EVERY DAY IS MOTHER'S DAY—If The Full Bleed's second season had a theme, it just might be “We Made A New Magazine During the Pandemic.”  Listen to past episodes and you'll see that our collective and unprecedented existential crisis ended up producing a lot of magazines.Melissa Goldstein and Natalia Rachlin met as coworkers at the lifestyle brand Nowness in the UK. Later, with Melissa in LA and Natalia in Houston, they bonded over their new status as mothers: they had given birth a day apart. And they both found that magazines aimed at mothers were deficient. These titles spoke of babies and parenting and the decor of the baby's room, but they rarely spoke of the moms as… people. So they created Mother Tongue, a fresh look at womanhood and motherhood, and a kind of reclamation of both terms. The magazine functions as a conversation between like-minded moms from everywhere. Plus, like all modern media brands, Mother Tongue has great merch. The election looms large, of course, over the magazine and our discussion—we spoke a week after it and let's just say both Melissa and Natalia were still processing the results. But Mother Tongue is not going to shy away from talking about that either.—This episode is made possible by our friends at Freeport Press. A production of Magazeum LLC ©2021–2025

From just one candle, you can light a million candles without putting strain on the first candle. From one awakened being, you can set light into a million souls, so powerful is the light. If you go into a room full of light, but outside is darkness, and you open the curtain, that darkness won't come in. But if you go into a room which is dark and you open up a little tiny bit of a curtain, it will fill the whole room with light. Such is the power of the light. We are this light and we must discover this..." - Mooji "Swami Muktananda, in his guru kripa sad-hana, used to meditate intensely on his guru, Nityananda. He would visualize bringing him into his own body until he himself became Nitvananda. So intoxicated did he become in his devotion to his guru that there were times when he didn't know if he was Muktananda or Nityananda. A sense of that feeling of devotion comes from the first-century Odes of Solomon: My heart was split, and a flower appeared; and grace sprang up; and it bore fruit for my God. You split me, tore my heart open, filled me with love. You poured your spirit into me; I knew you as I know myself. My eyes are radiant with your spirit; my nostrils fill with your fragrance. My ears delight in your music, and my face is covered with your dew. Blessed are the men and women who are planted on your earth, in your garden, who grow as your trees and flowers grow, who transform their darkness to light. Their roots plunge into darkness; their faces turn toward the light. There is infinite space in your garden; all men, all women are welcome here; all they need do is enter." - Polishing the Mirror, Ram Dass

Creatively Down and Dirty is our new podcast series where we deep-dive with one creator into one project. Prepare to hear it all, from what sparked the initial idea from the high-highs to the low-lows during the making of it and ultimately, how it got released out into the wide world. What began as a commission for a tour documentary turned into Antony Crook's debut feature film, and all because of a global pandemic! In this very special episode, we caught up with Antony amidst the madness of SXSW, where he premiered If the Stars had a Sound, celebrating legendary Scottish band Mogwai.Originally from Manchester and now based in Upstate New York with his family, Antony started out as a photographer, and has shot icons from David Hockney to Snoop Dogg. He then made the leap into filmmaking with a music video for his friend's band, Mogwai, which went viral on Nowness over a decade ago. Now he's come full circle with this film that reflects the personal relationships, integrity and creativity that went into the making of it, and it's been perfectly summarised by The Austin Chronicle as “A true underdog story and a breathtaking look at community-building”.From throwing out the rulebook to being given Mogwai's music stems, from sifting through days of GoPro footage to sourcing funding to inviting fans to be part of the journey…Antony reveals the depth, detail and devotion it takes to get a project of this scale off the ground and into the world.“I didn't want the film to be like anything else out there. Mogwai have always done their own thing, their way, and this film had to be consistent with that”If the Stars had a Sound is a must-watch and screens later this month at various festivals, including Sheffield DocFest and Raindance Film Festival. Educational environments for students with disabilities range from a complete denial of formal educational services to equal participation in all aspects of the education system. Educational experiences of students with disabilities fall into one of four categories: exclusion, segregation, integration and inclusive. (from the Alana Report) My guest today is director and filmmaker, Olivier Bernier, who among many attributes, is the dad to 6-year-old Emilio, who was born with Down Syndrome. In his work, he naturally wanted to document his son's experience entering into school, only to find out that Emilio was being segregated from the general school population. This lead Olivier on a journey to advocate, and educate people on the importance of inclusion in schools for every child regardless of ability.  