makes her way back to the godswood. However, on her way she comes across Elmar Frey. Sansa sits with Cersei as the queen gets both news of the battle and becomes increasingly drunk. Sansa's heart almost stops when Cersei says she knows of Sansa's treasons in the godswood. Finally, Cersei reveals that Ser Ilyn Payne is there to remove their heads, if Stannis should take the castle. Simon and Mackelly scan the room for exits.Chapter Review:Sansa Stark sits next to Queen Cersei in the Queen's Ballroom of Maegor's Holdfast, along with the other highborn ladies. Osney and Osfryd Kettleblack bring updates regarding the battle. Both the King's Gate and the Mud Gate are under attack. That's too close for the queen's comfort, as King Joffrey is at the giant trebuchets inside the Mud Gate. She commands that he be brought back inside Maegor's Holdfast. The two ladies pass the time by Cersei explaining what being a woman is really like to Sansa. Tears and feminine wiles are a woman's weapons, she explains. She wishes she'd been trained to wield a sword, like her twin brother Jamie, so she wouldn't have to sit here so helplessly. But, despite being the Queen Regent of the Seven Kingdoms, she has little power to do anything aside from sit here with the other frightened hens, who she has little respect for.Sansa inquires about the plan, should the castle fall. Cersei says she will give herself over to Stannis, if Maegor's Holdfast holds until he arrives. If it doesn't, they'll be in for a rough night. However, later she reveals that she's kept Ser Ilyn Payne around in the event the castle falls. If that happens, Ser Ilyn will take their heads, yes Sansa's too. Cersei will not have House Stark benefit from the fall of House Lannister.Characters/Places/Names/Events:Sansa Stark - Eldest daughter of Lord Eddard Stark and Catelyn Tully. Betrothed to Joffrey Baratheon. Captive of the Lannisters.Queen Cersei Lannister - Widow of King Robert Baratheon, twin sister of Ser Jamie Lannister. The Lannister's are a power hungry and ruthlessly ruling family in Westeros. They've used clever politics and resourcefulness to gain immense power and wealth, as well as control over King's Landing and the Iron Throne. It's also a family whose fate is not so dissimilar to the Starks, because when you play the Game of thrones, chances are it will be the end of you...

Joey & Jenn team up with Luke Johnson of House Lannister to discuss the best Game of Thrones characters and why it's not Sansa.
Kate Winslet stars in Mildred Pierce (2011), a five part adaptation of the James M. Cain novel. Mildred finds herself a grass widow after tossing her dirty bastard of a husband from their hovel due to his affair with a distinctly middle class frump. Now, staring down the barrel of a Depression-era breadline, she's forced to endure the indignities of (shock) waitressing and (double shock) wearing a uniform. Special attention must be paid to Mildred's daughter, Veda, another contender for our list of worst HBO characters. (21:57 - 1:23:33) ... A manipulative, disloyal, self-obsessed parasite like Veda Pierce would fit right in with the cast of Game of Thrones (2011), a sprawling fantasy epic about feuding Houses and the supernatural forces that threaten to unite or destroy them. King Robert Baratheon is headed north to Winterfell following the death of his Hand, and he's brought along with him the entire royal posse, including the Imp and the Incest Twins. When Ma and Pa Stark get a raven in the night alerting them to a murderous scheme hatched by House Lannister things get dot dot dot complicated. (1:23:34 - 3:03:56) ... Also, The Plot Against America, The Outsider, Gorilla and the Bird, Perry Mason, The Many Saints of Newark, and Mare of Easttown. (0 - 21:56) Thanks to our guest host Steve, and warning: we discuss all of Mildred Pierce and some of season one of Thrones. No major character deaths spoiled, but we do reveal a few early plot points. | Send feedback to hooplecast@gmail.com. This week Kalvin and Nick discuss one of the most fascinating characters in modern literature, but also one of the most misrepresented in modern television. A man of more titles than even Jon Snow: Captain of the Kingsguard or is it Queensguard now? The Kingslayer of House Lannister and by the gods we hope Kinslayer, Jaime Lannister. The character from the novels is picked apart; how he came to be, who he is, what he's about, his future and more. But don't worry, we even discuss the show as part of an episode so epic it couldn't be fit into one. Game of Thrones show-only discussion begins at 52:33 of Part 2. Enjoy and let us know what you think on Twitter @APASomething or leave us a rating and review on iTunes. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/apasomething/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/apasomething/support

In this episode, we take a short break while prepping for our Brett bet episode on the Stormlight Archive books. Here we discuss the history of Westeros and other Game of Thrones lore, culture, and geography. Enjoy Episode 27. We hit some major topics including the origin of House Lannister, and so much more. Literature discussion done right! We, the Shoutouts, from Lyket Entertainment, have gotten together to discuss Game of Thrones related topics with our favorite wine, beer, ale, and rum.
This episode goes over the early houses in the Westerlands, many of which ruled as kings during the Age of Heroes, which leads to the conquest of House Lannister of the Rock, who will eventually reduce all of these kings to loyal vassals.
Of the five contenders for power, one is dead, another in disfavor, and still the wars rage as violently as ever, as alliances are made and broken. Joffrey, of House Lannister, sits on the Iron Throne, the uneasy ruler of the land of the Seven Kingdoms. His most bitter rival, Lord Stannis, stands defeated and disgraced, the victim of the jealous sorceress who holds him in her evil thrall. But young Robb, of House Stark, still rules the North from the fortress of Riverrun. Robb plots against his despised Lannister enemies, even as they hold his sister hostage at King's Landing, the seat of the Iron Throne. Meanwhile, making her way across a blood-drenched continent is the exiled queen, Daenerys, mistress of the only three dragons still left in the world....But as opposing forces maneuver for the final titanic showdown, an army of barbaric wildlings arrives from the outermost line of civilization. In their vanguard is a horde of mythical Others, a supernatural army of the living dead whose animated corpses are unstoppable. As the future of the land hangs in the balance, no one will rest until the Seven Kingdoms have exploded in a veritable storm of swords....

It gets Machiavellian as hell this week on People we Know as we welcome Joe Dosch back to the Woodry's Hardware Studio to talk about why the House Lannister might not be all that bad. Hint: it's all about context. And in a kinda-long intro segment, John and Andy try to get at the heart of what it means to be a good fan, and just what it is we're trying to accomplish with this podcast.
Uh oh.. The shit's about to hit the fan as the irrepressible force of House Lannister meets the immovable object of House Stark. We'll be discussing lance busting jousts, badass grandpas and terrifying braziers (there fiery kind). And we end the cast on the most dramatic cliffhanger yet - a bloody fight to the death in the rain soaked streets of Kings Landing. As Ray Arnold said in Jurassic Park.. "Hold on to your butts!" Shark Liver Oil is a podcast about books. We take each one, break it down into bite size chunks and discuss it page by page. It's the most in depth discussion of the Game of Thrones novels that you'll find in a podcast.* If you've any comments to make on the cast or the book, email sharkliveroilpodcast@gmail.com or tweet us @sharkliveroil *probably
