Ashley Holt is passionate about bringing women's voices and leadership into the world! After facing divorce and becoming a single parent, Ashley reinvented her life and turned her pain into her power and purpose! She is the author of Goddess, Wake up! Through all of her books, Ashley's mission is to empower others to claim their power, recognize their highest potential and live their best life! We begin our conversation by jumping in to discuss Ashley's journey through her divorce and how being introduced to positive affirmations changed her life! For Ashley, this was a “mind-blowing” transformation. Growing up, Ashley didn't have a lot of confidence and felt very insecure. When she started using positive affirmations, it took her a while to get comfortable speaking those words into existence. What Ashely found was that they started to work! It was then that she started researching how these affirmations help to rewire the brain. She then began to listen to these affirmations while she slept. She then asked herself, why was she just learning this information? It was then that she started teaching these affirmations to her children. She then started to incorporate these affirmations into children's books so other children including her own would be exposed to these affirmations as well. Ashley started to share her stories at schools and libraries. As her children grew up she ventured into writing books for teens. Through her talks with teen girls, the mom's would reach out and say that even they needed these messages and that's how she eventually wrote books for adults. Ashely then goes on the explain that during this time she realized that what she needed to do was to share how she got through her pain and begin sharing how she started to lie a life based on her potential instead of the pain. This became the seven steps to the goddess mindset transformation! The commitment to this transformation is that it takes five minutes per day. That's not very long! We then dive into the contents of her book. The 28- day goddess mindset transformation is based on the word G.O.D.D.E.S.S Each letter is an affirmation and teaching. G- Get outside your comfort zone O-Overcome negative self-talk D-Dare to dream big D- Declare your desires to the universe E-Expect Miracles S-Stand In your truth S-Surrender to self-love Ashley shares that towards the end of the 28 days, you will have gotten outside of your comfort zone and allowed yourself to see what is possible. You are beginning to not just dream but dream BIGGER! When you think of a goddess, she stands in honor of her superpower and you can not take that away from her because it is her very essence. Ashley feels that we are all here with one special gift and we are supposed to shine into the world. We need to stop hiding that goddess within us because the world is waiting for it! What is your goddess superpower and how do you find it? Ashley encourages us to stop playing small and unleash her inner goddess! Hello-ho-ho, everyone! Welcome to the most wonderful time of the year -- Sagittarius Season! It's also the time that many a film is set, designed to illicit "cheer" and "goodwill" and "Jesus". For this reason, we have decided to add a new mini series to our docket where we watch not just any holiday movie, but movies we have, embarrassingly, just never got around to watching. For Ashley, one of those films is this one -- National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation. We watched this live on Twitch and encountered a mini Q&A with children. We looked up the Treaty of Versailles. It was a hoot. Maybe you'll want to watch the upcoming ones live, too? Follow us on Instagram to learn more about our upcoming watch parties! Veteran news booker and producer Ashley Bernardi founded Nardi Media in 2015, which quickly became a leading media relations agency with an expertise in broadcast, print, and online press. With a strategic focus on media relations, Ashley never misses an opportunity to develop relationships with reporters and producers, proactively generate media coverage and integrate her clients into the news of the day. Ashley has over a decade of booking and producing experience in national television broadcasting. More important than her lengthy list of accolades - including her tenure as a top booker at national news networks like Bloomberg and CBS News and booking producer for The Washington Post - is her passion for publicity. Her deep expertise extends to radio and television satellite media tours, booking guests for breaking news, media strategy and managing production logistics for live shots, television shoots, and more. Ashley has helped clients grow from zero exposure to household names on the New York Times Bestsellers list. Additionally, she has helped heads of state, lawmakers, celebrities, best-selling authors, non-profit organizations and national brands increase their exposure, credibility and awareness through strategic media placements, which include placing clients in top-tier publications and media outlets such as The Washington Post, The New York Times, TODAY, Good Morning America, CBS This Morning, NPR, Fortune, Business Insider, USA TODAY, PEOPLE, TIME, CNBC, Bloomberg, Women's World, Family Circle, FIRST For Women, and hundreds more. She is a sought-after speaker and regularly featured expert in the media, including WJLA-TV and WTTG-TV in Washington, D.C. Ashley shares about her wake up call with Lymes disease and how she learned one of the biggest lessons of her life; letting