Today's poem is a master-class in snappy putdowns and the value of a fiercely-loyal and equally witty friend.Joseph Hilaire Pierre René Belloc (1870 – 1953) was a Franco-English writer and historian of the early 20th century. Belloc was also an orator, poet, sailor, satirist, writer of letters, soldier, and political activist. His Catholic faith had a strong effect on his works.Belloc became a naturalised British subject in 1902 while retaining his French citizenship. While attending Oxford University, he served as President of the Oxford Union. From 1906 to 1910, he served as one of the few openly Catholic members of the British Parliament.Belloc was a noted disputant, with a number of long-running feuds. He was also a close friend and collaborator of G. K. Chesterton. George Bernard Shaw, a friend and frequent debate opponent of both Belloc and Chesterton, dubbed the pair the "Chesterbelloc".Belloc's writings encompassed religious poetry and comic verse for children. His widely sold Cautionary Tales for Children included "Jim, who ran away from his nurse, and was eaten by a lion" and "Matilda, who told lies and was burned to death". He wrote historical biographies and numerous travel works, including The Path to Rome (1902). Get full access to The Daily Poem Podcast at dailypoempod.substack.com/subscribe

Giancarlo Bernini is a Catholic magician. You read that right - my dude is both Catholic AND does magic shows for a living. I got to see him perform in Dallas back in December then again in February in Colorado. The guy is no joke. He's been featured on Penn and Teller's hit tv show Fool Us and has performed in stadiums and venues across the country. Using the art of illusion, Giancarlo shares a unique perspective on faith and what it means to seek Truth. His Catholic faith, BA in Religious Studies, and love of apologetics have allowed him to create a program tailored to Catholic audiences. We had a great conversation around random things like "What does the day to day life of a full time magician look like" to the importance of excellence in your profession when it comes to evangelization. Dr. Charles Conniry (aka "Chuck") is the president of Western Seminary. He has spent decades in Christian higher education. He's pastored, authored, and preached. His Curriculum Vitae (think big resume) is the size of a college essay. He's also connected to almost every well known Christian scholar in America. Before all that, Chuck was a young adult playing in a garage band and smoking a lot of weed. His Catholic school upbringing taught him a lot about God, but Chuck had never yielded to his power or grace. This is the story of how God used a Ouija board, a joint, and piano lessons to set Chuck free from the power of Satan.Chuck on WesternSeminary.eduChuck's Curriculum VitaeChad Harms on InstagramDonate to the Show
Welcone to Embers and Wind!“And he grew up in poverty without a father and started working at age 14 so he taught us the value of hard work.... and to appreciate people. He's very caring. His Catholic background is very important to him. And I worked for him in a couple of his different businesses throughout the years. And one thing he always taught me was 'When you hand out that paycheck, you thank the employee.' And so when I'm working with people, I always like to thank them. 'I don't care if they messed up big time at the end of the night. I want you to thank them because you're not in business without those people.' And so I use kind of that same theory with the participants. I always thank them for being there at the end of the day. And that I look forward to seeing them in the morning, So that's really the biggest coach of my life and to this day." Special guest Bartholomew County Work's coach Dawn Bieberle shares in describing her father. I'm your host, Keith Weedman. In each podcast episode, you will hear stories. These stories will feel like a tender wind blowing on the embers of service that glow within you. In this weekly show, you will learn ideas, kindling for your embers. It will be your choice to utilize the gentle wind to ignite the kindling. In this episode, Dawn defines what she means by lighting a spark in others. It includes doing whatever it takes to help participants overcome barriers. She shares her story how she enrolled in BCW in her 50s after earning her college degree, then applying for 76 jobs, having 12 job interviews and no job offers. Longstanding BCW volunteer Harriett Armstrong, Purdue referred Dawn to BCW. She enrolled to build her job interviewing skills because she had never interviewed for a job before getting her degree. Then she shares how her former BCW coach encouraged her to apply for BCW coach when her former coach retired. Dawn shares her current role fulfills her personal vision. She shares that the program begins with 32 hours of classroom training which includes mock interviews. She relies heavily upon community volunteers whom she calls community partners to present on topics that include healthy eating, legal issues, empowerment and how to deal with stress. She stresses how much participants benefit from their mock job interviews and the feedback they receive to build their interview skills. She notes how participants build confidence throughout the week and is