On the NGO-isation of the state. [Patreon Exclusive] Researchers and writers Matthew Thompson and Jonny Gordon-Farleigh join us to discuss their recent Damage article with George Hoare. Civil society was once occupied by popular forces that could function as a bulwark against both capitalist marketization and state authoritarianism. Today, it has been colonized by the NGO, which, in turn, colonizes our hollowed-out politics. We ask: What are 'private NGOs', and what are quangos? How has 'projectification' taken over? What does the NGOisation of society mean? How does this kill public accountability? What are concrete examples of this process? What comes next? Any possibility for resurrecting things like Working Men's Clubs? The spirit of the working class is crushed. So argues Batya Ungar-Sargon in her new book 'Second Class: How the Elites Betrayed America's Working Men and Women'. Batya says that working men and women in the United States have been abandoned by both political parties and left to fend for themselves all while unchecked immigration makes an already challenging job market untenable. As her title suggests, she believes “elites” are causing this problem. And though you hear the word used more often and somewhat scornfully on Fox News, “elites” doesn't just progressives. It's alll of us who are educated, have stable jobs, and aren't worried aobut making rent next month. But just because Batya uses the word doesn't mean her main argument—that unchecked immigration is making life untenable for working Americans—is wrong. At the very least, it is inarguable that immigration is putting a strain on our housing, educational and medical infrastructure. And all of us foot the bill for that. What's really odd about this to me is, despite the fact that Batya defends Donald Trump as a friend of the working people, that the policies she recommends to fix the problem feel like Democratic policies from an earlier time. Unions, tarriffs - that sort of thing. Whichever side they're from, she is passionate about the importance of a thriving middle class for a stable democracy. Batya is The Opinion Editor at Newsweek. She holds a BA from the University of Chicago and earned her PhD at UC, Berkeley. Her writing has appeared in The Washington Post, Los Angeles Times, Foreign Policy, the New York Times, The Daily Beast, and The Free Press. Buy 'Second Class' here. Geoff Norcott examines modern masculinity in this stand-up series for Radio 4, by creating the safe space of a working men's club so he can speak freely about the problems men are facing and how we might go about fixing them in a way that benefits everyone. This week, Geoff looks at men's reluctance to put on sunscreen. Why not take a simple, basic precaution against the hottest and largest thing in the entire solar system? Vanity? Bravado? Or something else? With the help of his studio audience, Geoff looks at whether this is connected to men's reluctance to seek medical advice and their habit of dying early.Written and presented by Geoff NorcottRecorded by Richard BiddulphProduction manager: Sarah Wright Executive producer: Caroline Raphael Producer: Ed MorrishA Pier production for BBC Radio 4
A hundred episodes ago, we had the author of Second Class, Batya Ungar-Sargon, on the show to talk specifically about how America's elites have betrayed the country's working men and women. So when I bumped into her at the recent Braver Angels convention in Wisconsin, we talked more broadly about her identity as an American and how she would like America to reinvent itself in the 21st century. What I admire about Ungar-Sargon is that she is hard to politically categorize, especially in her non Trumpian critique of America's technocratic elites. Batya Ungar-Sargon is an American journalist and author. Ungar-Sargon is the opinion editor of Newsweek[and the former opinion editor of The Forward. She is the author of two books, the most recent of which is Second Class: How the Elites Betrayed America's Working Men and Women, which discusses the challenges faced by the American working class and the gap between them and the elite class.Named as one of the "100 most connected men" by GQ magazine, Andrew Keen is amongst the world's best known broadcasters and commentators. In addition to presenting KEEN ON, he is the host of the long-running How To Fix Democracy show. He is also the author of four prescient books about digital technology: CULT OF THE AMATEUR, DIGITAL VERTIGO, THE INTERNET IS NOT THE ANSWER and HOW TO FIX THE FUTURE. Andrew lives in San Francisco, is married to Cassandra Knight, Google's VP of Litigation & Discovery, and has two grown children. This is a public episode. Matt starts the series Voices of the Working Men and Women in America as he welcomes Curtis from Idaho to the program. Sean Davis talks about the activated cells that are in play in America. It's an election year in the United States. And so far, the media's focus has not been on working people and what policies they want to see from their leadership. But our guest on today's program has travelled across America interviewing working class voters — and she shares her insights on what the media is missing. Batya Ungar-Sargon is the opinion editor of Newsweek. Her latest book is Second Class: How the Elites Betrayed America's Working Men and Women. The audiobook is out this month. Batya Ungar-Sargon returns to the show, in an episode recorded in April. You can find Tara Henley on Twitter at @TaraRHenley, and on Substack at tarahenley.substack.com
