Vivienne Taberer, Investment Director at Ninety One in Cape Town
This is Zack Fuss. Today, we're tackling a giant in a controversial and incredibly complex industry, UnitedHealth Group. At its recent apex, UNH was a half-trillion-dollar market cap business, the 15th largest listed business in the United States. Today, that market cap sits at just $275 billion. The company generates an excess of $400 billion in sales annually and produces $40 billion in EBITDA as it touches every facet of the American healthcare system. To break down UnitedHealthcare, I'm joined by Stephanie Niven, a co-PM of the Global Sustainable Equity Strategy within the Sustainable Equity Team at Ninety One. Stephanie has been following the company since 2012 and she helps us to unravel this intricate business. We explore how UnitedHealthcare operates as a fully integrated healthcare system from its insurance arm to its high-margin health services business. We also dive into the concept of value-based care, the recent headwinds from Medicare Advantage scrutiny, and whether the market is mispricing this complex giant amidst regulatory noise and leadership changes. Please enjoy this breakdown of UnitedHealth Group. In this episode of Unearthed, hosts John Reade and Joseph Cavatoni, Senior Market Strategists at the World Gold Council, welcome George Cheveley, Portfolio Manager at Ninety One, for an insightful look into the dynamics of the gold mining equities market. With gold hitting record highs throughout 2024 and again this year, they dig into why mining stocks haven't kept pace and what's driving the disconnect. George shares how investors should think about mining companies today, what factors influence their performance – from cost pressures to growth metrics – and how sentiment is starting to shift from earnings to value. The conversation also covers what kind of growth matters most to investors and how to think about mining equities in the context of broader portfolio decisions. Tune in for a detailed breakdown of what's behind the headlines – and subscribe to Unearthed on your favourite podcast platform to stay up to date. Additional Resources: Gold Demand Trends Q4 (Full Year) 2024 Gold Reserves by Country Notable Quotes: “One of the things that I have heard from time to time is a production cliff looming for some of the producers, maybe five to ten years out, because of the pain the industry went through and the slowdowns in exploration.” – John Reade “ The gold industry has changed. The management of the industry has changed, and part of that is because of the circumstances that they went through in the last cycle.” – John Reade “ I think my own view is we're never going to end up with too few gold companies because every day there's people starting up junior gold companies. There's always somebody trying. I do think we probably could do with a bit more consolidation at the moment, but I also readily agree it's very hard to do.” – George Cheveley “I think time and timing is one of the big challenges and when we're feeling sorry for ourselves as fund managers. You know, sometimes we sit around and we say. The real problem with this job is we're talking to companies who are talking in decades and we're trying to service our clients who are talking in quarters, and we're trying to cover that spread, and it's pretty hard at times." – George Cheveley About World Gold Council We are a membership organisation that champions the role gold plays as a strategic asset, shaping the future of a responsible and accessible gold supply chain. This summary is less a trailer than a highlight reel. The year started with a new administration in the US and an explosion of the culture wars and backlash against DEI and ESG labelling. Even engagement has become more cumbersome and some may feel the hard won policies of years ago are going into reverse. Because we had lined up a list of industry experts with a focus on sustainable investing for this series, we had an excellent opportunity to ask them about the headwinds and the view of them. The views were surprisingly nuanced and positive, from the insights of a sustainable equity manager about the impact that was still happening, to the views of two founders of a nature based solutions manager about the decline of net zero alliances and how the shift of focus from carbon might be a good thing. The guests of Series 1 are Chelsea Smith of Bernstein Private Wealth, Anastasia Guha of Redington, Denise Le Gal of Brightworth, Abdiel Santiago of the Panama Sovereign Wealth Fund, Bjorn Thelander (formerly of the Dyson Family Office), Stephanie Niven of Ninety One, Rob Gardner and Eoin Murray of Rebalance Earth and Steve Neel of New Mexico Educational Retirement Board and Stephen Oxley of OXC. It's a new series with Cannibal Siren, folks! I know it's what you wanted, what can I say, I know what the people want. Unfortunately, however, we'e not monster-fucking on this one. Oh, no. No, no. Not that way, at least. There is consent involved in what Cannibal Siren does. Let's not get too far away from it, there is a monster in this one, and he's getting close to us in all the worst ways; Non-consentually. There is so much to be said about this one, and we will say it. And you will listen. And we will say more next episode, and hopefully you'll listen again. This is just part one of four, so let's just say that there are a lot more steps involved, here. What is this, AA? No, not unless AA stands for anonymous antagonism. And it doesn't.