humbled by the positive feedback participants provide her at the end of the week and beyond. She feels warm inside knowing she made a difference. She shares two stories to illustrate how much participants are helped by BCW. She appreciates Yes Cinema and Sans Souci for providing work experience to build job skills for those who need work experience and positive work habits. She shares that after the workshop, she maintains weekly contact until they land their job. Then she stays in touch through text messages and Facebook Messenger. To learn more about the Bartholomew County Works, their Facebook page is the website listed for this episode. To email Dawn, her email address is: bcworkscoach@gmail.com. She is always looking for volunteers and is currently seeking volunteers to help prepare resumes for participant and for volunteers who can help Dawn access credit reports for participants. January 18, 2021 is Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, a federal holiday established by the US Congress in 1983 to honor the life and work of the slain civil rights leader and, in the words of this year's presidential proclamation, to "encourage all Americans to recommit themselves to Dr. King’s dream by engaging in acts of service to others, to their community, and to our Nation." Midday marks this year's MLK Day of Service by focusing on the work of three local individuals for whom every day is a day of service. Tom speaks first with J.C. Faulk, a diversity and inclusion consultant who was named a 2016 Community Fellow by Open Society Institute-Baltimore for his Circle of Voices project, an innovative effort to open dialogues between disparate communities. Faulk is also the founder of BMore Community Food, which is helping underserved communities weather the COVID-19 storm by re- distributing and donating surplus, healthful food to families on Baltimore's West Side and across the city. Tom's next guest is Dr. Marisela Gomez. She is a physician, public health expert and the author of Race, Class, Power, and Organizing in East Baltimore: Rebuilding Abandoned Communities in America (2013). Dr. Gomez is also one of the co-founders of VOLAR, the acronym for Village of Love and Resistance, an organization promoting a new cooperative model for economic development that is bringing land and property ownership to marginalized communities in Baltimore’s East Side. Tom's final guest today is Bishop Bruce Lewandowski, the Pastor of the Sacred Heart of Jesus Church in Highlandtown, and an active member of BUILD, Baltimoreans United in Leadership Development. His Catholic ministry at Sacred Heart, like his previous ministries in New York, Saint Lucia in the Caribbean, and Philadelphia, is grounded in community organizing and activism. The Right Reverend Lewandowski's parish includes a LatinX community that has been particularly hard-hit by the coronavirus, and whose residents have had difficulties accessing traditional sources of relief. All of Midday's MLK Day of Service guests today join us on Zoom. ___________________________________________________________________ Tom took a few moments in today's program to acknowledge the untimely passing Sunday of a man whose service to his community was legendary: "A word about incredibly sad news for our city. Dante Barksdale, the outreach coordinator for Safe Streets, was shot to death near the Douglas Homes in east Baltimore yesterday. I do not know the circumstances that led to Dante’s murder. I do know that as a “violence interrupter,” Dante dedicated the last ten years of his life to de-escalating disputes and intervening in situations where he convinced people who were considering violence to consider an alternative. He repeatedly placed himself in dangerous situations, using his skill, intelligence and compassion to show people a better way; a safer way; a way forward. He was trying to make Baltimore better. He refused to give up on young people who had, in some instances, given up on themselves. Dante knew the pressures and stresses that people in communities of color experience, and how those challenges can sometimes lead to bad decision-making. He knew about this because of his own life experience, and because of his empathy and his love. His loss is profoundly sad. His presence and leadership will be sorely missed. His murder is a horrible reminder of the challenges we face as a city. I last spoke with Dante here on Midday in August. A link to that conversation is here. Dante Barksdale was 46 years old." -- Tom Hall, host, Midday See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Derek Grier had little experience with faith as a child. His Catholic mom prayed with him by his bedside and sent him to a Baptist summer camp. There he felt the presence of God but didn't experience the Holy Spirit in that way again until he was in class at Howard University. As an African-American, Grier felt Islam appealed to him more than Christianity, but when he encountered Jesus in a significant way, his life was thoroughly changed. In his new book, "When God Stops," Dr. Grier, now pastor of a large church, shares his own story alongside the accounts of eight biblical men and women. Listen as Charisma Connection host Chris Johnson asks him to share more of his life-transforming testimony.
