How can we teach our children and teens to live out their faith and devotion to Jesus Christ in a culture that is largely ignorant of and even averse to the Gospel? One powerful teaching tool which we oftentimes overlook are the stories we can pass on regarding those who over the course of church history have devoted themselves, warts and all, to faithfully following Jesus Christ, regardless of the cost. On this episode of Youth Culture Matters, I chat with biographer Ellen Vaughn about Elisabeth Elliot, a modern-day follower of Christ whose ups and downs filled life and devotion to Christ offers a powerful example of what it means to live counter-culturally for the sake of the Gospel.
We don't usually think of the Bible account of Ruth and Boaz when we talk about time management or adoption. However, their story has useful applications for both. Join Ila and Jill as they welcome Lauren Bassford and Ellen Vaughn to consider the importance of leaving the corners of your field.

Elisabeth Elliot was an imperfect yet faithful Christ-follower with a complex life story. This week, Ellen Vaughn returns to discuss Being Elisabeth Elliot, volume two of her amazing biography of Elliot's life. Tune in to hear about Elisabeth's return from foreign missions, her writings, her struggles with loneliness, and the complexities of her later life and marriages. Strong Women Podcast 34. The Life of Elisabeth Elliot with Ellen Vaughn Becoming Elisabeth Elliot by Ellen Vaughn Being Elisabeth Elliot by Ellen Vaughn These Strange Ashes by Elisabeth Elliot International Cooperating Ministries Creation is about more than HOW God created the world. It's about why. From the beginning, God's purpose has been to dwell with His image bearers in unbroken fellowship. It's tempting to think that our sin ruined that plan, and that Jesus was God's Plan B. But as Edward Klink says, Jesus and the Church were always Plan A. More than that, God is not replacing creation; He's renewing it, and you and I have been invited to participate in that renewal as God's agents of redemption. Klink's latest book, The Beginning and End of All Things, will give you a bigger, more accurate perspective on God's plan for creation and your place in it. Elisabeth Elliot's voice was a fixture voice for thousands of living rooms through her 13-year daily radio show. After her husband Jim Elliot was killed on the mission field her best-selling book was the inspiration for the faith of three generations. She was a prolific author and one of the few prominent female voices of the church of her time. She was a purity culture and traditional gender roles icon for thousands of women. Her words, and expressed views at that time have been polarizing for many Christians. I've since learned her true story was more complex than any of us knew. Elisabeth Elliot was a young missionary in Ecuador when members of a remote Amazonian indigenous people group killed her husband Jim and his four colleagues. And yet, she stayed in the jungle with her young daughter to minister to the very people who had thrown the spears, demonstrating the power of Christ's forgiveness. Elisabeth went on to write dozens of books, host a long-running radio show, and speak at conferences all over the world. And while things in the limelight might have looked golden, her suffering continued refining her in many different and unexpected ways. Author Ellen Vaughn was with us some time ago to talk about the early years of Elisabeth Elliot. Her first book is Becoming Elisabeth Elliot.Just released is the second volume in the authorized biography, Being Elisabeth Elliot. “Is God Dead?” a 1966 Time magazine cover asked. A 1971 Time cover heralded “The Jesus Revolution.” What caused this cultural shift in the radical 1960s that still impacts us today? Kelsey Grammer stars in a new film that tells part of the story: how a hippie, a drugged-out teenager, and a straight-laced California pastor linked up to bring hope to millions. A Lionsgate film, “Jesus Revolution” is based in part on the book of the same name by Greg Laurie and Ellen Vaughn. The cast includes Grammer (“Frasier”), Jonathan Roumie (“The Chosen”), Anna Grace Barlow (“The Big Leap”), and...Article Link
As we reach the end of 2022 and move into a new year, does this passage not ask us to define what our aim is for 2023? Is it the “one thing” that Paul and Mary embraced? “Your next step now is this: set some clear objectives. Ask yourself: where would I like to be a year from now? Robert Mager, a consultant in the field of education, says that a well-stated objective defines where a person will be once he or she has achieved the intended outcome. ‘Clearly defined objectives,' it has been said, ‘enable us to see truth as actions, not abstractions.' If this sounds too regimented for your temperament, consider that your goal in life may actually be to remain comfortable rather than to be conformed to Christ. Don't settle for a decaffeinated form of Christianity – one that promises not to keep you awake at night!” (Selwyn Hughes). What is my “one thing” – decaffeinated or strong brew? Paul offers an awful alternative. "For many walk, of whom I have told you often, and now tell you even weeping, that they are the enemies of the cross of Christ: whose end is destruction, whose god is their belly, and whose glory is in their shame – who set their mind on earthly things” (vv18-19).‘Many'? Is it different today? Is it different from me? “Furthermore, some one-time followers of Jesus had given up and were now living as ‘enemies of the cross of Christ' (v18). There was a danger that some Christians, in making their lifestyle choices, might follow them in abandoning the logic of the cross, opting instead for human wisdom and power and the self-interest they spawn.” Selwyn Hughes defines that “one thing” very clearly. “Christians need not be in any doubt about the direction in which God wants them to go, or what is the Creator's highest purpose for their life. It is receiving God's love, and then channelling that love into the lives of those around us, including those who are discouraged or wounded. God wants you to be a caring person, sensitive to the needs of others, and aware of how He wants you to minister to them. Whatever else God may have for you to do in this world, His highest purpose is to make you a channel of His tender, loving care to others. Once you grasp this, then you are on your way to fulfilling your highest destiny.” For that I need to press forward, “eagerly waiting for the Saviour, the Lord Jesus Christ, who will transform our lowly body that it may be conformed to His glorious body, according to the working by which He is able even to subdue all things to Himself” (vv20-21). I need to be running that way myself and helping as many as I can in the same direction, so my life and my message are “one thing”. Is that not a great 2023 ambition?A final thought. “Passion shines bright, with the energy of a sprint, but can be over in an instant: someone launches into a project with wonderful ideas, but flakes out at the first hurdle. Perseverance may seem very dull in comparison, like a slow marathon. The faithful plodder, reliable and self-disciplined, may be less noticed but invariably respected. In this text, both qualities are beautifully combined in Paul as we witness his single-minded perseverance inspired by a passionate response to God's grace.”What do I need for that special race, holding on to both ‘passion' and ‘perseverance'?“(1) We must forget our sins. Obviously we must remember our sins in order to confess them. But having done so, we must let them go. The fact that God forgets is like calling Heaven and hearing, ‘There is no record of any offence.' (2) We must forget our shame. Paul could have been a prime candidate for shame. He had presided over the harassment, imprisonment, torture and murder of innocent human beings. But God's grace is stronger than our shame. It was defanged when Jesus died and rose again” (Word For Today quoting Ellen Vaughn).(3) Then “I focus on this one thing: forgetting the past and looking forward to what lies ahead” (verse 13 NLT).

We all complain, right? So what do we do with verses like “do all things without grumbling” (Phil 2:14)? Does this mean we're supposed to gloss over our frustrations and just smile all the time? Or is there a way to complain without sinning? Today, we talk about the difference between godly lament and sinful complaining. The pattern of lament actually includes complaint; in our lament, God uses our complaints to knit our hearts to His. Lauren helps us see how this can play out in our everyday lives.