go of the doing, perfectionism and need to put her self care first. After 30 doctors with no diagnosis, it wasn't until her last visit with the 31st doctor who finally diagnosed her Lyme's. It took Ashley over 8 weeks to be able to get out of bed and start moving again. She sees this health crisis as one of her biggest gifts and has learned to re-prioritize her entire life around healing and honoring her body, mind and spirit. Ashley shares some of her healing practices that she incorporates daily to stay well and have good energy. Surrender everything, let go and let what's meant to flow and heal come in. Make time for stillness. For Ashley this was meditation and prayer. Do intuitive journaling and sacred writing. This is where you get out your pen and write whatever comes to mind, doodle or draw until you start to get more insight or flow to your thoughts. Gentle yoga and time in nature helped to lower her cortisol levels (which were dangerously high from her stressful job and lifestyle). Repeat the mantra 'this is temporary' as often as needed. This helped Ashley stay grounded! Be an overcomer, not an overachiever! Find what you loved to do as a child and start incorporating that in your day; for her it was dancing, singing, reading and writing. We also talked about the lessons of the pandemic and how this can be a time for real change and deep reflection on what's really important. This is a time to come home to yourself and connect more to spirit (or whatever you call that divine connection) and your true self. There’s a lot of debate these days around the topic of masks…no, I’m not talking about Covid masks right now, I’m talking about the proverbial masks that a lot of us put on. Maybe we are putting on a mask that says that we think we’re perfect or our life hasn’t been hard, or maybe we’re hiding things in our past. Those masks can be so dangerous, but when we begin to remove those masks to reveal the deep layers of truth within us, that’s when we really come alive. My guest this week is Ashley Abercrombie, a writer, speaker, and author of the book Rise of the Truth Teller: Own Your Story, Tell It Like It Is, and Live with Holy Gumption. She’s also the cohost of the hilarious and helpful podcast, Why, Tho? and can be found basically wherever there is a coffee or a cheese board. She lives in Los Angeles with her husband and two sons. I had the absolute best conversation with Ashley. When I met her, I knew she was my kind of person. With no further ado, join me to hear more about Ashley and her mission. 6:00 – The Ashley Abercrombie 101 Ashley is an author, speaker, and podcaster. When she was 21, she moved from the small town of Eden, North Carolina to Los Angeles where she met her husband and they had their first baby. Four years ago, they moved to Manhattan and had their second baby. Not long after, they realized how much they missed their home in California and decided it was time to move back to their beloved community there. Ashley has been writing since she was her little girl. Her best-selling author and chart-topping podcast were not overnight successes. Ashley has been writing since she was a little girl; hers has been a journey of 20 + years spent writing on lunch breaks, early in the morning, and late at night because she simply loves expressing herself through the written word. Writing has been a way for Ashley to process her own pain and serve the community around her. In her early 20s she became distracted from that calling and experienced a lot of pain, but was able to process it, recover, find her voice, and pursue writing and speaking full time. It took a long time for Ashley to understand how to put on her own oxygen mask first but take off her “performance” and “strong” mask to realize she couldn’t be strong all the time, every day. Especially in the Christian sphere, we can act like we need to show up with everything clean and tidy and that we can’t have messy stories, which is obviously a lie from the pit of hell. 11:36 – A Deep Wound, A Lifeline Growing up, Ashley and her brother spent a lot of time with their grandparents and great aunt while their parents worked. Ashley went to church with her great aunt every Sunday morning and brought flowers for the alter and opened the library for the pastor and church members. For Ashley, it represented a place where she could find respite and quiet from the noise of school and the hustle and bustle of trying to figure out everyday family life. When she was 16, Ashley decided to walk away from the faith community because as a teenager, she was struggling to relate to an older church crowd. At 21, while living in Los Angeles, Ashley came back to the church in one of her most broken moments. She found a community where she was loved and not judged. So many people grow up in the church but walk away from it at a young age, wrestling with their faith and what church looks like as an adult. We can absolutely be constantly wrestling with God and asking hard questions. There is so much shame around difficult conversations. Often the church makes judgements or avoids these conversations all together. The silence of shame became unbearable for Ashley and becoming more an more isolated worry what people would think about her but knowing she couldn’t tackle her struggles on her own. She started asking God where He was. One day she took a drive around Raleigh, NC and it started to storm. She started shouting at God and as she did, she felt flooded by the love the Holy Spirit had for her. She’d never