On today's episode, Seth and Kevin speak to Charles , one of the co-founders of the company of Passion 4 Life, about how he and Linda (his wife) started Passion 4 Life liquid vitamins and minerals, (www.passion4lifevitamins.com) which helps to fund Passion 4 K.I.D.S. Charles’ passion came from personal experience enduring an “upbringing” rivaling a movie script. Born in Amsterdam, Holland during World War II, he watched his Jewish father and grandparents be snatched away by the Nazis in front of him at age 2. His Catholic mom couldn’t take care of him so he was placed in a state-run orphanage where he suffered abuse of every kind for 8 years and survived on eating flower bulbs until he could no longer take it and ran away at age 10 drifting all over Holland. He vowed one day to help children, like himself, who needed stability, love and someone to care. Linda dreamed of working in the White House. That dream came true when, at age 19, she became a Staff Assistant to President Ford at the White House. She later became Director of Scheduling and Press for President and Mrs. Ford as well as Dr. Robert Schuller at the Crystal Cathedral. She also worked with Dr. Billy Graham for over 25 years in many of his crusades around the world. Linda and Charles are very hands on with the children they support. In an effort to bring fun and joy to their young, troubled lives, Linda and Charles take them on weekend outings, bowling, to the park, to sporting events, restaurants, etc. They personally try to teach the children manners, ethics, morals and help them navigate the difficulties of life. Because many of the children come from devastating, unstable home situations, the Van Kesslers develop long-term relationships with the children and reinforce to them that they will be a constant presence in their lives for many years to come which allows them to build a level of trust that the children can depend on. Charles and Linda spend many hours weekly visiting “their” kids in the hospital or at home, purchasing and delivering basic necessities of food, clothing and water to the children and serve as a resource of love, compassion and assistance in any way possible to the children and their families they are honored to serve. With a background in media and public relations, Linda organizes all Passion 4 K.I.D.S.’ events and works tirelessly with the media to gain attention for these children in need. As Gandhi once said “The best way to lose yourself is in service to others.” Service & community involvement was a way we initially connected in our relationship and continues to be a value we share together. In this episode, we share where our passion for service comes from, what issues we care most about, and how we continue to lean in to leadership roles in our community. Music “Sunny” by Bensound.com. What We Talked about in this Episode: Where our passion for service comes from For Ashley, volunteer and philanthropy weren't words that were used regularly by her parents but everything was about gratitude Thank you cards for the holidays were written on Christmas Day Her parents helped her understand that there are people who are less fortunate Excess wasn’t a thing, toys & games that were still very loved would be donated In high school, volunteering was a way to get out of the house but she slowly learned in importance For Billy, service was important at an early age came from his mother’s work as a social worker He would work at senior centers with her or deliver Meals on Wheels with parents His Catholic education plays a role in this because the faith is rooted in social justice What issues we are most passionate about We don’t volunteer to just volunteer, we want to make an impact Education & learning is at the center of many of our commitments We love seeing others grow and develop into leaders How service continues to be a way we come together How service initially brought us together How we know when the other person’s skill set is more needed for each of our commitments Our desire to serve on a board together How you should always gain something some service You should be gaining a new relationship, a new perspective, or a positive feeling How we have learned to lean in to leadership roles The key for both of us has been to identifying gaps and filling them Simply showing up shows commitment Being out in the community and understanding other people’s problems
Andy La Valle ewas living life large. His Catholic faith of his youth was not important as a successful business man. A challenge from a Holllywood actor, JIm Caviezel, to go to Medjugorje was a game changer. Andy's first reaction to the invite was arrogance. He was not traveling 15 hours in a plane to pray a rosary every day. However, Andy did go to Medjugorje and experienced a profound conversion. Listen in to hear more and what happened when he returned. He is now a strong advocate for fasting and shares why today.