In his film, “Forget Me Not”, he looks at the way our kids are being taught, and how the outdated system isn't set up to nurture and teach every child. He shares how inclusiveness is beneficial to ALL children and the research backs up that claim. If you or someone you know has a child that has learning differences, been segregated, or you aren't getting the support you need, you will want to listen to this episode and watch, “Forget Me Not.” For Olivier's The Alana Report – a summary of the evidence on inclusive education, developed by some of the foremost experts in the field. It comes as no surprise that Christian Larson, the creative half of the founding duo behind the imaginative Swedish undergarment brand CDLP, cut his creative teeth with early careers in visual world building: first editing, then directing.Growing up outside Stockholm, Christian studied drumming from an early age, and his sense of rhythm is perhaps the strongest visible through line in a career that has spanned multiple industries. You can see it in his award winning editing on projects like the Grammy and Emmy-nominated concert film 'ON THE RUN' featuring Beyoncé & Jay-Z, and projects for Lady Gaga, Daft Punk, Abba, Taylor Swift, Britney Spears and Dior. That same sense of rhythm won him the director chair on ad campaigns for Cartier, Jimmy Choo, Pepsi, Mercedes-Benz, and Nowness, as well as music videos for Sigur Rós, Kylie Minogue, Icona Pop, and Swedish House Mafia. When Christian's directorial career was keeping him frequently on the road, his best friend Andreas began traveling with him. One day they found themselves in a hotel room in Rio, chastising each other for their mutually terrible choices in underwear, and an idea was born. The quest began to develop a superior product to what was on the market, a product crafted from better materials and made in Europe, where they could have control over their manufacturing process. Once an unconsidered, boring, 'non-decision' purchase relegated to the sock drawer, CDLP won early support from men of all ages, who finally felt sexy in their improved undergarments.Over the last six years the brand has grown to include swim and loungewear, and a women's line launched a few months ago. True to his rhythm, Christian's video campaigns are masterfully shot and tightly edited… Not to mention the CDLP mixtape series, which is fantastic. We caught up with Christian to chat about curiosity as a driving imperative, why hotels make the most cinematic backdrops, and how an unexpected moment, like seeing 35 millimeter film for the first time, can alter your perspective and cement your commitment to a creative destiny.Slide on your best underwear, and enjoy this conversation with the brilliant Christian Larson.Presented by NUVO Magazine. Rad Pereira is an old soul-young heart theater artist, writer, educator, and community activist with a very clear sense of purpose and direction --- defined by questions like: How can we imagine, and manifest alternate futures together? Was my body conditioned to survive in a world not made for me? and Can the natural world function as a moral compass? BIOI am a multi-spirit mixed Black, Indigenous Brazilian, Jewish (im)migrant artist currently based in Lenapehoking (Brooklyn). My creative practices range from social sculpture, to popular theatrical and TV/film performance, to participatory liberatory artmaking and healing that weaves together an Afro-futurist longing for transformative justice and queer (re)Indigenization of culture.I put in a lot of hours to get to where, how and why I am today, with the guidance of many mentors and dedication to cultivating an ancestor led, faithful intuition. I was trained up in Eurocentric theatre and dance on scholarship at Interlochen Arts Academy and Pace University. I kept the parts of that training which were useful and shed the constricting parts. Since then I have been building connection with my ancestral modes of creativity, storytelling and next world building. With my community I created The (Im)Migrant Hustle and produced Bang Bang Gun Amok I + II at Abrons Art Center. With their artner at You Are Here, LILLETH, they created Media Tools for Liberation at JackNY, Decolonization Rave and Cosmic Commons. In 2017 I was NYC Public Artist in Residence with my collaborators (Keelay Gipson, Britton Smith, Josh Adam Ramos), at the Department of Cultural Affairs and Children's Services working with LGBQTIA foster youth; As an actor and director, I have contributed to stories at HBO, CBS, MTV, National Black Theatre, MITU350, The Public