Amy Marcs, Sex and (Self) Love after a Double Mastectomy: In 2009, Amy received a breast cancer diagnosis and intuitively knew that a double mastectomy was her best option—no easy decision for "a petite Jewish girl with great boobs." (No easy decision for anyone, ever). Marcs loved her breasts—her journey through the grieving process is heartbreaking, touching, inspiring and hilarious. It's a grieving process that many sick people can relate to as all of us lose a part of our identities we were once attached to. We get down to business in this episode, intimately discussing sex and (self) love after a double mastectomy. Today, on the other side, Amy (and her new boobs) tours her one woman show, "Nice Tits," and speaks out about the specific pains of breast cancer and double mastectomies. Nichole Proffitt, mindfulness coach for women, somatic experiencing practitioner Mindfulness and Chronic Illness: Nichole Proffitt ( http://www.presencemindfulness.com/ ) had been seriously practicing meditation for years when her first fibromyalgia symptoms developed, and (plot-twist) meditation was making it all worse. This isn’t an episode about traditional meditation and using it to heal from illness. It’s an episode about accepting what is, seeking out your truth, surrendering to your truth, and then being willing to let go… of everything. The closer Nichole got to her absolute truth ( whether that truth was that she couldn’t hang out with toxic people anymore, or eat her favorite foods, or stay up past 10pm even though she’s always been a night owl) and the more she surrendered to them, the healthier and happier she has become. She said, “These truths, as hard as they are to come by, and even harder to live by, are what give me back my life… the years, relationships, friendships, jobs and everything I have lost.” THIS is mindfulness and chronic illness. Nichole’s Facebook Weekly Challenge: Ask yourself deeper questions and become open to your own deeper answers. What a doozy, huh? This may seem totally overwhelming. Often, it’s those deep—DEEP—answers that we are trying to avoid so that we can hang on tightly to our own visions. But, this week, gently try to go inward, listen just a little closer, and allow small parts of your truth to emerge. Tune in to the episode to hear more about how to actually do this. Ashley Cantley, Feng Shui expert, manifester, mama bear Feng Shui for Health: Ashley Cantley was drawn to this ancient Chinese practice when faced with healing from a toxic relationship. Similarly, I only started putting attention on my living space when I was sick and doing some healing of my own. Most people who have a current #lifegoal of “heal from illness” are in bed, and, in that case, shouldn’t the bedroom feel like a sanctuary? I believe that my living space is a reflection of how I am in the world, and I committed to making my whole home a giant vision board: Everything in it should make me feel good! Essentially, how to feng shui for health. That being said, I knew very little about the actual art and science of Feng Shui, so I was pretty pumped to get Ashley on and talk about practical suggestions to use Feng Shui for health and healing. How is Feng Shui an extension of holistic health? And how does it enhance other self-care practices? How can we make small changes in our home to enhance our health? Listen in here! Steamy Chick Vaginal Steaming 101: How many of you are shaking your heads in amusement? How many of you are doing that but also VERY curious? And how many of you are just like, this sounds weird but I am excited! After so many years dealing with periods that are so heavy I'm left chronically anemic, I had an entirely open mind when I first heard about vaginal steaming. Five months ago, a friend responded to a Facebook post I had written (Ladies! Any and all advice to slow the flow??) emphatically suggesting vaginal steaming. That was only five months ago, but the idea of steaming my uterus piqued my interest so much that I have been following around Steamy Chick on social media, reading her blogs, and steaming at home myself since. I'm so pumped that Keli Garza, founder of Steamy Chick, came on the show and now I get to share this gem with all of you! This episode is your vaginal steaming 101 course. We discuss its ancient origin (this is not some new trend, you guys), exactly how, when, and why to steam—steaming has been shown to help with everything from infertility to missing periods to blood clots. Plus, it literally feels like a sauna for your uterus. Those of you who are following along with my period series, this episode is part II. I am still in my trial period with vaginal steaming and will have a lot more to say about it in the coming months, but, for now, ENJOY