experienced anything like it before, especially since she thought she had to have everything right before she could be loved by God. It was the first time she admitted to herself that she couldn’t hold things together, and certainly not on her own. It’s when she started to take the mask off and stopped caring what people thought about her. 21:30 – Leading with Story Recover communities lead with stories. The first thing you hear when you go to a meeting is other people’s stories. They also helped Ashley realize the things from her childhood that affected her as an adult. Ashley leads with stories in her book, the way she learned in recovery. It’s connective and teaches us that we’re not perfect. We don’t have to wear masks all the time, performing for each other. For the first time in her life, Ashley started to read the Bible and listen to sermons. She realized in the church she was fed a “victory narrative,” but when she took time to examine the lives of people in the Bible, she realized their lives were very hard and began to identify with the imperfection she was finally learning about. The Bible makes room for ALL people from all walks on life on all different journeys. Ashley realized she could finally stop trying to be perfect all the time because victories never came from easy times in the Bible. God uses imperfect, flawed people with imperfect, flawed stories. These biblical stories were literally the foundation of our faith and God’s plan! The more we own the dark parts of the story, the more healing it is for others who have parts of their stories they feel shame over. It’s easy for our shame to creep back in even in the midst of owning our stories in their entirety. God doesn’t lead us with shame or guilt or holding our past over our heads. We may have to reconcile our pasts, but you can identify that shame is not from God. It is not how we would speak to ourselves or anyone we love. We’re often expected in our cultures and societies to stay inside certain boundaries and stay in our little boxes. If we branch out from this, we’re told to get back in line. This is especially true for women in our culture. The reality of integrity is a deep commitment to being who we are, even when we’re working toward improving our lives. 32:47 – Consequences We can made mistakes and find freedom in forgiveness and repentance, but there may still be consequences to our actions. Even when David repents and has been forgiven, God tells him he will still have to face the consequences of what he did. When we’re brave enough to take off our masks and make mistakes and try again and do our best and be honest with our story, we give others the courage to do the same. We are supposed to value people as made in the image of God. It creates community here on earth as God designed it when we drop our performance narratives and allow our real stories to come through. 37:30 – Faith and Justice Ashley is passionate about social justice, fighting human-trafficking, and initiatives against mass incarceration. There’s a huge relationship between faith and justice and for many people in the world right now, they are waking up to it for the first time. Justice is the heart of God and goes hand to hand with righteousness in scripture. There is never a way we can hate our neighbor but say we love God. We can’t divorce our love of God from love of neighbor. When Ashley really started listening to people’s stories, she finally started to understand how unjust our systems are. God invites us to learn His ways in a relationship with Him that includes humanity. We must hold people and systems accountable to right damages and injustice that they create, which includes letting them feel the consequences of those actions. God has a lot to say about injustice, over 300 scriptures as a matter of fact. We are to create righteous communities and connections, valuing all people in God’s image. 51:06 – A Prayer As we navigate the rest of the 2020, Ashley’s prayer for the world and for herself is that this would be a time for us to lean into what the Spirit says. 54:00 - Getting to Know Our Guest Find out what Ashley’s professional athlete hype song would be, how she’d prove she’s from the future if she could time travel, what she thinks we’ll be nostalgic for in 40 years, and a few of her guilty pleasures. Be sure to stay tuned to find out what it means to Ashley to run a business with purpose. (So Many) Memorable Quotes 10:26 “I believe that I have a voice and that it’s important that I use it. I believe that about every person, no matter our sphere of influence. I believe that God has created us so uniquely to speak and that we live in this very wild world that is looking for hope and looking for grace and looking for more nuance than our news narratives and social media narratives allow us to have.” 10:59 “I didn’t know how to let people in I didn’t know how to say, ‘I have needs too,’ and I just thought I could always be the fixer or the advisor, the one people came to, the strong one…you realize that falls apart at some point. I’m not strong all the time.” 11:19 “I had to go on a real journey of taking off my mask and getting real and stop pretending and performing and learn how to be in real relationship with people. We can be loved even though we’re broken.” 14:58 - “I’m still unlearning some of the things [in the church] that are cultural and not biblical. Even though I’ve been hurt in the church, and I think if you’re human you have and the church is not perfect (it has imperfect people in it), overall I really do love that gathering and the corporate worship, and being together.” 