Archie Moore: kith and kin / Australian Pavilion at Venice Art Biennale 2024. April 19, 2024.Official description: First Nations peoples ...
In this episode of Icelandic Art Center's Out there podcast we spoke to the curator Heiðar Kári Rannversson who has been keeping busy with a few exhibitions recently opened locally in Iceland. We discuss the exhibition spring that has sprung in Iceland with a couple of exciting solo exhibitions having opened in Kling & Bang; Andri Björgvinsson and Tara & Silla and the National Gallery; Anna Rún Tryggvadóttir, Þóra Sigurðardóttir and the new iteration of Steina Vasulka's Borealis Installation from 1993 now on display. Heiðar Kári @hkrannversson is an independent curator, art historian and most recently he held a position at the Nordatlantens Brygge in Kobenhavn 2018 - 2022. He has curated multiple shows across Iceland; The Living Art Museum, the National Gallery and for the Icelandic Art Center. In the episode his most recent exhibitions and projects were discussed including: Sóley Ragnarsdóttir @soleygendary is a Danish/Icelandic artist that lives and works in Thy, Denmark. Ragnarsdóttir has a sculptural approach to painting, and her works, painted and ornamented with both synthetic and organic materials, hover between figuration and abstraction. She mixes acrylic and epoxy with shells, amber and sea-sanded shards of glass on surfaces of wood, canvas and napkins. Her solo exhibition “Queen of Hearts” curated by HK is now on display at Gerðarsafn. Þór Vigfússon @arslonga_djupivogur is an artist that lives and works in Iceland. He creates powerful objects with colour, texture, and reflection using prefabricated industrial materials. His deceptively simple works, primarily made of glass, plexiglass, mirrors, and Formica with monotone colour fields, push the boundaries between two- and three-dimensional works. Architecture and space play a vital role in their presentation. His solo exhibition “Numbers, Places” curated by HK is now on display at Gerðarsafn. Outside Looking In, Inside Looking Out is an exhibition that has been traveling around the world and will continue in the coming year with the stopa in Tokyo, Oslo and Paris this Autumn. The exhibition showcases works by established and emerging artists from Iceland. This exhibition project is a collaborative platform between the Icelandic Art Center, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs & Business Iceland, promoting visual art from Iceland abroad. This episode ends with the exhibition of the month segment which is dedicated to the one and only Venice Biennale and its 60th international art exhibition curated by Adriano Pedrosa. Special mentions from the main exhibition include Ahmed Umar's work “Talitin, The Third” (2023) and the Mataaho Collective's installation “Takapau” (2024). For the national pavilions Becky and Tinna briefly discussed the following; Pakui Hardware at the Lithuanian Pavilion, Eimear Walshe's installation at Ireland at Venice, the Nigerian Pavilion with a star-studded artist roaster, Canadian Pavilion's exhibition with Kapwani Kiwanga's installation, Archie Moore's installation at the Australian Pavilion curated by Ellie Buttrose and more! Listen in for a quick review of the cacophony at the Biennale. // Created and produced by the Icelandic Art Center, Out There brings co-hosts Becky Forsythe @beforsythe and Þórhildur Tinna Sigurðardóttir @tindilfaetta in conversation with artists, curators and art professionals at the bokasamlagid.

EXPRESS EDITION. Archie Moore's kith and kin has opened at the Venice Biennale. Curated by Ellie Buttrose, the work reflects on the nature and strength of First Nations Australian kinship that spans more than 65,000 years, and incorporates the land, water and all living things. Drawing on Archie's Kamilaroi, Bigambul, British and Scottish heritage, the installation embodies his enduring exploration of history and identity, which are central themes in his artistic practice spanning over 30 years. This episode features comments from the launch, as well as insights from the artist and the curator, along with Creative Australia's Franchesca Cubillo, and Aboriginal elder, writer and arts elder statesman Djon Mundine OAM speaking about the impact of First Nations' art presented at the Venice Biennale. 12-9-2023 Passed Ball Show. John spends this program laughing at the baseball writers for their meltdowns over their attempt to cover the free agency of Shohei Ohtani. John breaks down the simplicity of what the writers are trying to do (be the first to report it). Is it really important? And John thinks it would be even more hilarious if Ohtani decided to return to play professional baseball in Japan. John brings up the first round of the MLB draft of 2014 and the NBA draft of 2020 and points out the similarity before spending a couple of minutes talking about the NBA In Season Tournament- why it is good for the sport and when teams should start putting up banners (if at all). During today's #savingsportshistory segment, John talks about the National League (Baseball) prohibiting uniform numbers, the Heisman Trophy, the All American Football Conference and the Cleveland Browns, Frank Robinson, Old Hoss Radbourn, Dick Butkus, Kurt Angle, the fact that Rube Foster and Branch Rickey were equal baseball pioneers, Archie Moore, Al Unser, and Demaryius Thomas.