this vaginal steaming 101 course. Weekly Challenge: Steamy Chick challenges us to steam at home this week! You don't need to buy anything, you can steam using things you already have: A pot, some tea, salt, and water. I just finished steaming five days in a row as per Keli's suggestion, and I'm meant to wait until the end of my period to steam for three more days (find out why in this episode!). So, my steam may or may not be lining up with the weekly challenge, but I WILL be waiting to hear from all of you on this! Dear naysayers, what have you got to lose? NOTHING. Cindy Kennedy In this Lyme disease podcast episode, I interview Cindy Kennedy ( www.pursuewellness.us ). Cindy is a Nurse Practitioner who worked in women’s health for over 20 years. She practiced gynecology and has cared for thousands of patients. Unbeknownst to her, she contracted Lyme disease. She never saw a tick, or a bullseye rash. Her symptoms were subtle at first, and then in 2011 her disease struck with vengeance. Even as a knowledgeable health care professional, the struggles to find a cause became overwhelming. In general, she discovered that health care professionals are not adequately trained to recognize and treat Lyme disease and its co-infections. She came to feel the same sinking feeling that other Lyme sufferers must bear; the endless walk down the frightening path of misdiagnosis, shattered hope, and disappointment. Resources for learning were not very credible. As her health improved she became passionate about providing education and guidance for those seeking information about Lyme disease, health and healing. All this has led to the development of her popular Lyme disease podcast series, Living With Lyme (www.livingwithlyme.us ) and her private practice, Pursue Wellness. So, this week she challenged us: Upon awakening, find and list five things you are doing well. In this culture of "not enough," we often lose sight of acknowledging ourselves for all of our growth, all of our effort, all of our step-up-to-the-plate moments—big or small. If I pause right now and think of five things, here's what I get: I showed up on time to my commitments today, I returned all of my emails, I gave a friend a hug, I paid for everything I bought today with money I have, (not on credit), I ate healthy food today, I have spread kindness and love. Simple stuff! Wouldn't it be awesome to start our days like this instead of the usual, "I didn't get enough sleep, and I don't have enough time in this day and I suck." David Bransky, Developmental Alphabioticist Alphabiotics Just like computers, when things start overheating, we need to reboot and reset in order to function most effectively. (Or function at all.) Alphabiotics is an alignment process that aims to do just that: Reset the body into its pure state of balance and relaxation. The Alignment process is accomplished with you lying on your back with your head at the high end of the alignment table. The process involves a unique and invigorating movement of the head and is accomplished within less than a minute. Instantly, the brain hemispheres integrate, overly tight and tense muscles relax, weak muscles strengthen, hips and shoulders level, legs become even, and balance is once again restored. The process is gentle and easy. As we know, stress plays a huge role in chronic illness. Do I consider alphabiotics a modality that can support you in healing from chronic illness? Absolutely. As always, listen to your body, ask a doctor or someone you trust, but, as I say in this episode, healing comes in many forms, I just do what works. Alphabiotics WORKS for a lot of people. Discussed in this Episode: What Alphabiotics is and is notWhat stress is and how we can deal with itHow alphabiotics hits a reset buttonWhat happens to our bodies when we are stressedEpigeneticsWhat an alignment looks like and feels like. The process from beginning to end. Alpha state vs. beta statePresence within daily conversationsSlowing down and staying with the bodyMy skepticism and fears Alphabiotic myths: Debunking and explaining common beliefs about the processFloat tanks Resources Mentioned: David's StudioDavid's instagramSlowing Down to the Speed of LifeFloat Tanks Weekly Challenge: A practice of presence: For the next two weeks, we have been challenged to put our phones down, look our colleagues and friends in the eyes and ask how the heck they are. That's it, my friend! We simply practice intimacy through presence— we notice how uncomfortable this does or does not make us. We soften our bodies and stand straight up with our arms at our sides—no freaking walls. I know, it sounds simple, but start paying attention and see how often you're able to have that type of interaction. Keep me posted