"Mountain View has a very Mayberry feel to it. So, it’s just kind of like, it likens back to like a more innocent time, you know, when, maybe before TV, when people just, the only entertainment they had was to play their music on their front porch or something like that. And so, it hearkens a real innocence in the town. I really would just love that kind of family atmosphere." "If I was honestly speaking, I would say most of Arkansas would be an outdoorsy kind of place." In this episode, I’m going to be talking with born and raised local, Micah Idler, about how to make the most of an outdoorsy trip in Delaware. And more specifically, we’ll be exploring a few of Delaware’s east coast towns, including Lewes, Rehoboth Beach, and Dewey Beach. Join Micah and me as we explore what else there is to do, beyond the beaches in Lewes, Rehoboth Beach, and Dewey Beach, Delaware!   Take an LA Tour with Micah or Connect with Micah on Instagram Micah is a world-traveling storyteller who’s currently a professional tour guide in Los Angeles. Micah went to school for history and education, studying geography, political science, and architecture. He loves meeting new people and showing them around his favorite spots, whether they are out in the wild or at the bar.   What We Cover in This Episode The best time of year to visit Delaware.  The main difference between a Delaware beach vacation and a Maryland beach vacation. The different vibes between the Delaware beaches. A dining spot you must hit up on the way if you’re driving in from D.C. or Baltimore. The best outdoor activities to take part in, outside of the beach. The best breakfast, lunch, dinner, and drinks on the east coast of Delaware.  One fun tip that’ll get you a free donut! Delaware weather tips. The best spot to catch crabs. Which spots, of all the competitors, have the best french fry and ice cream. Two of the most beautiful places for pictures. A terrific historical spot to visit that many visitors miss! The most overrated destination on the east coast of Delaware.   Quotes I think the best option is really getting a group of friends or your family out and just sharing a house together and just creating a bond through activities, great food, whether indoors or out. Micah Idler I think it’s more about quality in Delaware. Even if it does get busy, which it does, I feel like it’s still a local kind of vibe to it. And I think that Delaware has done a good job of kind of preserving that. Micah Idler I feel like there’s so much I still didn’t talk about. But that’s the thing is that I just love Delaware and the beaches so much that it’s always home, even if I don’t live there at the moment. So I highly recommend people checking it out and that they can actually experience it for themselves. We can't seem to talk about gambling without reference to its very real, very serious social problems -- whether it's the association with organized crime, the addictiveness, or the ruination of many people's lives. But what if we look at gambling through the lens of everyday life? Where does it come from, what does it say about us, and how should we manage it in our society? Ben is in Edmonton to chat with University of Alberta gambling expert Fiona Nicoll. About the Guest My greatest strength as a researcher is the creation of interdisciplinary conversations about some of the most challenging political issues of our time, from cultural genocide and reconciliation to gambling policy, white nationalist movements and the challenges facing the neoliberal university. I apply this research expertise to facilitate public art and other knowledge transfer projects. In addition to producing a body of art writing for books and catalogues, I have curated, managed and produced media (including websites and film) related to whiteness, reconciliation and Indigenous sovereignties. In 2002 I curated a social history exhibition for the Liverpool Regional Museum on the life of Aunty Nance DeVries, a survivor of the ‘stolen generations’ of Aboriginal children and speaker to the New South Wales Parliament on the occasion of the Government’s apology in 1997. Working with veteran documentary photographer, Mervyn Bishop and videographer, Sandra Peel, I drew upon and exhibited extracts from a large archive of documents about Nancy’s ‘case’, from her birth up to the age of eighteen when she was released from institutions of state care. Titled Ten Hours in a Lifetime (a reference to the time spent with her biological mother), this exhibition was the most popular in the museum’s history, with thousands of school children attending tours while it was on site, before later travelling to the New South Wales Parliament House. In 2014-2015 I delivered a major project for the University of Queensland titled Courting Blakness: Recalibrating Knowledge in the Sandstone University. This project centred on the Great Court as the symbolic and material heart of the University of Queensland. Reflecting the University’s heritage, traditions and prestige, this gathering place and thoroughfare is also a space where images of Aboriginal people prior to, during and after the colonization of Australia are carved in sculptural reliefs. Curated by Fiona Foley, Courting Blakness entered a creative visual dialogue with these carvings. Works by eight Aboriginal artists (Archie Moore, Ryan Presley, r e a, Natalie Harkin, Megan Cope and Michael Cook, Christian Thompson and Karla Dickens) made the Great Court a unique staging platform for discussions about the relationship between Indigenous people and the University; the edited collection of essays published by UQP provides a permanent record of these discussions. While on site, it reached over 25,000 people, including 800 students across fourteen different courses through disciplinary specific frameworks of discussion and assessment tasks. It delivered staff training through public seminars and two university-wide ‘Diversity Discussions’ and provided over 1,000 hours of volunteer activity. The website attracted over 3031 unique users and was a valuable teaching, learning and research resource for the exhibition. It now forms a digital archive