This week, we cover our Top 5 Long Titled Songs. How long is long, you ask? Well, we asked last week's Third Lad, Archie Moore from Velocity Girl, to tell us how long is long...to which he replied NINE words or more, and to which he is probably laughing himself into convulsions thinking about how much we struggled with the topic. So, we say #ThanksArchie. Joining us in this very difficult task is Lance Carmine, a long time O3L listener, friend of the show, the podcast's very own Cousin Brucie/Stu Sutcliffe, radio veteran, and possessor of great musical taste and hair. We have an absolutely uproarious time chatting about alternative music, 8-tracks, the state of radio, global warming, Yuma, Eddie Vedder, Bobby McFerrin, K-Pop, and playing the latest world famous O3L game, Name That Long Title! Yes, it's the "S-word." Shoegaze...of all the media fabricated sub-genres that we talk about on O3L, this is one of the most polarizing. The term was coined with some derision about the crop of artists that came up in the late '80s/early '90s who spent much of their stage time looking down at their effects pedals. Even many of the bands who are most closely associated with the term rebuke the label. On the other hand, the word conjures up a glorious, beloved sound that continues to resonate with musicians and fans to this day: walls of woozy, beautifully sculpted guitar noise, drowned out but ethereal vocals, dreamy, insistent beats, all bathed in swathes of reverb and echo. The Extended Play (EP) was a format that was well suited for this music, so that's our focus on this episode. While we may associate the heyday of shoegaze with the amazing groups that burst onto the UK scene, its influence spread across the pond. Case in point is our Third Lad this week, guitarist Archie Moore, who spent the first part of the '90s simultaneously in THREE seminal Washington, D.C. area bands who took cues from fizzy UK indie - Black Tambourine, Lilys, and Velocity Girl. If that wasn't enough, Archie and his friends also co-founded one of the legendary American indie labels, Slumberland Records. Velocity Girl was the stuff that '90s indie pop dreams are made of: Named after one of the coolest songs, fronted by the impossibly cool Sarah Shannon, recording for one of the coolest labels (Sub Pop), staples of alternative radio and MTV's 120 Minutes with hits like "My Forgotten Favorite" (also prominently featured on the Clueless soundtrack), "Crazy Town," "Sorry Again," and "I Can't Stop Smiling." We caught up with Archie the day after Velocity Girl's first gig in 21 years at the anniversary bash for legendary D.C. club The Black Cat. They also will be playing the Bowery Ballroom in New York on September 30th before returning to The Black Cat on December 1st. Catch them if you can! Songs: Brett Vargo - 'Didn't Know I Needed This (Until I Needed This)' Velocity Girl - 'My Forgotten Favorite' Black Tambourine - 'Throw Aggi Off The Bridge' Proud members of the Pantheon Podcasts family. Last night I attended the Poway City Council meeting. I have lots to talk about including Poway banning homeless encampments, the replacement of Barry Leonard, money in politics, and Life Time Fitness at The Farm. Plus, we discuss Archie Moore, San Diego Roads, Steve Garvey for CA Senate, Ed Franklin, and more. We will take your comments and questions in the San Diego Community Forum. It's Wednesday June 7, 2023. Here's what John Riley thinks: Poway City Council Observations I hadn't been to a city council meeting in a while. It was great hearing some of the issues hashed out by both public speakers and elected officials. As a podcaster, it was special meeting some folks that listen or watch my show. Nice to make those human connections. Poway chooses to replace Barry Leonard with an Appointment/Election Hybrid Poway has a history of appointing people to council to fill out a person's term. I figured this was the route they would take in replacing resigning councilmember Barry Leonard. The public was overwhelmingly for an election. Steve Vaus proposed a hybrid model. They will appoint someone with a pledge they will not run in the November 2024 election. Money in Poway Politics California's new SB1439 bill requires that elected officials recuse themselves from voting on issues that involve a donor that gave over $250. But $250 is the campaign donation limit for Poway. Does that mean