15:27 - “For me in some ways the church has been a deep wound, but it’s also been a lifeline.” 22:27 – “I have come to a place where I value so much more, integrity over image.” 23:32 “I really began to identify, and I began to allow myself to be imperfect because that is all I saw in the scripture … imperfection.” “The bible is so diverse and rich. It makes room for people. It makes room for people of all colors, all shapes, all sizes, all backgrounds, and I just began to cultivate a life that did that too.” 35:59 – “When you meet a free person, you feel free to speak…when you see a brave person stand up against injustice, it makes you feel brave. It makes you feel like there’s a normal person doing the right thing, so I can be a normal person doing the right thing instead of pretending this thing doesn’t exist.” “Our courage gives others courage. Our vulnerability allows space for vulnerability for others. Our love for humanity cultivates diversity, equity, opportunities for people to be together and I think that’s really what we’re here for.” 39:23 – “Justice is just not a trend. It’s the very heart of God. Justice and righteousness are present together in scripture.” About Ashley Abercrombie: Ashley is a speaker and writer, whose work has been featured in various magazines and digital outlets, including Darling, OprahMag.com, Relevant, and Grit and Virtue. The pandemic has caused some unusual things. Social distancing? Conspiracy theorists? The uptick in “uncoupling”? We’ve found ourselves on different pages in two major parts of our lives. With the extra time, we each invested it in different ways. For Billy, it has been his career. For Ashley, it has been parenthood. Investing time in these areas has also left the other behind - hence, we are on different pages. Listen in as we replay the first conversation we had about this and how we are already working through this. What we talked about in this episode: What the extra time during the pandemic has looked like for us How Ashley brought up this conversation This method is NOT recommended! The areas of our life we are on the same page Why being on different pages doesn’t have to be an area of conflict How we plan to work through this and tips for you in your relationship
Part of the magic of college is that you get to learn a bunch of new stuff, not just from your professors, but also all the weird stuff that you get introduced to from a jumble of friends, friends of friends, and friends of friends of friends that you meet. A visit to someone’s trashed out apartment can introduce you to something that could change the course of your life. For Ashley that something was David Cross and Bob Odenkirk’s MR. SHOW, which aired on HBO from 1995-1998. This influential comedy sketch show is a must watch for anyone who enjoys comedy. What's up??? We are back with episode two! On this episode, we discuss how now that we are adults and also mothers... are frienships have shifted into a complete ghetto, chaotic, and misunderstood mess. For Ashley, it starts with her learning to communicate more efficently and be more empathetic to sustain those meaningful friendships. Whereas for Tiffany she discusses how adding more "mom friends" in her life, helped and established more stable friendships for her overall. Tiff and Ash also dive deep into a blog article shared on recently various social media platforms and listed below; where a young writer discusses her "ugly truth" about friendships, and what she is doing to combat it. http://www.blackgirlswhitecoats.com/2020/02/13/the-ugly-truth-about-adult-friendships/ We also discuss a possible new segment that we need help naming... its currently called: "let me tell ya something"... but we would love for some more spicier names suggestions!!! What criteria defines a classic film? An advancement in film technology? A technically flawless script? A unique blend of genre? For Ashley the criteria has to include some expression of humanity. The depth of humanity on display in Guillermo del Toro’s dark fantasy, PAN’S LABYRINTH (2006) made it an instant classic in Ashley’s mind. Dave started watching years ago, but he never saw the whole film. A hard watch in parts, the rewards of this masterful blend of fantasy and cruel reality are well worth braving some momentary discomfort. Subscribe in iTunes, Android, or Spotify. Her heart burns to not only have emotional health for herself, but also to help others become the healthiest version of themselves as well . She knew that she never wanted to feel like that in adulthood, so as a teenager, she started reading investment books and figuring out the best way to bolster her income for the long-term. For Ashley, there was no other choice but to save money on things like shopping and eating out, so she could focus on building her investments and provide a foundation for her future. That line of thinking is what lead her to teaching others about money and the power of investing. In this episode, we discuss making money as a freelancer, how you can increase your income, and how to manage a team. Everything we talk about is centered around increasing your income, so when you're making the big bucks you don't just have that money sitting in a bank account. “I think that some of the money issues that our peers have are because they feel like they need to keep up with the Jones's or keep up on Instagram.” In this episode Ashley talks about: Her personal