Theater, La Mama etc., Shakespeare Theatre in DC, Pittsburgh Public Theatre, New York Theatre Workshop, ART Boston, The Bushwick Starr, Target Margin, Ars Nova, New Ohio, Clubbed Thumb, The Flea Theatre, Sesame Street, Theatre 167 and various online media platforms. As a cultural organizer and facilitator, I have collaborated with the Disney Theatrical Group, United Nations, Queens Museum, Rio de Janeiro Museum, Instituto Republica, MOCA, SITI Company Thought Center, A Blade of Grass, SUPERBLUE, Broadway Advocacy Coalition, The 8th Floor, Working Woman of Color Conference, Dance/NYC Symposium, and Culture/Shift. I have taught performance classes and workshops at Pace University, Interlochen Arts Academy, NET, Americans for the Arts and The Door.Currently, I'm the Director of Engagement and Impact with New York Stage & Film, while shifting between cultural work in performance, education, social sculpture and community organizing. Louesa is a multimedia and multigenre creative, floral artist, printmaker, painter, textile designer, curator, and author. You may recall our conversation several years ago around her first book: Foraged Flora. In Punk Ikebana, Louesa starts from a place of reverence for tradtion, in particular those of Japan, but also from a place of "peace-punk, Do-No-Harm." Ikebana, “the way of the flowers,” has been studied formally in Japan and beyond for centuries. In Punk Ikebana, Louesa explains and riffs on the art form's classic rules—and then demonstrates how to seasonally, sensually, and meaningfully bend them. The book highlights stunning arrangements and installations that unite the cultural meanings and wise elegance of a traditional perspective with an inviting freedom from convention for anyone to feel welcome into.

Five writers and artists not normally associated with classical music, discuss a specific example of Vaughan Williams' work to which they have a personal connection, and why it speaks to them. Following on from the successful Five Kinds of Beethoven Radio 3 essay series in 2020, where a wide range of Beethoven fans shared their personal relationship to the composer and his work, this new series gives similar treatment to Vaughan Williams. Our essayists share their unexpected perspective on Vaughan Williams' work, taking it outside the standard ‘English pastoral' box, in a series of accessible essays, part of the Vaughan Williams season on Radio 3. Luke Turner – nature writer and music journalist The Wasps – Aristophanic Suite was an EMI and John Player Special cassette tape that Luke's family listened to on long car journeys in the 1980s. Obviously the cassette opens with The Lark Ascending, but like a pop smash hit drawing your attention to an album, that piece was merely the introduction to The Wasps - Aristophanic Suite on the second side, played by the London Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Vernon Handley. It became the soundtrack to Luke's growing awareness of the English landscape as it passed by the windows, not in a simple, bucolic way, but the complexities of the place, the baked bean orange of traffic lights on the M62 over the Yorkshire Moors, the strange Cold War military installations that seemed to be everywhere, motorway reservations and the endless traffic jams around the Kings Lynn Roundabout. The piece also captures for Luke an awareness of how music works, how it combines with emotion and experience to become integral to memory, how something called The Wasps could have next to nothing to do with the insects, how his young mind could place onto this music whatever his imagination brought forward. It feels like many of his generation and certainly in his profession as a music journalist see Vaughan Williams as quite an establishment figure or quite conservative, but The Wasps was psychedelic music that made inroads into Luke's imagination, and unleashed the possibilities of sound connecting to place. Luke Turner is a writer and editor. He co-founded the influential music website The Quietus where he runs a regular podcast and radio show. He has contributed to the Guardian, Dazed & Confused, Vice, NME, Q, Mojo, Monocle, Nowness and Somesuch Stories, among other publications. Peter Saville is a man of the moment—and has been, again and again, throughout the past five decades. Raised in Manchester, England, in the sixties—in tandem with the growing prominence of counterculture, the rise of anti-war sentiments, and the birth of pop—Saville developed early on a keen eye and ear for the zeitgeist, or what he terms “nowness.” In his adolescence, he took up a fervent interest in music and in record covers in particular, and went on to art school to study graphic design. In his final year, he was commissioned to design the very first posters for the punk music venue The Factory, which would soon morph into the legendary independent record label Factory Records. Across his prolific, nearly 50-year-long career in graphic design and art direction, Saville has created album covers for Joy Division and New Order (most