This week we discuss Gabriel Bier Gislason's queer Jewish horror film ATTACHMENT (2:51), a smartly-told tale about a Danish woman (Josephine Park) who falls for a Jewish woman (Ellie Kendrick) but discovers some disturbing things after traveling back to London with her. Next, Megan and Dave cover MAGIC MIKE'S LAST DANCE (21: 47), Steven Soderbergh's mediocre final chapter in the MAGIC MIKE series. Then we review a movie that two of us have a very visceral reaction to — THE OUTWATERS (39:16), Robbie Banfitch's found footage horror film about a group of friends who get terrorized in the Mojave desert. ATTACHMENT is a horror romance about Maja, a has-been actress in Denmark, who falls in love with Leah, a young, Jewish academic visiting from the UK. When Leah suffers a mysterious seizure, Maja fears their whirlwind romance might be cut short and decides to follow Leah back to her home in London. There, Maja meets her new downstairs neighbour Leah's mother, Chana. An overbearing, seemingly religious and highly secretive woman, Chana seems resistant to all of Maja's attempts to win her over. And as Maja notices strange occurrences in the building, she begins to suspect that Chana's secrets could be much darker than first anticipated. Written for Josephine Park, Gislason's longtime friend, and loosely inspired by stories from her life. Set in the Hasidic area of North London, where Gislason lived for years, the film draws heavily on Yiddish folklore art and literature, portraying a highly fictionalized — but deeply affectionate — rendering of the culture that originated them. Award-winning actor David Dencik (No Time to Die, Men & Chicken) Josephine Park, Ellie Kendrick, and Sofie Gråbøl. Director Gabriel Bier Gislason joins us for a conversation on writing the script with a specific actor in mind, drawing upon his own religious background in creating this gripping folkloric Danish tale of demonic possession, Jewish tradition, a mother's love and other intimate relationships. In a complete change from last week's episode, the 2016 remake of the 1949 Ealing Studios classic Whisky Galore is about as close as you can get to the original source material without being a blatant copy and paste job! Eddie Izzard finally gets some lines in a movie covered on this show but is it worth it and do they deliver!? What IS the perfect remake and what are the qualifications? Why wasn't Mrs. Waggett given her own film? And why this pointless subplot about a "red case" that ultimately ends up meaning nothing?   Next week: The series presses forward with the Sylvester Stallone (and co-starring original lead Michael Caine) remake of Get Carter. In this episode Dario is joined at the Kino Teatr in St. Leonards by film director Hope Dickson Leach (@hopedickle) who introduces and discusses her newly released first feature The Levelling. Ellie Kendrick plays Clover, a young vet who has to reluctantly return to her father's farm after the sudden death of her brother. Deeply buried family tensions are brought to surface in a painful journey of guilt and self-examination told with an aesthetic precision that belies a low-budget first feature status. Hope outlines the production background and creative process behind this poignant and beautifully rendered drama.  The episode also features a interview with the founder of the Bechdel Test Fest Corrina Antrobus (@corrinacorrina). Corrina discusses the development of the organisation and ruminates on various themes related to the status of women in cinema.