From the prophet Isaiah, we heard the famous prophecy, ‘on this mountain the Lord of hosts will prepare for all peoples a banquet of rich food, a banquet of fine wines. A food rich an juicy of strained vines, on this mountain He removed the mourning veil covering all peoples and the shroud wrapping all nations, he will destroy death forever.’ This prophecy as we all know has been fulfilled. Which is this mountain of which the Lord has prepared a rich banquet for all peoples? Well from the Prophet Daniel. Remember the famous dream, where there was the great statue, with the golden head and the feet of clay and iron. We’re told that small stone was cut from the mountain and it came down and struck the feet of the statue. The small stone itself destroying the statue became a great mountain. That of course is easily interpreted to be Our Lord Jesus Christ, that small stone, that single stone which smashed the head of Goliath, which we know from the book of Samuel. That small stone became the great mountain, Christ Jesus, but how does that fulfil the prophecy? Christ is the head and His body of which we are members, His body is the Church. It is in the Church, the mystical body of Christ that this prophecy is fulfilled, namely that the Lord has prepared a banquet for all peoples, all the gentiles, all the nations of the earth, enter into the One Church. A banquet of rich food and banquet of fine wines, the Eucharist and the Sacraments that come with it. On this mountain he removes the mourning veil that covers all peoples, namely sin, disease and death. And the shroud enwrapping all nations, He will destroy death forever. It is only in the One Church Christ founded that this happens, namely His Catholic and Apostolic Church.
FeedBack w. Wes Nyle. EP19. Jack White. 07.13.12July 9th marked the birthday for one of Detroit’s most notable musicians, a player who simultaneously revolutionized and resurrected true American Blues, but never let one type of music define who he was or who he would be collaborating with.In the documentary It Might Get Loud Jack White stated that Son Houses’s Grinnin In Your Face is his favorite song of all time. The grit and simplicity of this song may shed light on the why White uses tried and true techniques to keep his relatively fresh concepts in a lo-fi time capsule.White started banging on a drum set at age 6, and mulled around the garage rock scene of Detroit for years, contemplating where his overactive drive lead him. His Catholic upbringing would find him as an altar boy in younger years and nearly bring him to a seminary in Wisconsin, with aspirations of becoming a priest. His musical mind would eventually get the better of him when he realized that the school may not let him play his new amp in the dorms. In 1997 Jack created The White Stripes, a highly stylized two piece, with his now ex-wife Meg White, known for their simplistic writing and garage band static. The early years of the band created rumors about what the true relationship was between Jack and Meg. And in 2003 as the duo’s infamy continued to expand, Wayne Coyne and The Flaming Lips touched on the hype, and insanity that surrounded The White Stripes, on the song titled Thank You Jack White. Two years down the road Jack’s creativity and thirst for collaborative art would help cast the mold for The Raconteurs: a legit four piece featuring two members of the Greenhornes, bassist Jack Lawerence and precisionist Patrick Keeler. The band’s first full length was recorded in the home of the bands 4th member, Brendan Benson: a multi-instrumentalist and successful solo artist. Both Raconteurs albums claimed gold success in the UK.2009 was the year of the super group, bringing the US rock genre powerhouses like Dead By Sunrise, Atoms For Peace, Tinted Windows, and Them Crooked Vultures. Jack White was not going to be left out. Even if the band didn’t admit to being labeled as a super group it was hard to deny The Dead Weather combined the talents of Dean Fertita of Queens of the Stone Age, Allison Mosshart of The Kills and the other “Jack” Jack Lawrence. White and Allison credit Captain Beefheart as a major influence on the band’s sound as did the band I featured a couple weeks back Jukebox The Ghost. Here’s a taster of that influence. It wasn’t till his 37th year on this planet; White would use his partners in musical genius to help create his solo album Blunderbuss. This new album defines what White is through and through. The album uses almost exclusively 1st takes with limited track doubling, coupled with recording done using analog tape, and ribbon mics. The signature sound brings forth exactly what White wants. A warm tone that sounds best played from vinyl. A vinyl that can be purchased from Jack’s record store/ label 3rd Man Records. Marketing ploy or not a thank you is deserved to a man who cherishes American music at its greatest and stopped at nothing to shine a beacon on what great music sounds like and how it is created.Happy Birthday Jack White.Tracks Heard In This Podcast: Grinnin In Your Face – Son House Let’s Build A Home – The White Stripes The Hardest Button To Button – The White Stripes Thank You Jack White – The Flaming Lips Store Bought Bones – The Raconteurs Cut Like A Buffalo – The Dead Weather BlunderBuss – Jack White
