There's little worse than being told what you have to do, when you have to do it, and how. And especially when kids are involved, they're pretty good at digging in their heels and refusing. Ask any parent or teacher!   But we're still telling kids what they have to learn, how they have to learn it, and when. We're doing a disservice to them and, frankly, to the teachers who have to follow the prescribed curriculum.   Thank goodness teachers like Tanya King exist. Teachers who are using data and proven strategies to break the mold and truly get students excited about learning. Tanya, an award-winning 6th grade teacher in Washington state, champions the idea of letting go of control and letting students lead their own learning.    And what she's doing works! With kids regularly making two school years' of progress while in her care, they're no longer missing school or checking out mentally because they're bored or uninspired. She takes inspiration to the next level.   Listen in to find out how Tanya is doing it differently! About Tanya King: Tanya King, also known as Mrs. KB, is a 6th-grade teacher in the Edmonds School District. She is in her 22nd year of teaching, holds a BA in Elementary Ed, Special Education K-12, a Masters in Integrating Technology, and is National Board Certified. It is her mission to empower students to become lifelong learners and instill within them a belief they can reach any goal he/she sets for him/herself. By teaching students to believe in themselves and take ownership of their learning, her students know they can tackle any task. Students come to school because they have to; Mrs. KB has created a learner-driven class and kids come because they want to! Her mottos? Be the Captain of your Own Destiny! Feedback Mythos, Heroes, or Troy by Stephen Fry (rec’d by Alice) Questions 1. Hello! Two of my favorite books of all time are The Language of Flowers by Vanessa Diffenbaugh and The Sea of Tranquility by Katja Millay. The similarities I see — hopefully without spoiling too much — is that both books center on a young woman who has gone through a big traumatic event in the past, but you don’t know what it is at first and get clues as you go along. Also in both books, the main character meets a young man who eventually becomes a love interest, but he moves very slowly, is extremely respectful for her need for space, and does not “heal her trauma with his love”; instead, he provides her a safe haven of unconditional acceptance so she can reach the point on her own where she’s ready to seek outside support. What books can you recommend that follow a similar arc? -Jessica 2. I am getting my BA in Elementary Ed with an endorsement in Early Childhood Education and we need to read books from the following categories: Native American Lit, Latinx Lit, Asian American Lit, African Lit, and “other” (so, books that focus on non-mainstream religions, family structures, etc.). I am new to the world of Early Childhood so I am hopelessly lost. Would appreciate and love your help.  -either Kate or Hana (sorry!) 3. Hello! I was the person from Orkney, Scotland, last year who asked for fiction recommendations around trees. This was because we don’t have any on our island as the Vikings chopped down all the trees way back when and due to COVID-19 I had been unable to travel south to visit any woodlands and so I was missing trees. Thank you very much for those recommendations. Well it’s 2021 and I still haven’t left the island to hug some trees but rather than dwell on what I don’t have I am embracing the wonderful coastal world I live in. So, I am looking for fiction recommendations that have a marine conservation theme. Due to some super-trawlers that came through the area we have sadly had some issues with strandings and deaths of marine animals, particularly orcas (Killer Whales) and seals (we call them selkies) and it is now a rare week where I do not come across one or the other. Any fiction recommendations with a theme of marine life or conservation would be much appreciated. Thank you, love the podcast xxx Side note: Orkney is derived from the old norse name Orkneyjar which means Seal Islands ‘Orkn’ = Seals ‘eyjar’ = islands.  -Isobel 4. I am looking for more romantic heroes like Dawsey Adams from The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society. The strong, silent type with still waters running very deep. Someone who falls hard but doesn’t know what to do about it. Something with lots of pining! I’d be interested in either genre romance or a significant romantic subplot in any other genre. -Leslie 5. Hi, love the show! I am looking for a recommendation for a friend who is having a hard time. She is looking for books that will be very captivating and engaging, and although they don’t have to be constantly uplifting, hopeful would be vastly preferable to bleak. Recently she has enjoyed Eleanor Oliphant is completely fine, Olive Kitteridge and books by Hannah Kent – although those were far more brutal than she is looking for right now. I recommended Sorcerer to the Crown and she is