background and inspiration for her wealth management. The best way that you can start building wealth today and how to make it last into the future. The biggest mistakes she sees millennials making with their money. Main Takeaways Fear and lack of knowledge is the main thing keeping people from getting into the investment game. You need to take a leap of faith. Reduce your debt and understand that wealth building takes a life time. Pick your niche and stick with it. It's the best way to build wealth. Friends and peer pressure pushing you to spend too much money is a huge problem with millennials and their relationship with money. Purchasing real estate and getting a roommate for said real estate is one of the best ways to grow your wealth early on. Turn-down. Brush off. Nix. No matter how you say it, rejection is never a fun thing to experience. Sometimes you can control it and other times you cannot. In this episode, we share some of our first experiences with rejection, some recent ones and our ways to try and overcome it. Music “Sunny” by Bensound.com. What We Talked About in this Episode: Our early experiences with rejection For Billy, being rejected from his top choice college For Ashley, it was being rejected (and rejecting) new classmates after moving More recent rejections Our first proposal under our business Bashley Collaborative Difficulty reaching out to a sibling due to fear of rejection Job and board applications Tips for overcoming rejection Let yourself feel those initial emotions (anger, sadness, etc,), but recognize that you have to pull yourself out of it Remember that some situations you can control and others you cannot Don't let the fear of rejection paralyze you from taking action
Ego is a dirty little word and we are dedicating an entire episode to it. We recently noticed others disguising their self-serving actions as the acts of a servant leader. We then challenged ourselves to look inward and determine how our egos affect us. In this episode, we discuss the dirty side of our egos, what our ugly egos look like, the ways it affects our relationship, and how it impacts others and our leadership. Plus for some reason, Billy snorts in the middle of this episode. Music “Sunny” by Bensound.com. What We Talked About in this Episode: Examples of ego and self-serving leadership The ways ego interferes with our relationship For Billy, its putting himself into every situation and giving advice or a coaching session when Ashley shares a struggle or issue For Ashley, it's an inability to apologize when in the wrong out of fear of looking like the lesser person Why Billy snorts in the middle of a podcast episode How ego disables us as leaders Our shared “my way or the highway” mentality that possible stems from an egotistical view of being the smartest person in the room Reminding ourselves why we are doing what we do For Ashley, is it for praise? For Billy, is it for power? What reality star reminds Ashley of Billy Hint: They have a massive ego
We talk a lot about goals, action, and achievement on this podcast. But we are human. There are things that hold us back from being our best selves. Rather than pointing the finger at external obstacles, we are looking inwards and sharing the ways we hold ourselves back. There is lots of vulnerability in this episode. Music “Sunny” by Bensound.com. What We Talked About in this Episode: Looking at external factors that gold you back is easy, but it’s hard to look internally The biggest obstacle to every goal is yourself The ways we hold ourselves back For Billy, it is thinking too far in the past He overanalyzes his past actions and their impact on the present For Ashley, it is being too concerned with what others perceive There is an interesting balance of managing credibility and maintaining humility For or us together, it is being too comfortable with one another We fall into our roles and do not challenge ourselves

[2:32] Ashley gives an overview of her background and what led her to launch her own firm. [4:55] For Ashley, launching her firm wouldn’t have been possible without the support of her family. [6:35] Josh reflects on starting his own firm and shares how it feels once you get to the other side of the initial challenges. [7:38] An analogy Ashley shares is that starting your own business is like a runaway train; you find a way to get the train out of the station but then you don’t know how to get off the train. [9:24] Ashley offers a way to look at retirement planning in the sense that it is working on the business rather than in the business. [11:10] With technology, it has become much simpler to get an accurate value for your business without having to pay an exorbitant amount of money and time. [13:51] If you plan to sell your business to a third-party, keep in mind that while you should get a valuation for your business, your business is actually worth what someone will pay for it, which is oftentimes much more its true value. [14:44] True North offers a 5-step exit path plan, the first of which is valuing your business. [16:22] Ashley started off her career in the 401K consulting world, but she realized that many businesses she was working with didn’t have a retirement plan in place and even experienced some unexpected situations that totally ruined her clients’ financial stability. [18:09] True North sets itself apart by way of their exit planning focus and also by being registered investment advisors. [20:07] Ashley hosts a daily podcast called the One Minute Retirement Tip which is on