David Fincher's The Killer is dropping on Netflix! It received a limited theatrical release, so we had to catch it on the big screen at the Laemmle Glendale. The film stars Michael Fassbender as an ascetic assassin who sticks to his plans and never improvises. But when a hit job goes awry, he's forced to go on the run while killing off some loose ends. The script is by Andrew Kevin Walker (Se7en, 8mm, Brainscan), and it's perfect material for Fincher, who directs the hell out of it. Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross provide the synth score. The cast also includes Arliss Howard, Charles Parnell, Kerry O'Malley, Sala Baker, Sophie Charlotte, and Tilda Swinton. Fire up your Netflix and watch it, and then hear our hawt take!

On this SPECIAL EDITION of The Movie Podcast, Daniel and Anthony are joined by HENRY CZERNY aka KITTRIDIGE of Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One, making his return since the 1996 original film. Just in time for the theatrical release of the highly anticipated Top Gun: Maverick, we are joined by actor and voiceover artist Charles Parnell who chats with us about working on the film that's four years in the making, how actors like Sidney Poitier was a huge influence on him growing up, and how his younger self would react to hearing that he'd star in the sequel to one of the biggest films of the 80s.   Parnell said that the younger cast members portraying the Top Gun pilots, including Miles Teller, Glenn Powell, Monica Babaro and Lewis Pullman, underwent an intense flight training program that star Tom Cruise designed, sharing “I tell all the young actors how happy I am for them, how I proud I am of them and how impressed I am that they went through and survived this ‘Tom Cruise training camp' and have done what they've done in this film. I can't wait to see their careers blow up. It's a joy to see their rise just beginning.”   Top Gun: Maverick is in theatres everywhere May 27th.

Join us – Pete Wright and Andy Nelson – as we continue our 10 Year Anniversary series with Rees' feature version of her short film Pariah. There's a lot to discuss about Pariah, from the performances to the filmmaking style. We love all of the performances in this film, but Adepero Oduye as Alike, our protagonist, is the heart of this film. Her journey of coming out as a lesbian is a powerful one, and we're right along the ride with her from the start of the film. But all the performances in Pariah are great. Pernell Walker as Alike's best friend Laura. Aasha Davis as her first love Bina. Charles Parnell and Kim Wayans as her parents. Everyone gets story time and they sell this journey. Pariah is a strong story because Rees doesn't make the parents typical antagonists who aren't happy with her as a lesbian. We get a sense of their world and can understand their perspective, even if we don't agree with them. We also get a strong sense of the family world and connections to church, not to mention Dad's affair. All of this helps us feel like we understand the family dynamics. Rees and her cinematographer Bradford Young crafted a personal, intimate film. The film is beautiful to look at with many gorgeous closeups. It also has raw energy in the scenes that require it. All told, it's clear right out of the gate that Rees is a filmmaker pushing honesty and truth with her first film in a visually exciting way.