loving it. Fantasy welcomed. Thank you so much! -Laura 6. I work as a page at my local library, so I tend to judge a book by its cover when I’m shelving. I look at the cover first, then read the title, and then read the synopsis. If the cover doesn’t catch me, I usually don’t read the synopsis. Can you give me recommendations for books that you thought didn’t have appealing covers (or just didn’t catch your eye) but had a story that turned out to be super great? No romance, but all other genres (including nonfiction) welcome! -Kari 7. With the world as crazy as it is now I’d love to find some really happy novels to dig into. It doesn’t matter the genre but I just need some escapism. -Lauren Books Discussed Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine by Gail Honeyman (tw: child abuse) All The Birds, Singing by Evie Wyld (cw: sexual assault, death of animals) First Laugh: Welcome Baby by Rose Ann Tahe, Nancy Bo Flood, Jonathan Nelson Amy Wu and the Perfect Bao by Kat Zhang and Charlene Chua Island of the Sea Women by Lisa See The Man With the Compound Eyes by Wu Ming-Yi, translated by Darryl Sterk (cw: suicidal ideation, loss of a child) Wrong to Need You by Alisha Rai How To Catch A Queen by Alyssa Cole (cw: description of panic and anxiety attacks) The Ruthless Lady’s Guide to Wizardry by CM Waggoner Howl’s Moving Castle by Diana Wynne Jones The Jetsetters by Amanda Eyre Ward (tw: suicide) Big Friendship by Aminatou Sow and Ann Friedman TheBookish Life of Nina Hill by Abbi Waxman American Hippo by Sarah Gailey See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

I find parenting to be easier in some ways when we as parents are working with some basic child development information. For example, it’s easier for me to understand why my baby wants to put everything in their mouth if I know they are teething and that biting down on anything provides some relief from the pain of teething. Or that if a tween is unusually moody or distant it could be because she is getting ready to get her first period. These are all basic child development facts that are easy to remember…and easy to forget in the moment. There are lots of developmental milestones that come at various ages and the more we can learn about these milestones as parents—see them in our kids now AND have some info about what is to come—the more we can show up with compassion for what is happening (or going to happen) naturally. We’ve all heard of the 5 senses (maybe you’ve even heard of a 6th sense), but in some education circles, there are 12 senses that develop in 7-year cycles over 21+ years. Our guest today, Hannah Freed, is here to share her incredibly comprehensive knowledge about the 12 senses with us as a way to empower us as parents. The more we know, the better we can show up and support our kids where they are developmentally. Hannah’s Bio: Hannah first experienced her passion for serving populations with special needs when she was 16 and an exchange student in Germany. She did an internship during her 11th grade year at a Camphill community. Camphill is an international movement of intentional communities designed to meet the needs of children, youth, and adults with developmental disabilities through a combination of community life, the arts, and work on the land. (She talks more about it in the show—it’s really interesting). Since then she has continued on a path of working with children to help make their learning experiences are positive and fun. Hannah has taught in both public and private schools for 20 years. For the past 13 years she has been the Educational Support Therapist in two different Waldorf schools, addressing foundational learning and behavioral issues. She is also a mama of two amazing boys. In her spare time, she paddles and races Hawaiian outrigger canoes and soaks up vitamin D and Sea. CREDENTIALS: · BS Special Ed. from Appalachian State University in NC · MEd. Elementary Ed. with Waldorf Teacher Certification from Antioch University of New England in NH · Waldorf Remedial Teacher certification through Association of Healing Arts · Advanced Practitioner certification through Integrated Listening Systems · Safe and Sound Protocol Certification · Trained in HANDEL and Brain Gym Methods You are going to learn a lot today. (I know I did!) And I am so excited for you, mama! In this episode Hannah & I talk about: · What the 12 senses of child development are · The Lower Senses: (0-7yo) Touch, Life, Movement, & Balance · The Middle Senses: (7-14yo) Smell, Taste, Sight, & Warmth · The Higher Senses: (14-21yo) Hearing, Speech, Concept, & Ego · We dive into each of the senses—what they are, how to support them, healthy & unhealthy presentations of them, and more · The reality of children today · The importance of meaningful work (i.e. chores) · How we can have sensory issues as adults (and see ourselves in the 12 senses even years later) · Healthy diet and the role of food in development FULL SHOW NOTES AVAILABLE AT: WWW.ELEVATINGMOTHERHOOD.COM Follow Lori Beth on Instagram: www.instagram.com/loribethauldridge