on Instagram @sheajackie. I'm excited for this one! Jason Snell, Friend, Artist, clearly takes a great rugged phot How to Help a Sick Friend: Jason Snell (http://jasonjsnell.com/) and I have been friends for 12 years. Initially, we trauma-bonded and built our friendship on codependency, then, years later, we got lucky enough to build a healthy, nourishing, peaceful and fun friendship. Jason—lucky for him— happens to have multiple close friends who have struggled with extreme chronic illness. Why did I bring him on? Because he has subtly been an extraordinary friend through all of our experiences. In this episode, find out how to help a sick friend and what made Jason's friendship through illness so different from others. Find out what keeps a friendship intimate, strong, light, and generally fulfilling for both parties in the midst of chronic illness or simply a very dark time. But, even further, listen in if your interested in making the switch from pseudo-intimacy to a deeper intimacy, the shift from enmeshment to love. Discussed in this episode: Healing TraumaGrowing up in an alcoholic homeTrauma-bonding How to help a sick friend How to be a friend through illness. On either side Enmeshment vs. bring a good friend Getting permission to help Walking a fine line of being loving and detached Over identification with traumatic childhoods Conflating intimacy with intensity How to effectively communicate needs Keeping things normal within the friendship Accepting othersEffectively getting your needs met Sex abuse Empathy Letting go of the “helper” role The question, “How are you feeling right now?” and why it’s important Resources: Claire Wineland Glennon Doyle Weekly Challenge: This is the kind of weekly challenge that will take a lifetime of practice. (For me, anyway). These next couple of weeks, we work on accepting others. Look at what it is in you that can’t accept someone exactly as they are today. To take it a step further, consider if this person is falling short of meeting your needs. Now, instead of trying to change this person, ask yourself where you can get these needs met elsewhere ( Bonus points if needs are met within yourself!). This will come in handy when you’re wondering how to help your sick friend. Help yourself first. And, it will MOST certainly come in handy if you are sick. Stay accountable, my friends. This isn't an episode about traditional meditation and using it to heal from illness. It's an episode about accepting what is, seeking out your truth, surrendering to your truth, and then being willing to let go... of everything. The closer Nichole got to her absolute truth ( whether that truth was that she couldn't hang out with toxic people anymore, or eat her favorite foods, or stay up past 10pm even though she's always been a night owl) and the more she surrendered to them, the healthier and happier she has become. She said, "These truths, as hard as they are to come by, and even harder to live by, are what give me back my life... the years, relationships, friendships, jobs and everything I have lost." THIS is mindfulness and chronic illness. Nichole's Facebook Weekly Challenge: Ask yourself deeper questions and become open to your own deeper answers. What a doozy, huh? This may seem totally overwhelming. Often, it's those deep—DEEP—answers that we are trying to avoid so that we can hang on tightly to our own visions. But, this week, gently try to go inward, listen just a little closer, and allow small parts of your truth to emerge. Tune in to the episode to hear more about how to actually do this. Using her personal stories and those of strangers, she shows us the landscape to healing by holding our hands through trauma’s dark alleys. Amy B. Scher, author of "This is how I Save my Life" and expert in mind-body-spirit healing Amy B. Scher, "This Is How I Save My Life" After seven years of boundless symptoms, innumerable diagnoses, and all the treatments you can imagine, the root of Amy's trouble was discovered: Lyme disease. Amy B. Scher (http://amybscher.com) had gotten accustomed to a life in-between wellness and illness, rarely fully in either world. When traveling to India for an experimental stem cell treatment was suggested to her, she knew she had to go—not necessarily because she knew it would work, but because she had to try one more (last) thing. The healing Amy experienced in India looked different than she imagined it would(it involved eating chocolate cake and macaroni and cheese), but, indeed, healing did come. Amy's stem cell treatment in India is the framework for her new book, "This is How I Save My Life," ( http://amy-b-scher.mykajabi.com/p/this-is-how-i-save-my-life ) but the book is about so much more—how to take responsibility for our own