for future research on public art and universities. As convenor of the 2017-2018 Political Science Department Speakers’ series, I brought scholars to campus to reflect on some of the most difficult questions raised by the Canadian Truth and Reconciliation Commission. Speakers included Glen Coulthard, Audra Simpson, Jaskiran Dhillon, Robert Nichols, Jeremy Schmidt and Aileen Moreton-Robinson. I am currently producing a short film titled Afterlives of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission: What Comes Next? Directed by award winning Métis film-maker, Conor McNally, it will feature provocative research presentations by Indigenous and non-Indigenous academics and interviews with leaders of Prairie Aboriginal communities. The film will be used in classrooms and boardrooms to educate non-Indigenous people about the meaning and ramifications of ‘cultural genocide’ and current aspirations to national reconciliation. Mentioned in this Episode Where the Action Is: Three Essays by Erving Goffman On Liberty by John Stuart Mill Beyond Freedom and Dignity by BF Skinner The Reality Bubble: Blind Spots, Hidden Truths, and the Dangerous Illusions that Shape Our World by Ziya Tong Yuval Noah Harari, popular historian Anzac Day No Logo: No Space, No Choice, No Jobs by Naomi Klein Governmentality, concept invented by French philosopher Michel Foucault The Quote of the Week "Gambling is a principle inherent in human nature." - Edmund Burke (1729-1797)

Cindy Kennedy In this Lyme disease podcast episode, I interview Cindy Kennedy ( www.pursuewellness.us ). Cindy is a Nurse Practitioner who worked in women’s health for over 20 years.  She practiced gynecology and has cared for thousands of patients. Unbeknownst to her, she contracted Lyme disease.  She never saw a tick, or a bullseye rash. Her symptoms were subtle at first, and then in 2011 her disease struck with vengeance.  Even as a knowledgeable health care professional, the struggles to find a cause became overwhelming.   In general, she discovered that health care professionals are not adequately trained to recognize and treat Lyme disease and its co-infections.  She came to feel the same sinking feeling that other Lyme sufferers must bear; the endless walk down the frightening path of misdiagnosis, shattered hope, and disappointment. Resources for learning were not very credible. As her health improved she became passionate about providing education and guidance for those seeking information about Lyme disease, health and healing. All this has led to the development of her popular Lyme disease podcast series, Living With Lyme (www.livingwithlyme.us ) and her private practice, Pursue Wellness. It’s Valentine’s Day week and we thought it was about time for us to share our love story with you. Isn’t it crazy that it took us 31 episodes to share this story? In this episode, we share how Billy Moyer and Ashley Alaniz met, fell in love, got engaged and became Bashley! You get to hear who was smitten with the other first, how we split the cost of our first date, got engaged after dating for 6 months and had one epic wedding. Music “Sunny” by Bensound.com. What We Talked About in this Episode: Where we were in our lives before we met in April 2010 Billy was almost two years out of college and working to build his business. After trying a bit too hard in past relationships he had decided to focus on work. Ashley was almost a year out of college and had just started her first job. She was still in college mode doing some partying and was living with her parents. A new work friend of Ashley and Billy’s best friend introduced us. Our first date - We went to a restaurant in downtown Fort Worth, Texas where Billy paid and a Comedy Club where Ashley paid. Billy finally went in for a kiss at the door dropping Ashley at home after chickening out many times before Ashley told her friends that night that she was going to marry Billy It took Billy a little longer to know the relationship was for real, but when he did he started looking at rings. This was in July only 6 weeks after our first date We got engaged on November 6, 2010. It happened on a picnic at TCU where Ashley went to college. Billy had a surprise for her which she finally opened. It was a big box and inside was a football that asked her to marry him. Billy got down on one knee and after about 5 seconds that felt like an hour Ashley, said yes. We became Bashley on November 5, 2011. We got married in Saint Mary Cathedral in downtown Austin. Our reception was a ton of fun and it included a Piano Bar!

What We Talked about in this Episode: Where our passion for service comes from For Ashley, volunteer and philanthropy weren't words that were used regularly by her parents but everything was about gratitude Thank you cards for the holidays were written on Christmas Day Her parents helped her understand that there are people who are less fortunate Excess wasn’t a thing, toys & games that were still very loved would be donated In high school, volunteering was a way to get out of the house but she slowly learned in importance For Billy, service was important at an early age came from his mother’s work as a social worker He would work at senior centers with her or deliver Meals on Wheels with parents His Catholic education plays a role in this because the faith is rooted in social justice What issues we are most passionate about We don’t volunteer to just volunteer, we want to make an impact Education & learning is at the center of many of our commitments We love seeing others grow and develop into leaders How service continues to be a way we come together How service initially brought us together How we know when the other person’s skill set is more needed for each of our commitments Our desire to serve on a board together How you should always gain something some service You should be gaining a new relationship, a new perspective, or a positive feeling How we have learned to lean in to leadership roles The key for both of us has been to identifying gaps and filling them Simply showing up shows commitment Being out in the community and understanding other people’s problems