Alexa, YouTube, iTunes, and more. In this conversation, Ashley Proctor and I we talk about the difference between the coworking industry and the coworking movement. There are a number of things that stood out for me in this episode. Build something for community larger than you. Build something for people. Ashley points out that she is driven to build things for people. Essentially, that is the difference between coworking the industry and coworking the movement. The industry focuses on the Real Estate play while the movement focus on the people. For the movement, it is not about the space, it about the people. What drives Ashley is building something bigger than herself and building something for people. Building something for a larger community. Work towards dismantling loneliness, accelerating serendipity, and making meaningful human connections. For Ashley, Coworking firstly a verb. It is a shared office space for people who work independently or remotely. It is about having the freedom to choose where and when you working. Ashley gets a lot of meaning from her work because its not about subdividing space, it is about people. Focus on the mission or purpose of what you are doing, and it will help you build great things. She things of building spaces like planting a flag where people can meet connect and build the future. Surround yourself with people who care about you have your success in mind. At the heart of building coworking spaces is building a community where you surround yourself with people want you do well, people want you to be the best, they want you to be strong. Instead of saying no, show people what you are building. I asked Ashley about how they say no, when curating communities. Ashley pointed out that sometimes you do not need to say no. Let people self-select. Show them the space, explain what you are trying to build and if it works for them, they will opt-in. You build big things one tiny step at a time. When you are trying to build something that people think is impossible you do it one step at time. Focus on putting one tiny piece after another and rally more people together. Bring people together to build the future with you. When bad things happen to you separate what happened from your identity. An event or misfortune does not thing does not define you. I found this to be a very profound reminder and I have seen many people struggle to not let bad things define them. It is a very privileged things to say but it is important that we not let misfortune consume us and define who we are. We’ve spent the last three episodes talking about our goal setting process and now it’s time to get to the most important part -- ACTION. We’ve given each other permission to hold us accountable to our goals. But to make sure this doesn’t turn into nagging, we have built some structure around how we will hold ourselves & each other accountable to our 2019 goals. We share more about our Action + Accountability plan, our regular check-ins, and structured work sessions. You can grab your own copy of our Action + Accountability Plan at bashleymoyer.com/action. 2018 quite literally started off with a bang. And not in a good way. In this episode, we discuss our best moments in 2018 and those not so great moments. Rather than just giving the Instagram highlight reel, we dig a bit deeper and share the lessons we learned throughout the year. As Gandhi once said “The best way to lose yourself is in service to others.” Service & community involvement was a way we initially connected in our relationship and continues to be a value we share together. In this episode, we share where our passion for service comes from, what issues we care most about, and how we continue to lean in to leadership roles in our community. Music “Sunny” by Bensound.com. What We Talked about in this Episode: Where our passion for service comes from For Ashley, volunteer and philanthropy weren't words that were used regularly by her parents but everything was about gratitude Thank you cards for the holidays were written on Christmas Day Her parents helped her understand that there are people who are less fortunate Excess wasn’t a thing, toys & games that were still very loved would be donated In high school, volunteering was a way to get out of the house but she slowly learned in importance For Billy, service was important at an early age came from his mother’s work as a social worker He would work at senior centers with her or deliver Meals on Wheels with parents His Catholic education plays a role in this because the faith is rooted in social justice What issues we are most passionate about We don’t volunteer to just volunteer, we want to make an impact Education & learning is at the center of many of our commitments We love seeing others grow and develop into leaders How service continues to be a way we come together How service initially brought us together How we know when the other person’s skill set is more needed for each of our commitments Our desire to serve on a board together How you should always gain something some service You should be gaining a new relationship, a new perspective, or a positive feeling How we have learned to lean in to leadership roles The key for both of us has been to identifying gaps and filling them Simply showing up shows commitment Being out in the community and understanding other people’s problems