healing when nothing else is working. In this episode, we dive in to all of the different things you can do to help yourself—all you can do to save your life when no one else can. Weekly Challenge: Amy asks, "how much of your time and energy is spent trying to control?" I know I waste my precious energy in this way far too often. Amy urges us to practice letting go when we want to fight our current circumstances by repeating the mantra, "let go let go let go let go let go let go." In her book, "This is How I Save My Life," and in this episode, Amy explains why and how she did this in the chaos of India—and how it helped her heal. Most people who have a current #lifegoal of "heal from illness" are in bed, and, in that case, shouldn't the bedroom feel like a sanctuary? I believe that my living space is a reflection of how I am in the world, and I committed to making my whole home a giant vision board: Everything in it should make me feel good! Stella DeMont, founder of Whole Being Alignment, vivacious warrior Stella: Eleven episodes of pneumonia affected Stella between the ages of one and twelve. Yes, ELEVEN different episodes. Always bouncing back, she was never seen as sickly by herself or her fellows. At 19, after a bad sunburn, she woke up to a sudden fever, pain in every joint, and, shortly after the onset, was told that she would likely be in a wheelchair for the rest of her life. It was at that point that her real research and search for integrative healing began, but it wasn't until many years and a Lyme disease diagnosis later that Stella was able to tap into her own true power to heal. Today, after saving her own life, healing from Lyme, and a host of other illness, Stella spends her days helping others get in touch with their own power—their own miraculous body's wisdom and guidance— so they can heal whatever needs healing in their own lives. Maya Dusenbery, author of Doing Harm, feminist writer, knowledgable AF Doing Harm: After her Rheumatoid Arthritis diagnosis, feminist writer and author of Doing Harm, Maya Dusenbery, intuitively dove into the topic of women's health—not so much the uterus and the ovaries but a more realistic and extensive look at women's health. Why are women treated differently in the ER and the doctor's office? How did medicine become a wealthy, white, male profession? How does the old diagnosis of hysteria still play a role in medicine today? Maya answers these questions and so much more in this must-read. She uses statistics, research, personal hypothesis and heartbreaking stories from other women to make the case that bad medicine and lazy science leave women dismissed, misdiagnosed, and sick. In this episode we discuss all of this plus, of course, self-care in the midst of self-advocacy. Shona Curley, co-owner of Hasti Pilates, founder of red kite meditations, mother, Lyme warrior Shona Curley's Lyme Journey: Shona is one of the seemingly lucky ones: She found the tick and pulled it out. But, even that didn't stop chronic lyme disease symptoms from appearing, and, surprisingly, it also didn't streamline her diagnosis. There's no doubt that, in Northern California where Lyme disease is prevalent, Shona should have been quickly diagnosed based on her symptoms and the tick, but doctors denied the possibility of a Lyme infection for over two years. A barrage of symptoms—constant colds, severe GI issues, insomnia, crushing anxiety, noise and light sensitivity, cognitive impairment—left Shona and her family terrified and desperate for answers. It was a by-chance meeting with a random doctor who listened that left her with a Lyme diagnosis less than one year ago. Since then, Shona has found great healing from chronic Lyme disease in Buhner herbs, antibiotics, a medical intuitive, amalgam removal, and her own meditations tailored specifically for Lyme disease sufferers. You can find her meditations at redkitemeditations.com. You might find the one for your lymph system a fitting purchase for this week's challenge. Weekly Challenge Shona challenges us to do use visualization meditation to enhance our system's lymphatic drainage...specifically in the brain. You guys, the lymphatic system is of top importance when healing from (anything) Lyme disease—we need it to be properly moving along in order to rid our body of toxins. The lymphatic system does not have a pump, we are responsible for its flow through our own movement and detox efforts. So many people struggle with getting well simply because of a clogged up lymph. Shona says that by practicing a visualization of spring rain flowing down into your brain and picking up the debris on its way (to gather in your lymph and then be excreted) can have a huge impact on the actual movement. I'm 100% down because