Jackson, Mississippi residents concerned about new parking meters in Downtown JXN, mayor responds!

JACKSON, Miss. (WLBT) - The City of Jackson installed new parking meters downtown earlier this year. According to Jackson Mayor Chokwe Antar Lumumba, the kiosks are meant to produce revenue for the capital city, but some people are not fans of the new system. “I'm not in favor of the parking industry downtown. I think the city could look at other alternatives for generating revenue,” said Barry Howard, who works downtown. Currently, it costs a dollar an hour to park downtown. You can pay at the meter with coins or a card or from your phone through text or the parking app website. Most visitors used to park downtown for free, but Lumumba says that was never the intention, and this system keeps Jackson in line with other big cities. He believes a dollar isn't asking for much. “We're talking about a dollar. If you go to any city near our size, you're looking at a minimum of $5,” Lumumba said. For some people, the cost is not the main concern. It's the paying process and requirements. Howard said, “I think the whole process is a little confusing, you know, in terms of what you actually do to pay? Is there a meter? What are the penalties for not paying? I don't think the average person quite understands the process.” According to Lumumba, the meters are also meant to be more convenient by allowing you to pay from your phone. However, it's not that simple for everyone. Emily Cross, who works downtown, said, “When you go to try to extend it, it doesn't let you extend it. It says, ‘Oh, you can go to two hours,' but then once you click two hours, it says, ‘Oh, this is not available.' So, you just have to go and do a whole other session.” Paying for parking is common in large cities, and Lumumba wants Jackson residents to understand the benefits the additional revenue could bring to the city. Lumumba said, “When you go to Atlanta, when you go to Houston, if you don't understand the meter, then you find time to figure it out, so you make certain that you don't get a ticket.”

Topics We Discuss:   [3:23] How Emily became interested in death and dying at a comparatively younger age than most in the space. She was always interested in liminal spaces and the metaphysical even as an art student.   [5:30] What being a death doula is like.It often varies outside of the basics, like NDAs. Emily often offers her services on a sliding scale. A lot of the work she does with families is educational. She also loves doing “legacy projects”.   [9:00] Hospice care does not provide emotional support, unlike a death doula. Bringing a death doula in earlier can be more helpful or beneficial than last minute because they are able to see the big picture.    [11:00] Emily's biggest takeaways from sitting with people at the end of life – everything is temporary. She works with some of her clients to create art pieces as they approach the end of their lives.   [13:16] Living funerals – Emily practices these as ceremonies to bring mortality closer to your life and help you refocus and reprioritize your life. It is essentially a death meditation. She considers funerals where the dying individual is in attendance “celebrations of life”.   [16:30] Emily was introduced to this practice during her death doula training, which was started in South Korea as an attempt to help curb the suicide rate there. It was meant to help show people that their lives were worth living. She couldn't find anyone doing this in the United States so she created her own ceremony and practice.   [21:13] Many people have used Emily's living funeral ceremony as the catalyst for radical change in their lives. People have divorced, moved countries, let certain chapters of their lives go, started businesses, and so much more after doing this.**   [23:45] People often feel a sense of peace during the funeral while laying in their coffin. Many have out of body experiences or feel like they're going somewhere they've known before.   [26:30] Emily based her ceremony off of the South Korean rituals she saw. Most of the videos didn't have subtitles so she doesn't know everything that was said, but she just tried to replicate what she saw while also making it her own.  FOLLOW EMILY CROSS: To learn more about Emily and living funerals, visit her website or follow her on Instagram.   Life, Death and the Space Between is brought to you by: Dr. Amy Robbins | Host, Executive Producer PJ Duke | Executive Producer Andrej | Podcastize | Audio & Video Editing Mara Stallins | Outreach & Social Media Strategy Claire | Clairperk.com | Podcast Cover Design

What's going on when we scroll through our social feeds finding momentary happiness in the mishaps of celebrities or politicians whose views we dislike? Or delight in the stupidity of everyday people on 'epic fail' sites? Aleks Krotoski explores whether our digital habits, alongside increasingly polarised attitudes, have ushered in a new age of schadenfreude... and asks if this is always a bad thing? Aleks hears from author Tiffany Watt Smith who suggests that, whilst schadenfreude is not a new emotion, online platorms may create the perfect conditions for it to flourish; Dr Lea Boecker suggests schadenfreude may have an important role in boosting self-esteem and encouraging group cohesion; fail video aficionado Olly Browning confesses the particular frisson of schadenfreude he feels when justice is served; whilst researcher Emily Cross shares the results of her recent experiments measuring levels of schadenfreude felt towards robots; and Dr Sa-Kiera Hudson invites us to consider whether schadenfreude is always a passive emotion or whether its addictive qualities might sometimes lead to harmful behaviours towards marginalised groups. Loma - “Half Silences” from the 2020 album Don’t Shy Away on Sub Pop. Loma never anticipated going this far. The project began as an impromptu collaboration with songwriter Emily Cross, recording engineer Dan Duszynski, and Shearwater’s Jonathan Meiburg, converging to record their 2018 self-titled debut. After releasing the record and touring, each member intended to go back to their own projects. However, it only took a few months away from each other before they realized they wanted to keep Loma going. The trio holed up in Duszynski’s Texas home studio to record their sophomore effort, ‘Don’t Shy Away,’ which was recently released on Sub Pop. “Don’t Shy Away” vindicates the bands decision to keep moving forward. The brooding, slow dirge finds the band at their best. Cross’ voice wields a stark intensity, looming over the restrained but tense instrumentation. It’s a marvel of studio wizardry, with static and eerie distortion and synth drones crashing over the steady pulse of drums and bass. It’s Loma at their best, pushing each other into bold, luminous new sonic territories. This Must Be the Gig is joined by Emily Cross of Cross Record. The experimental project focuses on a powerful fusion of visceral muscle and ephemeral glow—most recently culminating in an incredible self-titled record in 2019. In addition, Emily is one third of the band Loma, alongside Dan Duszynski, and Jonathan Meiburg, and Loma is set to release a new record of their own via Sub Pop. And as if that weren't enough, Emily is also a death doula, someone who assists in the understanding and processing of death, aiming to help individuals and families cope with mortality as a natural part of life. Needless to say, her work in that field under the organization name Steady Waves End of Life Services is particularly pressing and meaningful in the midst of a global pandemic.