In this episode of I Do, We Do, we discuss lifelong learning. Learning didn’t stop for us when we walked across the stage for our high school diplomas, bachelor’s degree, or master’s degree. Learning is a key value of ours as a couple. To grow together, we constantly challenge ourselves, to grow more, and to learn more. It takes an investment in time and financial resources. In this episode, we discuss our favorite ways to learn including conferences, seminars, books, podcast, blogs, coaches, mentors, and self-reflection. Music “Sunny” by Bensound.com. What We Talked About in this Episode: We discuss our shared value for lifelong learning Learning doesn't end with formal education (like school) Lifelong learning can look like: formal education courses, conferences, seminars books, podcasts, blogs coaches, mentors, self-reflection Billy’s best learning has come from the things he has chosen to learn, not from things he was told he needed to learn We discuss how you can learn from books Every year, Billy sets a goal to read a book a week (only achieves some years) Billy believes in reading things that make you more of an expert, for him that is leadership development books Billy repeats some books because “repetition is the motor of learning” Some of those books are As a Man Thinketh, James Allen Five Dysfunctions of a Team, Patrick Lencioni Mindset, Carol Dweck We discuss how you can learn from other people “You’ll be successful because of the books your read and the people you meet.” Billy’s greatest mentor and coach has been his Dad You can learn about people through observations Billy has learned a lot through Ashley as well, in particular, empathy We’re better together because we teach other how to be better through the things we are individually passionate about We discuss our experiences learning through conferences & trainings In our most recent trip to Boston, we were in a training for facilitators of the New Politics Answering the Call We learned new thoughts on facilitating We are excited to learn more through the participants Billy recently attending the National Speakers Association Conference Billy learned best practices from other speakers Billy was inspired by the other 2,000 attendees Ashley is attending a conference this week Ashley walks away with entire notebooks of notes Ashley learns from the presenters, and alongside the other attendees and Ashley is excited to present this year! We discuss how learning is a commitment Every organization should invest in their people, because that is how the organization grows If your organization isn’t investing you, that doesn't mean you cannot invest in yourself you should always be investing in yourself It is the only invest in your life that you are guaranteed a return Ashley earned her MBA as an employee of the school, but continued to make the financial investment when she changed jobs even without her employer’s support We discuss how Ashley chooses to learn through podcasts Ashley plays podcast at her office nearly all day Ashley has learned alot from Jenna Kutcher’s Goal Digger podcast It’s a great way to get more intimate with the content Can learn in a more passive way to learn than reading You can learn from people who may never be able to meet and it is affordable!! We discuss how you can learn through reflection Reflection is taking the time to think back on past experiences and past activities If you didn’t learn in the moment, you can Ashley uses her bullet journal for reflection Journal prompts can be immensely helpful for guiding this Billy encourages clients to ask: What is right in my life? What is wrong in my life? What is missing in my life Reflection needs to be done in a quiet time We discuss our favorite ways to learn For Ashley it is conferences, podcasts, and reflection For Billy it is conferences, coaching, and books
It hasn't been easy for Ashley Fryer to let go of her faith. For thirty years, she dedicated her life to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. She grew up attending church multiple times a week, and dutifully studied her scriptures. Over the years, she found inconsistencies in church doctrine, and would pile these up on what she calls ‘the shelf'. She'd pile it higher and higher, thinking, “well, I'll deal with it later.”For Ashley, her shelf broke on November 5, 2015. On that day, a new LDS church policy leaked. This policy said, among other things, that children of gay parents could not be baptized unless they were eighteen years old, living on their own, and had renounced same sex marriage. It was a controversial policy that members of the church came out for and against. This ran counter to Ashley's personal beliefs, and she didn't believe the leadership of the church spoke for God. So she put down her beloved scriptures, unsure what to do with relics of a religion she no longer believed in.Since then, Ashley has been on a journey of spiritual discovery. She started exploring Wiccan practices, paganism, and her Norse heritage. She found that Hel, the Norse goddess of the underworld, resonated with her. Half beautiful maiden, half rotting corpse, Hel is the keeper of dead things. To Ashley, Hel represents a spirit of radical self acceptance, and new beginnings rising from the ashes. Ashley realized that she knew what to do with her LDS scriptures. This episode was produced and edited by Ashley's little sister, Bethany Denton. She’d pile it higher and higher, thinking, “well, I’ll deal with it later.”For Ashley, her shelf broke on November 5, 2015. On that day, a new LDS church policy leaked. This policy said, among other things, that children of gay parents could not be baptized unless they were eighteen