WHY NOT!? I will be posting other lymph draining practices this week on my IG, @sheajackie. NOTHING. Unless your pregnant then PLEASE do not do this because you absolutely have something to lose. Riva Lombardi, actress, mother, gratitude practicer Riva Lombardi and Unexplained Infertility: You'll hear a baby gurgling (occasionally screaming) on and off through this episode— this story of unexplained infertility ends in the birth of a beautiful little girl. In fact, eight-week-old Birdie was given just a 10% chance. But, she's here and she's loud and she's healthy. Birdie came after five years of struggle—miscarriages, heartache, devastation, hope—on the third IVF cycle. In this episode, we discuss Riva's journey with her husband, how they made it through, and they're doing today. Below you will find a more in-depth list of what we discuss, but, first, some advice from Riva—what to say and what not to say to someone struggling with infertility: Maybe don’t say things like- "Do you really want kids?” (said as her 2 wonderful children run crazily around the house playing) “Oh I had a miscarriage too, it's not the end of the world” (says the woman with two children who conceived naturally) “How old are you?” (followed by an assessment of whether or not you 'still have time') “A friend of a friend tried for 4 years and then just got pregnant on her own!" (btw- I know a bunch of infertile friends who told their friends that too) Instead, try saying/doing things like - “I'm so sorry you're going through this” (and then sit quietly, listen, then offer to make them a cup of herbal tea because their acupuncturist probably has them off caffeine) “How are you? Do you want to talk about it?” (give them the option. I know it makes you feel uncomfortable, but try it out) After a miscarriage, failed cycle, or just because you know that they’re going a monthly struggle, send flowers, a card or candy. Acknowledge that they just lost the baby they'd been hoping for, or that another month of disappointment went by. My husband's Aunt came to me one day with a book on infertility,"I bought you this, and I bought one for myself too, so I can try to understand what you're going through".The book didn't matter (albeit it was an interesting read) but the idea of her trying to understand what I was going through was everything I had ever wanted. It was the single most caring thing anyone had ever done for me. Weekly Challenge: My dear friends, this is just a theme lately: Gratitude. I recently did an Instagram story on gratitude. I've written on gratitude here and I was recently interviewed by the Five Minute Journal on my relationship with gratitude. I love this stuff—I call it "finding your G-Spot" for a reason. It's THAT good. Riva's challenge is to say out loud one thing you're grateful for everyday. Throughout her experience with unexplained infertility, it helped her tremendously to gain perspective. Have a loved one? Do it with them over breakfast or before bed. Have kids? Maybe you can add this practice into your routine. Have friends? Give them a call and tell them what you're grateful for everyday for a week! Next time someone asks how you're doing say, "I'm so grateful that the sun is shining today." Keep me posted on IG @sheajackie how you do with this challenge. I will share my gratitude with you. Maybe I'll share in my Instagram stories everyday! Ira Pastor, CEO of Bioquark, superhero geek Bioquark: Bioquark is a regenerative healthcare company focused on developing proprietary natural biopharmaceuticals and consumer healthcare products, targeting the regeneration and repair of complex human organs and tissues. Ira Pastor, CEO of Bioquark, is also a 30+ year veteran of the traditional pharmaceutical industry. He left pharmaceuticals to start Bioquark due to the fact that, in spite of generating close to $1 trillion annually, his former industry was incapable of generating any cures for the chronic diseases responsible for the majority of human degeneration, suffering, and death. Bioquark is dedicated to finding a way to repair and renew our cells rather than managing our symptoms. Weekly Challenge: This week's challenge is to switch up your routines! Before you get oppositional, hear this out. I'm not talking about switching up your bedtime routine or switching up your beloved morning routine. I'm talking about eating different foods, giving your cells a breather from certain supplements, changing up some skin care ingredients, and maybe hiking instead of doing yoga. I'm pretty bad at this, my friends. It's a hard one for me—I love what I love and I stick to what I love. My integrative medicine doctor in NY stressed this randomness idea to me once and I panicked, "But I don't want to go any