iconically, the one for Joy Division's debut studio album, Unknown Pleasures); branding for clients including Ferragamo, Burberry, and Aston Martin; and more recently, even Kvadrat fabric designs—each drawing inspiration from the spirit of their times—that can be called nothing short of era-defining. Woven across all of his work are provocative dialogues between past, present, and future. On this episode, Saville speaks with Andrew about coming of age in the punk and post-punk worlds, the increasing impossibility of tracking “nowness,” and creating literal signs of the times.Special thanks to our Season 6 sponsor, L'ÉCOLE, School of Jewelry Arts.Show notes:Peter Saville[12:11] Kvadrat Technicolour[01:10:48] Power, Corruption & Lies album cover[42:21] Factory Records[50:15] FAC1 poster[50:15] Haçienda[53:13] FAC 2[29:23] Unknown Pleasures album cover[01:22:13] Closer album cover[01:24:43] “Blue Monday” cover[01:35:44] The Apartment[01:39:29] Show Studio

Having released their debut album “Mesonoxian”, co-produced by Ingmar Kamalagharan and Cherif Hashizume (Jon Hopkins, Brian Eno, David Byrne) in late 2017, collecting support on the way from i-D, Stereogum, Clash and Line of Best Fit online as well as radio support across Radio 2, 3, 6Music, BBC London and the Asian Network, the album campaign culminated in a sold out show at London's legendary ICA. “A gorgeous listen from start to finish...brave at every turn” Album Review, Line of Best Fit Since then Anil has immersed themself once again in the creative process, contributing co-writes/features the debut album of legendary producer Guy Sigsworth (Björk, Imogen Heap, Robyn), Björk percussionist Manu Delago's Silver Kobalt album as well as taking on several bespoke commissions for sync, contributing choral arrangements to queer artist and activist Nakhane's debut album, and co-writing tracks for The Cinematic Orchestra side-project Hunrosa. In October 2020 Anil Sebastian's immersive short film Daffodil was released on NOWNESS. Daffodil has been created with support from Momentum Funding by PRS Foundation, Arts Council and National Lottery   Directed by Thiing Studios and written by Anil Sebastian, Daffodil explores the future of artificial intelligence and looks at what it means to be human and how we define identity. Combining animation by Thomas Rawle with slick live action footage and archival footage from Sebastian's childhood, Daffodil is a surreal examination of the moral implications of artificial intelligence through Sebastian's imagination. Set in the near future, Daffodil tells the story of a scientist (played by Anil Sebastian themself) gone rogue and we see them attempting to bring back the conscious mind of a child in the form of an AI. In a parallel, otherworldly meta-verse this playful creature is being created through animation. Paired effortlessly with the film and archival footage, Sebastian's exquisite avant-garde art pop soundtrack provides the perfect backdrop for this mesmerising cinematic experience. The film was shown at Normal? Festival of the Brain as well as at a private screening underground at The Brunel Shaft in London.  For Sebastian's cinematic debut, they have collaborated with an impressive list of some of the most forward thinking musicians, artists and thinkers in the UK. Sebastian holds a degree in Physics and Philosophy and they are one of the most unique voices and producers in the UK scene having worked with some of the most iconic global stars such as Imogen Heap, U2 and Bjork producer Guy Sigsworth. Daffodil also sees a contribution by Anil's brother Ingmar Kamalagharan as the co-producer of the film and live drummer on the soundtrack. Kamalagharan has a degree in Astronomy from UCL and works at the UK Space Agency  and he is a long-time collaborator of the producer and innovator Cherif Hashizume (David Byrne, Jon Hopkins, Brian Eno) in machine learning, interactive music installations and innovative software. Daffodil is a Descartesian meditation on existence and consciousness. As technology continues to infiltrate our public and private life, how can we reach an authentic form of being? Can an artificial intelligence gain consciousness and can it truly exist? Would you bring back someone you lost and if so, would they really be them? By combining science fiction elements with intimate, personal storytelling through encapsulating visuals and soundtrack, Daffodil is a film not to miss.  http://www.anilsebastian.com https://www.instagram.com/anil.sebastian

I am Ronn Pawo McLane and this is the Backyard Buddhist Podcast where we continually seek everyday enlightenment for the benefit of ourselves and all other beings.  I have invited my friend Brooke Beets to join us today in the backyard.  Welcome Brooke!   We often find ourselves in a state of dissatisfaction because our wants do not seem to add up to our haves.  I, like many of you, did my time attempting to manifest the life and the material things that I wanted only to find myself disappointed with the results.  So why does this happen?
