In a surprising move, Paramount has officially canceled the ambitious sci-fi series Halo after just two seasons, despite its devoted fan base and an improved second season. Based on the acclaimed video game, Halo follows Master Chief played by Pablo Schreiber and his AI companion Cortana played by Jen Taylor as they navigate a galactic war between humans and the alien Covenant. Despite mixed reviews and controversy over deviations from the source material, the show managed to gain traction. However, all hope is not lost; producers are exploring options to continue the series on another platform.

Halo Season 2 looks to be dead on arrival, at least with Halo fans. Despite saying that the sex scene in Season 1 was a huge mistake, actor Pablo Schreiber says Master Chief totally NEEDS to take his helmet off and you're all gonna have to deal with it. ➡️ Tip Jar and Fan Support: http://ClownfishSupport.com ➡️ Official Merch Store: http://ShopClownfish.com ➡️ Official Website: http://ClownfishTV.com Additional Context: The Halo TV series, based on the iconic video game franchise, sparked considerable controversy among fans due to the decision to frequently have the protagonist, Master Chief, remove his helmet. This choice diverged from the video games, where Master Chief rarely, if ever, takes off his helmet, and his face is never shown, allowing players to project themselves onto the character. Pablo Schreiber, the actor portraying Master Chief, has strongly defended this decision, emphasizing its importance for storytelling in a long-form television format. Schreiber argues that showing the character's face is essential for audiences to connect with and understand the character's interior life over an extended narrative. He stated in an interview with SFX Magazine, as reported by GameSpot, "In order to examine the discrepancy between these two versions of the character [Chief and John-117], you can't tell that story without taking the helmet off". However, this approach has not been well-received by a significant portion of the Halo fanbase. Fans have expressed their dissatisfaction by editing promotional materials for the TV series to include Master Chief wearing his helmet. The criticism extends beyond just the helmet issue, as fans have also been unhappy with other creative decisions in the series, such as a controversial sex scene involving Master Chief and other narrative elements that deviate from the original game lore. Schreiber has also commented on the sex scene, calling it a "huge mistake." The backlash to this scene and the overall handling of Master Chief's character in the TV adaptation highlights the challenges and complexities of adapting beloved video game franchises to different media formats, where expectations and interpretations of characters can vary widely between mediums and audiences. The Halo Series on Paramount+ Review On today's episode of Grief Burrito Hazz is joined by Ryan from Kidnapped by Wizards to discuss their thoughts on the entire first season of Halo; the new original series on Paramount+ (using Amazon Prime for us UK viewers). The Halo Series story takes place in what's called the Silver Timeline, it stands in its own canon from the games and is an alternative telling. Following Master Chief (played by Pablo Schreiber), Kwan Ha (Yerin Ha), Miranda Keyes (Olive Gray), Danny Sapani as Captain Keyes, fan favourites Kate Kennedy as Kai -125 and the voice of Jen Taylor back as Cortana. The man in the big green Mjolnir Armor must do all he can to protect one and seek out another Forerunner Artifact before The Covenant led by brainwashed human Makee (played by Charlie Murphy) can find it.  Not before Dr. Catherine Halsey, played incredibly by Natasha McElhone and Margaret Parangosky will do all they can to twist John-117 to their will. In Part One we discuss our overall thoughts on the introduction to the series universe and the characters that live in it, in Part Two we discuss out series highlights and finally in Part Three we discuss what we see coming next and how we felt about the finale! First in Previously On (6:13), Jason and Rosie dive deep (deeeeep) into the trailer for She-Hulk: Attorney-at-Law that sent gamma waves across the internet, offering comics lore, analysis on why She-Hulk will be a great addition to the MCU, and, of course, tons of theories for what could unfold. Then, (super) producer Chris joins to discuss the overall disappointing Halo finale, why it's always worth splurging on the CGI budget, and Pablo Schreiber's keister. In the Airlock (42:22), Jason, Rosie, and Chris are joined by other (super) producer Saul (who did indeed just refer to himself in third person as a super producer) to discuss some of their favorite comfort watches in times of illness. The first episode of Halo opened up strong and while we appreciate them trying to build out the world and a larger story, we really want them to get back to what got us in the door. We're in a golden age of streaming TV shows right now and what we've learned is that you can tell a really great story without needing 22 episodes. Halo has a 9 episode first season and each episode is almost an hour. Yet it doesn't feel as if the show is using that time efficiently to tell its story. We haven't seen Master Chief (or Silver Team) in action since that first drop-in during episode 1 and that's really a shame.  That doesn't mean that the story they're telling is bad. It's not. It just needs to be supplemented with more action. Right now the show isn't playing to Pablo Schreiber's strong suit. It's funny because The Mandalorian had the perfect blueprint for how to do this but Halo is really struggling to figure out exactly what story it's trying to tell and how to tell it. There are still some interesting things it's trying to do and plenty of time for it to right the ship. Let's hope they can.    Like what you hear? We all know that movies and TV shows based off of video games have an uphill battle. To be blunt, most absolutely suck. But things are slowly starting to change. The Halo series on Paramount+ is a great example of this. Years ago this would have been a 100 minute movie that was nothing but over-the-top fan service with a terrible story that felt like a rushed money grab. Instead Paramount+ has decided to bank on drawing folks in with ultra violence, a familiar yet unique story and making this adaptation a mini-series that is already guaranteed to go 2 seasons so it has time to grow. It's a smart calculation that makes for an interesting show that presents more positives than negatives in the first 2 episodes.  One thing should be made clear. This is NOT your kid's Master Chief.  If you have a problem with ultra violence then you don't want to watch this. The opening 10 minutes presents one of the best introduction of the main characters as Master Chief and his squad take out the Convenant that just massacred a town. And by "massacre" we mean killed just about every man, woman and child. As a matter of fact the first people killed in this show are some young teens that literally get picked apart. This series is definitely not just about showing violent alien deaths.  The backdrop of the UNC taking on the Covenant is the UNC's own violent campaign to put down a resistance from border colonies that want their own independence. It's very clear that this is a violent universe. Pablo Schreiber makes a pretty solid Master Chief. Schreiber can be very dry and mechanical at times but that's exactly what his role calls for. The rest of the cast is a mixed bag with some feel perfect for the role while others may need a bit more time to settle in. This is mostly due to the story that takes pieces of existing Halo lore while still trying to make something unique. It's ambitious and it remains to be seen if they can pull it off both story-wise and with this cast. The first two episodes of Halo are far from perfect. After the action packed opening of episode 1, things slow down a bit to try to fill out the world and set the scene a bit better. Halo feels like a mix of Starship Troopers and The Expanse. And that's enough to at least warrant checking out the full season. Halo premieres on Paramount+ on March 24th.