day, ever, without matcha or avocados." So, I understand the panic, but he told me that if I didn't start switching it up, my body would become sensitive to the foods I love. I try to make it like a fun game now. I'm on a hunt for more NEW constantly. I urge you to look at the ruts you're in, switch it up, and see how it feels. Dominique Toney, actor, recording artist, healthy food-lover Graves' Disease The autoimmune version of hyperthyroidism, Graves' disease affects mostly women and many people go misdiagnosed. For Dominique, a stressful event in her junior year of college marked the beginning of Graves' symptoms—she was plagued by heat intolerance, weight loss, insomnia, tremors, and anxiety. Because Graves' is often genetic and Dominique's mother also suffered from the disease, it was fairly easy to get a diagnosis. But that was just the beginning of the journey. In this episode we discuss how Dominque has managed the highs and the lows of Graves' disease for the last decade, and how she manages a big, full life with self-care! Contact Dominque: IG/FB/Twitter: @domtoney. Website: www.dominiquetoney.com Weekly Challenge: MAKE ENOUGH FOOD TO HAVE LEFTOVERS This seems simple enough, I know, but it is a game changer! I absolutely love this weekly challenge. Each week, I try to make a healthy soup or stew and have enough for multiple meals OR put some in the freezer. This way, I always have a healthy meal available when I don't have time to cook. Once you try this, you will use this self-care tactic again and again. It can truly save the day! Dominique suggests you research a delicious recipe (with foods that make you feel good), then do your shopping, then cook your meal and freeze a serving! I do this in mason jars with plastic lids. Lauren Kennedy, soon-to-be nurse, Hawaiian paddler, lover and badass Lauren Kennedy At 29 years old, Lauren Kennedy was thriving. She had finally found some peace and healing after her boyfriend’s suicide five years earlier, and she was living an abundant, hopeful life filled with activity. When she started experiencing spotting between periods, a friend suggested she go to the doctor just to be safe. She never imagined she would have ovarian cancer as a young woman. The next many months were unexpectedly grueling, from the discovery of the tumors to grieving her great dream of having children. She showed up, put one foot in front of the other and today Lauren is thriving again, her eggs are frozen and she’s at peace with her new body. Contact Lauren @lolomaui Weekly Challenge THE FIVE MINUTE JOURNAL My friends, journaling is really really dope. There are so many studies on the positive effects of therapeutic writing for people with chronic illness. Research has shown that writing can reduce symptoms, help you sleep better, and help generate an overall better outlook on life. And then there are the wondrous benefits of gratitude (which the five-minute journal utilizes). Gratitude is shown to significantly improve your coping and general happiness on a day-to-day basis. For some people this is a hard habit to get into—maybe you don’t like journaling or you just can’t find the time, or you’re a judgey judge and think it’s SO lame. Lauren suggested a great place to start. The five-minute journal (an app or paperback) makes it really easy and fun to use these tools. If you are already a seasoned journaler (like myself) then simply add these segments into your routine: In the morning, list three things you are grateful for and three things YOU can do to make today amazing. At night, list three amazing things that happened today and three things you could have done to make today even better! That’s it. So simple. Seven days of journaling. Follow me on IG @sheajackie for my own gratitude list and "amazing things" updates. Katayoun and Marcello Marciano, mother and child Autism: In honor of Autism Awareness Month, I had Katayoun Marciano on to speak about her experience parenting her beautiful, non-verbal, 17 year-old autistic son, Marcello. Autism is a bio-neurological development disability that usually appears within the first stages of life. How autism presents differs greatly from patient to patient— the spectrum is wide (to put it mildly). Little else is known about autism—the most controversial and mysterious piece being the cause—making it an upsetting and disorienting process for parents. In this episode, Katayoun tells all about raising Marcello, from getting his diagnosis to tantrums that take the whole family hostage. She gives parents new to this journey a lightly sketched road map and a hand to hold. To contact Katayoun: IG: @katswrite Weekly Challenge: DO ONE NEW AND FUN ACTIVITY AND SEE IF IT CHANGES YOUR RELATIONSHIP TO YOUR REALITY. This is a FUN one!