What You Need to Know is both major U.S. political parties are gearing up for the national conventions where they will draft and adopt a new party platform. The Democrat and Republican party have diverged from each other over the past few decades. In contrast to the Republican party, the Democrat party will adopt many radical planks to their platform because of the radical factions within, but when it comes to upholding those issues the Democratic party ignores their platform because it isn't why their voters vote for them. Jared Klickstein, author of the book, Crooked Smile: What It Took to Escape a Decade of Homelessness, Addiction, & Crime, joins Ed to talk about his experiences he had during his days of addiction and homelessness. Jared points out that we are going at this issue in the wrong way and policies have only encouraged people to continue their ways. Fentanyl, according to Jared, is heroin on steroids and it has completely replaced it on the streets. Jared now helps people that were in his same situation in various recovery programs, and the shared experience helps him connect with these people to put them on the track of sobriety. Bayta Ungar-Sargon, Opinion Editor at Newsweek and author of Bad News: How Woke Media Is Undermining Democracy and Second Class: How the Elites Betrayed America's Working Men and Women, talks about her two books! THe Media has completely silenced one side of society so they can push woke ideologies. The elites have sold out working class citizens of America! The left's perfect world would have 80% of people who aren't considered “wealthy” living off of government welfare. Democrats used to be the party of the working class, but they've nearly lost the demographic entirely. The Trump “protectionist” economy is what we need to protect the dignity and hard work of middle class working class citizens. Wrap Up: We the People must VOTE. Registering people to vote is each individual's duty during this election because you can't Make America Great Again without enough votes to make it too big to rig. She and Bridget discuss the shift in political parties' attitudes towards the working class, Trump's appeal to blue-collar voters, the impact of education on social and economic status, how Hollywood portrays working-class life, and the concept of "woke" ideology as a smokescreen for economic inequality. They also cover immigration, why the current class divide is more significant than racial or political divisions, the shrinking middle class, how politicians and elites speak to crowds that are made up of people of color, and the abandonment of the working class by both major political parties and the cultural elite.Sponsor Links:The Campaign ManagersPlutoTVCheck your media bias. Long-held notions of the role of government, trade and economic policy, foreign policy and immigration are being challenged by populist thinkers and movements. They argue that the government has been captured by an elite, college-educated class, and their policies benefit a privileged few while ignoring the needs of the middle and working class. Populist's critics argue that the rising tide in anti-establishment thinking ignores the incredible progress in health care, education, and tech that has been realized under the governance of these intellectual elites. Populist anger, they warn, represents a grave threat to western democracy and the trusted institutions that paved the post-war path to peace and prosperity. Arguing in favour of the resolution is Batya Ungar-Sargon, opinion editor of Newsweek and author of the new book Second Class: How the Elites Betrayed America's Working Men and Women. Arguing against the resolution is Joel Stein, journalist and author of In Defense of Elites. Stigall hopes you're not eating listening to this one today. The theme of today's show largely centers around entertainers and comedians who used to be the standard bearers for telling truths, or at a bare minimum challenging those in authority. Never kissing up to powerful interests. That's all changed, and the man once considered the most edgy personality in all of broadcasting just handed over his show Friday in what has to be the most sickening display of sycophantic behavior ever recorded. Jerry Seinfeld and Bill Maher - in a total coincidence - lay into this same theme over the weekend in unrelated clips. Plus, Batya Ungar-Sargon - opinion editor at Newsweek and Democrat - doesn't hold back on her party bailing on her core values as a voter in her new book "Second Class: How the Elites Betrayed America's Working Men and Women."-For more info visit the official website: https://chrisstigall.comInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/chrisstigallshow/Twitter: https://twitter.com/ChrisStigallFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/chris.stigall/Listen on Spotify: https://tinyurl.com/StigallPodListen on Apple Podcasts: https://bit.ly/StigallShowSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
“The media really gave the liberal and leftist elites a language with which to pretend that they are the crusaders on the side of the good, when actually they themselves are the villains in this story in a big way. And that language is wokeness.”Batya Ungar-Sargon says she used to suffer from what's been called “Trump Derangement Syndrome.” But after speaking to people outside of her political bubble, she now believes he's actually a centrist candidate.“Any time you turn on cable news, you will hear liberals casting him as a unique threat to democracy, when he is really the opposite of that. He's the sort-of apotheosis of a democratic system that will not allow the billions of dollars spent trying to stop him to get in the way of the will of the people,” she says.Ms. Ungar-Sargon recently traveled the country, speaking to everyday Americans about how they perceive the political, economic, and cultural climate. She compiled her findings in a book: “Second Class: How the Elites Betrayed America's Working Men and Women.”“The most shocking thing I found was that the American Dream for working-class people is much more alive and well and healthy in red states than it is in blue states,” says Ms. Ungar-Sargon.We discuss how, according to her, the democratic party betrayed middle-class Americans by creating a knowledge industry consisting of credentialed elites who benefit economically from illegal immigration and trade liberalization.“I think much of the Democratic policy today is part and parcel of this upward transfer of wealth, whether it's student-loan forgiveness, whether it was the lockdown policies, whether it's the open border, whether it's the climate agenda and the Green New Deal, Defund the Police—all of this stuff is about the fumes, the virtuous fumes that the over-credentialed elites create out of their ideology. And they always demand that the working class pays for it,” says Ms. Ungar-Sargon.Views expressed in this video are opinions of the host and the guest, and do not necessarily reflect the views of The Epoch Times.