SB1439 is moot in Poway? Or do indirect funds to PACs and non-profits count too? Life Time Fitness Update at The Farm in Poway The Poway City Council says they cannot do anything since there is no formal proposal before them. That's true. But locals know the developer's plan is to put in a Life Time Fitness center that likely violates the voter's will with Measure P. Mayor Vaus says there is a lot of misinformation swirling in social media. Is JRP part of the problem? LOL Poway Bans Homeless Encampments San Diego implemented a rule that authorities can remove homeless encampments if there is a shelter bed nearby. Now Poway has enacted a similar rule. After all, the San Diego homeless could end up in Poway. Archie Moore, Any Body Can Youth Foundation What a great fundraiser hosted by the ABC Youth Foundation for troubled youth. I attended a very well run and safe youth boxing match at St. Augustine High School. Bravo to the athletes, families and organizers that made this event possible. San Diego Finally Repairing Roads in Rancho Bernardo, Westwood The Witch Creek Fire was in 2007 but the damage to the roads has still not been resolved. The reconstruction has been over for some time, but then authorities had trouble coming up with the $5M to fund this project in the Westwood community of Rancho Bernardo. Why is it so hard to get local government officials to focus on their primary tasks? Steve Garvey for CA Senate? Former Dodger and Padre, Steve Garvey, is flirting with the idea of running for US Senate as a Republican. After his career ended in 1987, he considered running for senate, but his flirting with extramarital affairs derailed his political future. These days that's no longer a disqualifier. Ed Franklin Livestream Podcast, Tuesday June 13th at 7pm Join Ed and I as we discuss podcasting and a wide range of other topics. We'll take your questions and comments in the livestream. San Diego Community Forum We discuss San Diego roads, Cox Cable, cutting the cord, Carlsbad Gay Pride Flag, Highway 56, mass transit, electric vehicles, Poway politics and Rickey Henderson. For episode 12, Brian had the opportunity to speak to Christopher Porter, the primary creative force behind indie pop act Veronica Lake and co-founder of Audrey's Diary. Founded in metro Detroit in the early 90s, Audrey's Diary had a very brief run of 6 releases, each holding a place in the pantheon of American independent, space and dream pop. For those of you wondering about the importance of Audrey's Diary on today's music, 2 tracks released by the Audrey's Diary were featured on the epic Southeast of Saturn compilation released on Third Man Records in 2020. As an art project, Audrey's Diary has had an influence on independent music in a far more reaching way than Christopher is willing to admit.Featuring the likes Black Tambourine (Pam Berry, Archie Moore and Brian Nelson of Velocity Girl and Mike Schulman of Slumberland Records), this supergroup of sorts kicked off the label with the classic “Throw Aggi From The Bridge”. Brian and Christopher, now a journalist and writer, step through each of the Audrey's Diary releases exploring them in great detail. The final release was a fanzine, Emily's #777, an ode to the likes of Sarah Records featuring a 7” with music by Bark Psychosis, Jessamine and Buddah on the Moon.If you have never heard any of the Audrey's Diary releases or are just curious about this important independent American indie label, this interview is a treat. For fans of the label, this episode is somewhat of a love letter to those who loved the work of Christopher and Audrey's Diary. A key theme of this interview was best put by Christopher when he said “never stop making music with your friends”.

Over that time he has trained in a wide range of martial arts working initially in professional performance and then extensively in self-protection. He is a huge advocate of martial arts cross training, working a lot in combat sports, especially modern MMA, but - being an avid historian - has always maintained respect for the traditional arts. He has instructorships in multiple disciplines and created his own approach to martial arts and self-protection, Clubb Chimera Martial Arts. These days he is known for his writing, his cross-training approach, his realistic teaching children's self-protection and his strong advocacy of critical thinking as a learning tool.
