Finally, the pair discuss how hacktivists crave publicity in return for very little actual hacking and Hewlett Packard Enterprise's (HPE) most recent investigation into another alleged data breach, before talking about the state of cyber crime reporting in the first month of 2025. Would your company pass the Fair and Reasonable Test? “People have started saying ‘well, we shouldn't just be thinking about could-we, but we should be thinking about should-we. And I think if you bundle up fair and reasonable, if you bundle up privacy as a human right, if you bundle up potential rights to claim against companies, that should-we questions could be your north star and your guiding light until we have actual legislation to live by.” – Lyn Nicholson, General Counsel, Holding Redlich. The Australian government has agreed in principle to many recommendations made in the review of the Privacy Act—one of which is the fair and reasonable test, which will require regulated entities to make an impact assessment before collecting personal data for products or services. If you've ever wondered what it feels like to be doing what you really love – that thing you felt called to do, even as a young child – for a living, you won't want to miss this episode. I first crossed paths with my guest, Ali Lowe, when she wrote an amazing cover story on one of The PR Hub clients, James Spenceley, for the Mosman Daily/North Shore Times a few years back (listen to my interview with James this season in episode 6, the link is below). Like most good stories, Ali's is one of risk, instinct, and perseverance. Despite a successful 20-year career as a journalist and editor in the UK and Australia, following the death of her brother, she left full-time work to be closer to and more present for her young family. While freelancing, she realised a passion for writing fiction and was accepted into a novel-writing course in 2019, and the rest is history. Described by The Weekend Australian as both “moving swiftly into the footsteps of Liane Moriarty '' and “one to watch”, it may make it sound at times like it all just fell into place one day, however her success has been anything but accidental. She's already two books in (her second novel, The Running Club, is out this month) and excited by and grateful for her new, very public image as an author. “Am I a brand now?!” she jokes. Importantly, for Ali, personal branding was never an ego trip or a commercial pursuit. Instead it meant tapping into the energy and wisdom of successful people she admired, building authentic connections with other writers, and of course, the discipline required to get the job done…and there are lessons in there for us all. Imagine you're that dinosaur kid! The one who knows all the names of all the things, and dreams of one day going to university to study palaeontology in order to become a palaeontologist. Of course, most dinosaur kids don't get to do that. But imagine you are one who makes it. You do get accepted into a palaeontology degree, and even better, make it through the first year! In this episode of Palaeo Jam, host Michael Mills chats with three students who've just completed their first year of a palaeontology degree at Flinders University. During the episode, we find out from Dylan Slinn, Natalie Jackson and Thomas Khajeh, what brought them to Flinders University, what they were expecting when they got here, and how it turned out across the year, both good and bad. So, why the title of the episode, “The Dinosaur Kids… Part 1”? At the end of the episode, we get a very definite commitment from all three to get back together at the end of second year, and record a follow-up episode. That'll be Part 2… and we're pretty sure we'll get a Part 3 and beyond as we follow the journey of these three dinosaur kids in pursuit of their dream! We can't wait to see how the journey for each of them unfolds! Whether in sports, work or life in general, ‘turning right' as a metaphor for exploring unknown territory intuitively resonates with audiences, regardless of their background. Many conversations and broad media attention while Kay was publishing his first book have confirmed that people are seeking a life beyond the daily hamster wheel. Kay Bretz Fastest-Ever Australian at 24 Hour World Championships I am a champion ultra-marathon runner (fastest-ever Australian at 24 Hour World Championships), corporate leader (ex-McKinsey consultant and senior leader at Woolworths and Coles), entrepreneur, keynote speaker, executive coach and author of Turning Right – Inspire the Magic. First and foremost, I'm an explorer. One day I turned right at my garden gate, just to realise that I'd never done that before. It was an image of how I was leading my life: full of control and not curious what was on offer beyond my self-imposed boundaries. Now, metaphorically speaking, I ‘turn right' to inspire the magic.