Today we dive into a subject that's been getting quite a bit of attention lately on the national stage, but its something that's been discussed in cities like Philadelphia for years prior. Someone breaks into your property, stays there, maybe even changes the locks - and when you call police - you're told they can't help. Mark Miller, senior attorney at Pacific Legal Foundation unpacks what legally is and isn't "squatter's rights." More are warming up to Stigall's question about abortion on the ballot in Florida and what that means. Batya Ungar-Sargon - option editor at Newsweek says working class voters are bailing on Democrats in huge ways and distractions like the war in Gaza and abortion won't work for them this time. But her new book "Second Class: How the Elites Betrayed America's Working Men and Women." Plus, whatever you do - stop using the word obese. There's a new, better term. And, are you at all excited about the coming solar eclipse? Apparently some prisoners in New York are. -For more info visit the official website: https://chrisstigall.comInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/chrisstigallshow/Twitter: https://twitter.com/ChrisStigallFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/chris.stigall/Listen on Spotify: https://tinyurl.com/StigallPodListen on Apple Podcasts: https://bit.ly/StigallShowSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
In today's episode, Ann interviews author and deputy Newsweek editor Batya Ungar-Sargon. Batya first shares her perspective on rising anti-semitism across the globe and the media's lack of integrity to hold Hamas responsible for their horrific attacks. Then, we briefly discuss her new book: “Second Class, How the Elites Betrayed America's Working Men and Women”. First and foremost, the establishment wants the world to forget about the terrorist attacks that occurred on October 7th, but we refuse to let that happen. This is why we are coming out with October 7, a new verbatim play consisting entirely of eyewitness accounts of the Oct 7 massacres in Israel. It is a must-see and you can buy tickets, or donate here: www.october7theplay.com. We're going to film the play and release it online. We're also going to take this play to Harvard and other elite, woke universities that desperately need to learn the truth. This is one of the biggest projects we've ever done, so we ask you to share the story with everyone that you know and donate what you can. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/ap-scoop/message
On Election Night 2016, many of us thought we knew who would be the next president of the United States. We were blindsided when Hillary Clinton lost to Donald Trump. Legacy media quickly scrambled to explain what had happened. They ultimately arrived at an explanation: Trump's voters were racist, xenophobic conspiracy theorists, and possibly even proto-fascists. That wasn't quite right. My guest today, Newsweek opinion editor Batya Ungar-Sargon, has been on a journey for the past eight years to understand how Trump won the White House in 2016 and how the left fundamentally misunderstood the American working class. She eventually came to the conclusion that the most salient feature of American life is not our political divide. It's “the class divide that separates the college-educated from the working class.” Democrats have historically been the party of the working class. But for the better part of the past decade, Democrats have seen their support among working-class voters tumble. Policy wonks and demographic experts kept saying just wait: the future of the Democratic party is a multiethnic, multiracial, working-class coalition. But that didn't pan out. Instead, in 2016, Trump carried 54 percent of voters with family incomes of $30,000 to $50,000; 44 percent of voters with family incomes under $50,000; and nearly 40 percent of union workers voted for Trump—the highest for a Republican presidential candidate since Ronald Reagan in 1984. Meanwhile, in 2022, Democrats had a 15-point deficit among working-class voters but a 14-point advantage among college-educated voters. In order to understand how and why this happened, Batya decided to spend the last year traveling the country talking to working-class Americans. Who are they? Do they still have a fair shot at the American dream? What do they think about their chances to secure the hallmarks of a middle-class life? She collected these stories in her new book: Second Class: How the Elites Betrayed America's Working Men and Women. What she found is that for many of them, the American dream felt dead. Today, Batya discusses who really represents the working class; why she thinks America has broken its contract with the working class; how we reinstate our commitment to them; and what will happen in 2024 if we don't. On Wednesday's Mark Levin Show, Joe Lieberman has died at 82 after suffering complications from a fall in NYC. He was one of the last true Democrat moderates. The likes of AOC and Bernie Sanders were too much for him and he took a stance against them. He was one of the few who spoke out against fellow Democrats. Very few Democrats had the guts to speak out against Sen Chuck Schumer's horrific speech against Israel – but Lieberman did. Lieberman loved his party, but he loved America more. Also, In the last 7-days, Biden and his propagandists have claimed that Donald Trump wants to eliminate health care, Social Security, Medicare, and abortion. Has there ever been a bigger serial liar running for president than Biden? Nobody is eliminating health care; Trump has defended Social Security and Medicare his entire life and Biden demanded they be slashed as well as VA benefits multiple times as a senator; Trump, and no president, can eliminate abortion even if he/they wanted to as it is now a state matter (Trump has never supported eliminating the practice in all cases while Biden supports it including partial birth abortion). Biden must be defeated and resoundingly. Afterward, Jon Stewart is caught red-handed being a hypocrite and makes a dumb argument on X. Of course, the law should be applied equally. So, Letitia James should investigate him, his taxes, and his sale and apply the same law she dusted off against Trump. Later, Batya Ungar-Sargon calls in to discuss her new book, Second Class: How the Elites Betrayed America's Working Men and Women. https://www.amazon.com/Second-Class-Betrayed-Americas-Working/dp/1641773618 Finally, John Eastman calls in to discuss the recommendation of disbarment from a California judge – all for giving Trump advice in 2020.