years old, living on their own, and had renounced same sex marriage. It was a controversial policy that members of the church came out for and against. This ran counter to Ashley’s personal beliefs, and she didn’t believe the leadership of the church spoke for God. This episode was produced and edited by Ashley’s little sister, Bethany Denton. Join in as Michael speaks with Dr. Ashley Joves about her in-the-works dental practice, SMILE & CO. From worrisome health complications to inspiring community efforts, Ashley's revolutionary journey is sure to inspire the entrepreneur and warrior in all of us.Time-Stamped Show Notes [2:50] Michael emphasizes the challenges that come with starting something from scratch and recaps events from episode 1. [03:51] Ashley tells us about her meeting with Taryn Grows from the Folsom Chamber of Commerce in a local coffee shop. Taryn has helped her connect with the Folsom community and network with other small business-owners. [6:40] When asked how she views Chambers of Commerce, Ashley responds with, As a startup, I think it's a little too early to close doors on potential clients. [9:16] The trenching and framing of SMILE & CO. has been completed! Now Ashley and her team are deciding where to place electrical outlets and other amenities. Her walls will be built from frosted glass for an open feel without sacrificing privacy. [11:25] In order to preserve a beautiful open buttress and high ceilings, Ashley will most likely use scrim to reinforce her building and hold insulation in place. Her contractor recommends the sturdy material for a wide range of projects. [12:45] Ashley receives an impromptu call from her contractor, Dave. Listen in on their conversation! [14:03] Michael reminds us about the members of Ashley's team. [17:03] More about Ashley's awesome team_ [24:45] Ashley and her team were blown away by the look of the exposed ceiling. Unfortunately, hiding wires and piping when the walls are built with glass is both challenging and massively expensive. [26:54] Unbeknownst to her, Ashley's team removed one of the glass walls and replaced it with a regular wall. Although they have yet to complete the incorrect well, Ashley is upset about the change. [30:00] Ashley hopes to install cabinets from IKEA instead of a custom company. That way, she can both save money and enjoy a modern design. [30:42] A truss system is an arrangement of wooden or steel support beams configured in a triangle-shape. The design is strong, simple, inexpensive, and easy to construct. [32:00] If Ashley had known how awesome and cool-looking truss systems are, in addition to the industrial theme she later decided to focus on, she wouldn't have installed recessive/can lights. [34:02] I have been struggling health-wise, Ashley admits. Her journey has been exhausting and has taken a major tole on her mental and physical health. Her health nut brother has convinced her to take a few steps away from her project and focus more carefully on her health. [36:32] According to com, personal health is the fifth-most important factor in building a successful practice. Your business can't run without you, Michael insists. [37:19] When pursuing a goal or starting a business, make sure to set aside time for friends and family. Maintaining healthy relationships outside of work will help you nurture a healthy perspective and keep you energized. [37:35] I cared too much everyone else's opinions, Ashley says. In the end, she decided instead to form decisions based on her happiness and the success of her practice. [38:35] #AdviceAlert: Prioritize, Ashley says. If you have a lot of stuff you have to do, you really have to organize and write them down, and check things off as you go along. [39:40] Ashley used to follow a morning ritual before diving into work, but now she skips that routine and checks her phone and media feeds constantly. [40:30] #Help-A-Dentist: If you have any application recommendations or general tips to increase positivity, let Ashley know!3 Main Ideas Never be afraid to reach out to your community. One of the main focuses of SMILE & CO. is community outreach and supporting local business. Check out your local chamber of commerce and discover new opportunities in your area. Ashley created her own Wordpress site and figured out more just by using the internet. [30:20] Now that we're all caught up, Ashley describes the trenching process that was happening at the time of the podcast interview. [31:55] If you are thinking about doing a startup, this is a must, Ashley promises as she discusses breakaway seminars and saving money during the process. [33:55] You have to find a balance between what you want, what you need, and efficiency. [36:15] Ashley discusses using IKEA products in dental practices. There are definitely pros and cons. [38:04] Stressor Of The Week: Ashley's beloved WINEBAR concept is built around the experience of being comfortable and casual. Unfortunately, there is a federal patent and trademark on SMILEBAR dental and Ashley lost the name. [40:55] Ashley strongly recommends using a Trademark Electronic Search System (TESS) to see if a given concept or name has any patents or trademarks. [41:50] Use your resources, Ashley pleads. If you have any attorney friends, ask them for help or advice. [42:15] SMILE & CO. is Ashley's new practice name. She still hopes to work with small businesses and entrepreneurs in the area. Furthermore, she still wants to use the concept of creating an atmosphere that strays from the dreadful dentistry feel.
